FRED KREJCAREK FARMER FOUND DEAD IN BARN BY YOUNG SON Fred Krejcarek Was Worried Over Conditions Involving Newly-purchased Farm Depressed because the wet weather prevented the harvesting of his clover crop, Fred Krejcarek, 48, Polifka’s Corners, was found hanging in his barn this morning. Krejcarek was found by his 14-year-old son, Edward, at 5:30 this morning, an hour after he had gone into the barn to milk. No threat or indication of his action was given by Krejcarek, his family said today. He had been worried and depressed for some time, however, over financial conditions involving his farm, which he purchased two months ago from John Shanda, the family said. At 4:40 this morning Krejcarek went to the barnyard with his wife to milk the cows. While his wife went to the pasture to drive in the cattle Krejcarek, instead of going to the milk shed as usual, walked into the barn. Although his wife noticed that he walked past the shed contrary to his usual habits, she paid no attention to him. Edward, wondering at his father’s continued absence, went to the barn and found him hanging from a rafter. No Inquest Coroner Gerald Rau of Two Rivers pronounced the man a victim of suicide. No inquest will be held, Rau said. Fred Krejcarek was born in Cooperstown and always made his home in the county. He took up farming and operated farms in Franklin and Kossuth before taking over the present farm two months ago. Eighteen years ago he was married to Emily Havlichek. Survivors are his widow, a daughter Violet; three sons, Edward, Clarence and Lester; his mother, Mrs. Rosie Krejcarek; three brothers, Emil of Franklin, Joseph of Kossuth and Miles of this city; and three sisters, Mrs. John Wilhelm, Kenosha, Mrs. Joseph Holley, Bolt, and Mrs. William Grall, city. JOSEPH KREJCAREK KOSSUTH MAN AUTO MISHAP NECK BROKEN WHEN CAR GOES INTO DITCH Christmas Eve Tragedy Near Branch Claims J. Krejcarek Joseph Krejcarek Sr., 68, well known resident of the town of Kossuth, met death late Thursday afternoon when the automobile in which he was driving with his son Joseph Krejcarek Jr., left the road in making a turn of the highway, skidded and crashed through a fence and into the ditch. Mr. Krejcarek suffered a broken neck at the base of the skull and other injuries and died within a few minutes of the accident, being dead when Dr. V. Kellner, of Maribel, who was summoned reached the scene. The body was taken to the home. The car skidded and went into the ditch with fatal injury to the aged occupant. Joseph Krejcarek, Jr., the driver, escaped unhurt, suffering only a minor injury to the knee. Victim struck Top From the indications Krejcarek Sr., was thrown from his seat and struck his head against the top of the car, probably thrown back to have his neck strike the back of the seat which caused the fatal injury. He suffered an injury to the eye, which was badly discolored but in just what manner this was caused is unexplainable. The car was badly damaged and some trouble was experienced in removing the body of the unfortunate victim after the accident. HENRY G. KRESS KRESS BUYS INTEREST IN CANTON SCHOOL Former Postmaster to be Partner in Business College Henry G. Kress, former postmaster of the city who retired a few months ago after seventeen years in the position, has purchased a half interest in the Canton Busines (sic) College at Canton, Ill., and departed for that city today to assume charge of his interests in the school. Mr. Kress will spend the summer at Canton and will direct the business management of the college. Mrs. Kress will visit with ???? daughter at Milwaukee and will return here in three weeks. The family will not remove to Canton now. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Thursday, April 6, 1916 P.8 ******** KRESS LANDED IN CITY 50 YRS AGO ON THIS DATE Secretary of Chamber of Commerce Recalls His Arrival H.G. Kress, secretary of the Chamber of Commerce, former postmaster, had an anniversary today. It was just fifty years ago today that Mr. Kress landed in Manitowoc, a lad of eight years of age, orphaned and alone. He came to the city on the old steamer Seabird, later lost on the lake, and has resided here most of the time since. Mr. Kress is a native of Pennsylvania but previous to the time he came here was in St. Louis. He said today that he had witnessed some change but the last two years had brought the greatest evidence of progress. