THOMAS STEHULA PIONEER OF RAPIDS DIES AT WHITELAW Thomas Stehula, resident of Manitowoc Rapids for the past forty five years, passed away at the Maple Crest Sanitarium at Whitelaw last evening at 6:30, having been in failing health for some time. Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock from the Chapel of the Urbanek and Wattawa Undertaking parlors and burial will take place at Evergreen. Some Manitowoc county speaker will take charge of the funeral services. Mr. Stehula was born in Bohemia and came to Manitowoc Rapids when twenty years old. He was about sixty-eight years old when death occurred. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Rose Stehula, sons Edward, 736 South Ninth street of this city; Charles and Adolph of Los Angeles, California; daughters Mrs. Emma Kornofski of Milwaukee; Mrs. Mary Markomatic of Los Angeles, Mrs. Henry Mormon also of Los Angeles and Mrs. Joseph Schneck of this city. One brother John also resides in Oklahoma. Mr. Stehula belonged to the Bohemian Lodge in this county and was well known. Manitowoc Herald News, Wednesday, January 23, 1924 P.2 ********** COST RAPIDS MAN EXTRA FIVE WHEN HE REFUSED TO APPEAR Thos. Stehula, Charged with Illegal Fishing Was Stubborn and Pays for it-Old Excuse Failed to go this Time Thomas Stehula, an aged resident of Rapids, is inclined to be somewhat stubborn and when he don't want to do a thing he just simply won't unless there is some power to force him to it. This attitude cost Stehula and additonal $5 in municipal court yesterday afternoon when the amount, or nearly that, was taxed onas (sic) costs to the fine which he paid on charge of violation of the fish laws. Stehula was charged with fishing with a net within 200 feet of the Rapids dam, having been caught in the act by game wardens at midnight Wednesday. Stehula was not arrested but was told to appear in municipal court yesterday morning at 10. He failed to show up and a warrant was issued and given to Sheriff Engelbrecht for service and Stehula was brought into court late in the afternoon. He admitted the violation charged and was assessed a fine of $25 and costs, totaling $30.35 and paid. A plea that his wife was ill and that he wanted the fish for her was made by Stehula but the court was told that three or four years ago when the man was deteced (sic) in a similar violation and had made a piteous plea, advancing some excuse, he had not been prosecuted but had been warned of the law, and the excuse failed to go down. It was also stated the Stehula had given the wardens a fictitious name Wednesday night and he admitted it excusing the action by saying he thought the officers were fooling him. Later he did not want to correct the misinformation, but the wardens learned his name from others. Wholesale prosecutions are probable as result of reported violations which the wardens are investigating, Warden Egan having the assistance of two Sheboygan wardens this month. Four cases have already been before the court. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Friday, April 14, 1916 P.1 ********* [bur 01-26-1924/cause: pulmonary tuberculosis]

LIBBIE STEINER The family of John Steiner here is mourning the death of a small child. Der Nord Westen, 16 July 1903 ******** [cause: premature birth]

RUTH F. STEINER Death Ascribed To Heart Attack No Inquest Planned, Officials Say An autopsy today definitely established that Miss Ruth Steiner, 38, of 505 Huron street, supervisor of stenographers for the Manitowoc Ship Building Company, whose body was found lying on the sidewalk on S. 10th street near Franklin Sunday evening at 9:34 o’clock was the victim of a heart attack. A police investigation disclosed that Miss Steiner spent the early part of Sunday evening in the company of Richard Kluck, 38, of 1600-22nd street, Two Rivers, a ship yards employee. She disappeared while Kluck was in the Cottage Inn on Highways 151-141 and apparently walked to Manitowoc, authorities said. Kluck said he was surprised when he came out of the tavern 10 minutes later and found that Miss Steiner was gone. Nothing she had said indicated that she planned to walk to the city, he stated, and she had told him that she would wait for him in the car. Police were notified at 9:34 p.m. Sunday night by George Kapitz that a woman, apparently injured, was lying on the sidewalk on the west side of Tenth street near Franklin. Kapitz said another man reached the body ahead of him and Kapitz drove directly to the police station and requested that the ambulance be sent over. Removed To Hospital The