FRANK HOFFMAN (d. 1961) Frank Hoffman, 86, Dies at Oshkosh Frank Hoffman, long associated with the civic, commercial, social and moral welfare of his adopted community, died shortly after the noon hour Friday. Mr. Hoffman, 86, had been at Alexian Brothers Nursing Home, Oshkosh. Death came after an extended illness. The Hoffman residence is at 843 Lincoln Blvd. Until about three years ago, Mr. Hoffman had been president of Lindstedt Hoffman Co., insurance and real estate agency, of 1210 Washington St. From the time Mr. Hoffman came to Manitowoc before the turn of the century where Nov. 25, 1903, he married Amanda Christiansen, he had given unstintingly of his time, money and personal service to the betterment of the city. So outstanding was his effort that Nov. 6, 1951, he was recognized by the Lions Club and presented with its Distinguished Service Award. Born in 1875 He was lauded by Atty. Austin Smith, chairman of the committee making the investigation, as an individual who “has promoted the principles of good government and good citizenship. He is a man who has born in mind his obligations as a citizen to the nation, to the state and the community and who has given freely of his time, labor, means and loyalty to those ends.” The native of the Town of Centerville, Manitowoc County, was born Feb. 12, 1875, son of the late Peter and Elizabeth Schill Hoffman. He received his early education in a parochial school and was graduated from the First Ward High School of this city. Subsequently he entered the University of Wisconsin, being graduated with a B.A. degree in 1900. In July of that year he became associated with Julius Lindstedt and two years later was admitted as a junior partner in the insurance firm. When Lindstedt retired in 1924, Mr. Hoffman became sole owner. Various Capacities Throughout the years, Mr. Hoffman served in various capacities to promote real estate and insurance and was elected president of Wisconsin Association of Insurance Agents and was a director of Wisconsin Association of Real Estate Boards. He was a member of National Association of Real Estate Boards and was instrumental in the organization of a local real estate board and headed it as president. In addition to serving six years on the library board prior to 1925, Mr. Hoffman was also a director of Hotel Manitowoc as well as a director of Holy Family Hospital. Promotion of industry in his community was a strong point which Mr. Hoffman never overlooked and he was instrumental in raising funds for the purchase of sites for plants of Aluminum Goods Mfg. Co. now Mirro Aluminum Co., and Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry. It was also largely through his efforts that Invincible Metal Furniture Co. was attracted to the city. The activities were carried out under the Manitowoc Citizens Assn., organized in 1912 and which Mr. Hoffman helped found and serve as president. During World War I the insurance-real estate agency was named by Emergency Fleet Corp., a federal agency, to act as agents for the 100 homes constructed to provide accommodations for workers at Manitowoc Shipbuilding Inc. in Riverview Park Addition. Later the local agency purchased the site and buildings and made them available to residents. Highest Honor His service in cause of youth was legend. JON HOFFMAN (d. 1949) Mother Held in Death of Baby Hoffman Tot Is Strangled Murder Warrant Lists Mrs. LeRoy Hoffman BULLETIN Mrs. LeRoy Hoffman, through her attorney, Lyman F. Fischer, entered a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity when she appeared before Judge O.T. Bredesen in municipal court here this afternoon. A first degree murder warrant has been issued for a 27 year old mother being held by authorities who are investigating the death of her strangled son today. The mother, Mrs. LeRoy Hoffman, was slated to appear in municipal court this afternoon for preliminary examination following the strangulation of her two and one half years old son, John Kent, early last night… The police and Coroner Theodore Teitgen were informed of the boy’s death shortly after 8:30 last night by Dr. Charles Wall. Dr. Wall had been called to the Hoffman home at 1521 Hamilton street by the husband, a 29 year old Manitowoc painter. Sent on an Errand Mr. Hoffman had been sent to a drug store about 7 o’clock last night on an errand by Mrs. Hoffman, according to the story told by Dr. Teitgen after questioning of Mrs. Hoffman. While the father was gone the boy was strangled but on returning home the father was sent on another errand to Dr. Wall’s office, where Mrs. Hoffman had been during the afternoon. Then, according to Dr. Teitgen, Mr. Hoffman returned home. He asked his wife where the youngster was, and Mrs. Hoffman replied, “upstairs dead.” Mr. Hoffman immediately notified Dr. Wall, according to the coroner. He in turn notified the police and officers Joseph Michal and Robert Schmidt got in touch with Coroner Teitgen. Lt. Elmer Scherer and Chief Kuplic arrived at the Hoffman home shortly after with Dr. Teitgen. Meant to Take Own Life The coroner said Mrs. Hoffman admitted strangling the boy and told him that she had intentions of committing suicide after she committed the act. Then later she changed her mind, according to Dr. Teitgen, and planned on killing her husband. However, the coroner said she gave no indication at any time that she might do either. Mrs. Hoffman was confined to the county jail during the night. This morning she was again questioned by the coroner and he said there was no change in her story. Funeral services for the Hoffman child