CHARLES W. HEJDA (d. 1941) CHARLES HEJDA DIES SUDDENLY AT HOME HERE Prominent In Real Estate And Insurance Fields; Funeral To Be Monday Charles W. Hejda, 59, vice-president of the Lindstedt-Hoffman Company, real estate and insurance firm, and prominent in the insurance field here since 1924, died suddenly Thursday evening at his home, 844 Lincoln boulevard. Mr. Hejda had been active yesterday with his regular routine of duties as insurance engineer. Shortly after four o’clock he was stricken with an attack of acute indigestion. He visited a physician’s office, and later was moved to his home where his death occurred three hours later. Son is Contacted First thought of Mrs. Hejda following the death of her husband was contact their only son, Charles, a mining engineer for the Tambis Gold Dredging Company on Mindanao island of the Philippine group. Mr. Hejda has a short wave radio set up in his basement which he used to communicate with his son in the far off Phillippines. Atmospheric conditions last night, however, were so bad it was not possible to make contact. This morning the son was reached by long distance phone to San Francisco and short- wave telephone across the Pacific ocean to the Phillippines. The son and his wife talked with his mother for several minutes and it was decided that they would not attempt to return to Manitowoc at present. Even a trip by Clipper plane would require days. The son advised his mother he would postpone his trip to the States until he can secure a several months leave. Although never holding public office, Mr. Hejda has been active in the industrial advancement of Manitowoc. He has been on the Industrial Committee of the Chamber of Commerce, serving as chairman the past year, and was prominent in drives to bring new industries to Manitowoc, foster and aid Manitowoc plants needing help, and in recent months has been active in the work of the Manitowoc Defense Council of which he was secretary. As an insurance engineer of first rank he handled this branch of the work at the Lindsted-Hoffman Company and also specialized in automobile and casualty insurance. Funeral Monday. Funeral services for Mr. Hejda will be held Monday at 8;30 a.m. from the home and at nine o’clock from the Sacred Heart church, the Rev. Louis Schorn officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. Mr. Hejda was born in this city May 1, 1882 the son of Mr. and Mrs. William Hejda. He attended the north side schools and later enrolled at the University of Wisconsin from where he was graduated in 1902. He located at Oak Park, Ill., where he engaged in the insurance business. There he married Miss May Gibbon in 1907. Specializing in fire insurance, he became chief insurer of the Chicago Fire Prevention Bureau. After several years in Chicago Mr. Hejda moved to Milwaukee where for two years he was state engineer for the Hartford Fire Insurance Company. In 1924 he returned to Manitowoc and joined the Lindstedt-Hoffman Company, following the retirement of the late Julius Lindsted from the firm. He served several terms on the Executive Committee of the Wisconsin Association of Insurance Agents. Mr. Hejda was one of the charter members of the Manitowoc insurance Board and served two terms as president. He was also a member of the National Fire Protective Assoc- iation and the Blue Goose, a fraternal organization of insurance men. Active in Civic Affairs He was active in various advancement associations in Manitowoc, dating back to the old Merchants Association which later became the Merchants and Manufacturers Association. He was on the committee that drafted the new constitution and bylaws of the Manitowoc Chamber of Commerce. In the selection of the important Industrial Committee of that group, Mr. Hehda was chosen a member and was chairman of the committee at his death. He was one of the prime movers in the drive that brought the White House Milk Company and the Kieckhefer Container Corporation to Manitowoc. When the Manitowoc Defense Council was organized here a few months ago to coordinate the national program locally, he was named secretary. His fraternal and civic affiliations were many. He was a member of the Kiwanis club and served two terms as president. He was the first president of the local chapter of the Izaak Walton league. He joined the Elks lodge at Oak Park, Ill., serving through the various chair offices of that lodge, and when he returned to Manitowoc transferred to the Manitowoc lodge. He was also a member of the Holy Name Society of the Sacred Heart church and the Lakeside Country club. Survivors besides the widow and son are his aged parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Hejda, who made their home with the son. The elder Hedja, 81 years of age, enjoys fairly good health but the mother is in very poor health. The body will be moved to the Hejda home early Saturday evening from the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home. The