JOHN LEONARD O'MALLEY TWO DEAD, 5 HURT, IN ACCIDENTS DEATH RIDES HIGHWAYS OF COUNTY TO EXACT TERRIBLE TOLL OVER THE WEEK END Two Rivers Man Among Victims of Two Crashes As Chicago Man Meets His Death - Others Seriously Injured and One May Not Survive Mrs. John O'Malley, 38, was still unconscious at the Holy Family hospital at 2 o'clock this afternoon, nearly 24 hours after she was injured in the accident in which her husband met his death. Her attending physician declared the full extent of her injuries had not been determined but that her skull was apparently fractured. Her respiration continued to be good and she was said to be holding her own in spite of her inability to rally sufficiently to regain consciousness. The district attorney has decided that there will be no inquest into the causes of the accident. (snip) O'Malley Failed To Stop (snip) The two cars met squarely at the intersection when the large Hudson brougham driven by Max Bermstein, Green Bay Route 2, collided with the Model T Ford with a converted speedster body occupied by Mr. and Mrs. O'Malley and the force of the impact threw both cars headlong into the ditch on the west side of the highway. Bermstein was driving north and O'Malley was coming west on County Trunk D and when the two machines finally came to a rest, the little speedster was flung 150 feet north of the intersection with its nose buried in the dirt, crumpled up, while the Hudson was 25 feet back on its side, badly wrecked. Thrown Clear of Car O'Malley was thrown free of the car and died almost instantly while his wife was pulled from the seat unconscious and conveyed to the hospital by Con Berthelson and a companion who came upon the scene just after the smashup. The body of O'Malley was taken to the mortuary by the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei company. Mrs. O'Malley is still in critical condition at the hospital and was unconscious for many hours after the accident. O'Malley was born at Menasha but has lived at Two Rivers for the past eight years, being employed in the rolling mill of the Aluminum Goods Manufacturing company at the time of his death. Besides his wife, 40, he is survived by six children, ranging in age from four to 19. (snip) The remains of Mr. O'Malley may be viewed here Wednesday and Thursday at the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei chapel and will be taken to Menasha, probably on Friday for burial. The deceased was born in Menasha, in 1882 and came to Two Rivers eight years ago, residing on South 12th street there. He was employed in the rolling mills at the time of his death and also played diamond ball with one of the teams there. He is survived by seven children Mrs. Garfield LaGrande of Manitowoc, Willard, 19, Viola, 14, Catherine, 12, Avolda, 10, Lloyd, 8, and Russel 4. Manitowoc Herald News, Tuesday, September 8, 1931 p.1 ********* The page 1 that keeps coming up is not really page 1 (Continued from Page 1) and was traveling at a good rate of speed. O’Malley was blowing the horn steadily, Berthelsen said, and failed to observe the arterial highway stop sign. Car Smashed A Hudson coach driven by (omitted), Green Bay roadhouse operator, approached from the south and apparently the driver took it for granted that O’Malley would stop. When he did not the (omitted) car struck the O’Malley machine, swinging it around and crumpling the front end. The Hudson swung to this west side of the road, turned around and then tipped over. The front end was stove in and the windshield and top smashed. O’Malley was crushed under the steering gear and died almost instantly. Mrs. O’Malley’s head evidently struck the windshield. Neither was thrown from the car. Mrs. O’Malley remained in a state of coma at Holy Family hospital this afternoon and X-ray pictures were taken to determine whether her skull was fractured. (snip) Born in Menasha O’Malley was employed at the Aluminum Goods rolling mills at Two Rivers and conducted the popcorn and peanut stand at the Two Rivers Baseball park. John O’Malley was born in Menasha 49 years ago. He married Anna Waton 32 years ago. They resided in Menasha for 20 years, Hill City, Minn., five years and Two Rivers seven years. The survivors are the widow and seven children, Willard, Christine, Viola, Catherine, Alvira, Lloyd and Russel. He also leaves his mother and one brother. No inquest will be held in the death… Manitowoc Evening Times, September 8, 1931 pp. 1, 10 ********* MRS. O’MALLEY IS IMPROVING John O’Malley Will Be Buried on Friday While improvement was noted in the condition of Mrs. O’Malley who is confined to Holy Family hospital, funeral plans were made today for John O’Malley, Two Rivers, who was killed in an auto crash at the