CHARLOTTE H. KANELLOS Mrs. Vassos Kanellos, Famous Interpretater of Greek Art, Dies Here Former Charlotte Markham, Known Internationally, Had Been Ill a Month Mrs. Vassos Kanellos, the former Charlotte Markham, known internationally as Tanagra Kanellos, interpreter of Greek art, died at the family home, 521 North Fifth street, this morning. She had been ill for about a month, and her death was due to septicaemia. Funeral services have not been completed. Mrs. Kanellos was born in Manitowoc on January 22, 1892, the daughter of the late Herbert Markham and Mrs. Markham. She was a graduate and later an instructor at the Chicago Art Institute. She traveled abroad, studying in the galleries and art schools of Europe for three years before her marriage to Mr. Kanellos on October 9, 1920. She was a professor of history of art at Downer college, Milwaukee, and director of the art school of the Milwaukee Art Institute. She maintained a studio in Milwaukee for some time, and later had a studio in Athens, Greece, with her husband. Travelled Extensively The Kanelloses travelled extensively after their marriage, producing drama festivals in theaters here and abroad. Under the auspices of the Greek government they produced the Delphic festival in 1927, and as the result of that festival they were commiss- ioned by the Greek Government to direct and organize the ancient classic outdoor theaters of Greece. Audiences of as many as 50,000 persons at a performance witnessed their presentations in the classic theaters of Aeschylos, Euripides, Argus, Olympia, Opeidauros and Megalopolis. The Greek government and scholars of the country who made up the organization known as the Society of Hellic Choral Drama commissioned Mr. and Mrs. Kanellos to be directors of the institute maintained by the society. Outstanding performances given by the couple include the festival at the Chicago Auditorum under the auspices of the Drama League of America in 1933, a festival supported by more than 100 patrons of the Chicago Grand Opera and the Chicago Sympony Orchestra; performances during the two years they were at the Greek Theater at Berkeley, Calif., at the invitation of the University of California, and the performances at the Goodwin Theater at the Chicago Art Institute. Their last performance was on May 7 at Orchestra Hall in Chicago, under the auspices of the adult education department of the University of Chicago. Not alone for her dancing was Mrs. Kanellos known throughout the world, but for her execution of murals and water color paintings. She designed the stages for many of the important theaters here and in Greece. She was also a writer and her work appeared in the Theater Arts Monthly, outstanding publication of the legitimate stage. Critics referred to her work as the completion of what Isadora Duncan started. While Miss Duncan had the Gricidean idea, she lacked the background and tradition that Tanagra Kanellos brought to her interpretations. The music and tradition of the people of Greece were the source from which she drew the material for her art. From that tradition and art of the theater was compounded the chorodrama revival of which brought Mrs. Kanellos world-wide renown in cultural circles. Her aim in her art was to unite Athena and America spiritually and her best performances were given when she realized that many Americans were in the audience at the Greek theaters. Her stage name of Tanagra she received from the Greek people in whose eyes she resembled the famous statue of Tanagra. Her art reflected her belief that if there were more traditional Greek art in the American theater there would be an uplift to a greater spiritual democracy instead of an economic one. Survivors of Mr. Kanellos are the widower, one daughter, Nenea; mother, Mrs. Herbert Markham; and two sisters, Margaret Markham Culver of this city and Elizabeeth Markham Karow of Evanston, Ill. Manitowoc Herald Times, July 27, 1937 P. 2 ********* Funeral services for Charlotte Markham Kanellos, who died at the family home Tuesday morning, will be held Friday at 2 p.m. from the St. James Episcopal church, the Rev. Markham will leave Friday morning for Chicago where they will attend the memorial service at the Holy Trinity Cathedral. The regular Sunday services will be held, and these will be followed by eulogies by friends, professors and church dignitaries. Both the Greek and English language will be used. WILLIAM KARLMAN Manitowoc Man Killed at Kimberly Wm. Karlman, Employee of Engineering Work, Falls to His Death There. William Karlman, of this city employed by the Manitowoc Engineering company, was killed at Kimberly, near Appleton this afternoon when he fell fifteen feet from a drum which he was working upon at the plant of the Kimberly Clark Co., at the paper mills. News of the tragedy reached here in a phone message to the Shipbuilding Corporation, with which the Engineering Works is allied. Karlman died shortly after he fell from the drum and without regaining