FREDERICK S. LUHMAN DR. LUHMAN, CIVIC LEADER, PHYSICIAN FOR COUNTY, DIES Dies at 82 Of A Stroke After Long Service; Funeral Friday Dr. Frederick S. Luhman, 82, (photo) who began the practice of medicine in Manitowoc in 1880, and who enjoyed the distinction of being the oldest active official of Manitowoc county in point of service, died of a stroke Tuesday night at his home, 1013 South Eighth street. He was stricken at his home Monday morning and died without regaining conscousness. Despite more than four score years, Dr. Luhman, who for over 35 years was county physician and who during his long practice here also served eight terms as county coroner, continued the active practice of medicine. He insisted on "staying in the harness" and made daily calls on patients in whose families he had been the attending physician for half a century or more. The passing of Dr. Luhman last night ended an active community life that began when he was a boy of 15 years when he took up the teaching of the district school in the town of Newton. A graduate of the University of Wisconsin, Rush Medical college and a post graduate of the best medical schools in Vienna, Austria, Dr. Luhman located in this city in 1880, became one of the county's leading practitioners. Funeral Friday He served on the board of the school distrct that erected and had charge of the old First Ward school in the days of the district school system in Manitowoc. Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from the home, under the auspices of the Masonic lodge of which the deceased was a member, almost since reaching his majority. Rev. Wm. Hood will officiate and interment will be at Evergreen cemetery. The Elks lodge, of which Dr. Luhman was a life member, will also be represented at the services. Frederick S. Luhman was born May 25, 1851, at Franklin, Sheboygan county, and when a boy in his teens was pressed into service to teach the district schools in the town of Newton. He had barely passed his fifteenth birthday at that time. Later he attended Ripon college for two years, and still later entered the University of Wisconsin, from which he graduated in 1875. He next enrolled in Rush Medical college at Chicago, being graduated and given a diploma for the practice of medicine in 1877. Went to Europe After practicing for a year at Two Rivers, Dr. Luhman was married in this city to Miss Magdalene Simon. They left for Europe where Dr. Luhman took post graduate work in the medical schools in Vienna, remaining there for two years. After being graduated there he returned to Manitowoc where in 1880 he established himself in the practice of medicine. He continured that practice over a span of 52 years without interruption. Dr. Luhman took up his first duties as a county official fifty years ago this month, in January, 1883. He was elected coroner in the fall of 1882 and assumed office the next year. He was chosen coroner for seven successive terms, 14 years. Then he retired but in 1898 he was again named coroner for another term. Retiring from this office Dr. Luhman was selected by the county board of supervisors to serve as county physician, and he continued to fill this office year after year, being renamed without opposition by the county board. In still later years he was also chosen the physician at the county asylum and only gave up this post last year. Golden Wedding The deceased served several terms as a member of the school board of the south side school district under the old district system of schools here. During the World War Dr. Luhman served as medical examiner for the draft board. For years he served as examining (Continued on page 11) (Continued from page 1) physician for the Northwestern Mutual Life Insurance company, the Metropolitan, Prudential and a number of other old line life insurance companies. Four years ago Dr. and Mrs. Luhman observed their golden wedding anniversary with a gathering of their children and hosts of friends at their South Eighth street home, and were looking forward to the 55th anniversary which they had hoped to celebrate this coming summer. Besides his widow, Dr. Luhman is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Elsa Zeniner, and Mrs. Elmer Bleser, both of this city, and two son, Dr. Frederich W. Luhman of Bender, Nebraska, and Attorney Hugo F. Luhman of Yakima, Wash, one sister, Miss Emma Luhman of Los Angeles, Cal., three brothers, Otto of Seattle, Wash., Henry of Fostville, Iowa, and Theodore of Los Angeles, Cal., six grandchildren and two great grand- children also survive. Manitowoc Herald Times, Wednesday, January 11, 1933 P.1 ********* What threatened to be a serious accident was narrowly averted at Eleventh and Washington streets, yesterday, one block from the already famous Death Crossing, when a city street car crashed into the buggy of Dr. Luhman from the rear. Dr. Luhman was proceeding west on Washington street when, in order to avoid material left in the street by workmen on the Mikado theatre, he turned onto the car track. The car was right upon the rig and although Joseph Giemer, the motorman, reversed the motor, it struck the vehicle and tossed it from the track. The buggy narrowly escaped being overturned, but fortunately no damage was done. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Wednesday, January 5, 1916 P.3 ******** [bur. 01-13-1933/age 81 yrs/cause: apoplexy]

