ELTON CHAUNCEY GIBSON Elton C. Gibson, One Of First 3 City Mail Carriers, Passes Away VETEREAN OF CITY CARRIER ROUTES DIES Retired From Service in 1923; Born at Branch and Spent Entire Life in County Elton C. Gibson, 75, one of the trio of letter carriers in Uncle Sam's service who took out the first city routes in Manitowoc, in 1893, when city free delivery was established here and who retired on a pension in 1923, died last night at his home, 618 North Sixth street. He has been in failing health for the past three months, but was able to be up and about until a couple of days before his demise. Mr. Gibson, a resident of Manitowoc county since his birth and of this city since a lad of ten, was a mail carrier for over thirty years. He with Fred Rockhoff and Richard Rudolph were appointed the first city carriers here March 18, 1893, when the city carrier routes were established. He covered the entire north side of the city, the other two having their rounds on the south and west sides. Mr. Rockhoff is now retired from the government service, because of failing health while Mr. Rudolph, the third member of the pioneer letter carriers of Manitowoc, is still in the service. Funeral Services Friday Funeral services for Mr. Gibson will probably be held Friday afternoon from the St. Pauls. M.E. church, of which he has been a member for some fifty years and of which congregation he was trustee at the time of his death. Definite arrangements are awaiting the arrival here of his only brother, Eldridge K. Gibson, of Stillwell, Kansas, who is motoring here with his wife and son for the funeral. The deceased was born at Branch 75 years ago, the son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Gibson, pioneer county residents. The family removed to this city to reside when the deceased was a young man of ten years, his father engaging in the flour and feed business here. He completed his education in the schools of the city, took a business college course and was engaged in business with his father for a few years. He took the civil service examination for letter carrier in the early nineties and was appointed, and entered on his duties March 18, 1893. Resided with Cousin Mr. Gibson never married. For the past 22 years he has made his home with his cousin, Mrs. Alice Harrison, at the old Gibson homestead on North Sixth street, which was the family home for over three score years. Mr. Gibson was devoted to his church and never held public office except for serving for a number of years on the Second ward election board. As the postal service grew in Manitowoc Mr. Gibson's route was gradually reduced until his territory covered a section in the Second ward. He retired Jan. 25, 1923, having reached the age limit. Since then he has lived a retired life. One brother Eldridge K. Gibson of Stillwell, Kansas, and his cousin, Mrs. Harrison, are Mr. Gibson's sole survivors. Manitowoc Herald News, Manitowoc, Wis.
