ANNA KINNEY GEHBE DEATH MARS YULETIDE AT GEHBE HOME Wife and Mother Is Called on Day. She Was 71 Years Death brought tragedy to the Yuletide season at the home of Frank Gehbe, Sr., Washington street when at 9 o’clock Christmas morning, death claimed the wife and mother, Anna Kinney Gehbe, her demise being unexpected as a family gathering on Christmas eve she had appeared in better health than for many weeks. Mrs. Gehbe had been a sufferer for a long time and had submitted to an operation and while her health had been poor, there was no thought that death was near and the shock was great. Funeral services for Mrs. Gehbe will be held at St. Boniface church tomorrow morning with the Rev. Kersten officiating. Stricken During Night Mrs. Gehbe, who had suffered the misfortune of blindness in one eye as result of a cataract some time ago was taken suddenly ill during the night after the reunion of the family at the home Monday evening. Her condition became serious at 3 and the family was called but she could be given no relief, her death coming at 9 in the morning. Death was due to old age. Died on Birthday Mrs. Gehbe’s death occurred on the date that marked her seventy-first birthday— Christmas Day—she having been born in Ireland December 25, 1852. She came to America in 1860, the family locating in Chicago and in 1871 removed there. Mrs. Gehbe was married in 1874 and for many years the family resided at Clarks Mills and for the past fifteen years or more, in this city, Mr. Gehbe having been engaged in the hotel business both at Clarks Mills and in this city. Besides her husband, Mrs. Gehbe is survived by six children, Mrs. Guy Millar, this city; Mrs. Clifford Niles, Gladstone, Ore., Mrs. Oscar Burley and Mrs. William Culliton of Chicago, Dr. Frank Gehbe, this city and Dr. George A. AUGUST GEHBE (d. 1892) The dead body of August Gehbe was taken from the river on Friday afternoon near the dock between the post office and Torrison's warehouse. The body was recovered by Benson Brothers who were dragging the river for it. They had a line with a hook and weighted with bricks. One of the bricks caught under an arm and the body was brought to the surface. The left hand was in the pants pocket thus evincing a determination to make no effort at self preservation or showing that he fell into the river in a stupor. The coroners' jury returned a verdict of accidental drowning there being no proof that suicide was contemplated. On Thursday evening Mr. and Mrs. Krummhener spent the evening with him until 9 o'clock. He was in much better humor than ordinarily, but complained, as he always did, of his inability to sleep. He urged his callers to extend their visit and after their departure remained in his shop until 10 o'clock that night. The morning following it was found he had not occupied his bed during the night and some alarm was at once felt for his safety. It was known that he had extreme fits of depression caused by ill health resulting from a wound he received at Gettysburg in the head and from an attack of the grip the results of which made it difficult for him to secure sound sleep. Besides he was losing his sight. One eye had gone totally blind and the other was failing. A search of the premises showed that $165 were in the cash drawer. He received a pension of $30 per month from the government and his little cigar store brought him in a small revenue. He was born in Germany in 1834. He served in the army of the rebellion for four years, having enlisted in Milwaukee and was a member of the famous Iron Brigade. He participated in a number of battles, notably those of Gettysburg and the Wilderness. In the former he was seriously wounded and his death occurred on the anniversary of that battle. This day always produced excitement in him as his ill health dated from that time and he often expressed the wish that he had been killed there. How he came to his death is a mystery. He must have been unconscious when he reached the water judging from his hand being in his pocket and the fact that his eyes were closed when the body was recovered. ELLA (SAVAGE) GEHBE (d. 1923) MANY FRIENDS MOURN DEATH OF MRS. GEHBE The sadness of death and keen sorrow of loss was brought home to many friends Thursday evening when the announcement of the demise of Mrs. Mary Ellen Gehbe, wife of Dr. Frank H. Gehbe, was made, Mrs. Gehbe's death occurring at the family home 1111 Huron street at 4 o'clock. While it was known to friends that her condition was critical and that hope of her recovery had been abandoned, the announcement that the end had come was a great shock. Mrs. Gehbe's death was primarily due to rheumatism from which she had suffered for a long time. Several months