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Tuesday, Nov. 13, 1917, Page 5 ********* HENRY G. KRESS DIES SUDDENLY WELL KNOWN LOCAL MAN IS CALLED TO REST Expressed Wish That When He Died End Not Be Lingering "When my final summons comes, when my alloted time on this earth has come to a close I earnestly hope it will not be given me to linger long and that the manner of my leaving may be swift and peacefull." Such was the oft expressed wish of Henry G. Kress who last night in the home where he has lived during his entire residence in Manitowoc came to his end in the manner of his desire and without a moment's warning. He had been down in the city, walked home with a friend whom he bade good night in his usual cheerful manner, closed the door and in less than a half hour had passed away. Mr. Kress had been about as usual during the day and had made a trip down town in the morning, returning about noon. He took a walk during the afternoon and in the evening, as was his custom went to a movie and after- wards to the postoffice to mail some letters. Arriving home at about 9 o'clock he complained of difficulty in breathing and after going to the kitchen for a drink of water, returned to lie down on the couch. He complained of being chilly and Mrs. Kress prepared hot water bags for him and when it became apparent that his condition was serious, called a doctor. The doctor arrived within twenty minutes but the patient was beyond human aid. His lungs had filled and dilated the heart causing death within less than an hour of the time the attack occurred. The passing came without pain and was peaceful. His passing came as a severe shock to the family and friends. The arrangements for the funeral have not been completed but will be held from the home Monday, either morning or afternoon depending upon the arrival of members of the family who have been summoned. Burial will be at Evergreen. Eventful Career The passing of Mr. Kress marks the end of an unusually active career and the passing of a man who for many years has been identified with many public enterprises in this city. As postmaster, editor and publisher, Consul to Cork and prominent in all political activities of the Republican party, secretary of the chamber of commerce, he at all times was close to public affairs as any one other local individual. The Herald-News owes its inception to him since he was president of the company which in 1899 organized the Herald-Press Publishing company merging the old Manitowoc Times-Press and the Daily Herald. Interest in the company was sold to Horal Nelson in 1909. Biographical Sketch Henry G. Kres (sic) was born at Wellsboro, Tiogo county, Pennsylvania, on the 3d day of August 1858. His father, George Clinton Kress, was born at Smithboro, N.Y. His mother, whose maiden name was Elia Knapp, was born in the same town. Her father, Sylvester Knapp, was one of the well known physicians of southern New York and practiced his profession until nearly ninety years of age. The grandmother of Henry G. Kress was the daughter of Jonathan Fitch, the inventor of the first steamboat to run on American waters. The paternal ancestors of Mr. Kress settled in the sate of New York during the year 1740 and the Fitches and Knapps settled in Connecticut, during the year 1620. Both parents of Henry G. Kress died before he had reached the age of five years, his father in 1860 and his mother three years later. When eight years of age, Henry Kress was sent to the west to reside with relatives. He was first sent to Wabasha, Minnesota in 1868 where he remained only a few months, and then came to Manitowoc during the fall of that same year, arriving here on the Goodrich Steamer Sea Bird, which was burned early the next spring. He stayed at Manitowoc until the spring of 1870, when he returned to his former home at Wellsboro, Pennsylvania. He attended normal school at Mansfield, Pennsylvania, and during his vacations and for some time after leaving school, he worked for his brother in a foundry and machine shop. Securing a position at Pittsburg, he went to that city and while working, took a course at the Iron City Commercial College, and received a diploma from the institution. He came west again in 1880. For a time he kept books for the G. Menel Foundry Co. at Minneapolis, and afterwards was salesman for the Boynton Furnace Co. Married in 1882 In 1882 Mr. Kress was married to Jennie B. Reed of Manitowoc, Wisconsin, a daughter of the Hon. George Reed, the promoter and for years the president of the Wisconsin Central Railroad Company. Mr. Reed was the first lawyer to locate in Wisconsin, and for a long time was the confidential advisor to Solomon Juneau. Mr. Kress bought the Lake Shore Times, the only republican newspaper then published on the lake shore north of Milwaukee, and edited the paper until 1889. He was twice elected a delegate to the republican state convention and in 1886 and 1888 and was chosen by the state convention as a delegate to the national convention of 1888, and for the work done at that convention received the personal thanks of the nominee, General Harrison. He was a member of the Republican state central committee for 1888-89, chairman of the Manitowoc County commmittee for 1887 and 1888 and held the chairmanship of the Manitowoc city committee for years. During the year 1889 he moved to Spokane Falls, Washington, where he bought the National