rosary will be recited Sunday evening at 7 o’clock. THEODORE J. HELGERSON (d. 1976) Mechanical Mishap Kills Area Man, 24 A 24 year old Manitowoc man died Friday afternoon from injuries sustained in an accident involving machinery at Farmco Co-op at Francis Creek. Theodore J. Helgerson, of 1815A Clark St., a co-op employe, was pronounced dead on arrival at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, by Dr. John D. Best, at 2:30 p.m. Manitowoc County Coroner James E. Powers said the cause of death apparently was from asphyxiation due to the weight of the boom on Helgerson’s chest. The Manitowoc County Sheriff Traffic Dept. received a call from the co-op for assistance at 1:465 p.m. and ambulance and squad car were dispatched, Chief Deputy Sheriff Kenneth R. Nelesen said. It was found from the investigation that Helgerson was apparently on an uniloader, apparently standing between the frame of the machine and the boom. As he reached across the machine to make an adjustment he inadvertently tripped the machine’s boom control lever causing the boom to descend and pin him between it and the uniloader frame. In his attempts to free himself the reverse level was tripped and the machine began to back up. It traveled approximately 50 feet before coming to rest against the wall of the warehouse. (Continued on Page 2) Mechanical (Continued From Page 1) Helgerson was discovered there, still pinned in the machine, at approximately 1:40 p.m. by a fellow employe. Other employes summoned help and freed Helgerson from the machine. All attempts to revive him were unsuccessful. Herald Times Reporter, November 20, 1976 P. 2 ******* [son of Glenn J. and Lillian E. Herald Times Reporter, Tuesday, February 23, 1976 p.3 (sent in by researcher/see contributors page) ********** [aka Orrin C. Helgeson] ********** Corp. Conrad Helgeson Has Eight Battle Stars Conrad Helgeson, whose military service took him to eight different countries, still contends that the United States, Wisconsin, and home are best of all. He has arrived home from overseas, receiving his honorable discharge at Fort Sheridan on September 22nd. He has mentioned the primitive condition of the peoples of many of these countries with the oxen still used in much farm work. Conrad came through with eight battle stars, and eight campaigns during those thirty two months overseas without being wounded once. However, he did suffer four attacks of malaria. It was on June 24, 1942, that he entered service with his training beginning at Fort Bragg, Noth Carolina. He was later sent to Fort Meade, Maryland. On February 7, 1943, he left for overseas, going then to North Africa. He was at Casablanca, the Tunisian Campaign, participated in the Sicilian landing, was at Salerno, lower Italy, across the Volturno River up to the Casino front. They then moved back to prepare for the Anzio landing. He was at the Anzio Beachhead for four months and while there saw Russell Glasow, the only Valders or county soldier he met in his entire army service. While in this area he went to Rome and there visited the Vatican and saw the Pope. His group was then moved back to lower Italy to prepare for the invasion of southern France. They fought through southern France up to Strasbourg on the Rhine. They were then pulled down to the Colmar pocket, and here were cited with the Croix de Guerre by the Fench government and the U.S. Presidential citation. They then went into the Siegfried line, went through to Augsburg, Munich, Salsburg, Austria and were there when the war ended. Conrad enjoyed much going through Hitler’s noted hideaway, Berchesgarten. He was then with the troops of occupation in Austria during May, June and July. Transfer then came to Melsungen, Germany, where the troops remained for several weeks. Having enough points at this time he was transferred to the 69th homeward bound division. They left Le Havre, France, on September 7th and with a little stormy weather docked in New York seven days later. The usual time for the trip is six days. Conrad was in communications - radio - and then drove for the general of his artillary divison. When this general was transferred to the states he drove for the colonel of the division artillary. The strong ties that hold and bind together a group of fighting men was evidenced when Conrad suffered his first attack of malaria. This was at the time of the Sicilian campaign, and while he was still in the hospital, he learned his division (the noted 3rd) was to go into action - so Conrad secured his hospital release and rejoined his group. Twice when malaria attacks recurred he took treatment in his own unit in order to stay with his group. Conrad has the Good Conduct Medal, Distinguished Unit Badge, Croix do Guerre, Theatre ribbons, Bronze Service Arrowhead, 5 overseas bars, 1 Service stripe and the Driver and Mechanic’s Badge. He has eight battle stars, showing participation in the Tunisian campaign, Sicilain campaign, Naples