Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at St. John United Church of Christ, Manitowoc. The Rev. Paul Blaufuss will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mr. Lade was born Aug. 24, 1903, at Manitowoc, son of the late Richard and Rose Schmidt Lade. He married Rose Bortsky Aug. 2, 1922, at Two Rivers. His wife preceded him in death July 29, 1951. Mr. Lade was a commercial fisherman on Lake Michigan for 50 years. He also owned and operated Lade’s Fish market at Manitowoc. He was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 706 of Manitowoc. RICHARD LADE Richard Lade, 84, commercial fisherman at Manitowoc for 60 years, died at 6 a.m. Monday at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Mr. Lade, who resided at 1223 Grand Ave., Manitowoc, had been hospitalized three weeks. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc. The Rev. Paul H. Blaufuss will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Mr. Lade was born at Little Suamico, Wis., Dec. 21, 1875, a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fehrman Lade. He came to Manitowoc as a young man where March 8, 1898, he married Rose Schmidt. Before retirement five years ago he was a commercial fisherman for more than 60 years. Mrs. Lade died Thanksgiving Day, 1939. While at Little Suamico Mr. Lade gained experience as a fisherman working on rigs operated out of that Oconto County community. He often recalled the huge catches of perch, now a prized food, which were shunned in favor of herring. Three generations of Lades operated the fishing rig out of Manitowoc until he retired. Surviving are a son, Edwin R. of Manitowoc, with whom he resided; two brothers, Henry of Milwaukee and Edward of Green Bay; a sister, Mrs. Joseph Lanso of Baileys Harbor and two grandsons. ESTHER LADWIG Mrs. Esther Ladwig, widow of William Ladwig, passed away after a year's illness at Maple Crest sanitarium Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock at the age of 27 years. The funeral held Monday afternoon from the home with services at St. Johns Lutheran church. Burial was at Evergreen cemetery in Manitowoc. The Rev. W. G. Hasse officiated at the services. Henry Ladwig was born in Germany February 22, 1836, eighty years ago and was married there coming to America a few years afterwards. He was thirty-two when he came to Manitowoc to make his home and for ten years worked on the farm and rented. Mrs. Ladwig, despite her 82 years, had enjoyed remarkable health and had not been ill. While about the house last evening preparing to retire she suddenly fell to the floor and expired before medical aid could be summoned. Mrs. Ladwig is survived by six children, Mrs. C. Hendries, Henry, August, Edward and Albert Ladwig and Mrs. Steckmesser. Two brothers, Carl and Edward Brey of this city and two sisters, one Mrs. Kummerow, of Two Rivers, survive. KAROLINE LADWIG DIES IN HOUSE WHICH WAS HOME 73 YRS. Mrs. Caroline Ladwig, widow of Christ Ladwig, died at the family home, 1301 South Tenth street, last night at 9:30 after an illness of many months. Last November she suffered a broken hip in a fall at the home and for weeks was a patient at the Holy Family hospital. Later she was returned to her home where death followed last evening. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon with services at the Lutheran church, Eighth and Marshall street, at 2 o'clock, the Rev. Karl Machmiller officiating, and burial will be at Evergreen. Mrs. Ladwig, nee Koebke, was born in the same home where she died and would have been seventy-three at her next birthday, August 2. At the age of eighteen she was married to Christ Ladwig and he died four years ago as the couple were preparing to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary. Five children also preceded Mrs. Ladwig in death and she is survived by one daughter, Miss Lillian Ladwig, at home and by seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. Always a home body Mrs. Ladwig devoted her life to her family and outside of her church affiliation belonged to no organizations. ALBERT LANDRETH From Der Nord Westen, 20 Apr. 1899: Word arrived here Sun. morning that Albert Landreth died Sat. evening in Florida. The local resident had built a home there in which to spend the winter months. Last Nov. he and his family made the trip down there again and all communications from there indicated everything was fine until the report of his death from malarial fever was received. The deceased was born 04 Feb. 1858 in Bristol, Bucks County, Pennsylvania, and one can conclude that he was of Pennsylvania Dutch derivation. Mr. Landreth came to Manitowoc in 1875 and established a nursery, then in 1889 he established a factory for canning peas which became nationally known. He built another pea canning plant in Sheboygan in 1893. From these he became a very wealthy man. He is survived by a widow and 3 children. His body was brought here and will be buried this afternoon in the city cemetery.
