RAYMOND RATH RAYMOND RATH, AGED 10, DISAPPEARS FROM HOME, NO TRACE OF HIM FOUND Lad was Last Seen at Two Yesterday Afternoon at Cigar Shop of Uncle on Washington St. Where he Frequently Worked at Stripping Tobacco, Stepfather and Police Conduct All Night Search in Vain Has anyone seen Raymond Rath, aged ten, since yesterday ? of trace of him ? been lost and his whereabouts are unknown while a mother is grief stricken and sick with apprehension. Raymond, dressed in a lavender colored waist dark pant with a soft grey hat and barefooted, left his home yesterday noon for the cigar shop of his uncle, Michael Rummelfinger?, over Weinschenk’s barber shop. He was accustomed to go there and stay for an hour or several days in the week assisting in the work of stripping. Yesterday he came as was his want and at 2 o’clock picked up his hat and said “Good by uncle, I’m going home.” That was the last seen of him and a ? search of the city, the water ? and among relatives on the South side have failed to located him. He has disappeared as completely as though the earth had opened and swallowed him. Even his playmates do not remember having seen him and no one has been found who saw him after he left the cigar shop on his way home. In the belief that the lad made his way to one of the carferries, Ludington police have been asked to visit and search the vessels upon arrival there, but up to this afternoon, this ? of inquiry has been without avail. The boy always expressed interest in the big boats and visited the docks at times to see them unload and take on freight. It was believed possible that he had gone aboard and remained until after the boat had left the docks and being unable to get ashore stayed hiding until the vessel reached the other shore. The boy was not a frequenter of the bathing beaches to any extent and rarely joined the other boys of his age to fish off the pier. These places, however, were visited by the lad’s stepfather, John Soley, last night and in fact Soley conducted an all night search. It was not until late however that the police station was notified. The Soley family lives at 815 North Sixth street and the boy is one of three children, being a son of Mrs. Soley by a previous marriage. WALTER RATHSACK Walter's body was never recovered and the only memorials to him are the small cenotaph on his parents' tombstone and an even smaller one on the Tablets of the Missing at the East Coast Memorial in Battery Park, New York City. His parents tried for years to learn the circumstances of his death but, so far as I know, went to their graves knowing no more than I did. We have learned that Walter C. Rathsack and his shipmates died as the result of an unsuccessful experiment in anti-submarine warfare promoted by President Roosevelt: the deployment of Q-Ships in the Atlantic. The story is told -- and Walter C. Rathsack named -- in Kenneth M. Beyer's book _Q-Ships Versus U-Boats: America's Secret Project_, Naval Institute Press, Annapolis, MD, 1999. Q-Ships were converted merchant ships, heavily armed but disguised to appear harmless. Their mission was to entice German U-boats into attacking them on the surface (thus conserving their torpedoes for bigger prey), then destroy them with depth charges and gunfire. The experiment was born in desperation, undertaken in haste and soon abandoned. Only three or four Q-Ships were commissioned by the U.S. Navy. The first were the USS Asterion (ex-SS Evelyn) and the USS Atik (ex-SS Carolyn), former bulk sugar carriers of about 3200 tons displacement. They were converted to Q-Ships in Portsmouth, Maine, and commissioned on 5 March 1942. All officers and crew were volunteers. Chief Radioman Walter C. Rathsack was assigned to USS Atik. After a short period of training (only 36 hours according to author Beyer!), Atik and Asterion put to sea on their maiden voyages. On 26 March 1942 Atik was torpedoed by U-123 about 300 miles off the coast of Virginia. The ship sent two distress signals, reporting itself on fire though not seriously, and fired on the submarine, inflicting some damage and one casualty. U-123 then submerged and waited until nightfall to administer the coup de grace with another torpedo. Atik disappeared without a trace, leaving no survivors among its crew of 139 officers and men. The whole affair was shrouded in secrecy until May 1944 when the Navy announced only the presumption of death of the Atik's crew. The identity and actions of U-123 were not revealed until postwar examination of German records. So there at last is a date of death for Walter C. Rathsack: 26 March 1942. I find it a cruel irony that Walter's father was a foreman at the Manitowoc shipyard that built submarines for the U.S. Navy. (information from researcher/see contributors page)

When the Ratke boy did not come home Monday evening, his companion was interviewed but could furnish no clue. He pointed to the river ominously but would not say that he saw the other boy fall in. Neshoto Mills:
A friend who has recently visited the Neshoto Mills, under the supervision of
Mr. A. Raymond, resident partner in the firm of Pendleton & Co., furnishes us
with some interesting facts and statistics relative to the business of this
extensive establishment.
Mr. R., has resided at Neshoto about 8 years and is very generally respected as
an unassuming but thoroughly practiced man, who manages the heavy transactions
of the concern without noise or display and to the satisfaction of all with whom
he does business. A store of goods is kept by the firm, comprising an excellent
stock, which are sold at fair and reasonable prices, and their sale of goods,
provisions, etc., amount to over twenty thousand dollars per year.
In the manufacture of lumber they employ three upright saws besides lath saws.
They use both steam and water power. At these mills they have manufactured and
shipped during the past year, 3,500,000 feet of lumber. The amount of capital
employed is about $125,000. They have entered within eighteen months, 10,000
acres of pine land on the river above, they are now building a powerful steam
tug for their own use, of sufficient power to tow vessels or rafts. They are
building a pier at Two Rivers which will cost about $10000. The logs they have
on hand this spring will exceed $45,000 in value and our informant was shown a
pile of lumber ready for shipment, containing 1,000,000 feet. Neshoto is only
5 1/2 miles from Manitowoc by the trail but by what is called the town line road,
it is 6 1/2. The same firm owns an extensive steam mill and pier at Kewaunee with
a very large amount of pine land in that vicinity. All the lumber manufactured at
their mills is carried to Racine so that their business transactions may be
regarded as strictly belonging to the state.

PHYLURA A. RAYMOND DIED—On Monday, June 26, 1882, at Neshota, Phylura A. Raymond, aged 20 years 11 months and twenty days. Just before going to press the above news is given us, and never during our experience as editor have we taken up our pen with such saddened thoughts as we do now to inform our readers of the grievous sorrow that has befallen a most estimable family. Miss Phylura, commonly called Lura, was so well and favorably known in this county, that no words of ours can add anything of value. While she moved in the social circles of our city, she was one of the brightest among the bright bevy of our young ladies, and her vivacious nature and universal kindness won her scores of friends. Three years ago, when consumption began its dire encroaches, her jolly nature was tinged with sadness and slowly her life ebbed away. Neither the sunshine of nature, nor the art of the physician, could stay the fateful slayer, and the beautiful flower faded and fell. She bore her suffering bravely, and the more acute it became, the more patient and gentle was she. If ever a soul deserves eternal happiness, it is that of Lura Raymond. With saddened hearts and tearful eyes her young friends stand at her grave, living evidences of heartfelt sympathy and sorrow. The funeral of Miss Raymond will occur tomorrow afternoon and the services will take place at three o’clock at the Episcopal church.