Foggia; Rome-Arno; Southern France; Colmar; Rhineland and Central Europe. The engagement of Miss Doris Vetting to this young Valders soldier was announced by Miss Vetting’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walter Vetting on April 5, 1942, and now with Conrad’s return the couple is planning their marriage for October 24th. JAMES HELMINIAK Elderly Man Is Hurt, Dies A minor altercation between two elderly men resulted in the death of one of them Sunday night. Police told this story: James Helminiak, 72, who lived in an apartment at 15th and Clark streets, was sitting on the porch of the rooming house Friday afternoon between 4 and 5 p.m. talking to another roomer when Peter Dryll, 65, who also rooms there, approached the house. Dryll said that when he came down from his room later Helminiak was again sitting on the porch and said nothing. Later that evening, however, Helminiak complained of pains in his leg and was taken to Holy Family Hospital where it was found that he was suffering from a fractured hip. Manitowoc Herald Times, June 2, 1933 P. 6 ******** [Gust/bur. 06-03-1933/age 44 yrs/died LaCrosse, WI/ cause: surgical shock following resection stomach ulcer] ******** PRESSED INTO GERMAN NAVY Gustaf Helwich, a native of Germany, left Manitowoc in 1914 to visit his parents in the old country. He stuck around too long. He was invited to accept a post in one of the Kaiser's battleships, but he assured the authorities that he had but little taste for the life on the ocean wave. He failed to impress them but they impressed him. They insisted that he would surely enjoy the experience and finally prevailed upon him with the aid of a bayonet, to get aboard. As he was a German subject, this was all according to Hoyle. While enjoying his sojourn on a battleship he was a participant in several little misunderstandings with the British navy in the North Sea, among them the affair off Jutland, when about 100 ships were exchanging greetings. This was his earliest opportunity to get back to America and he is going to re-enter the draying business with his brother, Oscar here. He has had enough of the life of a jolly tar on the bounding billows to last an ordinary life time. He gives a good description of present conditions in Germany, his main complaint being the continuous of war time regulations of personal affairs and conduct. ELIZEBETH HEMPTON News article James Hempton, aged forty-six, shot and killed his wife at their home at Manitowoc, Wednesday. The woman was his second wife, and quarrels had been frequent until she had been driven to leave her husband and apply for a divorce. Hempton sent for her and when she called to see him he fired several bullets into her body and then sent a ball against his own head but it glanced off. Hempton is in jail. Daily Northwestern, Oshkosh, July 28, 1898 ******** The city was startled and shocked late yesterday afternoon by the news of a shooting tragedy at the home of James L. Hempton on N. 6th St. Hempton and his wife had been having trouble for several months and it culminated in a terrible quarrel yesterday, in which Hempton shot and instantly killed his wife and attempted to kill himself. His wound is in his head but does not at present seem to be dangerous. He is a man of violent temper and has frequently made serious threats against persons with whom he has had trouble. His morose nature has been intensified by heavy drinking at intervals for several years, and he has frequently terrified the neighbors by his outbreaks. Mrs. Hempton was his second wife. She had succeeded in getting along fairly well with him until last winter, when he began to abuse her and she started an action for divorce. This seemed to bring Hempton to time and he promised reformation and deeded the home to his wife. They lived together in comparative peace until a few weeks ago when he began to go on periodical drunks. He frequently made threats against his wife and cruelly misused her because she refused to deed back the homestead to him. She finally left the house and again began suit for divorce. Yesterday morning she went to the house with a friend to get some of the personal property that belonged to her. Hempton was there at the time. There was no particular incident, and she returned to her brother's house where she had been staying. About 5 o'clock Hempton sent for her and she went over the house alone. They met in the parlor. The broken furniture and horrible blood stains in the room indicate that Hempton beat her into helplessness before he shot her. The revolver was placed close against the temple when fired as powder burns indicate. Hempton then fired a glancing shot into his own head but without causing a serious wound. He was immediately taken into custody. He talked quite freely at the jail and said that he didn't mean to kill his wife but only "shoot her a few times and then kill himself." A jury was empanelled consisting of C.A. Cary, P.S. Tillson, J.L. Miller, E