AMELIA HANSON (d. 1923) DIES AS BODY OF DEAD BROTHER IS LAID TO REST Miss Amelia Hanson Gets Summons as Funeral Near Grief over the death of her brother, coupled with the excitement of attending a funeral which she herself was too ill to attend, proved too much of a strain upon a system whose vitality had been snapped by an insidious disease today and Miss Amelia Hanson, Huron street, succumbed to a fatal attack shortly after noon. Miss Hanson’s death occurred as the members of the family were leaving to attend the funeral of her brother Elton Hanson whose death occurred at Maple Crest sanitorium Friday afternoon, the service for the latter being held from the Williamson home on North Fifth street. The double tragedy in the home has greatly affected Mr. and Mrs. Louis Hanson, parents of the two and Mrs. Hanson is this afternoon under care of physicians. The death of Miss Hanson and the tragic circumstances attending it are inexpress- ibly sad. Scarcely twenty-one years of age Miss Hanson is cut down at the very threshold of life’s possibilities. She graduated from the local High school three years ago and suffered an attack of illness some months ago, the effects of which she was unable to throw off. For some time her condition had caused apprehension and following the death of her brother a few days ago her condition became aggravated although it was not considered serious. Miss Hanson passed a restless night last night but seemed to regain her composure this morning and was thought to be out of danger when the sudden collapse which caused death came. Announcement a Shock The announcement of the death of Miss Hanson was a great shock to friends of the family. She is survived by three brothers, Raymond, Ludwig and Walton and two sisters, Ethel and Harriet. Manitowoc Herald News, August 7, 1923 P. 1 ******** Funeral of Miss Hanson Tomorrow Funeral services for Miss Amelia Hanson, who died suddenly yesterday afternoon while the family was preparing to attend the funeral of her brother Elton Hanson who died last Friday afternoon will be held tomorrow afternoon with services at the home at 1:30 and at the First Lutheran church at 2:00, the Rev. BENJAMIN H. HANSON (d. 1961) Captain Hanson Retired Skipper Dies at Age 78 Capt. Benjamin H. Hanson, 78, who captained the Ann Arbor Railroad carferry Wabash and who had been sailing the Great Lakes since 17, died Monday evening at Manitowoc County Hospital. He had been ill two weeks. Captain Hanson, rapidly becoming a legend in Great Lakes marine circles, resided at 423 N. Fifth St. He retired as captain of the ferry line’s flagship in June of 1949 and even though he was on pension, Captain Hanson found opportunity to talk about the “good old days.” He was named skipper of the ship late in September of 1940. He previously had captained the AA No. 7 and this was the first time a Manitowoc man had been elevated to the post of commodore since the Ann Arbor ferry line started operations in the Great Lakes. Born in Ohio Captain Hanson was born at Barnsville, Ohio, May 4, 1883, son of the late Benjamin and Lucinda Bundy Hanson. He came to Wisconsin when 7 with his mother. They lived at Fond du Lac where he acquired his formal education. When 17 he became a deck hand aboard AA No. 3, shipping out of Menominee, Mich. For a number of years he worked the lower lakes during the summer months and returned to ferry service in the winter, all the while working for his master’s license. He married Hattie Holtz at Milwaukee Dec. 14, 1912, and the couple established residence at Manitowoc. In 1913, he gained his rights as a master for the Ann Arbor Line and also received his unlimited master’s license. He assumed command of the Ann Arbor No. 3 three years later and for 24 years he served as its master as well as the Nos. 4, 6, and 7 at various periods. Free of Accidents Captain Hanson estimated at the time of retirement he had traveled about 3,150,000 miles on water and in the 49 years he had never had a serious accident. Surviving are his wife, a brother, Caleb Hanson, of Milwaukee and a sister, Mrs. Mary Rouse, of Silver Springs, Md. He was a member of Grand Haven, Mich., Lodge 139, F and AM, Manistee, Mich., Commandery 32, Knights Templar, and Saladin Temple, Grand Rapids, Mich. And the marvel of it is that Hansen escaped almost without injury. Hansen was employed on carferry No. 3 of the Ann Arbor line and while about his work on the boat had his foot caught and a train of cars which was being unloaded, passed over the foot which, strange to relate, was not severed, though somewhat crushed. A new pair of shoes, on which heavy soles had been placed, probably saved Hansen's foot if not his life. The shoes show where the flange of car cut into the leather crushed the foot but it was found that no bones had been broken. Hansen was taken to the hospital where an x-ray examination showed the foot intact with no fracture of bones and Hansen is improving rapidly. He is 32 and married. Yards and an office were established here and in 1903 a branch was organized at Two Rivers. In later years the company's business centered at Two Rivers, where yards and an office are maintained on 12th street. Advancing years forced Capt. BABE'S ACT STARTS FIRE
Light Globe Wrapped in Bed Covering Threatens Serious Blaze
A lighted electric light globe which had been wrapped in the coverings of a bed by a small son of Halvor Hansen, St. Clair Street, came near to causing the destruction of the home by fire, the bed spread and sheets having been ignited before the globe was uncovered. The boy, a toddling babe, played in an upstairs room of the home and had placed the electric globe under the bed clothing and left it and it was only the merest accident that saved the house from destruction. Mrs. Hanson visited the room to raise a window, noticed the smell of burning cloth and investigated, discovering the globe after it had set fire to and had burned almost through a part of the spread and the mattress had been blackened. In a very short time the fire would have burned through the spread and to the mattress and fanned by the air, would have become a blaze, which, with the inflamable material to feed it, could have been a serious fire and one which it would have been a hard matter to subdue and extinguish and the home would have sustained heavy loss.