woman was lying face down when found, her body partly on the sidewalk and partly on the dirt between the sidewalk and the Manitowoc Lumber company warehouse. She was lying 31 feet from the Franklin street corner. Her closed purse was underneath her and one slipper was six feet away from the body. Her name was found in a spectacle case. Officers Andrew Pribek, Harry Kasten and Anton Glysch removed the woman to the hospital where Dr. N. Schneck pronounced her dead. Coroner Theodore Teitgen said that Miss Steiner had a dislocated jaw which might have been caused by the fall. There were no marks on the body, however, and it was impossible to determine the cause of death except by an autopsy. Dr. Edgar H?th of Valders, who performed the autopsy, said that Miss Steiner suffered from a serious heart ailment and that fatigue, due to a long walk, or possibly great nervous strain would have caused immediate death. He said there was no question but that death was due to a heart attack. After receiving the autopsy report, Dist. Atty. Danielson and Dr. Teitgen said that no inquest would be necessary. Mr. Danielson said that the report coincided with information obtained from Kluck, who stated that Miss Steiner had complained of pain when walking fast or walking uphill. Kluck’s story, Mr. Danielson said, was substantiated by information obtained by Captain Tomchek and Sheriff Bergner who checked the places he said he visited. Kluck Questioned Kluck was questioned this morning at police headquarters by Police Chief J. J. Kuplic, Dist. Atty. John C. Danielson and Detective Captain Frank Tomcheck. Kluck said that he called for Miss Steiner at her home about 7 o’clock Sunday night and they drove out on Highway 151 in the (Cont. on Page 15, Col. 5) DEATH ASCRIBED TO HEART ATTACK (Cont. From Page 1) direction of Valders. They drove some distance past Silver Lake, turned around and went back to the 151 Club where they parked in the lot outside the tavern. They sat in the car for perhaps 10 or 15 minutes, Kluck said, but did not go in. Then they decided to drive back toward Manitowoc. Kluck stopped the car at the Cottage Inn about half a mile outside the city limits and parked again. Kluck said he went into the tavern and Miss Steiner remained in the car. He told his questioners that he was in the Cottage Inn for about 10 minutes or a little more and had two drinks. When he came outside, he said, Miss Steiner was not in the car. Serached For Her Kluck said he looked around for Miss Steiner but could not find her and decided that she must have started walking toward Manitowoc. He got into his car and drove slowly toward the city hoping to find Miss Steiner. He dove northeast on Calumet drive, turned north on 26th street and then drove down Washington and up Eighth street, turning off at Huron street. He made inquiries about Miss Steiner at her home and then drove back on Eighth, and Washington streets and out on Calumet drive, believing that he might have missed seeing her. He returned to Miss Steiner’s home a second time and there met Police Officers Chester Saduske and Ralph Kahl who had just notified the father of the young woman. Kluck accompanied Mr. Steiner and the officers to the hospital and assisted in identifying the body. Kluck was detained at the police station overnight as a material witness pending the autopsy, and was released this afternoon. Funeral services for Miss Steiner will be held Wednesday at 2:15 p.m. from the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home, the Rev. C. H. Phipps of the First Presbyterian church officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Born In Waupun She was born in Waupun, August 23, 1904, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Steiner. Three years later the family moved to Manitowoc. She attended the elementary and high school in Manitowoc and was graduated from Lincoln high school 21 years ago. Manitowoc Herald Times, February 16, 1952 P. 2 ********** LURED BY WOMAN; HE IS ROBBED C. Stenson, Valders Man, is Victim of Thugs in Chicago MANITOWOC CO. MAN IS FOUND UNCONSCIOUS Police Pick Him Up in Alley, Bruised and Bleeding- Robbed of $50; Gold Watch and Chain - The Story Lured by a woman with whom he had become acquainted shortly after his arrival in the city, C. Stenson, a Valders farmer, was the victim of thugs in Chicago on Wednesday and was beaten and robbed. Stenson was found by the police, unconscious, bruised and bleeding in an alleyway in the downtown section and was cared for by the police station pending an inquiry into the