Trying to learn from what's behind you, never knowing what's in store makes each day a constant battle just to stay between the shore. But I will sail my vessel until the river runs dry. Like a bird upon the wind these waters are my sky. I'll never reach my destination, if I never try, so I will sail my vessel til the river runs dry. Too many times we stand aside, let the waters slip away, do we put off till tomorrow it has now become today. So don't you sit upon the shoreline and say your satisfied. Choose to chance the rapids, dare to dance that tide. I will sail my vessel until the river runs dry. Like a bird upon the wind these waters are my sky. I'll never reach my destination, if I never try, so I will sail my vessel til the river runs dry. There's bound to be rough waters and I know I'll take some falls. With the good Lord as my captain, I can make it through them all. I will sail my vessel until the river runs dry. Like a bird upon the wind these waters are my sky. I'll never reach my destination, if I never try, so I will sail my vessel til the river runs dry. Lord, I will sail my vessel until the river runs dry. HAROLD KOEBKE After an illness of only one day, Harold Koebke, the 8-yr. old son of Arthur Koebke, has died of spinal diphtheria. The disease resisted all medical help as death occurred after only a day of bed confinement. Arthur Koebke, the child's father who is a well-known traveling representative for the firm of F. Sirta & Sons here, was away on a trip when his son, whom he had last seen in good health, fell sick and died. The body was taken to a vault at the cemetery and buried Fri. morning. JOHN KOEBKE (d. 1912) JOHN KOEBKE, VETERAN DRAYMAN, CALLED BY EATH, AGE 7? YEARS Predicted Own Death When Forced to Give Up His Business By Ill Health— Was Resident Here For 50 Years John Koebke, veteran drayman and pioneer resident of the city, died at his home 625 North Tenth street, Saturday evening, following an illness of several months from which, however, he was thought to be recovering. A few days ago it was discovered that Mr. Koebke was suffering from an incurable malady and Saturday his condition became serious and he passed away suddenly, death coming to him while he was sleeping. Mr. Koebke predicted his own death when several months ago he was forced to give up his business because of his health, declaring to his family that he would not live a year if he retired from the dray business in which he had been engaged since the early 70’s. Mr. Koebke was loath to quit his business, which despite his 78 years he had insisted upon continuing and with success up to the time of his illness. Two months Mr. Koebke’s condition improved and he had hoped to resume his activities but the family had disposed of the dray line and refused to allow him to attempt it. Then it was that he declared that he would not long survive and true to his prediction, death claimed him in a few weeks. Coming to Manitowoc in 1861, Mr. Koebke was one of the best known pioneers of the city and was a familiar figure for many years. He was a native of Germany and born May 1, 1838. Mr. Koebke was twice married and is survived by eleven children, four of the first marriage and seven born of the second union, surviving with his widow. The children are: George, Arthur, Walter, Gustave, Misses Amanda and Erna, this city, Mrs. L. Prevla, Milwaukee, Mrs. S. Elliot and Leona, Chicago, Richard of Antigo and Paul of Kaukauna. Mr. Koebke, F. Leverenz and the late Gottlieb Karnofsky made up a trio of pioneer settlers whose birthdays occurred on the same day but whose ages were ten years apart, Mr. Koebke being the youngest of the trio. Mr. Karnofsky was 99 at his death. Mr. Koebke, the second to go 79, and Mr. Levernz, 89, and the last to survive, is seriously ill and there is no hope of his recovery. The annual celebration indulged in by the three in earlier years always attracted much interest. Funeral services for Mr. Koebke will be held from the late home Tuesday afternoon at 2, Rev. Machmiller officiating. Der Deutsche Krieger Verein of which deceased was a member will attend the services. Manitowoc Daily Herald, November 11, 1912 P. 1

PIONEERS CELEBRATE NATAL DAY
Three Old Residents Whose Ages Are Exactly Ten Years Apart, Feast
Three pioneer residents of the city, Gotlieb Karnofsky, Charles Leverenz and John Koebke, are celebrating their birthdays today, May 1 and a peculiar fact in connection is that exactly ten years differentiate their natal days, the first name being 93 years old, the second 83 and Mr. Koebke, 73. In honor of the event, friends have been invited to a celebration in which the spirit of good fellowship prevails. The memories of bygone days were told in reminiscences and Mr. Karnofsky remembered of having driven to Two Rivers just 20 years ago today in a cutter.