ARNOLD G. LANG Arnold G. Lang, 70, of 936 S. 37th St., Manitowoc, died early Sunday morning at home of an apparent coronary attack. ROSE LANG Mrs. John Lang, 90, of 1911 Western Ave., Manitowoc, died Saturday afternoon at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. The former Rose Kohn was born Dec. 8, 1872, at Centerville, Manitowoc County, daughter of the late Martin and Margaret Wagner Kohn. She was married at Centerville to John Lang May 15, 1895, and the couple resided in the village until 1902, coming to Manitowoc. Mrs. Lang was a member of Germania Society and Christian Mothers Alter Society of St. Paul Church. Mr. Lang died May 26, 1962. The couple observed the 65th anniversary of its wedding May 15, 1960. AMANDA LARSON Mrs. Edward Larson, 81, of Tacoma, Wash., formerly of Manitowoc, died Sunday at a Tacoma hospital. Memorial services will be Wednesday at the church of which she was a member at Tacoma, followed by cremation, the ashes to be interred at Evergreen cemetery, Manitowoc, Friday or Saturday. The former Amanda Mueller was born June 7, 1883, at Mishicot, daughter of the former village treasurer, Bruno Mueller, and Minnie Vogt Mueller. She was graduated from high school and married to Edward Larson June 22, 1903, at First Lutheran Church, Manitowoc. They observed their golden wedding anniversary in 1953. Mr. Larson died in 1955. CHARLES LARSON From Der Nord Westen, 16 Jan. 1902: An unfortunate fatal accident took place Mon. on the farm of John Ewen about 3 miles north of Manitowoc. While workmen were felling trees one of them dropped on 17-yr. old John Larson of Manitowoc with such force that he was killed instantly. He is the son of John Larson who is employed in the shipyard. The decedent was born here and was an energetic and aspiring young man. (Note: The Burial Register has Charles Larson, male, age 17, born in Manitowoc, cause: accident - skull. MARILYN BRANDT LARSON Marilyn Brandt Larson, age 80, of Richfield, formerly of Manitowoc, died on Wednesday morning, June 17, 2009, at Columbia-St. Mary’s Hospital Ozaukee, Mequon. The former Marilyn Brandt was born on Feb. 5, 1929, in Manitowoc, daughter of the late Leo and Ida (Schmidt) Brandt. She was a 1947 graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High School. Marilyn worked for many years as executive secretary for the vice president of Rahr Malting Company in Manitowoc. She married Dr. Arthur N. Larson on July 7, 1965, in Alexandria, Minn. He preceded her in death on April 9, 1995. She was a former member of St. James Episcopal Church and the Business and Professional Womens Club of Manitowoc. (Survivors omitted for privacy) She was preceded in death by her parents; Leo and Ida Brandt; her husband: Dr. Arthur N. Larson; three brothers: Col. Leo M. Brandt; John Brandt; David Brandt; two sisters: June Stehn and Althea Lippert; three brothers-in-law: Harvey Lippert, Randolph Stehn, and Dr. Theodore G. Larson. WALTER O. LAUFS From Der Nord Westen, 18 Feb. 1909: Walter Laufs, who came here from Germany last fall with Henry Vits and who since then has been working at the aluminum ware factory, fell ill last week with appendicitis. He was quickly taken to Holy Family Hospital where it was found that the illness was so advanced that an operation would not help, and he died Saturday. Mr. Laufs, a nephew of Henry Vits, had not intended to remain in this country, but rather to get to know the people and the nation and then go back to his homeland. Now his grave is here. He was 25 years old. Mr. Vits telegraphed the sad news to the boy’s parents in Germany. His funeral here was conducted Monday from the German Reformed Church.