intersection of County Trunk D and Highway 141 Monday afternoon. O’Malley was killed outright when his car collided with a machine driven by Max Bernstein of Green Bay and also occupied by John Pappas, Sheboygan. Mrs. O’Malley remained unconscious at the hospital Monday night and most of Tuesday. Today the attending physician said she was conscious except for intervals of drowsiness. An x-ray picture showed that her skull was not fractured and she is suffering mostly from a severe concussion and shock. The funeral of Mr. O’Malley will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the funeral home, Ninth and State Streets, with the Rev. C. H. Phipps officiating. Burial will take place in Evergreen cemetery. The body may be viewed tonight and Thursday night. MADS ORNES Sudden death during the night from Saturday to Sunday took the life of Mads Ornes, a well-known resident of our city. Ornes, who had suffered with rheumatism for a long time but did not let it lower his spirits, went to bed Saturday evening but was unable to sleep and was still awake at midnight. The death must have come shortly thereafter. No one in his family had any warning of his passing until they tried to wake him Sunday morning. Ornes, who was born in Norway, came to Manitowoc in 1870 and has resided here ever since. He was 70 years of age and is survived by his sorrowing widow and 4 children. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon. Der Nord Westen, 22 Aug 1907 ******** DEATH CAME WITH NO WARNING Mads Ornes, Aged Resident of the City, Dies During Night's Sleep. Death's summons was unexpected and came suddenly and without warning to Mads Ornes, one of the city's best known residents, who was found dead in bed Sunday morning by members of the family. Mr. Ornes whose family home is on N. Tenth street, had retired early Saturday evening but had been unable to sleep and at midnight he was awake. Death must have occurred sometime after that hour, and was not discovered until the family called him for the morning. Mr. Ornes had been a sufferer from rheumatism for some time and while his condition was not serious there has always been the danger that the heart might be affected, and this is what resulted and caused death. Mr. Ornes was a native of Norway and was married there 50 years ago, the golden wedding celebration having been held Feb. 19, this year. Coming here in 1870. Mr. Ornes was for years engaged as a ship carpenter and was well know. Mrs. Ornes and four children survive, being Mrs. C. Pugh, Catherine and John, of Minneapolis and Fred of Mt. Vernon, Wash. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock from the late home to the First Norwegian Lutheran church, 8th and State street and interrment (sic) will be at Evergreen. The deceased was a native of Norway and was about 70 years of age. Mr. and Mrs. Ornes immigrated to this country in 1870. They celebrated their golden wedding on the 19th of last February. Mr. Ornes was a ship carpenter and was well and favorably known. A wife and four children survive him. The children are, John, Catherine, and Mrs. C. Pugh, Minneapolis, and Fred of Washington state. RESIDENTS HERE 37 YRS. Couple Wedded in Norway Came Here in 1870-Neighbors and Friends Call to Congratulate Them. February 19, fifty years ago, was the marriage day of Mr. and Mrs. Mads Ornes, well known pioneer residents of the city, and at the family home on North Tenth street Tuesday evening, relatives, neighbors and friends assembled to assist in commemorating the golden wedding anniversary and the occasion was made a memorable one. Present for the celebration were two of the four children of the couple John Ornes and Miss Katherine Ornes, of Minneapolis, and this fact added to the happiness of the worthy couple. Norway was the scene of the marriage of half a century ago and the early wedded life of the couple was passed there. Coming to America, Mr. and Mrs. Ornes located in Manitowoc in 1870 and during the thirty-seven years intervening, have been residents here. Three of the four children of the couple, John, Katherine and Mrs. Pugh, are residents of Minneapolis, while the fourth Fred Ornes, is engaged in the newspaper business at Mount Vernon, Washington. The latter visited here last summer and had planned to be present for the celebration Tuesday but was unable to attend. Mrs. Pugh a daughter, is seriously ill and anziety for her welfare was the one sorrow which intruded itself on the happiness of the occasion. No elaborate celebration of the anniversary had been planned and the gathering at the home was not a large one, including but twenty participants. It was an informal gathering and was given chiefly to tendering of congratulations and well wishes to the aged pair. Mr. and Mrs. Ornes found the chief enjoyment of the occasion in the visit of their children and recalling the memories of the long years of association. The marriage has been a happy one and the worthy couple enjoy the esteem of a circle of friends limited only by their acquaintance. Mr. and Mrs. Ornes, though advanced in years, are both enjoying excellent health and the expressed hope of friends that they may celebrate many more anniversaries of the event in Norway, bids fair to be realized. The couple were among the youngest in spirit at the gathering Tuesday evening. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Wednesday, February 20, 1907 P. 1

