AUGUST KLEMAN DEATH FROM A FALL August Klemann (sic) is Thrown From a Horse and Afterwards Dies August Klemann, a German aged thirty-five years was until recently in the employ of R.D. Smart, Sheriff of this county and in that capacity sometimes served papers and did other duties assigned to him by his employer which necessitated a trip into the country. Last Thursday, he was sent to the Town of Rapids on some business, performing which he was returning home on horseback. When near the Klingholtz place, about two miles from the city, the horse, an old and faithful animal, stumbled and threw his rider to the ground with great violence. Klemenn was evidently stunned but did not think he had sustained any serious injury. He was taken to the court house by a gentleman residing near the scene of the accident, where, although he received good medical treatment and the best of care from Mr. Smart and his family, he died on Friday morning from internal injuries. Mr. Klemann leaves a wife and four small children, the youngest not two weeks old, whose circumstances are such that our charitable citizens may do much to alleviate their wants. Der Nord Western, June 23, 1898 ********** Charles Klingholz of Manitowoc Rapids died on Friday of last week. He has been in feeble health for some time though actively engaged in business. He was born in Spockhoevel, Germany, June 27, 1812 and came to this country in July 1849, settling at Manitowoc Rapids, then the most important place in the county. Soon after his arrival he opened a general store on the corner where Adolph Kugler now lives. The building occupied then as a store was moved to Manitowoc on the ice during the winter by team and is now on the corner of Eighth and Quay streets and used by Robert Lill as a cigar factory. Some years after, Mr. Klingholz built a saw and grist mill about one-quarter of a mile farther up the river than where the present mill is located. Later on he discontinued the sawmill and moved the flour mill to its present site. When his sons became old enough to take charge of the business he transferred it to them. On the death of Charles, Oscar and Hugo he resumed control of the business and although advanced in years he gave personal attention to its extensive details. He was the organizer of the Manitowoc Rapids Fire Insurance Company and was its secretary until a few years ago. He wan an enterprising man and took great interest in home industry and development. HUGO KLINGHOLZ (d. 1891) From the Files of the Pilot - Twenty-Five years ago (1891) On Monday Hugo Klingholz of Manitowoc Rapids received injuries which are quite likely to result fatally. He and his brother-in-law, Will Lueps, were taking water at a hydrant near the residence of J.E. Harris. They had a tank such as is used by threshing machines. When the tank was about filled the hose was lifted out and water spurted on the horses. Mr. Klingholz jumped to their heads to hold them but he was thrown down and one of the wheels passed over his body. Four of his ribs on the left side were broken, some being splintered and broken in several places. He was taken to the residence of J.E. Harris where he now lies hovering between life and death. Mr. Klingholz is one of the best citizens of the county and every one prays for his recovery. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., June 22, 1916 ********* Death of Hugo J. Klingholz on Sun. morning as a result of injuries received in an accident the previous Mon. He is the son of our outstanding fellow citizen Carl Klingholz, and was born on 13 Nov. 1852 in Manitowoc Rapids. In 1874, at the age of 22, he undertook a partnership with his brother Oscar in operating his father's mill in Manitowoc Rapids. Oscar preceded him in death several years ago. On 22 Feb. 1878 Hugo married Sophie Lueps, a daughter of the late Jacob Lueps, with whom he had 4 children - 1 son and 3 daughters. Mrs. Klingholz passed away a few weeks ago as we reported at the time. (The article goes on to describe the impact of his death on the community and of the difficult time his parents were having on the loss of their oldest child, having 6 sons and 4 daughters already preceding him in death.) Manitowoc had never seen a more magnificent funeral procession. Mr. Bloquelle led the ceremony in the name of the Sons of Hermann Lodge and Mr. Nash delivered the graveside oration. Der Nord Westen, 25 June 1891 ******** DEATH OF HUGO KLINGHOLZ. Hugo Klingholz who was injured on Monday of last week died on Sunday morning last. It was one of the most remarkable cases of vitality on record. An examination after death showed that the heavily loaded wagon had passed over him. The spleen was utterly annihilated, the liver was badly contused, the bowels were seriously injured and they and the stomach were filled with blood. The doctors expressed surprise that with the injuries death did not ensue within an hour after the occurance of the accident. Mr. Klingholz was 39 years old and was born in Manitowoc Rapids. He was a young man of considerable enetrprise (sic) and of sterling character. He conducted a large business and under his management everything moved on smoothly. He took a deep interest in the public schools and was indefatigable in his efforts to build up the public school of his native village. For years he was district clerk; the people had perfect confidence in him and though they some times grumbled somewhat at the expense the fact that Hugo Klingholz directed improvements silenced all criticism. He was a warm-hearted thoroughly honest man who never swerved from the line of duty or injured another to benefit himself. A few weeks ago his wife died and it was while caring for her grave that the accident occurred which resulted in his death. Manitowoc Pilot, Thursday, June 25, 1891 P. 3 ******** A CARD OF THANKS. We desire to express our gratitude to all friends who kindly assisted us in the care of our beloved deceased; especially to Mr. and Mrs. Harris, who so generously offered their hospitality to the man, who was a stranger to them, and did all in their power to aid in giving him relief; the same thanks are due to the neighbors of Mr. Harris, and to the physicians who acted not merely as professional men, but as friends. We likewise feel deeply indebted to Messrs. Nash and Bloquelle fo the kind and sympathetic words spoken at the grave; to the Saengerbund for the songs rendered, and to the lodges that particiapated in the services. The floral offerings, and the general attendance at the funeral, were proofs of sympathy, for which we are very thankful. Mr. Char. Klingholz & Family. Mr. J. Leueps & Family.
