ERWIN STRODTHOFF Car-Train Collision Kills County Man Passenger Is Victim, Driver Hurt Slightly E. W. Strodthoff Dies of Head, Chest Injuries A car-train collision two miles south of the city and just east of Clover Wednesday afternoon killed a passenger in the automobile but the driver escaped apparently without serious injury. The victim, Erwin W. Strodthoff, 69, of Rt. 4, Manitowoc died at Memorial Hospital less than two hours later of injuries received in the accident. Dr. Theodore A. Teitgen county coroner, said he suffered severe head and chest injuries and multiple fractures. (snip) Unprotected Crossing The accident occurred shortly after 3:15 p.m. on a black-topped Town of Newton road at an unprotected crossing one-fifth of a mile east of US Highway 141. Investigating county police offices reported that the Kalies vehicle was proceeding west on the town road when it slid on the slippery snow packed surface into the first coach behind the engine of a southbound Chicago and North Western passenger train. The car was ripped apart and pieces of it were strewn 150 feet along the tracks. The main section of the wreckage was dragged to a point 87 feet south of the crossing. (snip) Kalies told officers that he saw the train approaching and that he tried unsuccessfully to stop the vehicle on the slippery road. He and Strodthoff were salesmen for bulk milk plant equipment and reportedly had been visiting farms in the area. Police said the Kalies car left tire marks of more than 100 feet leading to tracks. The impact tore the engine completely out of the car. Part of the radiator flew into the air and wrapped itself around a guide wire or cable at a point 10 to 12 feet from the ground. At eye witness to the accident was Vernon Glaeser of Rt. 3, Manitowoc, who said he was stopped on the opposite or west side of the crossing when the accident occurred. Miss Mary Witczak of 1222 S. 19th St., Manitowoc, a recently graduated nurse, was a passenger on the train and gave first aid treatment to the injured at the scene… Strodthoff was born April 15, 1896, at Manitowoc, son of the late Herman and Minnie Vogelsang Strodthoff. He married May Chapman at Manitowoc and the couple located at Man-…(Turn to Page2-M, Col. 4) Car-Train Hit (Cont. from Page 1)...itowoc Rapids. He worked for a division of the Great Atlantic and Pacific Tea Co., White House Milk Co., until four years ago when he retired and had been a salesman for Zeo bulk milk plant equipment since. ANTON D. STROUF Well Known Attorney Shoots Self To Death The body of Atty. Anton D. Strouf, 55, chairman of the Manitowoc County Democratic Committee, attorney here since 1921, and former member of the Wisconsin and Montana legislatures, was found in a room at the Glenn Inn at 11 o’clock this morning, a bullet hole in his right temple. Dr. Gerald Rau, Two Rivers, county coroner, pronounced the case a suicide and estimated that Mr. Strouf had been dead six or eight hours. No inquest will be necessary, he said. No One Heard Shot Atty. Strouf had registered at the Glenn Inn early last evening, according to Ole Johnson, hotel employe. He requested a room and told Johnson that his family was out of the city. This morning hotel employes noticed that the door to the room occupied by Strouf was locked and the light was burning. There was no sound from within. They placed a chair in front of the door, looked through the transom and found the body on the bed. No one had heard a shot. Charles Reitmeyer, proprietor of the Glenn Inn, notified the sheriff’s office and Deputy Elder Wetenkamp, in turn, called police headquarters. Detective Sergeant Walter Herman forced open the door of Strouf’s room. Mr. Strouf’s clothes were hung on a chair and his brief case was on the dresser. A .32 calibre revolver was in his hand and the leather revolver holster was on the bureau. Mr. Strouf was born in the town of Kossuth Nov. 19, 1884. Taught Rural Schools He was educated in the public schools of the town and was graduated from the County Rural Normal school. He attended the Chicago Law college from 1907 to 1910 and in 1912 was admitted to the bar. For a number of years he practiced law at Great Falls, Montana, and during his residence there served a term in the state senate. In 1921 Mr. Strouf returned to Manitowoc county and formed a law partnership with Adolph Johnson under the firm name of Strouf and Johnson. When Mr. Johnson left to take a position with the securities division of the State Public Service Commission Mr. Strouf continued his law office alone. In 1931 he formed a partnership with Richard Torrison and some years ago took his son, Atty. Lloyd E. Strouf, into the firm. The junior Strouf has been connected with the Internal Revenue Department for several years with offices at Madison. Mr. Strouf married Miss Caroline Wenner of Mishicot on Oct. 12, 1912. MARIE STUPECKY (d. 1865) Mysterious Death. We are again compelled to record one of those mysterious deaths for which our county seems to be unfortunately noted. Mrs. Marie Dubetzky, a resident of Reedsville, left her bed and house in that village on Tuesday morning, about 2 o'clock, and although search was immediately made for her, she was not found until 5 o'clock in the afternoon, when