MARIE ORNES MOTHER OF JOHN ORNES DIES IN WESTERN HOME Body to Be Brought Here for Burial—Was 97 Yrs. Old Messages received by her son John in this city last night, announced the death of his mother, Mrs. Maria Ornes, at Mount Vernon, Wash., death occurring at 6 o’clock last evening, the end coming peacefully and without suffering and bring- ing to a close a lifetime of a span of years seldom equaled. Had Mrs. Ornes lived three more years she would have rounded out a full century. She was born May 22, 1826. Decedent came to this country from Norway with her husband and five children in 1870, coming direct to Manitowoc and remaining here until the death of her husband, Mads Ornes, whose death occurred in 1907. She then took up her home at Mount Vernon, Washington, with her son, Fred, where she resided continuously up to the time of her death. Buried in This City. The body will be brought to Manitowoc for burial and will be accompanied by her son, Fred, and daughter, Maria, and the funeral will take place at the First Norwegian church next Wednesday, the Rev. Ristad officiating. Coincident with receipt of the telegram announcing her death, came a letter to her son John, in which she reviewed the happy occasion of his visit only a few weeks ago and which was written last week. At the time Mr. Ornes visited her at Mount Vernon she was in her usual good health, mentality and spirits, and to show how well she retained her faculties and her interest in world affairs the letter dealt largely with the political situation in Europe. She demonstrated besides this an absorbing interest in music even up to the very last days of her life. In an accompanying photo on this page she will be seen seated at the piano and playing, an accomplishment which at her time of life was a phenomenon. The photo was taken in her own home at the age of 94. The surviving family consists of her two sons, John, Manager for the O. Torrison Co. of this city; Fred of Mount Vernon, Wash., with whom she made her home; Katrina, Mount Vernon; and Mrs. C. W. Pugh, Minneapolis. One child, also named Fred, died in early infancy shortly after arrival of the family in America and another son; Thorval, who died in California. Older residents of the city will remember Mrs. Ornes as a kindly neighborly woman of unusual attainments and fine attributes of character. She was particularly fond of her family and her family was proud of her, as well they might be. Each year, whenever it was possible for the children to congregate at the Mount Vernon home, an annual homecoming was enjoyed, and it is particularly gratifying at this time to her son John in this city that he only so recently made his western trip, coincident with one of these occasions, remembrance of a visit he will always cherish. The paper appears to have a most flourishing look and is liberally patronized by advertisers giving evidence that the Manitowoc publisher is prosperous. ROBERT G. ORR MAN SHOT TO DEATH, AUTHORITIES QUIZ WIFE Robert Orr Shot in Home Near Collins Manitowoc County Sheriff''s men were conferring today with District Attorney, Robert Koutnik on possible charges against a rural county woman whose 38 year old husband was found shot to death in their home early today. Dr. Theodore Teitgen, County Coroner, identified the victim as Robert Orr, a night shift worker at the Brillion Iron Works. Orr was pronounced dead in an ambulance bring him to a hospital here from the farm home the family rented in the Town of Eaton, 2 1/2 miles southwest of Collins, near the Manitowoc-Calumet County line. The home is owned by Elmer Draheim. Manitowoc County traffic police received a call from Orr's 29 year old wife, Cora, the mother of three, shortly after 6 am, reporting that her husband had been shot. When the sheriff's deputies arrived at the scene they found Orr lying face up on the kitchen floor with two 22 caliber bullet wounds in his chest. Coroner Teitgen quoted the woman as saying that her husband arrived home intoxicated from Brillion some time earlier and began abusing her. He