MARY H. PERONTO (d. 1957) Mary Peronto Dies in Early Morning Crash Manitowoc County's traffic death toll rose to 19 Monday with the death of an 18 year old girl in an accident on the Lake Shore Road. Dead on arrival at Holy Family Hospital was Mary Helen Peronto, 18, of 1212 Fairmont St., Manitowoc. She suffered facial injuries and a skull fracture when thrown against windshield of a car in which she was riding with Richard F. Hartman, 24, of 1731 28th St., Two Rivers. Hartman was hospitalized with fractures of upper and lower jaw. The accident occurred about 12:15 a.m. at a point three quarters of a mile south of the Manitowoc city limits on the Lahe Shore Road. The car had extensive damage to the front end. Hartman was apparently returning to the city after visiting at Sunmet's Bar. Coroner Dr. Theodore Teitgen indicated that inquest would be held. The girl's death was the third traffic fatality to be reported in the county within 10 days and left the 1957 total only one short of the final total for 1956 with more than a month remaining. ... CHARLES J. PETERMAN Ice Covered Streets And Highways Cause Series of Accidents 14 Persons Injured, One Fatally In More Than Dozen Mishaps Fourteen persons were injured, one fatally in more than a dozen auto accidents in Manitowoc city and county over the weekend. Icy streets and highways, as well as mist and drizzling rain Saturday night and Sunday was the direct cause of the majority of the accidents, officials said. Charles Peterman, 58, of 709 Hancock street, died at the Holy Family hospital at 2:30 this morning following an accident at 8th and Hancock streets at 9:30 Saturday night, when he was bit by cars driven by Lawrence Geiger, 829 Wilson street, and Andrew Hutchison, 3103 Calumet Avenue. Petermans' death was the first highway fatality for 1939 in Manitowc county. (Continued on Page 12. Col. 5) Peterman was hit while walking midway in the intersection of 8th and Hancock streets Saturday evening. He was taken to the hospital by Sheriff Norman Berkedal in the county ambulance. His injuries at the time were not considered serious. Cause of Death Uncertain At a late hour this afternoon authorities were not yet certain whether injuries suffered in the accident or pneumonia caused his death. According to Geiger, who hit Peterman first, Peterman must have been right in the middle of the intersection, at about where the manhole is located. Geiger said he was driving north on 8th street. He didn't see Peterman, he said, until the rear of his car was 12 or 13 feet past the south crosswalk. Peterman was hit by the left front part of the car and fell across the fender and bumper. Geiger applied his brakes and stopped, after skidding. Peterman fell from the car and Hutchison, driving south on 8th street, hit his body. Peterman was lying nine feet north of the intersection. District Attorney Patrick Dewane and Dr. Gerald Rau, coroner, said there will probably be an inquest. Sergt. Georg Tulach and Officer George Darbant of the police department took measurements at the scene of the accident this morning and questioned witnesses. Funeral services for Charles Petterman will be held Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock from the Leschke funeral home. Burial will be in the Evergreen cemetery. Mr. Peterman was born in Germany on Dec. 2, 1881. He came to America as a young man and has lived in Manitowoc for the past 36 years. He was employed at the Aluminum Goods Co. Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Frank Gersek; three sons, Frank, Charles and Paul, all of this city; a sister, Mrs. John Wardzinski, Chicago; and 11 grandchildren. The body may be viewed at the funeral home tonight and until the time of the services Wednesday. GEORGE PETERS (d. 1924) DROPS DEAD IN HIS OFFICE GEO. PETERS STRICKEN AT WORK TODAY Death Came Without Warning and Is a Great Shock George Peters, foreman in the foot press department at the local factory of the Aluminum Goods Manufacturing Company, dropped dead at the plant this morning while engaged in his duties, the end coming without a moment's warning and while Mr. Peters was conversing with an assistant in his department. Death was due to heart trouble which followed a recent illness from which he had suffered. Mr. Peters had returned to his position at the plant last Monday after some time off because of illness. He arrived at his usual hour this morning, apparently in the best of health and spirits and had been engaged about the department only a short time when the end came. Mr. Peters was about to go from one part of the room to another with an assistant inspecting machines when he suddenly collapsed and before medical aid could be summoned, was dead. Death Great Shock The sudden death of Mr. Peters and the circumstances attending proved a great shock at the factory where he was popular and a pall rested over the plant today. Mr. Peters had been employed with the Goods ever since he was a boy coming here from Escanaba with his parents, and had been an industrious and efficient employee whose advancement testified to his worth to the company. Deceased was born January 27, 1887 and was married several years ago to Alma Meihsner, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Meihsner 12331 So. Fourteenth street. The Peters home is at 1309 So.