Kumbach, H.L. Hallock and Jos Krainik, who viewed the testimony of witnesses before Justice Markham. The witnesses called were Ella and Edna Hempton, the little daughters of the man who fired the shots; Elizabeth Hempton, his sister, who has been keeping house for him; policeman Carle, who took him into custody; and Dr. J.F. Pritchard. Dr Pritchard's testimony was that from his examination of the dead woman's injuries he considered that death was caused by a gunshot wound in the right temple. The jury so found. Hempton, a Manitowoc man has been given his freedom from the Northern Hospital for Insane at Oshkosh where he has been confined for nine years and left the institution in company of his son to make his home with him. Under the law, Hempton, after two years, cannot be returned to the asylum without a recommitment based upon finding a physician that he is insane. Notice of the release of Hempton by the state board of control has been received by Judge Chloupek in probate court. The notice states the fact that the patient has been paroled and has departed to make his home with a son, no place of residence being given. Hempton was committed to the Northern Asylum in March, 1902 upon an order of Judge Hastings in the Brown County circuit court at Green Bay where a hearing was held under a change of venue. Hempton was committed to the Northern Hospital upon a second hearing of the case in which he faced a charge of wife murder, the Supreme Court having granted a new trial to Hempton upon an appeal that his conviction in circuit court here. Hempton set up the insanity plea in the first trial and after the jury found him sane, he was convicted of first degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment at Waupun. An appeal was taken to the Supreme Court and after Hempton had served one year at Waupun, the highest court ordered a new trial in his case and the case was taken to Brown County on a change of venue when Hempton's attorney, the late G.G. Sedgwick filed an affidavit of prejudice in the local court. Domestic troubles which it was said at the time would be followed by a divorce led to the murder of Mrs. Hempton in the early 90's. Hempton, it was said, was addicted to liquor and his wife had determined to leave him. On the day of the murder, Hempton was said to have been drinking and returned home late in the afternoon and with his wife, was engaged upon making a division of the household property when he is alleged to have fired a shot from a revolver into his wife's body. Mrs. Hempton died almost instantly. Hempton was arrested, making no attempt to escape. A plea of insanity was entered in Hemton's defense in the trial of the case here but the jury found him sane and he was convicted of murder in the first degree and sentenced to imprisonment for life. On appeal to the Supreme Court a new trial was ordered and Hempton's attorney filed an affidavit of prejudice stating that prejudice against the prisoner would make it impossible to secure fair trial and the court sent the case to Brown County. Hempton, during all the proceedings in court at Green Bay, sat in his chair without a move or even when the jury returned its verdict to find him insane, he gave no indication that he grasped the importance of the verdict. After Hempton's commitment to the Oshkosh asylum, several attempts were made to secure his release but without success it being said that Dr. Gordon died a year ago and Hempton renewed his efforts and has secured parole it is said that Hemtpon is with his son, William Hempton at Medford, this state. The Hempton case is one of the noted cases in criminal annals of Manitowoc County and attracted interest throughout the state. Hempton is now a man past 50 years of age. WILHELM H. HEMSCHEMEYER Death on Sun., after a long and difficult illness, of Capt. Wilhelm H. Hemschemeyer. He was born 19 May 1835 in Stolzenau, Hanover, and traveled to America with his parents in 1848. The family settled on a farm in our county and he later came to Manitowoc City to establish a business. When the Civil War broke out Mr. Hemschemeyer joined up with the 26th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, and participated with the Unit in a large number of battles. He advanced through the ranks and ended up as a captain and was mustered out with his regiment in 1865. He returned to business and subsequently entered the hotel business, most recently with the hotel at Silver Lake. For health reasons he had to give up the hotel and return to Manitowoc. He suffered from rheumatism that gradually confined him until he had to be admitted to the hospital Dec. of last year where he remained until his death. He suffered such unspeakable pain that his death may be considered a release. He is known locally as an excellent businessman, served twice as a member of the Legislature, as recorder of documents, and relief collector. On 20 Aug. 1856, he married Wilhelmine Storch, his