MINNIE LAVECK MRS. LAVECK DIES, KOSSUTH Funeral Services Are To Take Place On Thursday Mrs. Theodore Laveck, age 59, died at her home in Kossuth Monday night after a lingering illness. Services will take place at the home Thursday at 1:30 p.m. and at 2 p.m. at the Bethany Reformed church, Branch, under the direction of Rev. Menke. The deceased will be buried at the Evergreen cemetery following the service. Mrs. Laveck, nee Minnie Fricke, was born in the town of Rapids May 7, 1874. She married Theodore Laveck on January 27, 1900, and after living in Manitowoc several years, the family moved to Kossuth where they engaged in farming. Mrs. Laveck was a member of the Ladies Aid Society of the Bethany Reformed church of Branch. Besides the husband, the deceased is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Joseph Kutil of Branch and Mabel at home; two sons, Earl and Carl at home; two brothers, August Fricke of Loyal and William Fricke of Manitowoc; one sister, Mrs. Henry Zeddies of Newton; and two grand- children (private). LEWIS LAWRENCE L.S. LAWRENCE BORN HERE, 1851, PASSES AWAY Louis S. Lawrence, born in Manitowoc 77 years ago, and who has since resided here, passed away today at the Holy Family hospital, where he has been confined for the past four weeks. He has been in failing health from diseases incident to old age. With the passing of Mr. Lawrence the last member of one of the pioneer families of Manitowoc who located here in the late forties, now is deceased. He was born in 1851 in a home on the site where the couty asylum is now located. In recent years, with his wife, he has lived at 2510 Washington street. In 1882 he was married to Mary Allen, who with four daughters, two sons and seven grandchildren survive. The children are; Mrs. Walter Guerney, Ione, Wash., Mrs. George Specht, Milwaukee, Mrs. Frank Kolanchek, this city and Mrs. Louis McNamara, Milwaukee, William L. and Curtis Lawrence, both of this city. LINAS LAWRENCE Did He Kill His Father? Mystery Surrounding the Death of a Manitowoc Man Manitowoc, Jan. 5.- Linas Lawrence, an old and respected citizen, died last night. It is alleged that death was caused by a severe beating which his son Louis administered about two weeks ago. Mr. Lawrence had been confined to his bed ever since and had been gradually failing, until last night death ended his sufferings. He attended Manitowoc schools. He married Rose A. Benzinger Apr. 7, 1915, at Manitowoc. He was employed at Mirro Aluminum Co. for 45 years, retiring in 1956 as foreman of the small press department. He was a member of Mirro Retirement Club and was a 55-year member of the Odd Fellows Lodge, No. 55, of Manitowoc, serving in various offices. At the time of his death he was financial secretary of the lodge. Mr. and Mrs. Lawrence celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1965. Leo Schmitt will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mr. Ledvina was born Sept. 25, 1889, at Kellnersville, son of the late Lawrence and Catherine Reif Ledvina. He attended Kellnersville schools, Manitowoc Teachers College and was graduated from Marquette University Law School in 1915. He married Helen Denzin of Milwaukee May 29, 1917, at Chicago. Mr. Ledvina was a member of Wisconsin County Judges Assn., Wisconsin Juvenile Judges Assn., Wisconsin and Manitowoc County bar associations, member and former officer of Manitowoc Eagles Club Aerie, 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Manitowoc Council, and served as district deputy for the KCs while living in Park Falls. He was also a member of the Manitowoc County Historical Society, Holy Innocents Parish and its Holy Name Society, February Club and charter member of the Manitowoc Optimist Club. He received special recognition from the federal government for his volunteer work as special agent during World War II. Mr. Ledvina was influential in organizing the Manitowoc County Retreat League. MARGARET LEHMKUHL From Der Nord Westen, 24 Nov 1898 Death here early in the morning on St. 19 Nov. of Mrs. Margarethe Lehmkuhl of old age debility. she was the widow of Johann Dietrich Lehmkuhl who died about 5 yrs. ago. She was born 07 May 1817 in Hanover near the city of Bremen and came to America with her husband in 1848. The pair settled in Town Newton, Manitowoc County, when it was a wilderness and worked their way through all the difficulties of pioneer life. About 13 years ago, after they had turned the farm over to their sons, the old couple became residents of Manitowoc. There were 8 children born of the marriage, of whom 3 are deceased. The surviving children are: Mrs. Anna Fahnestock of New York, Mrs. Lena Daue of Milwaukee, and Mrs. Ida Carstens locally, as well as sons Gerhard J. and Heinrich A. Lehmkuhl. Her body was laid to rest Mon. afternoon at the city cemetery under the direction of Pastor Romoser of the German Methodist Church here. (see contributors page-Der Nord Westen)