normally works until midnight at the Iron Works. The coroner said a 22 caliber pistol was found on the kitchen table and that Orr had apparently been shot in the adjoining dining room, stumbled into the kitchen and collapsed on the floor. Sheriff's men and the district attorney were continuing their questioning of the woman who has two small children at home, 2 and 3 years of age. An older child is reportedly living with grandparents in Iowa. The younger children were temporarily being cared for by the County Public Welfare Dept. The family reportedly moved in the area in July from Eagle River, but had also previously lived in New Holstein and Green Bay areas. Sheboygan Press, Thursday, Dec. 22, 1966 page 1

EMMA OTHERSALL SECOND DEATH AS RESULT OF THE EXPLOSION Mrs. Othersoll(sic) Who Suffered Stroke From Shock is Dead FIRST CHILD BORN AT COOPERSTOWN Second death due to the dynamite explosion on the Maresh farm west of the city occurred today with the demise of Mrs. E.C. Othersoll(sic) an aged resident of the city who succumbed at the home of her daughter Mrs. Edward Mohr, after an illness since the day of the tragedy in the Mlada home. Mrs. Othersoll died from paralysis. Shock attending the explosion was the immediate cause of a paralytic stroke which Mrs. Othersoll suffered when the explosion took place. Since that day she has been confined to her bed and has been constantly attended by a physician. For two days past she had been ailing rapidly and the end came today. The members of the family had been summoned and several were with her at death. First child at Cooperstown Mrs. Othersoll was the first white child born at Cooperstown, this county and moved to this city with the family in her girlhood. She lived here ever since and was one of the pioneers who will be remembered by the older residents. She was married here and had survived her husband nine years. She was married at the early age of thirteen. Decedent was a member of the Episcopal faith and though never actively identified with church work was a Christian woman whose character was an inspiration to others with whom she came in contact. Although the driver of the truck that caused the smashup stopped his car, he later drove away and the name of the firm owning the truck was not ascertained up to two o’clock this afternoon, dispatches from Green Bay stated. Mr. Owart, Manitowoc painting contractor, and Mrs. Owart were driving back toward Manitowoc in an effort to get home before the full fury of the blizzard struck. Mr. Owart was at the wheel and said when interviewed at the hospital this morning that he was driving with one wheel on the gravel outside of the cement strip. The truck of a Milwaukee trucking concern with a trailer passed him but in turning back into the right side of the highway the driver turned in too quickly and the trailer skidded and caught the Owart car, sideswiping it, and then overturned it in the ditch. Taken To Green Bay The car was almost completely wrecked. Passing motorists succeeded in releasing the Manitowoc couple from the wrecked machine and Mrs. Owart, who was the most seriously injured, suffering from a hemorrhage of the brain and broken ribs, was placed in a car driven by a Denmark garage man and rushed to a Green Bay hospital. Mr. Owart suffered only bruises and did not require immediate hospital attention. Mrs. Owart’s condition grew gradually worse this morning and she died at 11:30 o’clock. (snip) To Be Buried Here Mr. and Mrs. Owart resided at 1206 South Eleventh street here. She was 56 years of age and her maiden name was Mary Landt. Besides her husband she is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Herbert Tech, Linda, Irma and Leona, all of this city, three sons, Walter, Carl and Leroy, an aged mother Mrs. Landt of Mishicot, one sister, Mrs. William Kracht and two brothers, Louis and Ben. The funeral will probably be held from the Vogelsang funeral home. ********* Order Inquest In Mrs. Owart’s Death TRAGEDY IS CLIMAX TO MERCY ERRAND Mr. and Mrs. Owart Enroute Home From Visit to Dying Sister When Accident Occurred Tragedy, which claimed the life of Mrs. Charles Owart this city Friday evening when she was fatally injured near Denmark as her husband’s car was overturned when side- swiped by a truck, came as Mr. and Mrs. Owart were returning from a mission of mercy to Mr. Owart’s sister at Loomis, Wis., it was revealed upon Mr. Owart’s arrival in the city Saturday afternoon. Mr. Owart had responded to a plea from his sister who is seriously ill that he visit her before her death which she felt was near and it was while on the return trip that the accident occurred. Mr. Owart who returned here Saturday night from Green Bay told with tears in his eyes