KARL M. MILLER Karl M. Miller, age 85, of 1234 Westwood Lane, Manitowoc, died on Wednesday morning, Feb. 13, 2008, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc. He was born on Oct. 13, 1922, in Kaukauna, son of the late Herman and Viola (Lemke) Miller. On May 4, 1946, he married the former Betty Barkley in Milwaukee. She preceded him in death on March 20, 2006. (As stated in the Profiles in History from 1999 by Marge Miley) He came to Manitowoc from Eau Claire in 1951 to teach orchestra at Lincoln and the elementary schools. Encouraged by William Steinburg, conductor of the Buffalo Symphony, he chose Manitowoc because he believed the city would support a civic symphony orchestra, which he founded that same year. The board of the Manitowoc School of Vocational and Adult Education agreed to sponsor an orchestra. Musicians were recruited, and rehearsals began in the fall of 1951. The new orchestra's first concert was in May of 1952, and it was a benefit to raise funds for a community bandshell. Miller conducted the orchestra for its first 35 years, retiring in 1986. The Vocational and Adult Education Board continued its sponsorship for 18 years, and then it was assumed by the city of Manitowoc. Admission to the orchestra's two yearly concerts were free, and they were presented in Lincoln High School auditorium. The Manitowoc Symphony Orchestra Association Incorporated was organized early in 1954. It raised funds to help pay outside musicians to play in the orchestra and for guest soloists. He grew up in Kaukauna, moving to Madison when he was a freshman in high school. He played in both the band and orchestra in high school, and in the Madison Symphony Orchestra, and he also led one of the most popular big bands in the area. His instrument was the trumpet. He entered the U.S. Air Force in 1942, and played in the 16th Air Force Band until 1946. He graduated with honors from the University of Wisconsin School of Music in Madison in 1949 and taught in Eau Claire for two years before coming to Manitowoc. Miller continued to make his home in Manitowoc, and has played trumpet in the Lakeshore Wind Ensemble, Jazz Ensemble and The Biggest of the Big Bands at the University of Wisconsin-Manitowoc since 1988. He enjoyed sailing, racing Lightnings with his son, (private), before he retired and on the Meershaum with his son, (private), after his retirement. He also enjoyed traveling to Arizona with Betty to watch spring training and watch (private) high school baseball teams. He was also an avid tennis player until he was 82 years old. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) He was preceded in death by a granddaughter: Megan Barkley Miller; and a brother: David Miller. ERNA MITTNACHT WEST SIDE WOMAN SEVERELY BURNED WHEN CLOTHING IS FIRED BY BLAZING PAPER Mrs. Lester Mittnacht, 24, in Precarious Condition at Hospital as Result of Accident at Her Home this Morning. Body Badly Burned Suffering from severe burns to her body, sustained when her clothing was ignited while she was starting a fire at her home on Twenty-sixth street early today, Mrs. Lester Mittnacht is at the hospital in precarious condition and grave fears are entertained for her life. The accident happened at 9 this morning. Mrs. Mittnacht, who is 24 and whose husband is employed as a brakeman on the Northwestern road, had laid a fire in the stove, using paper but it failed to burn and she made another attempt, lighting the paper, the flame from which burst from the stove and ignited her skirt, which in a second was a blaze. Suffering from pain and fright Mrs. Mittnacht rushed from the house into the open air where the wind fanned the flames and in a moment the woman was a living torch, her clothing being completely aflame. Cries of Mrs. Mittnacht attracted the attention of workmen at the Home Builders’ addition near by and Edward Herman and others rushed to her assistance, but not before she had been seriously burned. Mr. Herman secured a blanket and with others succeeded in smothering the flames after pulling part of the burning clothing from the woman’s body. The ambulance was called and Mrs. Mittnacht was removed to the hospital where Drs. Meany and Hammond attended her. It was found upon examination that Mrs. Mittnacht had suffered extremely severe burns, one half of the body on the back and limbs being terribly affected and she suffered greatly. The most severe burns are about the limbs though the back is also badly burned. The face and neck escaped severe injury. Mrs. Mittnacht is 24 years of age and the wife of Lester Mittnacht, who is employed as a brakeman by the Northwestern line. She is the mother of two small children. Physicians said this afternoon that Mrs. Mittnacht’s condition was serious but that there was a chance that she would survive. MITTNACHT SATURDAY PROVE FATAL, PASSES AWAY AT HOSPITAL Burns which she suffered a few days ago when her clothing was fired while she was lighting a fire at her home, proved fatal for Mrs. Lester Mittnacht, Twenty-sixth street, Mrs. Mittnacht passing away at the hospital this morning. Mrs. Peter Mittnacht, mother in law of the unfortunate victim and E.R. Herman, who was engaged at work near by, rushed to assistance of the woman and succeeded in smothering the flames but not before fatal burns had been inflicted. Mrs. Mittnacht was removed to the hospital and hopes were entertained that she would live but the shock was too great.
