AUGUST GLANDER Julius (August) Hermann Glander (b. 6 Sept 1859, d. 5 Sept 1899) August Glander Succumbs to Consumption— GLANDER.—August Glander died at nine o’clock this morning at his home on South Main street. He has been battling for many months with that dreaded disease, consumption (i.e., TB or tuberculosis—ed. B.M.L.), and at last slowly succumbed to its ravages. Deceased was born in Germany Sept. 6 1854 and came to this city eight years ago. For several years and until he was compelled to give up work he was employed at the brewery of The William Rahr Sons. He leaves a wife and six children to mourn his loss and his father and one brother also reside in the city. No funeral arrangements have yet been made. The sincere sympathy of the entire community is extended to the bereaved relatives in their sore affliction. —Manitowoc Daily Herald, Volume 1, Manitowoc, Wis., Tuesday, September 5, 1899, No. 273 ******** LAST SAD RITES—GLANDER. —The funeral services over the body of August Glander were held at the German Lutheran church at 2:30 o’clock yesterday afternoon. A large concourse of friends followed the funeral cortage to Evergreen cemetery where internment took place. Rev Machmueller conducted the services both at the church and at the grave, paying a touching tribute to the memory of the deceased. — Manitowoc Daily Herald, Volume 1, Manitowoc, Wis., Friday, September 8, 1899, No. 276 ******* —Heute Morgen starb Herr August (?lander) im Alter von 40 Jahren nach (?angerem) Kranksein. The deceased who was born on Sept. 6 1854 [should be 1859] in Germany came to Manitowoc about eight years ago and has lived here since then. He leaves behind a widow and six children as well as an aged father and a brother, all residing in Manitowoc. September 1899., Nummer 13. Manitowoc Post: Died. August Glander passed away at his home, no 1210 S. Main St., Tuesday morning as a result of a long illness. If he had lived until yesterday he would have reached the age of 40. It is a sad case, since his family is in needy circumstances, and he leaves behind his wife and six small children, the oldest of whom is barely 14. The deceased was born in Justin, near Plathe, Pomerania, and came to America with his family seven years ago, directly to Manitowoc. He was working at Rahr's Malting Factory until his health forced him quit working several months ago. Last year his unmarried brother died of the same disease at the age of 30. The funeral for the deceased is today at the Lutheran church, burial to follow at Evergreen Cemetery. Carmen Glander born ca 1914 in Manitowoc, Manitowoc County, WI; unknown to whom married or when died. ----------- Difficult family to trace. Since August Glander died so young, in the 1900 US Census, 3rd Ward, Manitowoc County, Clara is listed as age 37, widow, says mother of 5 children, but none of the children are living with her. They must have been living with other family members. In the 1910 US Census, Clara is listed in the 3rd Ward, Manitowoc, Manitowoc County, with Fred, Emil C., John, Hattie, William H. and Rose, along with brother John Radatz, widower, and Frederick Glander, age 80, father-in-law. In 1920, still 3-WD on S. 10th St., Clara is listed as Widow, born Pommerania, along with son Emil, age 32, William age 26, Hattie, age 28, and Rose, age 25. Hattie must have been born while on the ship, or on the way from Baltimore to Manitowoc, as she definitely was not born in Germany. Hattie Glander is the one who married John G. Strathearn (Strathearn family also buried in Cemetery #44 Evergreen). Although cemetery stones reflect that she was born in 1890, I believe it impossible, as she is not on the Ship manifest. I don't think she knew where or when she was born. In the 1930 US Census, 1210 S. 10th St., Clara Glander is listed as age 66, widow, along with son Emil Glander, age 42, with John G. Strathearn, son-in-law, listed as age 37; he is a mail carrier; along with Hattie, listed as age 39, and Joan Strathearn, grandchild, listed as age 1-8/12. John G. Strathearn married Hattie Glander ca 1924/1925. On this census, Hattie Glander Strathearn says that she emigrated 1893.