Iron Works which he managed until it was destroyed by fire in 1891. While a resident of that city he was elected delegate to the first reform city convention ever held there, was chosen chairman of the convention and was elected by the convention to act as chairman of the committee to conduct the campaign. The members of the reform ticket were elected by five hundred majority, the first time the democrats had been defeated there. On election day, Mr. Kress, as chairman, caused the arrest of ten men who had sold their votes, and these men were placed in jail, this probably being the first time men were ever jailed on the western coast for attempting illegal voting. In 1892 Mr. Kress was appointed United States consul at Cork (Queenstown) and while at that post he entertained a section of the first white squadron of our new navy, four ships, for two weeks. He was made a life member of the Royal Cork Yacht Club, the oldest club in the world and on leaving was presented by the city government of Cork, with an engraved silver card case. Starts Weekly in 1893 Mr. Kress returned to Manitowoc in 1893 and being urged to again publish a newspaper, the merchants guaranteeing a large amount of advertising as an inducement, he started the Times-Press. He was again chosen chairman of the republican couanty committee and of the city committee and conducted the campaign. For seven years he was president of the Advancement Association and was supported for congress by the Manitowoc county delegation in 1898, and received three additional appointments, covering a period of nearly eighteen years. He was appointed the first postal savings banker in the state of Wisconsin, and for six months conducted the only bank of its kind in the state. He was also the first custodian of a public building in Manitowoc city and county. Enjoyed Friendship of Many Mr. Kress has had the honor of the friendship of many of the public men of the country, and has been associated with some of them in political matters. He always took pride in being able to say truthfully that he never handled a political dollar, nor had he ever received a dollar for the political services of his papers. For several years he was president of the Herald Press Publishing Co. and was in full control of the policies of the Daily Herald and the weekly Times Press. The members of Mr. Kress's family are his widow, Mrs. Jennie B. Kress, two sons, Bancroft C. of St. Louis and Albert George Kress, Magnolia, Ark., and two daughters, Mrs. Harriet Owsley, St. Louis and Mrs. Helen Peege, Milwaukee. WILLIE KRETCHE Willie Krejci (sic), a little boy 9 years seven months old died on Friday last. The little fellow was in his father's store and began crying without apparent cause. When asked the trouble he said some boy pushed him at school and hurt him. Later he said he fell. There was a bruise on his side. He rapidly grew worse and soon became unconscious. An autopsy was held and it was found that the injury to his side was not serious. The brain was gorged with blood. Mr. Krejci has made inquiries regarding the pushing of the boy and learned that he was pushed down the steps by one of the pupils, a boy much larger than himself. Charles Krieg had a collision last week on the highway near Whitelaw. It wasn't the kind of collision that is so numerous in circuit court. The car bumped into a 270 pound black bear in the dark about 8:30 pm. It wasn't an escaped menagerie animal but a "sure nuff" wild bear of the kind whose porridge little Goldilocks ate all up. The impact badly dented a fender of the car and also badly dented Bruin somewhere as he proceeded to throw a swoon which made it comparatively easy for Mr. Krieg to snuff out the bear's lights with one shot of the gun which he carries in his car for use when he bumps into bears. Mr. Krieg has the carcass of the big brute hanging up in his meat market and asserts solemnly that the bear met his death in the manner related above. We can't take issue with him. CHARLES KRIESER DIED BY HIS OWN HAND Charles Krieser Plans Suicide and Dies in Presence of Wife and Children. CARBOLIC ACID ENDS LIFE. Mind Unbalanced by Worry, Step is Taken With Premeditated Design— Previous Attempt Made In the presence of his wife and three children at his home on South Eighteenth street, Friday night, Charles Krieser, foreman at the plant of the Manitowoc Malting Co., committed suicide by drinking the contents of a four ounce bottle of carbolic acid. Self-destruction was accomplished upon premeditated design and was due to an unbalanced mind from which the unfortunate man had suffered for some time, and which had led to previous attempts at suicide. Death resulted almost immediately and occurred shortly after 6 o’clock. For some weeks past Krieser has conducted himself in a manner to cause alarm and arouse the anxiety of friends and has given unmistakable evidence of weakened mentality. Worry