surviving widow. His marriage produced one son and 2 daughters, all of whom are deceased. He has one sister still living. The old campaigner was buried yesterday afternoon with participation of the G.A.R. Post, the Rankin Guard, and a host of mourners. Der Nord Westen, 22 Nov. 1894 ********* [Wilhelm H. In 1852 he engaged in business, in which he operated until the second call of the President for troops in the first year of the civil war. August 21, 1862, he enlisted in Company F, 26th Wisconsin Infantry, at Manitowoc for three years. He passed through the several non-commissioned grades and was commissioned 1st Lieutenant of Company I of the same command, April 13, 1864. Oct. 19th of the same year he was promoted to the Captaincy of Company I and was mustered out as such. He was in the first regiment raised for Sigel’s command in Wisconsin and left the State for Washington, October 6th. He was in the movements to Gainesville, and afterwards to Falmouth, and did not miss the “Mud Campaign” at a later date. He was in the disastrous battle of Chancellorsville, fought afterwards at Gettysburg, and went with the command to join the troops in the West and was in the action at Wauhatchie on the Tennessee. He fought at Mission Ridge and went thence to Knoxville and back to Lookout, and in May was in the reconnoissance and skirmishing at Buzzard Roost. He was in the fight at Averysboro in March and was under fire at Bentonville, three days later, going thence to Goldsboro and Raleigh, where the command delayed until the surrender of General Johnston, when he again took up the line of march and journeyed for weary days through heat and dust to Washington, where he was a participant in the Grand Review. The regiment left Washington June 13th and reached Milwaukee on the 17th, where it was welcomed by the German citizens, and was soon after paid off and discharged. After his return home Mr. Hemschemeyer was engaged in the sale of groceries and afterward in the management of a hotel in which he was occupied 10 years. In 1886 he opened a hotel at Silver Lake, four miles from Manitowoc, at a point which is rapidly becoming noted and popular as a summer resort. He took part in the battles of Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, Lookout Valley, Lookout Mountain, Lot Mountain, Peach Tree Creek, Atlanta, Savannah, Averasborough and Bentonville. By use of the pulmotor the life of Wilhelmina Henschemeyer, an aged resident of the city whose home is at 531 North Fifth Street, was probably saved today when Mrs. Henschemeyer was found unconscious in her home as a result of having been overcome by gas. Mr. Henschemeyer was revived by use of the pulmotor and will recover. It was planned to remove Mrs. Henschemeyer to the hospital this afternoon. Mrs. Henschemeyer occupied the downstairs flat of the home at 531 N. Fifth Street, living alone. The aged woman had made it a practice to inform neighbors when she left her home for an absence of any length and when it was found that the family residing upstairs had not heard her about the house the past two days, it was decided to investigate. Mrs. W.W. Delano, who resided next door visited the flat but found the door locked. It was discovered, however, that the key was in the lock on the inside and an attempt was made to force the door but without success. The presence of Mrs. Henschemeyer's cat in the house and the fact that they key was in the lock made it certain that the occupant was in the rooms and the police department was notified and asked to investigate. Officer Charles Dueno visited the house and another attempt was made to force the door and when this failed a panel was cut from it to afford a chance to reach the key on the inside and the door was opened. The house was found to be filled with gas, the odor being so strong that Officer Dueno and others with him were unable to enter the place until the door had been left open for some time. Entering the house the rescuers found Mrs. Henschemeyer unconscious in her bed but still breathing. The woman had evidently made an attempt to leave her bed, the position of the body indicating this, but she had been too dazed to accomplish her purpose. Report of the matter was immediately made to police headquarters with request that a physician be dispatched with the pulmotor at once and Chief Groffman, accompanied by Dr. Staehle responded in a few minutes and after a short time Mrs. Henschemeyer was revived and it is believed will suffer no ill effects from her experience. It was advised that the woman be removed to the hospital until she fully recovers but she may object to this plan. Had not the plight of Mrs. Henschemeyer been discovered this morning it is probable that death would have ensued in a short time as the woman was completely overcome by the gas and was in very feeble condition. Mrs. Henschemeyer is a woman of advanced age. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Nov. 6, 1913
