CARL KRACHT From Der Nord Westen, 14 Mar. 1901: Death on Fri. of Carl Kracht, a well-known local resident, in the residence of his son-in-law Mathias Christiansen here following a 2-yr. illness. Mr. Kracht was born in Belitz, Mecklenburg-Schwerin on 09 Jan 1826. He came to No. America in 1852 and lived in Canada for 4 yrs. He came to Manitowoc in 1856 where he lived ever since. He operated a nursery here until2 yrs. ago when his wife died, at which time he gave up the nursery and went to live with a daughter. His funeral was held Sun. with a large number of vehicles in the funeral procession.
MINNA KRACHT From Der Nord Westen, 16 Feb. 1899: Death Mon. afternoon of 85-yr. old Mrs. Charles Kracht. She became ill with the grippe only a day earlier but because of the her weakened condition and advanced age it caused her death. She was born 10 June 1814 in Hanover and in 1852 married Charles Kracht, her surviving husband with whom she went to Canada. Later the pair came here and have lived near the Manitowoc city limits where Mr. Kracht worked as a gardener. In addition to her husband she is survived by one daughter, Mrs. M. Christiansen. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon with a large number of people in attendance.
GENA S. KRAEMER Mrs. Louis M. Kraemer, 85, of Park Lawn Home, Manitowoc, died Tuesday morning at the home. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Edmund Olson will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mrs. Kraemer, nee Jena Peterson, was born Feb. 25, 1887, in the Town of Carlton, Kewaunee County, daughter of the late Peter and Bertha Olson Peterson. She was married to Louis M. Kraemer Dec. 21, 1912, at Manitowoc. The couple always resided at Manitowoc. Her husband preceded her in death Dec. 3, 1954. She was a member of A.L.C.W. of St. Paul Lutheran Church. Survivors include two sons, John, of Manitowoc and William, of Allouez; three daughters, Mrs. Karl (Margaret) Wage and Mrs. William (Bernyce) Zimmermann, of Manitowoc and Mrs. Kenneth (Marion) Neubauer, of Decator, Ga.; 13 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren. A brother and two sisters preceded her in death. EMILIA KRAFENSTEIN Mrs. Amelia Kraffenstein, wife of Charles Kraffenstein, 1020 Buffalo street, died last evening following a short illness. Death was due to flu-pnemonia. Deceased was born in Russia and the family came to this country to live only a few years ago. She was 32 years of age and besides the husband five children survive to mourn their mother's death. One of the children remained in Russia with relatives when the family removed to this country. The funeral will be at the late home and services will be by Rev. Karl Machmiller. GUST C. KRAHN From Der Nord Westen, 02 July 1908: (From the correspondent in Two Rivers, 29 June) Local barber Gustav Krahn died suddenly of a heart attack Sunday morning between 5 and 7 a.m. The exact time of his death cannot be given because he was home alone while his wife was on a visit to Manitowoc. He had already arisen and had his breakfast when the attack hit. When he was found his coffee was still warm. He had planned a trip to English Lake for Sunday and on the return trip pick up his wife in Manitowoc… A doctor was called but could only confirm that Mr. Krahn was dead from a heart attack. He was 32 years of age and is survived by his widow and an 8-year old daughter. He was widely known and respected here. He operated a thriving barber shop near Waverly House.
HERMAN KRAHN From Der Nord Westen, 16 Mar. 1899: Fri. night HERMAN KRAHN, a young man from Kaukauna who formerly resided here, was killed by being run over by a freight train near Marshfield. He was a brakeman on the train and was missing when it arrived in Marshfield. The search found his mangled body on the tracks and it is surmised that he slipped and fell under the wheels. He was buried Mon. in Manitowoc.