will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Mittnacht-Kollath funeral home. The Rev. John Landowski will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The survivors are the parents, Mr. and Mrs. LeRoy Hoffman; a sister, Judy, aged six weeks; maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E. L. LILLIE BUERSTATTE HOLLANDER DEATH SUMMONS SUDDEN FOR MRS. GEO. HOLLANDER Blood Poisoning, Developing From Skin Eruption, Causes Her Death At Hospital This Morning Blood Poisoning, which resulted from a small skin eruption on the face a week ago, this morning caused the death of Mrs. Lillie Hollander, wife of George Hollander, secretary and treasurer of the F. C. Buerstatte company. The deceased, who was active in Girl Scout work in Manitowoc and prominent in Wesley M.E. church circles was beloved by a host of friends many of whom were unaware that she was in a critical condition. Her demise occurred at 1:15 this morning at the Holy Family hospital, where she was removed yesterday from the home, 1109 Green street, when her condition became serious. The death of Mrs. Hollander came at a time when she, with her husband, was making plans for the observance of their silver wedding anniversary later in the summer. The skin infection was apparently responding to treatment but yesterday her condition became worse and she was rushed to the hospital in a vain hope of arresting the spread of the poison. Prominent in Church Work Her maiden name was Lillie Buerstatte, she being the daughter of the late Mr. and F.C. Buerstatte. She was born in this city July 30, 1885, and attended the grades and the high school of the old First ward school from which she graduated. She was married Sept. 11, 1907 to George Hollander and has always made her home here. In addition to her home duties Mrs. Hollander found time to devote attention to the Girl Scout movement in Manitowoc. She was a life long member of the Wesley M. E. church, sang in the choir, and for thirty years was a Sunday school teacher in the school, always teaching beginners classes. Her zeal and devotion to this cause won her the gratitude of fellow workers in the congregation. The deceased was also president of the Mission society of the church. Besides the husband the deceased is survived by two daughters, Mrs. George Markham, Two Rivers, and Ruth at home, a son Carl, and one granddaughter. Four brothers, Julius, Richard and Charles of this city, and Fred of Seattle, Wash., and four sisters, Mrs. A.T. Baker of St. Paul, Mrs. Vincent Romoser, Fort Atkinson, Mrs. Fred Groll and Mrs. Leland Huppert, both of this city. JOSEPH C. HOLLY JOSEPH HOLLY, SHOTO MILLWRIGHT, LOSES LIFE WHILE SEEKING TO PROTECT DAM FROM ICE JAM EARLY TODAY BODY CARRIED UNDER ICE AND THROUGH GATES HAS NOT BEEN RECOVERD. One death, considerable property damage from floods, a blackade of the Soo tracks ??? of the city caused by a landslide, flooded cellar, and street, these are some of the effects of the heavy rain which has prevailed for more than twenty four hours and which early this morning took on the appearance of a cloudburst. Joseph Holly, millwright and owner of the Neshoto mill, lost his life there this morning when he fell or was knocked into the river by a piece of ice. Up to a late hour this afternoon the body had not been recovered. With Michael Schimmel and another man Mr. Holly was engaged in cutting ice about the dam in order to open the gates to prevent a recurrence of the damage a year ago when the dam was completely washed out and a loss of $3,000 ocrasioned (sic) during an ice jam. Mr. Holly, in attempting to raise the gates lost his balance or was struck by a chunk of floating ice, and fell into the water, the body being carried under the ice and through the gates of the dam. With the weight of a heavy coat and other clothing which he wore Mr. Holly was unable to save himself and men working with him could not reach him in time to render aid. The tragedy created much excitement at Neshoto and in this city where Mr. Holly was well known, being a visitor in the city almost daily. Mr. Holly was 48 years of age and had been engaged in the milling business at Neshoto for many years. He was widely known throughout the county and the news of his death and the circumstances surrounding it will be greatly deplored. Besides a widow Mr. Holly is survived by three children. A year ago the Holly mill sustained a heavy loss ??? reason of the dam going out and the floods caused by the ice jam, it being said that the damage totaled more than $3,000. With the strong current that is caused in the river by the heavy rains and ice, it is feared that the body of the unfortunate man has been carried far from the spot where he lost his life and that it may be some time before it is recovered. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Thursday, January 27, 1916 P.1 ********* BODY OF HOLLY IS NOT RECOVERED, SEARCH IS RENEWED HIGH WATER FORCES ABANDONMENT OF SEARCH FOR BODY OF SHOTO MILLER YESTERDAY AFTER-NOON. MAY NOT RECOVER IT The body of Joseph Holly, the Neshoto miller, whi (sic) lost his life while trying to protect the dam from being carried out by an ice jam yesterday, has not been recovered and little hope is entertained that the body will be found for some time. It is feared that the body has been carried far from the place where Holly lost his life and that owing to the ice and current it may not be found until spring, if ever. High water forced the abandonment of the search for the body yesterday afternoon, making it impossible for those engaged in the search to continue the work. However just as soon as it is possible to do so the search will be resumed in hope that by some chance the body may not have been carried away by the current and can be recoverd. News of the tragic death of Mr. Holly occasioned widespread regret and aroused a wave of sympathy for the stricken family. Mr. Holly was one of the few millers of the county who had continued in the business and had been successful and though a year ago he sustained a heavy loss when the dam was wrecked by an ice jam and much other damage to his property resulted, Mr. Holly had owned and operated the mill at Shoto for many years. The failure of searchers to recover the body adds to the tragedy of Mr. Holly's death and the sorrow of family and friends. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Friday, January 28, 1916 P.1 ******** RESUME SEARCH FOR BODY OF JOS. HOLLY Twenty-five searchers today resumed efforts to recover the body of Joseph Holly, the Shoto miller who lost his life while engaged in an effort to protect the dam from ice jams. Owing to the high water the search had to be abandoned Saturday but it was again taken this morning. There seems to be little hope that the body will [be] recovered at this time, though the search is being diligently prosecuted. The greatest sympathy is extended to Mrs. Holly and the bereaved family whose sorrow is intensified by falure (sic) to recover the body. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, January 31, 1916 P.4 ******** EXTRA! FIND BODY OF JOS. HOLLY AT NESHOTO The body of Joseph Holly, the Shoto miller, who lost his life several weeks ago when he fell from the dam ???? trying to protect it from the ???? was found late today ??? cu???? of a mile from the spot where the accident occurred. The body was in a fair state of preservation and was taken to the home to be prepared for burial. The body had become lodged in the ice at the point where it was found. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Friday, April 7, 1916 P.1 ********* BODY FOUND AFTER TEN WEEKS - WELL PRESERVED After a search in which Fred Jachimstahl and Ed Bishop followed the river to this city, last Friday, dragging with hooks they found the body of Joseph Holly of Shoto who was drowned January 27th. The body was found on the return up the river a half mile from Shoto in two feet of water, a short distance from shore half covered with sand but well preserved and uninjured. The funeral was held Sunday afternoon. The Reporter, Fri., Apr. 14, 1916 ********* HOLLY FUNERAL TO BE HELD FROM HOME SUNDAY AT 1 Body Was Found in Two Feet of Water and Half Covered by Sand after All Day Search Yesterday Funeral services for the late Joseph Holly, the Neshoto miller who lost his life on January 27 in the river there and whose body was found yesterday, will be held from the late home at Shoto tomorrow and the body will be brought to this city for interment at Evergreen. The body of Mr. Holly was recovered by Fred Jachimstahl and Edward Bishop late yesterday after a search which had started early in the morning and in which the two men had followed the river as far as Two Rivers. Returning, one on each side of the river, dragging with a hook, they found the body about one-half mile from Neshoto in two feet of water only a short distance from the shore and half covered by sand. No marks were on the body and it was in good state and was taken into the boat and carried to the home where it later it was prepared for burial. Mr. Jachimstahl said today that the body was found at a spot where no one would have expected it to be. The recovery of the body of Mr. Holly is comforting to the family and to friends. ALEX HOLM EXTRA! 6 YEAR OLD BOY DROWNED IN RIVER TODAY Body Recovered and Effort Made to Save With Pulmotor Playing on the dock at the foot of North Sixth street at 3 o’clock this afternoon, Alex Holm, 6-year-old son of John Holm, 602 Commercial street, fell from the dock into the river and was drowned. The body was recovered fifteen minutes later by Officers Dueno, Christiansen and Carls and Drs. Meany, Donahue and Roberts are at work in an effort to revive the boy by use of the pulmotor. Repeated warning to children to remain away from the dock have been unheeded though oft times they have been driven away. Children with the Holm boy witnessed the accident today but instead of notifying the Hall warehouse to secure aid, ran a block to the home to summon the mother. The police were notified and recovered the body about ten feet from the dock. After working over the boy for nearly an hour physicians gave up and pronounced the child dead. MARGARET HOLMES “AUNT” MAGGIE HOLMES FINDS PEACE IN DEATH Life an Example of Christian Faith Is Ended Miss Maggie Holmes, known to a large circle of friends here as “Aunt Maggie” died yesterday morning at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Hoffman, corner Eighth and Hamilton street, with whom she had been staying for the last two years. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at two o’clock from the Hoffman home with the Rev. D. C. Jones, Presbyterian pastor, of Neenah, officiating at the services. Burial will be at Evergreen. Maggie Holmes was born at Moy, Charlemont county, Terrone, Ireland, seventy- five years ago, her anniversary date being January 10. She remained on the Emerald Isle until the death of her mother in 1861 and a year later came to Manitowoc to make her home and with the exception of twelve years spent at Chicago has always made her residence here. Miss Holmes was never married and is the last surviving member of the family, leaving surviving her only nephew, George Eaton of Shreveport, Alabama. Mrs. George Eaton, Sr., a former resident of this city, a sister, passed away a number of years ago. Lived Life of Christian Miss Holmes’ life is an example of what Christian faith can do. She is the oldest member of the Presbyterian church in this city and was a faithful worker through all of the years, many converts to the faith being directly due to her labors. Her membership here dates back to 1863 and the presence of the Rev. D. C. Jones at the funeral service is the carrying out of a promise made to Miss Holmes at the time Rev. Jones was pastor of the local church. At the age of two months, Miss Holmes lost the sight of one of her eyes as the result of an attack of smallpox and at the age of seven her sight was restored, she always maintained through prayer and she enjoyed complete vision until six years ago when her sight again became affected. Happy Even in Adversity Her affliction did not however affect a naturally happy disposition nor did her faith waiver during a long period of time when she was left practically destitute. During this time a sum of money began to arrive monthly and no trace of the sender could be found, although at Christmas there was always an extra amount of money and other gifts. Then on a Christmas morning years ago Miss Holmes learned that the money came from her nephew, George Eaton from whom she had not heard in over thirty years but for whom, she said, she had never ceased to pray. She could repeat a great part of the bible and was a great student of the book and death to her came as a reunion with her loved ones who had gone before. Her end came peacefully and was release from s uffering which had been patiently endured. MEAD HOLMES, JR. Death of Mead Holmes Jr. Our community was startled yesterday with the intelligence of the sudden death of Sergeant Mead Holmes, Jr. The sad intelligence fell with crushing weight upon those who knew his moral worth and manly principle; and everywhere in the vicinity his loss is deeply deplored. Ardent, generous and truthful; at the age when adolescence is verging into manhood prime; with christian principle firmly engrafted upon the elements of a noble soul, he was just the kind of man to realize the requirements of the great cause of Human Liberty, and the struggle for a Constitutional Government; and though surrounded by the comforts of a home and friends who almost idolized him; the only son of loving parents; he left a good situation and enlisted in the 21st Wisconsin volunteers, sharing their hardships, and doing his duty in a manner which secured the respect of his comrades and the confidence of his officers even in that glorious regiment were all have done so well. The best evidence of the patriotism of this brave hearted and noble minded boy is the fact that he has for years been suffering from periodical attacks of organic disease, yet when he heard the call of the President, he stepped into the ranks to the music of "Three hundred thousand more," not in the spirit of bravado which so many exhibit under such circumstances, but quietly and manfully, under the stern pressure of a consciousness of duty to his country, and fidelity to his God. He braved the dangers on the battle fields of Perryville and Murfreesboro, and met the perils which always surround the soldier in an enemy's country, with cool courage and christian fortitude. He was promoted for general good conduct, receiving a sergeant's warrant but a few days before his death. Educated, energetic, industrious, with high toned principles and irreproachable habits, his death is a loss to the community, but more so to the service which needs the support of just such men. More than one of our readers have perused the stirring letters from the 21st regiment signed M.H., which have from time to time appeared in the columns of our paper, but some of them will require to be told that they were the production of the subject of this sketch. A short time since, by special arrangement he became connected with the Tribune as one of its regular correspondents, and though the demands upon his time were such that he was unable to furnish us weekly letters direct, he gave directions by which we were able to secure extracts from his private correspondence with his friends, and thus kept up the connection to the date of his death. From his letter in last week's issue, we quote the following sublime passage: "S-M- died in Italy. How much I would prefer to bleach on the battle field, slain in my country's cause, than to die in Naples, away from my native land in this hour of her peril when my strength, money and influence are so much needed." Noble sentiment!-worthy to be recorded among the dying expressions of patriots and philanthropists. He fell dead at the camp fire while thinking over the loving words which he desired to commit to paper for the perusal of the loved ones at home; but his death upon the battle field could not have been more glorious, for his life was a sacrifice to his sense of duty. Mr. Holmes was Sup't of the Sabbath School of the 1st Pres. Church, and while acting in that capacity, was faithful and earnest in his efforts to build up a model school; and the institution is one which will be an enduring monument of his perseverance and unselfish devotion to the ca?so of right. We need not ask our citizens to show every respect to the remains of the brave young citizen soldier, for all are eager to show their appreciation of his worth, and their sympathy with the mourning friends.
