THEODORE JAHN Death last Mon. of Theodor Jahn, an old settler who 14 days ago lost the little finger of the right hand in an accident, but did not act until it was too late to do anything. He was buried yesterday and leaves a wife and 3 children. (I was assured by the Civil War Roundtable that this is the Civil War veteran. He died June 5, 1878) Der Nord Westen, 06 June 1878 ******* Theador Johns (sic) whose critical condition was noticed last week, died on Monday afternoon. It is seldom that death results from so slight a course as the breaking of a finger. Manitowoc Pilot, Thursday, June 6, 1878 P. 3 ******* The following is a death notice for Theodore's son Mrs. Pauline Petrowsky of Newton has received word of the death of her brother Frank Jahn who made his home at Minneapolis in recent years. This leaves Mrs. Petrowsky the only surviving member of the Jahn family who in the early days resided on South Tenth street where the father, Theodore Jahn, civil war veteran, conducted a saloon during the 70's and early 80's. It will be remembered Mrs. Petrowsky lost her sister last fall a Mrs. Weber, who together with her husband was killed in a railroad crossing automobile accident at Chicago. JOSEPH JANA Joseph Jana, Branch, Ends Life in Village RETIRED FARM OPERATOR HAD GIVEN NO HINT Funeral Held Today at Evergreen; Victim Was 68 Years Old Joseph Jana, 68, single, who spent the holiday week in this city with his brother and sisters, returned to his home in the village of Branch Saturday afternoon and ended his life with a bullet through his brain. Neighbors of the dead man who noticed that there was no activity about the Jana home Saturday afternoon, tried to enter but found the door locked. They notified Adolph Jana, North Tenth Street, a brother, who hurried out to Branch and broke down the door. The dead body of Mr. Jana was found inside the bed chamber. The bullet had entered the head above the right temple and came out through the top of his skull. Coroner Gerald Rau of Two Riers, was notified and visited the scene but decided that no inquest would be necessary. For several years Mr. Jana had been living a retired life in the Village of Branch where he tilled a few acres. Born in 1865 near Reifs Mills, he operated a farm in the county for many years. Several years ago he disposed of the farm and moved to Branch where he continued to make his home. Early last week, he came to Manitowoc and spent several days with his brother, Adolph, here. Despite the pleading of Mr. and Mrs. Jana that he remain over New Years, he evidenced a desire to return to his home on Saturday morning. Mrs. Jana drove him out to Branch and stayed with him an hour, until the newly lighted fire in the stove had warmed the home. Mrs. Jana then bade her brother-in-law good bye and started out to her car. She said that she heard the key turn in the lock as she passed down the walk but did not give this incident any particular thought until word came that Mr. Jana had ended his life. During his stay in the city last week, the dead man gave no hint that he was despondent or intended to end his life. Survivors are one brother, Adolph of this city and three sisters, Mrs. Anna Strouf, Coffee Creek, Mont., Mrs. Emma Curry, Chicago and Mrs. William Rank, city. Funeral services for Mr. Jana were held this afternoon from the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei Funeral home in charge of the Rev. O.A. Menke. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery. CAPT OLE JENSEN CAPT. JENSEN DIES Friday AT HIS RESIDENCE Veteran of Seven Seas And Great Lakes Was Active Up Until The End Captain Ole Jensen, a veteran of the Great Lakes in the days of the old "wind-jammers' and who also spent his early manhood in sailing the seven seas, died Friday afternoon at the home, 735 North Tenth street. Up to a week ago the deceased had been active about the home. He accompanied his daughter, Mrs. Geneva Knoedler, on a trip downtown at that time. Since then he had been confined to his bed. Capt. Jensen captained and owned a number of sailing vessels in Manitowoc in the earlier days. Later, when he retired from active sailing, he worked at the ship yards here and during the world war was in charge of the rigging loft at the Manitowoc Shipbuilding corporation. Funeral services for the veteran mariner will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. from the Frazier mortuary and at 2 p.m. from St. Paul's Lutheran church, Rev. Walden officiating. In his youth he took to the seas and sailed the ocean for a number of years. His voyagings carried him to ports in South America, the West Indies, Aftrica and Russia. At one time he was a shipmate of John A. Johnson, local shoe merchant, on an ocean voyage. In later years he came to Manitowoc to locate and at once took up sailing the lakes. He became the owner and master of the schooners Isolda Bock and the Petrel. He also joined with Capt. Anton Johnson in the building of the schooner Graham Bros. which he sailed for several years. When the sailing vessels gradually gave way to steam on the Great Lakes, Capt. Jensen retired from the lakes. But he continued in active life, going to the ship yards to take over the work in the rigging loft of the yards here. He held this position until illness a few months ago forced him to retire. Married Twice The deceased was married here to Alava Olson, daughter of the late Capt. and Mrs. Jens J. Olson, who passed away in 1905. He was married again to Serena Peterson of this city. She died only six weeks ago. The deceased was an active member and worker in the St. Paul's Lutheran church on North Tenth street.