how he had listened to the plea of his wife that she be taken with him on his trip to visit his sister, Mrs. Dora Petri, at Loomis. Together they motored up to that place for a visit and started back home shortly after dinner. They reached Green Bay at four o’clock and were proceeding at a speed of only 20 miles an hour when a long platform trailer of the Auto Convoy Co., of Milwaukee, enroute back to Milwaukee passed them near Denmark. (snip) Funeral on Wednesday Funeral services for Mrs. Owart will be held on Wednesday afternoon at 1:45 from the home on South Eleventh street and at two o’clock from the St. John’s Evangelical church. Besides the husband, four daughters, three sons, Mrs. Owart’s aged mother, Mrs. Barbara Landt also survive. Mrs. Landt, whose home is at Mishicot, has not been told of her daughter’s death as it is feared the shock would be too much for her enfeebled condition. Two brothers and a sister also survive. The deceased was a member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Eagles and the Ladies Aid Society of the St. John’s church. Manitowoc Herald News, March 30, 1931 P. 2 ******** ACCUSE DRIVER IN OWART DEATH A coroner's inquest into the manner in which Mrs. Charles Owart of this city came to her death near Denmark in Brown County on March 27, was held at Green Bay last Thursday. Mr. Owart testified that his car was way over at the right and that the trailer of a big truck passing hi from behind knocked the car into the ditch killing Mrs. Owart. A second truck driver of the same fleet who was farther behind said that the truck or trailer never came in contact with Mr. Owart's car, but was hard put to it to explain how Mr. Owart's left rear wheel was smashed to bits and the rest of the car not injured. The driver under accusation said he couldn't see whether the trailer hit or not, but he felt no jar. The jury lost no time in agreeing with Mr. Owart that he had been bumped off the road and further found the driver, Chase Ghele, guilty of reckless driving. George Kennedy, formerly of this city, was foreman of the jury. Those big trucks with trailers used for conveying Ford cars are sixty feet long and the driver has practically no control of the rear end of the trailer. ROBERT OWEN Trucker Is Victim of Road Crash Robert Owen Killed, Five Others Injured When Car And Truck Collide A Manitowoc WPA worker was killed and five persons injured, two seriously, in a truck-automobile collision early Wednesday evening at the junction of Highways 10 and 55, five miles south of Kaukauna. Robert Owen, 38, of 819 Chicago street, driver of a truck for the Bahr construct- ion company, Manitowoc, was almost instantly killed when the truck he was driving struck a car driven by Arthur Lange, 6400 West Greenfield street, West Allis. Owen died before arrival of an ambulance. Two in Hospital Mr. and Mrs. C. E. Murdock, 722 South Story street, Appleton, passengers in the automobile, are in an Appleton hospital in a serious condition. Mr. Murdock has a broken right shoulder, brain concussion, fractured ribs and severe lacerations. His wife has a severe back injury and lacerations. Lange, a brother-in-law of Mr. Murdock, who was driving the latter’s newly purchased car to Appleton from Manitowoc, was badly shaken up but not seriously injured. Miss Edna Belle Murdock, 16, and Richard Eichhoff, 8, both of Appleton, passengers in the car, sustained cuts and bruises. The accident happened at what motorists term “one of the most dangerous intersections in northeaster Wisconsin.” The Murdock car was enroute west on Highway 10 while Owen had just come out of Highway 55 from the north on his way to Manitowoc from Little Chute. It was Owen’s second trip there yesterday with a load of supplies for the Bahr company. Thrown From Cab of Truck According to reports of the accident from Calumet county today, the force of the impact threw Owen from the cab of the truck and 30 feet down the pavement. He sustained a crushed skull, broken shoulder and sprained arms. The top portion of his body was severely lacerated. According to one witness the truck driven by Owen passed another machine that stopped for the arterial at the junction of the two highways and came out on Highway 10 just as the Murdock car was driven west. A coroner’s jury was drawn and Chilton authorities today said an inquest will probably be held in an effort to fix blame for the accident. The body of Mr. Owen at first brought to the hospital here, was later moved to the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home. Funeral Saturday Funeral services for Mr. Owen will be held Saturday at 10:30 a.m. at the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home. They will be in charge of the Rev.