WILLIAM KRAHN, SR. From Der Nord Westen, 24 June 1909: Wilhelm Krahn, who has been a resident of our city for 42 years, died Sunday at age 57. The deceased formerly worked in the factory of Smalley Manufacturing Co. until illness forced him to give up his work. He leaves a widow, 3 daughters, a son, his elderly mother and several sisters. VLASTA KRAINIK DEATH COMES AS MERCIFUL DELIVERANCE Years of suffering ended today for Miss Vlasta Krainik, 66, who passed away at Maple Crest sanitarium where she had been a patient for a year and a half. Afflicted twenty years ago Miss Krainik's malady developed into an incurable one and during the past several years she had experienced great suffering and death came as a merciful deliverance to her. Miss Krainik was born August 13, 1864, at Francis Creek and with her parents moved to this city when a young girl. Her parents were one of the pioneer settlers of the county. The deceased is survived by her aged mother Mrs. Arnelia Krainik, three sisters, Mrs. Ed. Steidl, Lincoln, Neb., Mrs. J.T. Webster, Chicago; Mrs. W.A. Blumenthal, this city, and a brother, Fred Krainik of Oakland, Calif. WENZEL KRAINIK From the Manitowoc Pilot, Thursday June 8, 1899: Wenzel Krainik of this city, died at St. Mary's Hospital, Oshkosh, on Saturday last. He had undergone an operation for appendicitis twelve days before. The operation seemed to be successful and the wound had healed. But a few days before his death his stomach would not retain food. His wife and two of his children were present at his bedside when he breathed his last. His remains were brought here for interment. The funeral took plac on Monday and was conducted by the Society C.S.P.S. of which he was a member. He was born at Melnik, Bohemia, September 28, 1846, and when 10 years old came to this country, landing at New Orleans. The family came north and settled in Kossuth in 1856. In 1867 he was married to Annie Svoboda, and in 1870 spent a few months clerking in Chicago. He returned to Kossuth and resumed farm work. He served for some time on the board of supervisors. Twenty-six years ago he moved to Manitowoc and went into the hotel business with his father-in-law, soon after assuming entire control himself. Twelve years ago he built a store and engaged in the mercantile business though he left the management of the store to his children. He was elected to the city council three times and was a member of the county board one year. He leaves a wife and 11 children, 6 girls and 5 boys. They are Mrs. Fanta, Mrs. Cermak, Misses Alvina, Bessie, Addie and Blanche and John, Frank, Anton, Emil and Charles. Mr. Krainik was a public spirited citizen and a man of considerable enterprise. ANNA KRAJNIK DEATH TAKES MRS. KRAINIK, OLD RESIDENT Mrs. Anna Krainik, widow of Wenzel Krainik, died at the family home at 835 North Eight street at 10 o'clock last evening following an illness. Mrs. Krainik was born in Bohemia 70 years ago and came to America with her parents but when but two years of age. The family settled in Kossuth where they made their home for many years. She married there and 47 years ago came to Manitowoc with her husband to make her home and has since always lived here. For many years they conducted the store and hotel at the corner of North Tenth and Buffalo streets. Mr. Krainik, who during his life time was an active business man and greatly interested in politics, serving his ward as alderman for a number of terms and representing the ward also on the county board of supervisors, died some twenty years ago. For many years now, Mrs. Krainik has been making her home on North Eighth street with her son John and daughter Adelaide. Eleven children were born to the couple, nine of whom live to mourn their mother whose first interest was always her home and her children's welfare. They are John R., Anton E., Emil B., Charles W., Mrs. A.J. Chermak, Mrs. A.J. Fanta, Mrs. Henry W. Wilda and Miss Aedlaide, all of this city and Mrs. F.B. Wiesner, of St. Louis, Mo. WILLIAM KRAUSE From Der Nord Westen, 03 Mar. 1904: Death Mon. afternoon, after an illness of several weeks with a type of blood poisoning, of Wilhelm Krause, a teacher in the local Lutheran School. The deceased, who has been ill for a long time, felt well enough to serve as director of the Lutheran Church's recent orchestra concert. Next day he had to return to his sick room at the risk of losing his life. He was born 19 Mar. 1880 in Jackson, Wisconsin. He was trained as a teacher in the Seminary of the Lutheran Synod and accepted a position as teacher in the local Lutheran School in 1900. On 01 June last year he married Miss Bertha Schaefer, daughter of Mr. J.H. Schaefer here, his now surviving widow. He is also survived by his sorrowing parents, 6 brothers and 3 sisters. Mr. Kraynik was born Mar. 27, 1897, in Town of Franklin, Kewaunee County, son of the late Adolph and Ann Lefky Kraynik. He married Theresa Votava Nov. 25, 1924, at Milwaukee. The couple resided there for 45 years, where for 42 years he was a barber. His wife preceded him in death Dec. 18, 1965. Shortly after he moved to Denmark. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of All Saints Catholic Church. He served in the Army in World War I, and he was a veteran of World War I Brown County Barracks No. 1199. MARY KRAYNIK One by one the pioneers of Stangelville are passing away. The last one to answer the call was Mrs. Mary Kraynik (sic), who passed away Sunday morning, March 24. She was in poor health for some time. Her death was due to paralysis. Mrs. Krajnik was born in Bohemia and was about eighty years old. She settled on a farm with her husband in this town in the early fifties, when this country was a wilderness and had lived here ever since. She was well known and esteemed by all who knew her. She is survived by two sons, Adolph of this place and Joseph of Green Bay and one daughter, Mrs. W. Zimmerhakel of Mishicot. The funeral was held Wednesday morning from the Lutheran Church at Melnik. May her soul rest in peace. JOHN KRCMA John Krcma, 70, former county resident, who has been living a retired life at Walworth, Wis., for a number of years, died Monday night in a Janesville hospital. He formerly resided in Chicago, where he was engaged in the manufacturing business. Mr. Krcma was born on a farm at Gibson in 1873 and spent his early life on the farm. He moved to Chicago where he established himself in business. On retiring a few years ago he moved to Walworth. Survivors are his widow, Ellen, of Walworth; sister, Mrs. Mary Stangel of this city; four brothers, Wenzel and Charles of Gibson, Joseph of Chicago, Anton of this city. The body will be brought to Manitowoc for burial. LELAND KREIMANN Leland Kreimann, 77, of 4412 N. Campbell St., Chicago, Ill., died Thursday at Rosewood Manor Nursing Home, Chicago. Mr. Kreimann was born Sept. 12, 1893, in the Town of Schleswig, Manitowoc County, son of the late Edward and Emma Scheling Kreimann. He attended schools in the Town of Schleswig and at Kiel. Following his schooling, he owned and leased various gas stations in the Manitowoc area until 1942. He married Clara Krueger June 18, 1919, in the Town of Eaton. He later was employed at Manitowoc Shipbuilding Inc. until 1952 when the couple moved to Chicago. His wife preceded him in death in 1960. He then married Mrs. Mildred Bextel May 26, 1962, at Chicago. Mr. Kreimann was a member of the Bowmanville Baptist Church, Chicago, of which he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher for many years. Survivors include his wife; a son, the Rev. JANE KRESS Mrs. H. G. Kress, Manitowoc Editor's Widow, 81, Dies Manitowoc, Wis., May 10 [Special]. -Mrs. Jennie Kress, 81 years old, died today. Her husband, the late H. G. Kress, was a newspaper publisher and served many years as postmaster under Republican administrations. She was the daughter of Attorney George Reed, promoter and later president of the old Wisconsin Central railroad. Mr. Kress established the weekly Lakeshore Times. the only Republican paper north of Milwaukee at that time. Mrs. Kress is survived by two daughters, Mrs. H. R. Peege, Milwaukee, and Mrs. H. R. ANNA KRETCHE From Der Nord Westen, 01 Feb. 1906: Following a one year illness Mrs. Anna Kretsche here died Tuesday at age 72. Mrs. Kretsche had come here from her Bohemian home in 1880, and her husband preceded her in death 13 years ago. She is survived by 4 sons and a daughter. (Note from cem. office: The Burial Register has Anna Kretche, born in Bohemia. She is buried next to Paul Krejci, born in Bohemia, on a lot purchased by Paul Krecjie (according to lot book) or Krejcie (in computer program). Also on the lot is a Helen Urbanek, whose parents were John & Anna (nee Princl) Kratche. We don't have a John & Anna Kratche but we do have John & Anna Kretche on a lot purchased by John Krejchie (according to lot book) or Kretche (in computer program). I don't have any Kretsche burials, but I do have people with the last name Kretsch.(That's about 7 versions of the name.)

EDWIN V. KRISH Edwin V. Krish, 75, of 1036 N. 14th St., Manitowoc, died Wednesday at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Mr. Kirsh was born Nov. 20, 1896, at Cooperstown, Wis., son of the late Wencel and Mary Marshek Krish. He married Tillie Sladkey June 5, 1923, at St. Wenceslaus Catholic Church, Green Street. He was employed at Robert Eisner Contractors for 40 years, retiring in 1962. He was veteran of World War I, serving in Company E., 314 Division, from Aug. 8, 1918 to June 5, 1919. He also served overseas in Germany. He was a member of American Legion Drews- Bleser Post No. 88 and Holy Name Society of Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Survivors include his wife, two sons, a daughter, two brothers, Wencel, of Manitowoc, and Edward, of Maribel; and nine grandchildren. Two sisters preceded him in death. JOSEPH R. KRISH Joseph R. Krish, 81, of Rt. 4, Manitowoc, died late Sunday evening at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Mr. Krish was born July 23, 1892, in the Town of Cooperstown, Manitowoc County, son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth Holly Krish. He married Victoria Meyer Oct. 18, 1913, in Manitowoc County. He was a carpenter all his life. In 1945, they moved to Denmark, where he was the owner of the Uptown Bar, moving back to Manitowoc in 1949. His wife preceded him in death Dec. 28, 1967. Survivors include five sisters, Mrs. Blanche Krejcie and Mrs. Edward (Elizabeth) Bohacek, of Manitowoc, Mrs. Lillian Arndt, of Hartland, Wis., Mrs. Anna Decker of Norway, Mich., and Mrs. Arthur (Victoria) Hansen, of Denmark; and three brothers and sisters-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Charles T. Mrs. Krizan, nee Yarmilla Dushek, was born Sept. 17, 1904, in the Town of Gibson, Manitowoc County, daughter of the late Miloslv and Carrie Schenian Dushek. She was married to Eugene Price in 1936. He died in 1944. In 1947, she was married to Alexander Krizan. He preceded her in death in 1954. Mrs. Krizan was graduated from the old Washington High School in 1911 and in 1924 from Manitowoc Business College. She was employed at Johnson Electric Co. and Mirro Aluminum Co. JOSEPH G. KRIZEK Joseph Krizek Sr., 81, of 908 Chicago St., Manitowoc, died Saturday