LOUIS C. KOEHLER LOUIS C. KOEHLER DIES TUESDAY AT AGE OF 87 Was Father of Famous Wood Expert Who Testified At Hauptmann Trial Louis C. Koehler, 87, father of Arthur Koehler of Madison, wood technologist of the University of Wisconsin and an important witness in the famous Hauptmann murder trial in New Jersey in 1935, died yesterday at his home in the village of Manitowoc Rapids. Mr. Koehler, father of five sons, and retired farmer and apiary proprietor, had been in failing health for several months. His wife died four years ago. The Koehlers moved to Rapids 20 years ago from their farm home near Tisch Mills. Funeral Friday Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from the Pfeffer funeral home, the Rev. Robert Wilkowske officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. Mr. Koehler, born in the northern part of the town of Mishicot near Tisch Mills in 1853, and spent his entire life in the county. He took up farming when a young man and then engaged in bee raising. He built a large apiary in the Koehler farm- yard at Tisch Mills. In 1875 he married Miss Ottilie Dallman and she assisted her husband in the bee business. They cared for more than 300 hives of bees. He distributed the honey by automobile and proudly boasted he operated the same motor vehicle for 17-year span. In 1921 the Koehlers disposed of their interest near Tisch Mills and moved to a small home on the outskirts of the village of Manitowoc Rapids. There they set up a few hives and continued in the honey business. Despite this age Mr. Koehler was able to gather the honey. His wife acted as cashier when customers came to the little home to make purchases. Reunion in 1933 There was a memorable family reunion at the Koehler home in Rapids in August, 1933, when the five sons came from all parts of the United States to visit their parents. After the famous Lindbergh trial at Flemington, N.J. in January, 1935, Arthur Koehler, the son, also came back to Manitowoc to visit his parents. The son’s testimony was an important link in the conviction of Bruno Hauptmann for the kidnapping and slaying of the Lindbergh baby. JOSEPH KOENIG DEATH CLAIMS JOSEPH KOENIG WIDELY KNOWN RESIDENT OF CITY PASSES AWAY AFTER BRIEF ILLNESS Founder of the Aluminum Industry In This Section Is Summoned While Patient At Hospital-Family In Germany As End Comes Death, which came to him after an illness of short duration, claimed Joseph Koenig, widely known resdient of the city, formerly a resident at Two Rivers, this afternoon, news of his demise coming as a great shock to the community as Mr. Koenig had been ill but a short time. He suffered an attack of pleurisy and it was only two or three days ago that he felt well enough to leave the hospital after being there but two days and came down to his old haunts at the Elks Club. In response to anxious inquiries of friends at that time he stated that the (sic) felt well enough except for the fact that he was weak and suffered from exhaustion. He did not look like his old self and remained down town only a short time and again took recourse to hospital treatment. His condition became alarming last evening and the end came shortly after noon today. Mr. Koenig's death came while his family, with exception of his son Remus Koenig, was abroad, Mrs. Koenig, a daughter-Mrs. Ruby Ellis and a grand daughter, Barbara Ellis, having departed some time ago for a tour of Europe and are now believed to be at Dueseldorf, Germany. A letter received from the party Oct. 31 said that at that time they were at Choburg, but that future letters should be addressed to Dueseldorf until furter notice. A cable has been dispatched informing Mrs. Koenig and daughter of the death of husband and father. Funeral to Be Monday Funeral services for Mr. Koenig will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the home, North Fourth and Park streets and will be in charge of the Elks Order of which Mr. Koenig was a member, affiliated with the Manitowoc lodge of which he was one of the first members. Mr. Koenig was known as the founder of the aluminum industry in this section of the country and had been identified with that industry for many years, having established plants at Two Rivers and later being identified with the Aluminum Goods Mfg. Co. here. He held extensive interests in other industries and was widely known in the business world here and