MARY LULING On Mon. Mrs. Luling, wife of our fellow citizen Charles Luling, suffered a stroke, the aftermath of which suggests that death is near. Der Nord Westen, 11 Feb. 1892 ****** From the Files of the Pilot - Twenty-Five Years ago (1892) Mrs. Charles Luling of this city died on Sunday morning, having the week previously received a stroke of paralysis from which she never rallied. She had been in poor health for some time before her death, though a fatal termination was not looked for until the paralytic stroke had hope vain. She was born at Brest, New York, December 26, 1837 and was married to Charles Luling October 26, 1864. She was a woman devoted to her family and it was only in the domestic circle that her genuine worth shone in its full luster. Her home impressed the visitor with its warmth of welcome and the devotion of husband and children was a tribute to excellence which invested the wife and mother with a wealth which made worldly good appear poor in contrast. Devoted to her church, her sympathies took wider range and she was honored and loved by all. Few women had more to make life sweet in the way of devotion and affection which knew no restraint and which were reciprocated with all the fervor of their offering. There was a genialty about the surroundings of the homestead which was a reflection of the happiness and content which dwelled therein. Sympathy flows out of the stricken family in its unstinted measure as it has in the past from them when sorrow darkened the home of friends and neighbors. Manitowoc Pilot, Thursday, Feb. 15, 1917 ****** Mrs. Luling, whose stroke we reported on last week, died last Sun. morning. She was born 26 Dec. 1837 in Brest, State of New York, and married Charles Luling on 26 Oct. 1867. She is survived by her husband and 2 grown children – Mr. E.G. CHARLES W. LYON The friends of Charley Lyon(sic) will regret to learn that he is dangerously ill with the Typhoid fever. For two years past Charley has kept the books of this establishment, and in fact, has represented a one-third interest in the firm. Hard study and close application to business with insufficient exercise have brought him down but at this writing we have hopes of his ultimate recovery. He has been sick two weeks and we miss him very much. Manitowoc Tribune Thursday, February 11, 1869 pg. 4 ******** DIED: On the morning of the 16th of Typhus fever, Charles W. only son of Walter and Huldah L. Lyon, aged 19 years 2 months and 7 days. It is with sorrowful hearts that we record the death of a member of our firm, a young man just stepping over the threshold of life, but he is gone and we would write of his manly qualities as a slight tribute of respect and affection- -the last we can ever pay him--in return for the numberless acts of kindness towards us. Charles W. Lyon was born at Port Washington in this State, December 9th, 1849. He early exhibited a desire for books, and gave evidence of a powerful mind. Sent to school he acquired knowledge rapidly and became a good scholar. He came to Manitowoc with his father's family during the summer of 1858, and attended school here until sometime in the summer of 1865. That he made Excellent use of his time we have had ample evidence during the past two years. Leaving school he went into the Telegraph office and became a very fair operator in a few months, but our business increasing it necessary to employ a book-keeper and clerk. Charles entered on the duties of the situation, January 1st, 1866. At the end of the year 1866 so faithful and well had he performed his arduous duties that he became a member of the firm, representing a one third interest. If he had done well before he now did much better. Early and late he was found at his labor. He seemed to take delight in nothing so well as hard work. His friends fearing that he would make himself sick by such unceasing application remonstrated with him wholly but in vain. During the whole year of 1867 he did not lose a day's time from any cause. Not satisfied with doing well, he sought to excel all, and taking up the study of Phonography during leisure hours, he followed it through all its tortuous winding ways, until