evening at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. CONRAD KRUCK Conrad E. Kruck, 70, (photo) of 1209 New York avenue, who retired a year ago last February after being employed for 39 years at the Manitowoc Ship Building company, died in his sleep early today at his home. Mr. Kruck suffered a stroke some time ago but was able to be about. He was out of the yard at his home Monday. Funeral plans are incomplete, awaiting word from a son, Edward, in Canada. Mr. Kruck was born in this city in 1875 and in 1894 married Miss Henrietta Balk, in New Orleans. They made their home in that city for 10 years Mr. Kruck being employed in railroad work there. Then they came to Manitowoc, and Mr. Kruck took employment at the ship yards. He retired in February, 1944. Survivors are his wife; five sons, Roy and Ernie of this city, Clifton of Fond du Lac, Edward of Toronto, Canada, Raymond with a medical unit of the U.S. army in France; brother Ernest of Fond du Lac; sister, Mrs. Bertha Wood of Prospect Park, Pa.; and five grandsons. FRANCES BYRNS (RITCHIE) KRUCK Frances Byrns (Ritchie) Kruck, age 97, of 407 Park St., Manitowoc, died Thursday, July 13, 2006, at Rivers Bend Health and Rehabilitation Center, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, July 17, 2006, at the First Presbyterian Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Dr. Matthew L. Sauer will officiate with burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Frances was born July 21, 1908, in Manitowoc, daughter of the late Robert A. and Daisy Bailey Ritchie. She was educated in the Manitowoc Public Schools and was a 1926 graduate of Lincoln High School. She received her Bachelors of Education degree from the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse in 1930. She attended the University of Iowa and received her masters degree from New York University in 1940. Frances taught physical education in the Baraboo Public Schools and at Woodrow Wilson Jr. High School and Manitowoc Lincoln High School for 40 years, retiring in 1970 as a counselor and dean of girls at Lincoln High School. She married Raymond M. Kruck on Aug. 15, 1982, at First Presbyterian Church in Manitowoc. He preceded her in death on March 3, 1995. Frances has been a member of First Presbyterian Church since March 24, 1921. She served on the Board of Deacons and Member the Sessions of the church and the Crafty Ladies of First Presbyterian Church. She was a member of Delta Psi Kappa (National Honorary Professional Physical Education Sorority), Kappa Delta Pi (Honorary Scholastic Fraternity), former member of Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, former member of the Eastern Star, Elks Ladies past presidents, volunteer at Park Lawn Home, president of the Manitowoc County Retired Teachers Association, Wisconsin Education Association, Wisconsin Retired Teachers Association, Alumni Association of the University of Wisconsin-LaCrosse, National Retired Teachers Association, Northeastern Wisconsin Education Association, Manitowoc County Historical Society, Wisconsin Maritime Museum, Woodland Dunes and the Shrine Auxiliary. She is survived by two nieces and two nephews; 12 grandnieces and grandnephews; 12 great-grandnieces and great-grandnephews; her caregivers; and her good friends. She was the widow of John Krueger who died 5 yrs. ago. The deceased, nee Goldenbergen, was born in Mecklenburg in 1825. In 1863 she came from Germany to Manitowoc with her husband and has lived here ever since. They were living on South Main St. when her husband died, so she moved in with her daughter. Mrs. Krueger leaves 2 children, Mr. Henry Krueger who lives in North Hudson, Wisconsin., and the above mentioned Mrs. Strodthoff, as well as several grandchildren. DEAN W. KRUEGER Military funeral services for Lt. Dean Wilbur Krueger, 25, of Rt. 2, Reedsville, who died March 26 in Southeast Asia while piloting an A-37 aircraft on a strike mission, will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Gervase J. Zanotti will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mr. Krueger was born Oct. 13, 1945, at Manitowoc, son of Wilber L. and Edith Grace Goldie Krueger. He was graduated in 1963 from Valders High School and in 1967 from Wisconsin State University-Platteville with high honors. In May of 1968 he enlisted in the United States Air Force and took basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, San Antonio, Texas. He volunteered as an experimental subject in the field of Aerospace Medicine in a 13 weeks program. He was a distinguished graduate of Lackland on March 31, 1969. On April 11, 1970, he received his wings with honors at Laughlin Air Force Base, Del Rio, Texas. He was commissioned a first lieutenant Sept. 1, 1970, at England Air Force Base, Alexandria, La. He went to Vietnam Jan. 18, 1971. Mr. Krueger was a member of the Cato Future Farmers 4-H Club, the Valders FFA and First Presybterian Church, Manitowoc. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) JOHN KRUEGER From Der Nord Westen, 15 Feb. 1900: Death Sun. midday of John Krueger, an old and eminent resident of our city. He was born 08 Aug. 1818 in Mecklenburg-Schwerin and came with his wife to Manitowoc in 1864, acquiring the house in which he just died. The old gentleman had not been feeling well for several days, but no one believed that the end was so near. A heart attack brought his life to an end. His aged widow and two children - Mrs. Hermann Strodthof here, and Henry Krueger in North Hudson - mourn his death. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon in a long funeral procession from the Lutheran Church.