JOHN HANSON DEATH ENDS TROUBLES “Fisherman” John Hanson’s Sad Life Story has Finis Written to it LIVED A LONELY EXISTENCE Home was a Hut on Lake Front—Robbed of Savings of Years, the Sorrow Killed Him—82 Years of Age Death ended the troubles of aged John Hansen(sic) today and brought to a close the life that had been marked by lonely existence and sad experience for many years. During the past three years he had been cared for at St. Mary’s hospital and it was there that the message of deliverance came at an early hour this morning. The death of Hansen can be attributed indirectly to sorrow over the loss of his savings of which he was robbed three years ago, by unknown persons who entered his hut at the lake front and after having beaten him to insensibility and left him for dead, ransacked the place, carrying away the little horde of wealth which he had secreted in a trunk. Found bound to his bed the next morning, the unfortunate man was removed to the hospital and since that time has never recovered. Within the past few months he has been able to be about, but continually brooding over his loss had weakened his mind and he was almost helpless when death released him. Hansen had been a resident of the city for forty six years and lived the life of a recluse, making his home in a small hut on the lake front at the foot of Chicago street until the time of the assault and robbery. He was engaged in fishing and had accumulated a sum of money with which he had planned to return to his native land, there to spend his reclining days. On the night of January 13 the hut was entered the inmate assaulted, bound to his cot and left for dead, and a trunk in which the money was secreted robbed. Passerby the next morning noticed a blood stained cloth tied to the door and an investigation revealed the aged man wounded and helpless on the bed. He recounted the story of the assault and robbery and although the police made every effort the perpetrators of the deed were never captured. Born at Barigan, Norway, 82 years ago, Hansen came to America in 1850 and located in Door county, coming here four years later. He refused to accept the overtures of friendship made and an air of mystery surrounded his entire life, until his advent to the hospital when he told a part of the story of his early career. Estranged from family and friends at home, he came to America and after years of hard work and saving was about to realize the ambition to return to his native land when cruel Fate intervened. Hansen has no known relatives and will be buried at the expense of the county. MAREN MADSEN SCOVE HANSON (d. 1882) Mrs. Jasper Hanson died at her residence in this city yesterday morning after a long continued and severe sickness. She came to this county about 24 years ago, having been preceded a couple of years by her husband. She raised quite a large family and was always as affectionate and indulgent mother. There are but few women who so fully enjoyed the respect and esteem of their neighbors as did Mr. Hanson. She was a woman of large charity which was ever active even when sickness banished pleasure from her life. There is genuine sorrow at her death among the many persons to whom she extended unselfish aid. MAREN HANSON (d. 1924) ONE OF PIONEER MOTHERS OF THE CITY PASSES ON Death of Mrs. Maren Hanson Occurs Today Mrs. Maren Hanson, one of the pioneer mothers of Manitowoc, passed away at her home, 624 Buffalo St., during the early morning hours Monday January 7th. The deceased was born at Gjerpen, Norway, September 22, 1837. Together with her parents, Nils Anderson and wife Turine, she came to the United States arriving at Manitowoc July 14, 1855. On November 15, 1857 she was united by marriage to Andrew Hanson, one of the well known wagon makers in Manitowoc in the early days. Their hospitable home became the center of many pleasant gatherings of the early settlers of Norwegian decent in this community. The husband died December 4, 1914 at the ripe age of 80 years. Since that time the wife has lived quietly at her home enjoying the visits of old friends and neighbors. In June 1922 she suffered a broken hip bone. She spent several weeks at the local hospital, but the fracture would not mend, and since that time she has been confined to her bed most of the time. Her daughter, Mrs. Martha C. Moe of Decorah, Ia., together with her son Adolph and his wife have during this time given her the most tender care. Member of First Lutheran The deceased and her family were loyal