JOHN LEICHTNAM JOHN LEICHTNAM DIES WHILE ON VISIT AT MILWAUKEE John Leichtnam, St. Nazianz, who was on a visit to his children at Milwaukee, passed away there on Tuesday. The remains will be brought to this city Thursday aternoon and taken to the Wattawa Urbanek Schlei parlors where they may be viewed until Saturday morning. Funeral services will be held Saturday morning at 9:30 from the Sacred Heart church. Four daughters, Mrs. Rose Nenning and Mrs. Mary Doyle, Milwaukee, Mrs. Ida Stelhoff, Stevens Point and Mrs. Frank Proell, St. Nazianz, survive. Mrs. Leichtnam passed away eleve years ago. CHARLES H. LEIDER Charles H. Leider, 64, of 2202 LaFollette Ave., Manitowoc, died Saturday evening at home. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Glenn H. Unke will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mr. Leider was born April 25, 1907, at Birnamwood, Wis., son of the late Charles and Anna Prelipp Leider. He was graduated from Birnamwood High School with the Class of 1924. In 1926, he moved to Manitowoc. He married Regina Ruether Aug. 30, 1930, at Forestville, Wis. He was accounting supervisor for Wisconsin Public Service Corp., Lakeshore Branch. He was president of the corporation Quarter Centry Club, member and first president of its Men's Club and president and treasurer of Manitowoc Credit Committee of WPSC. Additionally, he was former treasurer of Immanuel Lutheran Church and of the Men's Club of the church and a member of the former Manitowoc Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Leider had been active in a variety of sports. JOSEPH LEMBERGER Joseph Lemberger Ends Life With A Revolver CONDERN OVER LOSS OF WORK TOLD BY WIFE Second Shipyards Worker In Month To End Life Due To Unemployment Finding a revolver which his wife had hidden from him in fear that he would end his life, Joseph Lemberger, 49, shipyard worker, committed suicide Tuesday afternoon in the basement of his home, 905 Chicago street. His flat is in the rear of the Badger Hotel. He shot himself through the right temple with a .38 calibre revolver and died while he was being placed on the operating table at the Holy Family hospital. He was without steady employment the last few weeks, but previous to that had worked continuously. He had expressed concern over his ability to support himself and wife, but when his wife left for a short auto ride with Mrs. Edward Schreihart yesterday, he smilingly kissed her goodbye. Lemberger was found by his wife on her return. He was breathing heavily, his head propped up against a box. Discovery was made when Mrs. Lemberger went to the basement to secure food for the evening meal. Frank Poklinkoske, a son-in-law, slept through the shooting upstairs of the home. He is employed at the Crocker Brother garage on a night shift. Was Laid Off In earlier life Lemberger operated saloons at Grimms, and Antigo. For six years he was employed as a bartender for the late Adolph Schulze on Western Ave. For the past five years he was employed as a staging erector at the shipyards. When work became scarce Lemberger was laid off, and since then he worried considerably. His wife hid a revolver, which Lemberger had taken to a hardware store for repairs. Dr. George Hoffmann was called and had Lemberger removed to the hospital in the ambulance. He breathed his last just as he was being carried into the operating room. Coroner Gerald Rau of Two Rivers, who also was called, decided that there would be no inquest. The death of Lemberger marks the second suicide of a shipyards worker within a short period. Just a month ago yesterday William Ploeckelmann ended his life by hanging in the woodshed of his home here. Born In Whitelaw Lemberger was born in Whitelaw and spent his early life there. He was twice married. Two sons were born of his first marriage, Joseph and Edward, who reside in Chicago. In 1927 he was married at Antigo to Mrs. Amelia Winkleman of this city, who survives him with four brothers, Edward of Cato, Louis of Clarks Mills, Frank of Boyd, Wis., and George of Appleton, and six sisters, Miss Barbara Lemberger of Evanston, Ill., Sister Festina of Illinois, Mrs. George Schuh of Whitelaw, Mrs. Frances Heinrichs of Manitowoc Rapids, Mrs. Mary Neuser, city, and Mrs. Katie Heran of Hollandtown. MARCELLA LENEAU Mrs. Cortland Leneau, 55, of 1017 N. Sixth St., Manitowoc, died early Monday morning at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc where she had been a week. ELIZABETH LENZ From Der Nord Westen, 18 Jan. 1900: Death Sat. in the local hospital of Mrs. Elisabeth Lenz, a well-known and eminent resident of our city, of cancer. Mrs. Lenz had consulted Dr. Senn in Chicago, but he was unable to provide any hope. She was 69-yrs. of age and had come to Manitowoc with her husband, Jacob Lenz, from Germany and lived here ever since. In addition to her husband she leaves 3 sisters – Mrs. Lieder in Washington, Mrs. Werbke and Mrs. Krumheuer here and a brother Frank Gehbe in Clarks Mills. There were no children. The funeral was held Tues. afternoon at the city cemetery.