WILLIAM KRULL WM. KRULL DIES ON EVE OF HIS 58TH BIRTHDAY William Krull died at the home of his sister, Mrs. Charles Haase, 1314 South Ninth street, this morning. Had he lived until tomorrow, that being his birthday, he would have reached the age of fifty-eight years. He was born in Germany, September 9, 1863, and came to this country and city with his parents, when but eight years of age. He had been confined to his bed, for only a week, but has never enjoyed vigorous health, having suffered from partial paralysis since his early childhood. The funeral will be held Sunday afternoon from the house with interment at Evergreen, Rev. Machmiller conducting the services. For many years he assisted his father at Evergreen cemetery, but since the death of his father eight years ago has been employed in the orchards of Ben. Nienaber. She came to Manitowoc as a girl with her parents where she was graduated from Manitowoc Business College before going to Milwaukee to be employed for a number of years at Johns-Manville Co. She was married at Milwaukee April 10, 1915, to John Krumdick. The couple returned to Manitowoc where Mrs. Krumdick was employed as an office worker and nurse at Shady Lane Home. Mrs. Krumdick was a member of Senior Citizens Club, Manitowoc Vocational Homemakers and First Presbyterian Church. Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. Edwin Gadzinski of Manitowoc; a son, Jack of Athol, Mass.; three sisters, Mrs. Walter Wegner and Mrs. Frank Richey of Port Clinton, Ohio and Mrs. H. Neubert of Oconomowoc; two brothers, Howard of Watertown and Henry; and five grandchildren. A brother, Elmer, a sister, Mrs. William Fricke, preceded her in death. CHARLES KRUMM From Der Nord Westen, 19 Jan. 1899: On Tues. afternoon Chas. Krumm, the well-known wagoner, took a piano to Kellnersville. He spent some time there and started home about 6:30. Shortly afterward his horse and wagon were going along in Francis Creek but the driver was missing. Mr. Krumm was then found lying dead in the street with a fractured skull. Nobody knows what sort of accident took place and probably never will know. For whatever reason he had fallen from the wagon and hit his head on a rock. He leaves a widow and 3 grown children as well as a wide range of acquaintances. The funeral will take place Fri. afternoon at the city cemetery. ******* [cause: accident]

JOSEPHINE E. KRUMM Mrs. Charles Krumm, died Wednesday morning at Park Lawn Home, Manitowoc. She had resided at Shady Lane from 1961 until 1968 when she moved to Park Lawn where she had presently resided. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Jens Funeral Home, Manitowoc. The Rev. Theodore Vinger will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mrs. Krumm, nee Josephine Johnson, was born Nov. 2, 1879, at Branch, daughter of the late Anton and Josephine Johnson Johnson. She attended Manitowoc schools and was graduated from the old North Side High School in 1897. She was registar in probate for 14 years with the late Judge John Chloupek. She was married to Charles Krumm April 12, 1917. They made their home in Manitowoc, where she had resided all her life. She was a member of First Lutheran Church and the Women's Guild and Circle. Her husband preceded her in death in 1955. Survivors include a son, Charles J., of Ithaca, N.Y., and four grandchildren. Two sisters and four brothers preceded her in death, and a grandaughter, Judith, died in January, 1970. Friends may call at the funeral home after 10 a.m. Friday until time of services. EMIL [EMIL] KRUMHEUER From the Manitowoc Pilot, January 25, 1894 Emil Krummheuer if this city died on Monday evening of this week Early Monday afternoon he had an attack similar to that he had a few weeks ago. He was taken to his home and remained conscious the whole time. The attacks were more persistent than those during his former sickness though no more severe. But they soon reached the respiratory muscles and ended his life. The physicians say it resembled tetanus, though there was no apparent cause for the manifestation of such a disease. Mr. Krummheuer has for many years been a resident of the city and was engaged in the boot and shoe business. He was born in Schlavin-Pummer, and came to this country 30 years ago. He was 52 years old at the time of his death. Mr. Krummheuer was a man of genial disposition and enjoyed the respect of all who knew him. He leaves a wife and one daughter, Mrs. Ed. Mohr of Chicago. The funeral takes place today. ******* From Der Nord Westen, 25 Jan. 1894: Emil Krumheuer, a well-known merchant in our city, suffered a fatal stroke on Mon. Mr. Krumheuer was born 28 Nov. 1841 in Labes, Pomerania and reached the age of 52 yrs. 2 mos. After early schooling he joined the army, rising to the rank of Assistant Paymaster. After wearing the king’s uniform for 3 yrs. 2 mos. he left the service and came to America in 1869, directly to Manitowoc. He worked here in a number of different mercantile ventures and developed a large body of friends. He married in 1871 to Mrs. Kembel and shortly afterwards established a retail store. He then gave up that enterprise to establish a shoe store which he pursued until his death. He suffered a stroke on 01 Dec. of last year, from which he never fully recovered. He suffered a second stroke Mon. afternoon and though several doctors were called, he died at 5 p.m. He is survived by his widow, a daughter and a stepson. The funeral will take place this afternoon.