outside. Mr. Koenig was for years vice-president of the Aluminum Goods Manufacturing co. and prior to that time head of the Aluminum Goods Manufacturing Co. of Two Rivers. He was the founder of the aluminum industry in this section of the state. He was born near Niesse, Germany, April 21, 1858, a son of Joseph and Magdelina Koenig. The father passed away in his native country and subsequently the mother came to this country with nine children, of whom Joseph Koenig was the seventh. Attended German Schools The deceased attended the schools in Germany, and the education there obtained was supplemented by private lessons. Upon his arrival here he worked in a factory at Two Rivers and later went to Indianapolis as a painter and decorator. He remained there from 1873 to 1880 after which he attended the Milwaukee Seminary for Teachers for one year. Having completed the course of study of that institution he removed to Louisville, Ky., where he taught school for three years and also studied law at the University of Louisville. He completed the full law course and was admitted to the bar of the state of Kansas, practicing as an attorney at Wichita for two years. At Wichita he established a vinegar factory but on account of the limited demand for this product he gave up this venture. But the facory continued and is still in operation. He erected dwellings and business blocks there, a swimming pool and gym but the city did not advance sufficiently to make this venture profitable. The collapse of the boom of 1886 swept away every penny of his earnings and in 1890 he left Wichita to locate in Chicago. Starts Aluminum Business From Wichita he went to Chicago and engaged in teaching for three years and during that time he first became interested in the aluminum ware business in this country. At his request his cousin, Arthur Reymond, exhibited some of the aluminum ware at the World's Fair in Chicago. Mr. Koenig also made similar exhibits at St. Louis and San Francisco. Most of the goods he displayed were manufactured in Germany. Because of the interest that the people took in the exhibits and the success he had in disposing of the product Mr. Koenig decided to start the manufacture of aluminum goods in the United States. He thus became one of the founders of the manufacture of these good in this country and took out many patents covering special aluminum utensils, invented by him. Was Inventive Genius The inventive genius which appeared to endow Mr. Koenig and which dominated his earlier years, manifested itself again in 18?? when he conceived the idea that a gliding boat could be constructed which would skim over the water without deep draugh. He built a model but before it was demonstrated a storm came and wrecked it. He also opened in Chicago a packet and apron supply laundry which he had to give up when he accepted a position in the schools as a teacher. In 1895 he moved to Two Rivers to establish himself in the manufacture of small aluminum ware such as sourvenirs, combs, hairpins and novelties of all descriptions which could be manufactured with a conservative amount of machinery and tools. The sum total of Mr. Koenig's fortune at this time was $500. It was difficult for him to find to what purpose aluminum metal was to be fitted and many of his first ventures turned out badly while others succeeded. The metal was new and its qualities unknown and the natural distrust of any thing new had to be overcome. During the course of three years $5,000 of outside capital was invested and an equal amount earned in the business. Plants Consolidated This factory was the first aluminum manufacturing plant in Wisconsin and one of the first exclusively aluminum manufacturies in the United States. In 1908 it was consolidated with the Aluminum Novelty Co. of this city, and the New Jersey Aluminum co. into the present Aluminum Goods Manufacturing Co. of which Mr. Koenig was made vice president. In his years of research and demonstration of his inventive genius many valuable patents have been granted to him, on various articles and processes now used in aluminum manufacture among which are the seamless fish net float and the U.S. army canteen. Mr. Koening also organized the Two Rivers Coal Co. Married at Louisville In later years, Mr. Koenig became interested in the manufacture of electric toys and similar articles and was the founder of