EDWARD GOETERS DEATH COMES TO RELIEF OF EDW. GOETERS Victim of Auto Injuries Six Years Ago, Invalid Since Then, Passes Away After being an invalid at his home for over six years, as a result of injuries suffered in an automobile accident in June of 1924, on Highway 141 a few miles south of the city, Edward Goeters, 49, foreman of the Central Iron Works here up to the time of the accident, passed away this morning at his home, 715 South Fifteenth street. Despite his afflicition which forced Mr. Goeters to remain in his home with spinal injuries he bore his affliction with fortitude and a cheerfulness that was remarkable, seeking to lighten the burdens of those whose care he became. To the very end he maintained a courage that was manifested in a spirit of resignation with the knowledge that his future was helpless. The accident on the highway which made an invalid of the deceased occurred when the Goeters car, which he was driving home from a Sheboygan visit collided with another machine containing a number of Goodrich boat hands enroute to Sheboygan. Mr. Goeters was crushed behind the steering wheel and was rushed to the hospital here. Later he was able to be removed to his home, but the nature of his injuries precluded all possibility of his ever regaining the full use of his limbs. In the past few days Mr. Goeters grew constantly weaker and the end came at six o'clock this morning. Came Here Learned Machinist Trade Born in the town of Manitowoc, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Herman Goeters, who still survive him, Mr. Goeters grew to manhood on the farm and when a young man of nineteen came to this city to learn the machinist trade at the Smalley Co. Later he entered the employ of the Central Iron Works, and rose to the positon of foreman of that company, which he occupied up to the time of the accident. Married In 1905 In 1905 he was married in this city to Miss Olga Mahler who survives him with one son, Norman, two sisters, Mrs. Julius Hecker, city and Mrs. William Neubert of Chicago and his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herman Goeters of the town of Manitowoc. Another son preceded his father in death a few months ago. Mr. Goeters was active in fraternal work in the city. He was a member of the Chickerming lodge, I.O.O.F. and also the Loyal Order of Moose. IDA GREEN RUN DOWN ON STREET, IS KILLED STRUCK BY AUTO IDA GREEN IS FATALLY HURT Accident At Washington and 15 Streets Results in Death of Victim Four Hours Later Manitowoc's constantly mounting toll of tragic deaths due to traffic conditions on city streets and county highways was added to late yesterday when Miss Ida Green, 57, sustained fatal injuries when struck by an automobile at the corner of Fifteenth and Washington streets, the accident occurring shortly after 5 o'clock. Death occurred at the Holy Family hospital at about 9:30 o'clock night. Victor Henry Menchl, 16 year old high school student, son of Henry Menchl, was the driver of the light coupe which struck Miss Green as she was walking across the west cross-walk, he reported to the authorities a few minutes after the accident. In his report to the police the driver declared that he was proceeding west on Washington street and said that after the car struck the woman she was dragged a distance of 10 or 12 feet and that the wheels of the car passed over her body. The driver was accompanied by his sister, Miss Mayme Menchl, and they were on their way to their home near Brown's Corners. Rushed to Hospital Immediately after the accident young Menchl brought his light coupe to a stop and assisted in removing the injured woman to the car of Olaf Christiansen, 1217 South Fifteenth street and Mr. Christiansen and Clarence Tomchek, 2003 Madison street, took her to the hospital. Shortly after arrival at the hospital, X-ray pictures were taken to determine the full extent of her injuries but she died before the pictures were developed. County authorities late this morning were conferring regarding the holding of an inquest but made no definite announcement although they were practically certain that one would be hld in the near future. Driver Not Held Young Menchl reported the accident at police headquarters only a few minutes after it occurred and was not held by police. He will be expected to give his testimony when the inquest is held. Owing to the force of the blow, the mechanism of the light machine was impaired and the car was taken to a garage for repairs before it could be driven away. Was Walking Alone Miss Green, for the past three years employed in the plant of the Aluminum Goods Manufacturing company here, was one of a large number of employes crossing the street at the time the accident occurred. She was alone on the crosswalk at the time although other members of the plant force were in front and to the rear of her. When the driver reported the accidnt to the police, he said the woman was dragged along for a distance of 10 or 12 feet but reports of others arriving at the scene soon after the accident said that the woman had been carried to the left side of the street for a greater distance. Born in Manitowoc Miss Green was born in Manitowoc on February 11, 1872 but spent most of her life in Milwaukee. Living here until she was about 16 years of age, Miss Green went to Milwaukee and with the exception of seven months spent with a brother in California spent her life in that city until her return to Manitowoc three years ago. Since that time she has been employed in the wrapping department of the Aluminum Goods company. In addition to her sister, Miss Ruby Green, with whom she made her home at 1424 South Eleventh street, she is survived by one brother, William, also of this city. Funeral services will be held from the home at 1:30 o'clock Monday afternoon and the St. James Episcopal church at 2 o'clock, Father Hood officiating. Interment will take place at Evergreen cemetery.