case. Stenson, who was in charge to attend the livestock show held there this week, apparently fell easy prey judged from the story he told the police. Stenson reached Chicago via Goodrich boat and left the docks in company with a woman. While on the street at Indiana & Rush streets, on the north side, the two were accosted by two men and almost immediately Stenson was attacked, felled by a blunt instrument and when found had been robbed of $50 in money, a gold watch and other valuables. A Chicago paper tells of Stenson's experience in the following: " Cornelius Senson, thirty-two years old, a stock raiser from Manitowoc, Wis., was lured into an alley on the North side by a woman, beaten into unconsciousness by two men and robbed of $50 and his watch and chain early today. Patrolman P. J. Murphy of the East Chicago Ave. Station, who was notified by a citizen, found the victim of the robbers bleeding and unconscious in an alley near Indiana and Rush Street. "Stenson was revived by an ambulance surgeon and taken to the police station, where he told of this attack. He said that he had arrived in the city to attend the livestock show. At the docks of the Goodrich Transportation company, he met the woman and accompanied her. As Stenson was entering the alley, two men approached and spoke to the woman. An instant later one of them dealt him a blow with a heavy instrument. Stenson tried to defend himself but fell unconscious from the blows rained upon him. Inspector Backus was furnished with a good description of the woman and is seeking for her." Stenson is a well known farmer in vicinity of Valders and is known as a cattle buyer. No report of the case has been received by the local police as yet. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Fri., Dec. 4, 1908

JOSEPH STEPHENSON On Tuesday evening, August 25th, while Mr. Joseph Stephenson and his son George were drawing a load of planed lumber into their yards at the Center, the horse became frightened at an engine, which was standing on the track, and ran away. Mr. Stephenson grabbed the lines from his son thinking that he could stop the horse. He was thrown out and severely injured. In all probability the wheel passed over his abdomen. He received a scalp wound about two and one-half inches in length, over the back part of the head, but this had little or nothing to do in causing his death. The shock and attending collapse were so severe that for a while at least, it seemed as if he would die before the doctor could dress his head. About seven o’clock p.m. he began to rally and at eight o’clock reaction had set in and his general condition appeared more favorable. The exact nature of the internal injuries are unknown, as no post mortem examination was made but there is no doubt but what they caused his death. Mr. Stephenson was a man highly respected in this community and his untimely death sent a thrill through the whole neighborhood. All join in extending sympathy to the bereaved family. Joseph Stephenson was born in Belfast, Ireland, February 3, 1835, and came to America with his parents in 1841 locating in Massachusetts. In 1849 he migrated to Wisconsin and located in Manitowoc County where he remained for a number of years. In 1873 he was married to Miss Emily Dittmar of that city. In 1885 he removed to Gravesville, and during the past year has conducted a lumber yard in this city. Mrs. Stephenson and five children survive him. The funeral occurred on Friday and the remains were interred at Manitowoc. The guests from abroad were Gordon and John Stephenson, Mrs. Jos. Finch, of Liberty; Mr. and Mrs. George Goldie, of Newton, Manitowoc County and Mrs. George Rein, of Sheboygan. Chilton Times, August 28, 1896 ******** [cause: accident]

MARGARET STEPHENSON (d. 1928) Mrs. Margaret Stephenson, widow of John Stephenson, died at her home, 1208 Marshall street, Monday evening. Her health had been poor for some time. She was born in Milwaukee and was 81 years old. Her parents moved to this county and settled in the town of Liberty when she was six years of age. They were among the first settlers of that town and it was there the deceased grew to womanhood and spent most of her life. Six years ago she moved to this city. Her husband who was one of the substantial farmers of Liberty, died some twenty years ago. Her son John, an only son, died on the battlefield in France during the world war. A daughter, Ella, died a few years ago. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Thomas Morris and Miss Margaret Stephenson, and two grand children, Elizabeth and Rosemary Morris. She is also survived by two sisters, Mrs. Frank Hamerle of Sheboygan and Mrs. A. Zimmerman of San Diego, Calif. Mrs Stephenson was an affectionate mother, a good neighbor and a true friend. While she has gone from the scenes, the conflicts, and the sorrows and pleasures of life, she will still live in the hearts of those who knew her best. She had filled the various relations of life, as daughter, wife, mother, sister and friend, and filled them well. But she is gone. Another name is stricken from the roll of our old settlers. Yet in such a death there is really no cause for grief. Her life work was done and well done. The stern Reaper found her, "as a shock of corn fully ripe for the harvest." The funeral was held this morning from St. Boniface church with a Solemn Requiem Mass sung by Monsignor Peil assisted by Fathers Kersten and Letz. Interment was in Evergreen cemetery. Liz continued her education at the Neenah-Menasha School of Nursing, where she became an LPN in 1955. In lieu of flowers, memorials would be greatly appreciated to First German Ev. Lutheran Church, or to the Lakeshore Humane Society, a place, in Liz’s words, “Always on my mind and in my heart;” All her life, Liz had a great love and concern for all of God’s creatures. Liz’s family would like to thank the doctors and staff of the fifth floor at Holy Family Memorial Hospital; the staff at River’s Bend Rehab Center; and the HFM Hospice Care team, for their support and compassion during her last days. The story of my life is ended. I must leave it to those nearest to me to make the final notations. And as they read this story of a child of God, may they think of me in kindness and mercy, and may my memory be of benefit to them in this life and in the life to come. As for me, it is indeed a sad thought to part from those I love best. But the grief of leaving you, my beloved ones, is dispelled with the shadows of death before the rising sun of eternal life. Remember me, not as one who has been with you a few years, only to be taken away; but as one who has gone before you and will be with you in the resurrection of the body and the life everlasting. Amen. Herald Times Reporter, April, 2015

The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon, with burial at Evergreen here. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Thursday, June 14, 1917, Page 5 ******** DIED - Mrs. Margaret Stewart, wife of James Stewart, of Town Liberty, Manitowoc Co., June 13, 1917. The funeral services at the home on Saturday morning were conducted by the Rev. Axtell, pastor of First Presbyterian Church, Manitowoc. The reading of the Twenty-Third psalm and Tennyson's beautiful poem, "Crossing the Bar" were appropriate parts of the service. The large concourse of friends and the beautiful flowers attested the esteem in which she was held by all who had the privilege of knowing her. She leaves to mourn her loss her husband, six daughters and one son and also six grandchildren. The daughters are: Mrs. Allan Brown, Red Granit, Wis., Mrs. Geo Coldie, Timothy, Wis., Mrs. Edw Swanston, Bertram, Minn., Mrs. Edward Hetzel and Mrs. Albert Hetzel, Almond, Wis., Mrs. Arnold Swenson, Timothy, Wis., and a son, David of Timothy, Wis. The good and true of earth has passed away. The Master of Life has seen fit to take from us one whom many in their hearts delighted to honor until with the name of friend. Following the instincts of her generous heart, her hand was ever open to the needy and afflicted and no monument or sculptured art will equal the beauty of that raised in the affections of those who knew and loved her true womanly qualities and unselfish life. Bloom ye sweet spring flowers and render your sweetest fragrance where she lies. The waves that wash the shore of her girlhood home give out your note of never ceasing sorrow. We will miss her tho "just away" but there is comfort in the thought that when we "Gather at the River", so fine a soul will be waiting to greet us from the farther side. She was one of those fine souls that pass away like gleams of sunshine from an April hill. Knowing no creed but that of loving service to her family and friends and endowed with a disposition and broad humanity she seemed to encompass all within its affectionate radiance. Going to sleep with knowledge of earthly problems, she woke to realize those vast eternities so much beyond our ken; listing we might hear the exultant cry. O Golden Day, O Blessed Day, Upon the hills of light Mid silver streams and happy dreams. My soul shall know no night.