KURT J. KRUPKAT Kurt J. Krupkat of 617 N. Sixth St., Manitowoc, died Thursday morning at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be conducted by the First Church of Christ, Scientists, 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Jens Funeral Home, Manitowoc. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitwooc. Mr. Krupkat was born in Bellingham, Wash., son of the late John and Rachel Wiese Krupkat. He attended schools in Bellingham and came to Wisconsin 1918. He married Minnie Bingham March 3, 1918, at Lansing, Mich., and came to Manitowoc to reside in 1929. The couple celebrated its golden wedding anniversary in 1968. In 1932, Mr. Krupkat started the Krupkat Heating Co. and operated it until his son, Dean, took over the business. He then served as office manager. Survivors include his wife, two sons, Donald of South Milwakee and Dean of Manitowoc, a daughter, Mrs. Eugene (Kathleen) Spacek of Manitowoc and five grandchildren. JACOB W. KUBICHKA Jacob W. Kubichka, 75, of 1224 N. 18th St., Manitowoc, died Sunday morning at Memorial Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be conducted at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home, Manitowoc, by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 659 in conjunction with the World War I Barracks. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mr. Kubichka was born July 20, 1895, at Podoli, Czechoslovakia, son of the late Matt and Marie Soukup Kubichka. He came to the United States with his parents at the age of eight. He was a veteran of World War I, serving overseas. He married Anna Fidler Feb. 3, 1920, at Manitowoc. The couple located in North Dakota until 1925 when they returned to Manitowoc. Mr. Kubichka was a member of the W.W.I. Barracks, the V.F.W., American Legion, Eagles Club, ZCBJ Lodge and the Boilermakeers Local No. 443. He had been employed at Manitowoc Shipbuilding Inc., until his retirement in 1960. His wife preceded him in death in 1966. Survivors include a son, four brothers, Louis of Cooperstown, Anton of Taus, Charles of Tacoma, Wash., and Frank of Shoto; 10 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. ALICE G. KUBSH Alice G. Kubsh, age 84, a resident of St. Mary's Home, Manitowoc, died Friday, July 21, 2006, at Bellin Hospital, Green Bay. She was born June 22, 1922, in Manitowoc, daughter of the late Michael C. and Malvina (Finch) Kubsh. Alice was a graduate of Denmark High School. She was an admission clerk and medical transcriptionist for Holy Family Hospital, retiring on January 1, 1988. Alice volunteered at Holy Family Hospital after her retirement. She was a member of the Daughters of Isabella, a former member of St. Paul Catholic Church and a current member of St. Francis of Assisi. EMIL G. KUCHENBECKER Herald Times Reporter, Manitowoc, Wisconsin, Sunday, December 28, 2003 Emil G. Kuchenbecker, age 90, of 1320 N. Ninth St., Manitowoc, died Thursday, Dec. 25, 2003. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 29, 2003, at First Presbyterian Church, 502 N. Eighth St., Manitowoc. The Rev. Christopher Schwab will officiate with burial at Evergreen Cemetery. Emil was born Sept. 2, 1913 at Westboro, Wis., son of the late Charles and Hattie Basken Kuchenbecker. He moved to Manitowoc at age 6 where he was educated and graduated from Lincoln High School with the class of 1931. On Aug. 6, 1935, he married Ruth A. Nickels at Melnik Presbyterian Church. Emil owned and operated Kuchenbecker’s Grocery Store at 913 Chicago St., which had previously belonged to his father. After leaving the grocery business, he was employed at the hardware department of Sears, Roebuck & Co. until his retirement in 1974. He was an avid gardener, enjoyed fishing and playing sheepshead with his sons and grandchildren. Survivors include his wife, a daughter, two sons, grandchildren, brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law. Cousins and friends also survive. He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law: Catherine Kuchenbecker and brothers-in-law and sisters- in-law. HENRY KUECKER From Der Nord Westen, 25 May 1893: Death on Sun. afternoon of Heinrich Kuecke(sic) of kidney disease. He passed away in the home of his son-in-law Mr. Albert Krueger in Gibson. The deceased was one of the earliest settlers in Manitowoc County and has been here for 35 yrs. He comes from the Prussian Province of Pomerania and reached an age of 74 yrs. He is survived by his 71 yr. old widow and 7 grown children, most of them married.

OTTILIE KUEHNE From Der Nord Westen, 21 Sept. 1885: Death of Mrs. Tilka (sic) Kuehne, daughter of the late Mr. August Teitgen in Town Rapids. Mrs. Kuehne was landlady of the Kuehne Hotel. During her last 20 days she was sick with typhus. She leaves a grief-stricken husband and four children, the eldest of which is 17 years. She was 36 years old. JOHANNA KUESTER From Der Nord Westen, 22 Apr. 1909: Death Monday morning, after a short illness, of 72-year old Mrs. Johanna Kuester in the home of her granddaughter, Mrs. Ben Hanson. The deceased came here from Germany in her youth and spent the greater part of her life in Manitowoc County. She was well-known in this city and its surroundings because she owned the hotel at Brauns Corners, which will now be run by her son George Braun. The deceased, who was twice married, is survived 7 children and several sisters, as well as a large number of grandchildren. The funeral was yesterday afternoon.
EMILY KUGLE Mrs. Emily Kugle, 77, of Reedsville, died Monday morning at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Reedsville Funeral Home. The Rev. Her husband preceded her in death in 1937. She was postmistress at Reedsville for 17 years. Mr. Kuhl was born Oct. 7, 1894, at Manitowoc, son of the late Nicholas and Margaret Haggerty Kuhl. He graduated from West High School, Manitowoc, in 1914. He worked for his father in the Kuhl Shoe Store on Quay Street and in 1931 opened his own shoe store at 314 N. Eighth St. He married Alma Lohse May 28, 1918, at Manitowoc. Mr. Kuhl was a member of the United Commercial Travelers. Survivors include his wife, two sons, Charles Jr., of Manitowoc and William of Niles, Ohio, a daughter, Miss Elaine, of Manitowoc, a brother, Carter, of Manitowoc and 10 grandchildren. The firemen and sons of Hermann came out in full force; fifty carriages of all kinds, followed in procession. The music on going out, was very solemn and impressive, but it was painful to hear it on its return, playing the most lively tunes. There may be some excuse for the practice, but we think it abominable.