over the illness of his wife, upon whom physicians had recommended an operation as the only means of giving relief from sufferings of disease, had worked upon his mind and undoubtedly led to the fatal determination to end his life. Friday physicians attending Mrs. Krieser decided upon an operation and it was announced to the husband that it would be performed Saturday. Shortly after he left the house and returned late in the afternoon dispatched one of the children to the Barnstein drug store for four ounces of carbolic acid. When the child returned with the purchase, and while waiting for the evening meal, Krieser placed the bottle to his lips and drained it of contents. After accomplishing his purpose he placed the bottle upon the table and then fell to the floor where he expired in great agony. Assistance was summoned from the neighborhood and a physician called but nothing could be done. Officers were notified and an inquest held, presided over by Justice Markham, in which a verdict of suicide was returned. That the fatal step was premeditated is evident from the preparations made by the unfortunate victim. During the afternoon he visited numerous friends and bade them goodby and also attended to business affairs, settling several claims at the stores and giving notice that his dealings there were closed forever. Although his actions were strange, no suspicion of his intention entered the minds of friends, as in previous occasions he made similar statements. Krieser was about 40 years of age and was well known throughout the city. He had been an employe at the Malting plant since its establishment and was an excellent workman whose services were valuable to the interests of the company. He was in former years a member of Co. H. Rankin guards, and was sergeant in the company and popular with his comrades. He was a man of honesty and integrity and although addicted to the liquor habit was not a hard drinker. Hereditary causes may have been responsible in part for the tragedy ending his existence, as other members of the family have suffered from mental diseases. A wife and three children are the survivors. Manitowoc Daily Herald, November 23, 1901 P. 1 ***** Suicide of Carl Krieser by ingesting carbolic acid. Krieser for some time foreman of the Manitowoc Malting company's plant committed suicide last Friday evening by taking a large dose of carbolic acid. Just what caused Mr. Krieser to commit the insane act is not known. He was in comfortable circumstances, having steady occupation and good wages. He was apparently in the best of spirits when he returned from work to his home on Friday. He paid his wife, who is an invalid, a visit, and then sent his young daughter out to purchase the poison. On receiving the deadly drug he gulped it down and sank into a chair, dying in a few moments. He was buried Saturday afternoon. Manitowoc Pilot, Wis., Thursday, November 28, 1901 pg. 1 ***** TAKES DOSE OF POISON Manitowoc Man Suicides While His Wife Lay Ill in Bed CHILDREN SEE HIM DIE Little Ones Play Until their Parent Falls Over on Floor Unconscious Manitowoc, Wis., Nov. 23 (Special) While his wife lay sick in bed and his three children played quietly together, Charles Kreiser(sic), foreman of the Manitowoc Malting Company, committed suicide by drinking carbolic acid. Krieser returned from work shortly after 5 o'clock yesterday afternoon. He took his little 5 year old daughter aside and sent her to a drug store to buy some carbolic acid. While she was gone he conversed with his wife, who has been sick in bed for many months. When the little girl returned with the poison which was soon to cause her father's death, Kreiser kissed her and then went out into the yard and drank the acid. He immediately returned to the house and walked into the room next to that which Mrs. Kreiser occupied and sat down on a chair without saying a word. The children went on playing and did not notice that their father was struggling and gasping for breath. Suddenly he fell unconscious to the floor. The little ones screamed and the mother cried out to know what had happened. The children were too frightened to tell her. She rushed from the bed into the room where her husband lay and then fainted away. One of the children ran to the neighbor for help and a doctor was called. The man died before the doctor arrived. Mrs. Krieser is in very serious condition and it is feared that the shock will make her recovery impossible. Krieser was 44 years of age and came to this city twenty years ago from Germany. He is survived by his wife and three children. Last summer he threatened to kill himself and paid all his bills and said good bye to many of his friends. At that time he was carefully watched until it was thought that he had entirely gotten over the suicide mania. He was very well known in this city, having served for many years as first sergent of Co. H.W.N.G.