with practice he would have become an excellent short hand reporter. As a proof reader he was a success. Often when the editors were busy, or for any reason unable to attend to this difficult part of their duties he tendered his services and rendered satisfactory assistance. In his deal he was strictly honest and exact, sure to get every farthing due him, and yet unwilling under any circumstances to take that which belonged to another. Thus we have briefly sketched the line of duty which our partner followed; it remains to sketch him as our companion and friend. But how can we perform the sad task? We mourn for him as for an own brother, and while tears dim our eyes and choking grief would fain find utterance, how can the hand write out the thoughts which fill the throbbing brain? "Tis a difficult work and yet it must be done. Young Lyon was a very reticent, unassuming, modest boy. It was next to impossible for a stranger to get an extended opinion from him on any subject, so much did he distrust his own powers, and for this reason he never appeared well in public, but to those who knew him best he was the embodiment of all that is good and true in man. We were a full year in getting a just estimate of his character, and perhaps had we known him even better than we did we could have averted the sad fate which has befallen him. He preferred his work to play, and blind to the fact that disease was fastening its hold on his young vitals we did not use all our influence to make him exercise in the open air; which as, we see now, was just as essential to his growth and physical development as to the forest oak. When he did play, however, it was with spirit; only four weeks ago we saw him tire out two strong skates, one after the other, and still be asserted he was not weary. But even then, probably, the fatal fever with insidious fire was coursing through his veins. He finally, three weeks ago, complained a little, and one morning he did not come to his work. How strange it seemed not to have Charley here, and how irksome were the duties which he had performed so quietly. Alas we were to learn to do without him altogether, and forever in this world. It is a bitter lesson, but one that is often learned. Charley has been a member of the Presbyterian Sabbath School in this place for many years, and seldom indeed has he been absent. For some months past he has acted as Librarian, in which capacity he won the good opinion of all connected with the school, which will miss him now. Socially he had but few personal friends as he was just at that age when young men are backward, but he had an exceedingly large circle of acquaintance, and among all those who knew him we do not think he had a single enemy, and we never heard an ill word spoken of him in all the time we have known him. As is the case with most young men who give all their time to some useful occupation he had no bad habits of any kin, he sought to be a gentleman, and in the eyes of the community he succeeded admirable. His last illness came on very gradually. The first week we did not apprehend anything serious, and looked each day to see him better. He did not complain of any pain but lost his appetite entirely, and gradually was found to have a fever. One morning we called in and found him in a raving delirium. From that hour until his death, about a week's time, we do not think he was possessed of his right mind a moment, or at least sufficiently so to realize his terrible condition. He suffered intensely and only yielded up his strength when human endurance could bear the pain no longer. A few moments before he breathed his last the writer hereof spoke to him, as he seemed easier, calling him by name, but it was of no avail, he had done with this earth, and shortly after his breathing became more faint, and he quietly went to rest; a slight shudder was all that told us that Charley was no more. The funeral was held at the residence of his father on Wednesday afternoon. A large concourse of citizens assembled, a few brief, but well timed remarks, a fervent prayer, a last, final, lingering look and all that remained of our dear boy was borne away by those who had known him in life, to be placed in his narrow home, where no pain invades, no sickness ever come, and even Death can do no more. We cannot close this article without in the name of the afflicted family, and in our own behalf, returning heartfelt thanks to those kind friends whose sympathy and efficient aid were so sadly needed, so freely tendered in this hour of deep affliction. God grant that when it shall be yours to lie down in the cold embrace of Death that you may have no lack of loving hands to smooth your dying pillow, nor gentle fingers to close your eyes in their last, long, quiet sleep.