ANNA KULNICK MRS. KULNICK, WHO CAME HERE IN '55, PASSES Widow of John Kulnick, Mother of Ten Children, Dies Sunday At The Hospital Mrs. Anna Kulnick, 88, widow of the late John Kulnick Sr, and a resident of the county for seventy-five years, passed away Sunday morning at the hospital here. Although not in the best of health for the past year, Mrs. Kulnick was able to be up and about the home of her son John, 1125 South Fourteenth St., with whom she made her home since the death of her husband, until about a week ago. She was removed to the hospital last week. Otto Kulnick, a son, with his family arrived here yesterday from Port Washington to spend Easter and found his mother near death at the hospital, the end coming at 11 o'clock. He will remain over for the funeral tomorrow. Came Here 80 years Ago Mrs. Kulnick, whose maden name was Anna Steiner, was born in Germany December 31, 1843 and came to this country with her parents when a girl of twelve years. The family settled at Clarks Mills. She was married there 65 years ago to John Kulnick Sr. and they located on a farm in the town of Manitowoc Rapids, where they continued to reside, until the death of Mr. Kulnick, 20 years ago. Ten children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Kulnick, all of whom survive. They are; Mrs. Robert Lill, Mrs. Carl Hartwig, Mrs. Albert Schroeder and Mrs. George Kellner, all of this city, and Mrs. Edward Hartman of Portland, Ore., Charley and James of Berlin, Wis., John of this city, Otto of Port Washington and Walter on the homestead farm in Rapids. There are also twelve grandchildren. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday afternoon at two o'clock from the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home in charge of the Rev. Blaufuss of the St. John's Evangelical church. Interment will be at Evergreen. ADOLPH KUMMER Manitowoc Citizen, Thur 3 March 1904: Adolph Kummer an aged resident of Manitowoc and a veteran of the Civil War died yesterday at the Holy Family Hospital after a lingering illness of disease incident to old age. Deceased was 76 years, his home being Manitowoc Rapids. A wife, two sons and three daughters survive. The deceased was a member of the 17th Regiment, Wisconsin Volunteers,during the war of the rebellion. The funeral will take place Sunday Afternoon at 2 o'clock from the undertaking parlors of M. The deceased, who was 76, came from Germany to Wisconsin shortly before the outbreak of the Civil War and served with the 17th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. At the close of the war he settled in Manitowoc Rapids where he has lived ever since. He leaves a widow, 2 sons and 3 daughters. MINNIE KUNISH Funeral services for Mrs. Frank Kunish, 86, formerly of 806 Columbus St., Manitowoc, who died Tuesday morning at Manitowoc County Hospital, will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home, Manitowoc. Mrs. Kunish, nee Minnie Ristow, was born Feb. 22, 1883, in Stettin, Germany, daughter of the late Frederick and Augusta Ristow. She came to this country in 1886. She was married to Frank Kunish in 1906 at Manitowoc, where the couple resided. Mr. Kunish was a former tailor. He preceded her in death Oct. 9, 1954. Survivors include a son, Col. Lester, of Manitowoc; a daughter, Mrs. Evelyn Marquardt, of Manitowoc; four grandchildren and two great grandchildren. Two brothers and four sisters preceded her in death. ERWIN C. KUNZ Erwin C. Kunz, 72, of 918 N. 12th St., Manitowoc, died Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Hospital, Manitowoc, where he had become a patient the day before. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Mittnacht Funeral Home, Manitowoc. The Rev. Vernon Anderson, pastor of First Lutheran Curch will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. Mr. Kunz was born at Manitowoc, son of the late Louis and Mary Kunz, Feb. 3, 1888. He was graduated from First Ward High School and attended Manitowoc Business College. He had been associated for many years with Kunz and Bleser Brewery and had been a director 10 years of Kingsbury Breweries, resigning a number of years ago. During World War II he had been employed by Manitowoc Shipbuilding Inc. He was a member of Elks Lodge 687 and Branch River Country Club. MARY KUNZ (d. 1925) MRS. L. KUNZ SUMMONED BY DEATH TODAY Funeral Services Will Be Held from Home Thursday Mrs. Mary Kunz, wife of Louis Kunz, 815 Marshall street, died at the Holy Family hospital at 1:4? this morning following an illness of several months. She was removed to the hospital about a month ago and underwent an operation for eye trouble. Death was due to a complication of diseases incident to old age. The funeral will be held from the family home at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon and burial will be at Evergreen cemetery. Mrs. Kunz was born at Cleveland, Ohio, March 26, 1856 and would have been sixty-nine at her next birthday. Strangely enough her family name before marriage was also Kunz and with her parents she came to Manitowoc as a child, receiving her education in the public schools here. She was married to Louis Kunz in this city November 28, 1876 and the family has since made its home here. Besides the husband she is survived by three children, George and Erwin Kunz of this city and Mrs. J.V. Aldrer of Wilmette, Ill. One sister, Mrs. O.B. Sonsthagen and five grandchildren also survive her. Mrs. Kunz was essentially a home body, devoting her time to her home and her family but her pleasant manner and kindly disposition won for her a wide circle of friends to whom news of the death will come as a shock and with a distinct sense of a personal loss. CARL KURTH From Der Nord Westen, 24 June 1886: Death of 78-year old Carl Kurth on Tues., 22 June in his residence in the 3rd Ward of Manitowoc. He was born in Stettin, Pommerania and came to Manitowoc in 1869. He leaves a wife and three grown children – two sons and a daughter, the latter of whom is married to Capt. Pruess, as well as a number of grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. The burial will take place today at 2pm.