the Metal Ware Corporation of Two Rivers. His son, Remus, is the head of the latter company. In November, 1884 at Louisville, Ky., Mr. Koenig was married to Miss Emma Krafft, who survives him. In addition there are two children, Mrs. Ruby Elis (sic), and Remus Koenig, both of this city. Mr. Koenig served for years as a member of the school board at Two Rivers and was also a member of the Masons, Elks and the Lakeside Country club. Koepke intimates that the boys overseas do not take kindly to the “dry” amendment and says that a similar move in France and Belgium is destined to be defeated. He encloses a number of clippings from papers there commenting on receipt of the news by the boys, some of which are as follows: Hockbelschundgeundheitstein, Ger. Jan. 23. When the news of prohibition reached here, Sgt. James Geharty Gee fainted. He was able to sit up the next day and could be heard singing in a weak voice: Glorious, glorious! Herald Times Reporter, February 21, 1976 P. 3 ******** BUT FOR LIFE SAVING PROCLIVITIES OF COMPANION, FLOYD HANSON WOULD HAVE DROWNED Floyd Hanson today owes his life to the presence of mind of Walter Koepke and Victor Giesler whole in the same connection the dexterity in the water of Koepke will be remembered by all those who witnessed this life saving feat Sunday as the greatest exhibition of nerve ever seen in this city. Hanson, Koepke, Geisler and Earl Plantico, attracted by the fine weather Sunday afternoon chose to go swimming in the river at Eighth street bridge. They furnished spectators much amusement as they alternately dove and performed aquatic feats in the first of the season’s sport. There was a big sea on, the waves strong current making the sport dangerous except for experts. Hanson, though a good swimmer, was carried out to the middle of the channel and soon after, his companions noted that he was in distress. Koepke who was nearest called to him but Hanson had swallowed too much water to answer though nodding vigorously with his head. Then he went completely under and Koepke swimming with all his might and main reached the point of Hanson’s disappearance and succeeded in bringing Hanson to the surface. Geisler and Plantico joined Koepke but in the meantime Hanson had almost lost his head and began grappling with his rescuer. The other boys shouted a warning, but Koepke with rare presence of mind, treaded water for a minute, released his right hand and struck his drowning companion a stunning blow over the head. The three boys then fastened the life preserves that had been thrown out from the launch. Restless, under Hanson and he was towed to shore dazed and helpless. A physician was summoned but Hanson who was taken into Kraemer’s buffet, was revived with a “first aid” that was part of Kraemer’s stock in trade and there was little for the doctor to do except advise getting the chilled Hanson into bed immediately. The bridge was thronged with spectators impotent to help. One young man, John Thiele, of Two Rivers, hastily launched a canoe that was on the dock but had no paddles. Equipped with a piece of board as a paddle he could make no headway against the current and waves and was nearly swamped by his own exertions. It was indeed a narrow escape for Hanson and in all probability he will never be so near death again and live to tell the tale. With teeth chattering, Hanson told of his experience as swathed in a blanket in Kraemer’s and too weak to be dressed, he gulped down several glasses of brandy. “I guess I must have been taken with a cramp. All at once I began to feel my strength leave me and I tried to call to the boys. Then my mouth filled with water and I couldn’t speak a word. I heard Koepke ask me if I was all in and signaled as best I could that I was. They tell me I was striking out into midstream when I felt myself ‘slipping’ but I thought I must get into the current to reach shore. I saw Koepke coming and for a moment gave up fighting. This was when I went down, I guess. I don’t remember trying to grab Koepke. I remember seeing stars, however. Guess that’s when he cracked me over the head. If he hadn’t done that I probably would have gotten a strangle hold on him and they’d be dragging the river for both of us now, for after I went down once, I didn’t know what I was doing.” Hanson was taken home and put to bed and except for the shock, suffered no ill effects.