ago she departed for California in hope that the climate would benefit her but it was a futile hope and a month ago, realizing that the battle was a losing one, she planned to return home to be with her family when the end came. She arrived in the city last Friday and since that time had been confined to her bed, her condition critical, and death but a matter of time. Mrs. Gehbe accepted the inevitable with a brave spirit and resignation that had been characteristic of her long fight for health. The end came peacefully. Her husband, daughter and other relatives were at her beside when the end came. Native of Brown County. Mary Ellen Savage was born at Pittsfield, Brown county, February 5, 1875 and was a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Matt Savage. The family later removed to Glenmore and then locating at Cato, this county, where Mrs. Gehbe spent her girlhood days. For a year she taught school in Montanna and then took a special course in commercial work at Valpariaso, Ind., followed by a year spent as teacher in the commercial department of the Green Bay high school. On December 28, 1900 deceased was married to Dr. Frank H. Gehbe, then a resident of Clarks Mills, and soon after the couple came to this city where they have since resided. Mrs. Gehbe was a member of St. Boniface church and took an active interest in church work up to the time of her illness. She was a member of Eureka Review Women's Benefit association of the Maccabees in which organization she enjoyed a wide popularity. Mrs. Gehbe was a woman of strengh of character and brilliant accomplish- ments. She possessed a keen mind and was a student and while the serious side of life appealed most to her as a student, she was a delightful hostess and entertaining companion in social life. During the months of suffering which she underwent Mrs. Gehbe's true character was demonstrated and glorified and she endured with a courage that was remarkable. She was cheerful and despite her own sufferings, she was helpful and ready with sympathy for friends. Mother Accompanies Her Home Mrs. Gehbe was accompanied from California on her trip home by her mother, Mrs. Callsta Savage who was with her when death came. In the west Mrs. Gehbe was with daughter Mrs. Alfred Waterson at Bishop and her brother Hugh, of Concord. Mrs. Gehbe's condition became grave on Sunday when she seemed to suffer a collapse, due to fatigue of the journey and from that time to the end, there had been no hope held out. Besides her husband, Mrs. Gehbe is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Florence Watterson, of Bishop, Calif., and Miss Callsta, of this city, her mother Mrs. Savage, three sisters, Mrs. W.G. Morrisey, Reedsville, Mrs. C.L. Post, Centralia, Wash., and Mrs. L. Svacina of Grimms and by three brothers, Hugh Savage, of Concord, Calif., Stephen Savage of Green Bay and Dr. J.T. Savage, of this city. Funeral Held Tomorrow The funeral services will be held tomorrow morning from the home to Sacred Heart church at 9 o'clock, the Rev. W.J. Luby officiating. Burial will be at Evergree (sic) cemetery. Relatives here for the funeral are Green Bay, Dr. George Gehbe of Osh- Wauwautosa (sic), Mrs. Oscar Hurley of Chicago and Mrs. William Cullitan of Chicago, sisters of Dr. Gehbe. Geisler Injured by Knife in Hands of Second Boy Using a pocket knife as a weapon, Geo. Orchesky, a South Side boy, severely wounded Theodore Geisler, 14 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Geisler in an attack made in Washington Park Friday afternoon. The Geisler boy was struck in the left thigh and a gash four inches long and to the bone was cut in the leg. The wound will not prove dangerous unless blood poisoning develops which is always a danger in injuries of this kind. Geisler was attacked when he interfered to protect a younger companion from an assault by Orchusky when the latter had become angered at some act of Geisler’s companion. Orchusky drew his knife and made a vicious assault upon Geisler. The Orchusky boy was gathering leaves in the park when Geisler and his companion passed through and some remark angered Orchusky(sic) who made the attack upon the younger boy and when Geisler interfered turned upon the latter. Boys in the park gave chase to Orchusky who is said to have been at the Industrial school for some time and to have been paroled. Later the boy was taken into custody and is said to have admitted the assault and if possible he will be sent back to the Industrial school. Orchusky is 15 years of age. Geisler is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Louis Geisler, So. Thirteenth St. and was taken to his home. The boy suffered from loss of blood from the wound.