consciousness. The accident happened at 2 o'clock this afternoon. Dr. Harold Hansen of the Yards and a son of Karlman, employed at the yards, left for Kimberly at once. Mr. Karlmann was about 45 and resided with his family at 2414 Liberty Place, this city. He had been employed with the Engineering Company some time. Manitowoc Herald News, Manitowoc, Wis. February 2, 1928 P. 1 ******** KILLED AS HE WAS ABOUT TO FINISH LABOR Backward Step Off Platform Plunges Man To Death at Kimberly There was the irony of Fate in the tragedy that yesterday claimed the life of William Karlman, Manitowoc man who suffered fatal injuries when he fell from a platform about a large drain upon which he was at work at the mills of the Kimberly-Clark Co., at Kimberly. Mr. Karlman would have closed his labors at Kimberly today and was planning his return home to prepare for a trip to Tennessee where he was to take charge of work for the Manitowoc Engineering Co. with whom he was employed as field man. Mr. Karlman sustained fatal injury when he fell from a scaffold upon which he was making inspection of work on the drum, presumably as result of a misstep. No one witnessed the accident. Mr. Karlman’s helper discovering that Mr. Karlman was not on the scaffold when he turned to address him and upon looking down, saw the body of his superintendent on the concrete floor twenty-five feet below. Mr. Karlman’s neck was broken in the fall and life was extinct when fellow workers reached him. Body Brought Here. The accident happened only an hour after work of the afternoon had started. The body of Mr. Karlman was brought here last night by J.L. Wattawa and taken to the Wattawa parlors to be prepared for burial and later taken to the home. Born in Germany August 1, 1873, Mr. Karlman was fifty-three at his last birthday and had been a resident of this city since the age of seven when he arrived with his parents. He gained his education in the local schools and became a stationary engineer. In 1898 he was married at Stetsonville to Miss Lucile Korn and the family took up its home here and have resided here since. About twenty five years ago Mr. Karlman became identified with the new company that took over the ship yards and has since been in the company’s employ succeeding to the position of field construction man. PIONEERS CELEBRATE NATAL DAY
Three Old Residents Whose Ages Are Exactly Ten Years Apart, Feast
Three pioneer residents of the city, Gotlieb Karnofsky, Charles Leverenz and John Koebke, are celebrating their birthdays today, May 1 and a peculiar fact in connection is that exactly ten years differentiate their natal days, the first name being 93 years old, the second 83 and Mr. Koebke, 73. In honor of the event, friends have been invited to a celebration in which the spirit of good fellowship prevails. The memories of bygone days were told in reminiscences and Mr. Karnofsky remembered of having driven to Two Rivers just 20 years ago today in a cutter.

CARL KASBAUM DEAD BODY OF CARL KASTBAUM (sic) FOUND SUNDAY His face buried in the sand where he had fallen over a five foot embankment at the river end of South Nineteenth street, the dead body of Carl Kastbaum, for many years a farmer in the town of Newton, was discovered early yesterday morning by John H. Nuhs, 611 South Nineteenth street, who immediately reported his discovery to the police. Rigor mortis had set in and the man apparently had been dead for several hours before his body was found. Dr . G. Kemper, county coroner and the district attorney were called but decided no inquest would be held, holding the death was a purely accidentally one. Had Lost His Way. From the indication where the body was found Kastbaum had apparently lost his way, and the fall from the five foot wall stunned him when his head struck a stone. He fell in such a manner his face was buried in the soft sand and death resulted from smothering. The body was removed to the Frazier and Shimek undertaking parlors where it was prepared for burial and was then taken to the home of a daughter, Mrs. John Anic, 522 Jay street, from where the funeral will be held at 2 o'clock tomorrow afternoon. Carl Kastbaum was born in Germany June 8, 1852, and would have been seventy-three at his next birthday. He came to this country at the age of two and a half years with his parents, the family settling in Newton where he grew to manhood and married Mary Klusmeyer forty-five years ago. He made his home on the old farm homestead until the death of his wife January 13, 1921, when he disposed of his interest and came to the city to make his home with his son-in-law an daughter. Mr. and Mrs. John Anic. He had been about the house as usual Saturday and his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Winkel of Howard's Grove, had been in to visit him. When he failed to return Saturday night, Mr. and Mrs. Anic concluded he had gone to Howard's Grove for a visit and the report of the finding of his body Sunday came as a severe shock.