her lifeless body was discovered in the creek within a few rods of her dwelling. Her age was about 24, and she left a husband and two children. She was a daughter of Mr. John Stupecky, and her friends cannot understand the cause of her sudden and mysterious death, except on the ground that she was subject to fits, and while in one of them met with her untimely end. As she left the house with no other apparel but her night clothes, it is very probable that this supposition is a correct one. Her funeral took place in this village yesterday (Thursday) afternoon. Manitowoc Pilot Friday, July 14, 1865 pg. 1 ******** (Note: She also has an entry under Marie Dubetsky which was given to the cemetery by a relative. Since finding this obituary with name and date, the entry in the books was matched up with it. There IS an entry in the books for Marie Stupecky. We are leaving both entries in case researchers are looking for her as Marie Dubetzky)

CAROL M. STURM INJURED GIRL DOESN’T KNOW FRIEND KILLED Doris Moakler, In Hospital, Tells How She Tried To Save Carol Sturm A dramatic story of an heroic but unsuccessful attempt to save the life of Carol Sturm, 15, of 21st and Western avenue, was told to Dr. Theodore Teitgen, county coroner, today by Doris Moakler, 14, of 2915 Western avenue. From a hospital bed this morning Doris told Dr. Teitgen of helping Carol free her foot when she became stuck between railroad ties on the Soo Line bridge west of 21st street and then getting her to lie down alongside the tracks to escape an oncoming freight train. The freight struck Carol as she lay beside the track, killing her. It hit Doris and threw her to the ice covered river 12 feet below where she broke through the ice into the cold water. As Doris told the story she still had not been told that Carol had been killed. She is suffering cuts above her left eyebrow and on the back of her head, severe shock and back injuries. Her condition today was called “good.” Her doctor was taking x-rays but said the back injuries were not believed serious. Doris said this morning that she and Carol began to run when they saw the freight train coming behind them as they crossed the bridge. Carol’s foot became stuck. “I helped her free herself.” Dr. Teitger quoted Doris. “It was too late to get off the bridge so I told Carol to lie down alongside the tracks. I lay down ahead of her. The train hit me and knocked me into the river.” “How is Carol?...” Two Others Unhurt June Paulsen, 15, of 714 South 28th street, and Beatrice Toston, 14, of 719-A South 20th street, who were with the Sturm and Moakler girls on the bridge, today told District Attorney John C. Danielson and Dr. Teitgen how they escaped. The girls met at the Paulsen home yesterday and left there shortly after 2 o’clock. They were going to the Green Bay hill near the high bridge west of the city to watch some boys who were skiing. When they arrived at the Soo Line bridge they argued for a few moments about whether to cross the river on the ice or the railroad trestle. They decided on the bridge when one of the girls said the ice would not be strong enough. The Paulsen and Toston girls were about 30 feet ahead of the others when they neared the far end of the bridge. One of them called out that she saw smoke of a train but another said it was steam from the condensary. A moment later the train appeared behind them. The Paulsen and Toston girls hurried off the bridge. They did not see the accident. As they turned they saw the train pass and saw Carol’s body on the bridge, they said. Doris was below, having fallen to the river and broken through the ice. 2 Men Saved Doris Police said today that Arthur and Sherman McKay, 138 River Drive, pulled Doris from the river and took her to the home of Thomas Korbal, foot of 21st street. From there she was taken out by police and sheriff’s officers and dragged in the police Red Cross boat to the city ambulance. She was taken to the hospital. Carol Sturm’s body was put aboard the freighter, which backed into the Soo Line depot. Police, the fire department, coastguardsmen and the sheriff’s office all joined in covering the accident. They had to drag the Red Cross boat to the Korbal home as no roads were open. No roads approach the bridge and men had to wade through snow to reach Carol Sturm’s body. Officers were sent to the wrong bridge by an excited woman who reported the accident. They went to the Soo Line bridge at the ship yards but a moment later received correct directions and went to the bridge west of 21st street. Funeral Monday Funeral services for Miss Sturm will be held on Monday at 8:30 a.m. from the Pfeffer Funeral Home and at 9 o’clock at St. Paul’s Catholic church, the Rev. Martin Jaekels officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Father Jaekels will lead recitation of the rosary on Sunday evening at 7 o’clock. The body will lie state at the Pfeffer Funeral Home after Sunday morning. Carol was born on September 6, 1926, in Manitowoc, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Leo Sturm. She was graduated from St. Paul’s parochial school and took her first year of high school work at Washington junior high school. She was a sophomore at Lincoln high school this year.