Kurth, a resident on the corner of 12th and Hamilton Sts., and had suffered a nerve illness several years ago which required his placement in the facility. She had been ill for two weeks. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at Mittnacht Funeral Home and at 10:00 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church, Maintowoc. The Very Rev. Clement P Kern will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The former Edna Mittnacht was born Aug. 19, 1893, at Manitowoc, Daughter of the late Peter and Anna Coutley Mittnacht. She attended St. Boniface Parochial School and West Side High School, being graduated in 1910. She attended Manitowoc County Normal School and taught several years in Manitowoc County Rural schools. She was married to William C. Kurth April 5, 1915, and the couple observed their Golden anniversary of their wedding this year. Mrs. Kurth was a past president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Otto Oas Post Auxiliary and the Eigtht district VFW Auxiliary, a past oracle of the Royal Neighbors, a past president of the Christian Mothers Alter Society of St. Pauls Church, past president of Daughters of Isabella, and a member of Manitowoc Eagles Aerie Auxiliary. Survivors include her husband and (some still living so I did not include them) 3 daughters and 3 sons; a brother Vernon Mittnacht of Miami FL., 31 grandchilldren and 9 great grandchildren. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3:00 p.m. Sunday where the rosary will be recited at 7:00 p.m. by CMA and St. Paul parish members."

Landing at Milwaukee, the Mueller family made the trip to Manitowoc by Ox team, the journey required three days. Married to William Kurth in this city 62 years ago, she with her husband resided here continuously. A family of 8 daughters and one son was born to them. Survivors are the widower, a son, William Jr. of this city; eight daughters, Mrs H Heck, Mrs Martha Luessow, Mrs A.F. Hintz, and Mrs L.W. WILLIAM KURTH, SR. Manitowoc Herald Times. Wed. April 29 1936 DEATH CLAIMS W. KURTH, 85 HERE TUESDAY. Established First Manitowoc Drayline 60 years ago; Services to be Saturday. William Kurth Sr., 85, who established the frist dray line in Manitowoc 60 years ago, died late Tuesday afternoon at the home of his daughter and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. C.A. Carnot, 1225 S 14th St. He had been seriously ill for six weeks. In March 1932, Mr. and Mrs. Kurth observed the 60th anniversary of their marriage. Mrs. Kurth died in January 1935. Funeral services for Mr. Kurth will be held Saturday at 1:30 pm, from the Carnot home and at 2:00 from the First German Evangelical Lutheran church, of which Mr Kurth has been a member since locating in Manitowoc. Interment will be in Evergreen. Mr. Kurth was born in Maltzohn, Pommern, Germany, in 1851 and accompanied his parents to Manitowoc in 1869. After he finished school he embarked in the draying business. He continued this business for nearly 50 years and retired 15 years ago. He married Johanna Mueller in this city in 1872. Survivors are a son, William, city: seven daughters, Mrs A.N. Rhode, Mrs. O.R. Grainger, Mrs. C.A. Carnot,, all of this city; Mrs O. Beilka, Chicago, Mrs. H.C. Heck, Mrs M Luessow and Mrs A.F. JAMES W. KUTCHERA James W. Kutchera, 81, of 709 York St., Manitowoc, died Sunday at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Keith Haag will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Military graveside services will be conducted by the V.F.W. Otto Oas Post No. 659. Mr. Kutchera was born June 6, 1890, at Wausau, son of the late Joseph and Catherine Kashaka Kutchera. He came to Manitowoc in 1919. Prior to his retirement in 1952 he was employed by the City of Manitowoc Street Dept. for 32 years. He married Ella Winter in 1922. She preceded him in death in 1947. He then married Mrs. Clara Birkholtz in 1953. She preceded him in death in 1955. He was a World War I veteran serving in Germany and France. He was a member of the American Legion Drews Bleser Post No. 88, the V.F.W. Otto Oas Post 659, the 32 Degree Division, the War Veterans of Chicago, the World War I Barracks and the Senior Citizens of Manitowoc. Survivors include a son, Melvin, of Manitowoc, a brother, George, of Hoquiam, Wash., and two grandchildren. Six brothers and a sister preceded him in death. JOHN J. KUSTKA From Der Nord Westen, 07 Apr. 1904: John Kutska(sic), a resident of the 5th Ward, brought his life to an end Fri. evening by hanging himself in the cellar of his residence. He had come here from Bohemia several years ago and was a button maker by profession, but over the past few years has worked the glue boiler in the school furniture factory. He contracted consumption and had to give up his work several weeks ago because of increasing weakness. He and his wife and 4 small children were hard hit by these circumstances and led him to suicide. Fri. evening after the children had gone to bed, Mrs. Kutska remained up with her ill husband but finally went to bed on his promise he would soon follow. Instead he went to the cellar and hanged himself from a rafter. Mrs. Kutska awakened at 2 o'clock Sat. morning, realized her husband was not in bed and went looking for him. She lit the cellar and found her husband's body. Neighbors were notified, the body taken down and a doctor called, and it was established that life had gone. Justice of the Peace Falge held a coroner's inquest, and the jury returned a verdict of suicide. Kutska was about 43 yrs. old.