JACOB LENZ From Der Nord Westen, 24 Apr. 1902: Death yesterday morning following a long illness of 81-yr. old Jacob Lenz, one of the oldest settlers in our city. He came from Germany in the '40's, settling in Manitowoc in 1847 where he has lived ever since. He was involved in several types of businesses here, most recently a furniture store which he gave up to enjoy a wellearned rest. Following the death of his wife a few years ago he himself has been ill. He is not survived by any children. The last several years he has enjoyed the hospitality of his brother-in-law Carl Werbke here. The funeral was held Sat. afternoon.

ALVINA LEUBNER From Der Nord Westen, 15 Jan. 1891: Death on Sun. morning, after a long and terrible illness, of Mrs. Alvine Leubner, a long time resident of our city. She was born 27 July 1820 in Chemnitz, married Mr. Ernst Leubner in her 30th year and came with him and her eldest son to America in her 50th year. They settled here in Manitowoc where Mr. Leubner established a drugstore. In 1874 she suffered the loss of her son Otto who was studying the druggist business in his father’s store. Also in 1881 she lost her only daughter, just to have her husband follow soon after. She was ill several weeks preceding her death. Her funeral took place on Tues. in the city cemetery. Of her two surviving sons, the eldest, Paul, lives in Minneapolis and the other, Alfred, is in business here.

Leubner, of this city, died at the residence of his father-in-law, Hon. Chas. Esslinger, on Monday, the 16th of February last, of Consumption, at the age of 27 years, 10 months and 6 days. The deceased was a native of Saxony came to this city with his parents some twenty three years ago, since which time he has resided here constantly. He leaves a lovingly devoted wife, who was married to him less than a year; his aged parent, to whom he was a faithful son and his two brothers and a sister who all loved him for his goodness and constant devotion to their mutual contentment and interest, besides a host of friends, to whom he has endeared himself by his gentleness and reliability. Mr. Levenhagen was sitting in his armchair Mon. noon conversing with his wife and sank dead in the middle of a sentence. Mr. Levenhagen was born in Mecklenburg in 1821 and came to Manitowoc in 1855 where he has lived ever since. He formerly operated a fishery here but gave it up as old age approached. HENRY C. LEVENHAGEN (d. 1920) FIRST FLORIST OF CITY DEAD AT RIPE OLD AGE 84 H. Levenhagen, Sr., Passes Away Suddenly at Milwaukee Henry Levenhagen, Sr., pioneer gardener of the city who established the first greenhouses and for many years was engaged as a florist, died in Milwuakee yesterday at the advnced age of 84 years. News of Mr. Levenhagen's death came in messages to relatives containing announcement that the body would be shipped here today for burial. The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 from the home of Gust Levenhagen, 1211 So. Twelfth street. Mr. Levenhagen passed away at the home of his daughter in Milwaukee. He had contracted a cold but appeared to be improving when he was suddenly stricken. Despite his advanced age Mr. Levenhagen had enjoyed robust health up to a short time ago. Born in Mecklenburg, Germany, April 24, 1836, Mr. Levenhagen came to Manitowoc county in 1856 to join two brothers who had preceded him here. Later he located to St. Louis where he was married and with his wife returned here in 1858, engaging in business, building the first greenhouse the city had on a site on Madison street between Eighth and Ninth streets. Some time later Mr. Levenhagen purchased property and built a home and greenhouses on So. Tenth street on site of the present plant of the Rudolph company. His business prospered and was extended and continued until age caused him to retire. Mrs. Levnehagen preceded her husband in death eight years ago, passing away May 5, 1912. Four children, three sons and one daughter survive Mr. Levenhagen, Herman Levenhagen and Mrs. W.J. Schaefer, Milwaukee, Gust and Henry of this city. Eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren also survive. META LEVENHAGEN Mrs. Fred Levenhagen, 82, lifelong Manitowoc resident, died Friday evening at Memorial Hsopital, Manitowoc, where she had been a patient a day. She had made her home with a son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Paul Larsen, of 1108 N. 21st St. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Manitowoc, with the Rev. T.F. Uetzmann officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The former Meta Brey was born Oct. 22, 1877, daughter of the late Edward and Dorothea Schroeder Brey. She was married at Manitowoc Oct. 26, 1904, to Fred Levenhagen. He died in 1943. Mrs. Levenhagen was an honorary member of the Ladies Aid Society of the church. Surviving her are two sons, Earl and Frerick of Manitowoc; a daughter, Mrs. Paul Larsen of Manitowoc; a sister, Mrs. Emma Markle of Rochester, Minn.; 13 grandchildren and three great grandchildren. OLGA LEVERENZ Miss Olga Leverenz died at the family home at 1625 South Fifthteenth steet Monday evening following a brief illness. Death was due to flu pneumonia and followed an attack of but three days. Deceased was born in this city and has always made her home here. Since the death of her father, the late Fred Leverenz, she and a brother Edward have been keeping house at the family home. The brother is the only surviving member of the family. Miss Leverenz was 38 years of age. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon from the Vogelsang undertaking parlor at 1:30 with service at the German Lutheran church at 2 o'clock by Rev. SOPHIA LEVERENZ From Der Nord Westen, 26 May 1904: Death Sat. morning of Mrs. Carl Leverenz, after a long illness, of old age debility. The deceased was born Sophie Kansier on 23 Feb. 1825 in Siekow, Mecklenburg-Schwerin and married Carl Leverenz 25 Mar. 1843. The couple came to America in 1851 and traveled to Milwaukee via Canada, stayed there about 6 weeks and then came to Manitowoc where they have lived ever since. Here they overcame all the difficulties and troubles of the pioneer life and enjoyed the highest admiration of their fellow citizens. In March last year the couple celebrated their Diamond Wedding Anniversary. The inroads of age increased over the last year until she closed her tired eyes in death last Sat. Her husband, who celebrated his 81st birthday on 01 May, has suffered a terrible blow in the loss of his life partner. In addition to her husband, Mrs. Leverenz is survived by 7 children, namely, Friedrike Schenk and Mrs. Auguste Falge in Manitowoc, Wilhelm Leverenz in San Francisco; Mrs. Henriette Staus, Carl, Frank, and Arthur Leverenz in Manitowoc.The funeral was held in the afternoon day before yesterday. ******* [bur. 05-21-1904/age 79 yrs./cause: old age] (Note: The tombstone in the photo has the wrong date on it.)

NIC. LEY From Der Nord Westen, 02 Apr. 1896: On Mon. morning some children at play near the docks of the 8th St. bridge, saw a cord hanging from a nail into the water. The curious boys started to pull on the cord, and much to their horror, found a man’s hand and then the body of a man at the end of it. Obviously the police were called immediately and the body taken to land. It was determined to be the body Nicolaus Ley, an old and well-known resident of our city. The coroner’s inquiry was conducted with a verdict of suicide. What prompted him to take his own life is unknown. What is known is that about 4 weeks ago he had traveled to Chicago to undergo an operation that may have led ultimately to his decision. He went to Chicago again last week and returned here on Tues. about 10 a.m. That is the last time he was seen. Nicolaus Ley was born 25 Nov. 1831 in Bez. Trier, Prussia. He lived over 40 yrs. in our city where he ran a wagon and blacksmith shop. His funeral took place Tuesday.

He was born 17 Dec. 1809 in Germany and lived the 40 years before his death here, where he served the city for many years as cemetery attendant. His wife preceded him in death 14 years ago. He leaves 4 children of whom 3 live in Antigo and one lives locally. The burial took place Sun. at the city cemetery.