members of the First Lutheran church, and Mrs. Hanson was one of the charter members of th Ladies’ aid. She was a devoted Christian and a diligent student of the Scriptures, and when she could no longer read the good book herself, her daughter would daily read to her and lead her in prayer. During the last months her feebleness increased and since last Saturday she lay in a quiet slumber until death came. No struggle, no agony; her course was finished and the spirit returned to God. She leaves, besides her daughter and son mentioned above a son, Martin at Sturgeon Bay, and Thorval at Los Angeles, Calif., also nine grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held from the home Wednesday, January 9, at 1:30 and from the First Lutheran church at 2:00 p.m. , the services to be conducted by the pastor, D. G. Ristad. Ole Hansen (sic), a well known resident of the city, was overtaken by death, a sudden attack of heart failure causing his demise within a few minutes of the time he was stricken. Capt. Hansen (sic) was accompanied by George Tremmel and the two had neared the residence which both occupied, conversing on the way and when Tremmel received no response to one of his questions, he turned to discover his companion on the ground, gasping for breath and apparently in dying condition. Hansen (sic) was a shock to family and friends. Born in Norway July 26, 1845, Capt. Hansen (sic) was 66 years of age at the time of his death and had resided here since 1867?. From the time of his residence here Capt. Hansen (sic) had followed the lakes and last summer was sailing on the schooner Slauson, of which he was part owner, with Capt. Larson. Owing to illness, Capt. Hanson did not complete the season’s sailing but returned home some time ago. He was not seriously ill and there was no apprehension felt by family and friends. Saturday he had been about as usual and in the evening with a party of friends, had attended a social and was among the gayest of the gay. Heart failure is given as the cause of death. Capt. SAMUEL HANSON (d. 1915) FORMER LOCAL MAN MAY HAVE BEEN MURDERED SAMUEL HANSEN(sic), KILLED AT VIRGINIA, MINN. MAY HAVE BEEN VICTIM OF POT HUNTERS. WAS GAME WARDEN Samuel Hansen, a former Manitowoc man, whose death is reported from Virginia, Minn., in messages which reached relatives here last night, may, it is believed, have been a victim of pot hunters while performing his duties as a game warden at that place. No details of Mr. Hanson’s death were given in the message, further than that he had drowned. News of the death of Mr. Hansen came from Frank Klabachek, a former Reedsville man who was formerly associated in business with the dead man, Klabacheck was formerly employed by M. H. Dempsey in this city. Mr. Hansen was about 30 years of age and unmarried. He left here some years ago and located at Chicago and later removed to Minnesota. He had been appointed a game warden in that state and friends here say that in discharge of his duty he had aroused the enmity of pot hunters of the state in whose prosecution he had been active and they express the belief that unless Mr. Hansen’s death was purely accidental, which may have been the case, that he was a victim of foul play. Alvin Hansen, a brother of the dead man, departed for Minnesota today to take charge of the remains and the body will be taken to Sheboygan for burial, the family residing in that city. Mr. Hansen as a young man, was employed by the Schmidtman Sons’ company in this city and is remembered by many local people though it has been some years since he visited the city. ********* BODY OF SAM’L HANSEN(sic) TO BE BURIED HERE No Details of Death Learned But Was Probably An Accident The body of Samuel Hansen, the former Manitowoc man who met death at Virginia, Minn., will be brought to this city for burial, though no information as to the time of arrival of the body has been received. Alvin Hansen, a brother, is at Minnesota to take charge of the remains and it is possible that they may reach here tomorrow morning. No further details of the death of Mr. Hansen have been received but it is believed that it was an accident. The message said simply that Mr. Hansen had drowned and gave no details. Relatives say that they do not believe there is any truth in reports that Mr. Hansen may have been a victim of foul play. Mr. Hansen is survived by a widow and one son, aged 6. He was a good, kind, honest, industrious man. He was ever willing and ready to lend a helping hand to his fellowmen.
