CARL SCHAEFER (d. 1918) KILLED IN FALL FROM WINDOW Carl Schaefer fell from a window at the county asylum while trying to get out of his room Monday night and was killed. Mr. Schaefer, who was 82 years of age had been in failing health for a long time and his mind had become afflicted. His aged wife is ill and it was found impossible to care for him at home and he was sent to the hospital and later removed to the asylum where he was given a room on the second floor. The windows were protected by a screen, both inside and out, it having been said that Mr. Schaefer had a penchant for opening windows. Shortly after 2 o'clock Tuesday morning attendants discovered Mr. Schaefer was not in his room and upon investigating found that he had forced the screen and attempted to escape by using a bed sheet as a rope. But he fell to the ground and as stated above, was killed. He was born in Germany and came to this country when a boy. He was an old resident of this city and was engaged in the tailoring business for many years. He was a Civil War Veteran. He is survived by his wife and one daughter, Miss Emma Schaefer.
