In that connection the Rex hotel, fronting on Eighth street, was also erected. The theater was completed in 1921 and leased to Ascher brothers, Chicago, operators of a chain of theaters in Illinois and Wisconsin. LILLIAN GEORGE FATALLY INJURED IN CRASH AT SHEBOYGAN (continued from page 1) …recovers sufficiently to be able to testify. Finst was released on his own cognizance. 4pm Saturday. The accident occurred about 4pm Saturday at Virginia avenue and South Water street in the factory district of Sheboygan. The party had made a trip to Madison, leaving Friday morning and was returning to Manitowoc when the accident occurred. Mr. George was driving slowly and carefully, according to Miss Teporten. It was raining and the occupants of the car wiped the windshield and windows carefully at frequent intervals in order that the vision of the driver might not be impaired. Reports of the accident said Mr. George took a short-cut through the factory district in passing through Sheboygan. At Virginia avenue and South Water street, Miss Teporten said, Mr. George stopped the car for a railroad crossing. The Finst machine, coming from the north, struck the George car, a sedan, toward the rear on the right side. Mrs. George was seated in the rear on that side. Miss Teporten was also in the rear seat on the left side. No occupants of the Sheboygan car, driven by Finst, were hurt, it was said. Both machines were badly damaged. Funeral Wednesday. Neither Mr. George nor Miss Teporten were unconscious. Mrs. George was taken to St. Nicholas hospital and her condition gradually grew worse until death occurred Sunday morning. Mrs. George, who was before her marriage, Lillian Pates, was married to Arthur George 33 years ago. Besides her husband, she leaves two brothers in Arkansas. The body was brought to this city this afternoon from Sheboygan and taken to the residence, 927 South Tenth street, where funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2pm. George was killed, Mr. George seriously injured and Miss Susan Terpoorten received lesser injuries when the automobile Mr. George was driving was struck from the rear by another car when it was stopped at a railway crossing in the city of Sheboygan last Saturday night. The ladies had accompanied Mr. George who had been to Madison on business. They were taking the short cut through the city of Sheboygan instead of following Route 141. Mr. George made a stop for caution at a railway crossing. A car driven by Rudolph Finst, a Sheboygan insurance man, crashed into the standing car from the side and rear. Mr. George and Miss Tepoorten are reported as saying that Finst came at an excessive speed. It was not thought at first that Mrs. George was seriously hurt but she evidently suffered internal injuries and a violent shock. She failed to rally and passed away Sunday morning about sixteen hours after the accident. Mrs. George was 55 years of age. She was a daughter of the late Mr. Pates, a pioneer officer of the Goodrich Company fleet. She was married at Mr. George 33 years ago. She is survived by her husband and two brothers residing in Arkansas. She was a woman of fine character and had the respect of the community. HANNAH GEORGENSON MRS. GEORGENSON MAYOR'S MOTHER, DEAD AT AGE 79 Dies On Ninth Anniversary of Mate's Burial Death, which came to Mrs. Hannah, widow of Gunder Georgenson Tuesday on the ninth anniversary of the date of her husbands burial, was welcomed by Mrs. Georgenson, one of the pioneer residents of the city and she passed to her reward peacefully. Mrs. Georgenson had often spoken of the time when she would be called and expressed her readiness to go, feeling that she had fulfilled her duties on earth and had been dealt kindly with by Time. Mrs. Georgenson's death occurred at the home of her son, Harry Georgenson, in the Town of Manitowoc, with whom she had been spending the summer, and was due to infirmities of advanced age. Had Premonition of Death That Mrs. Georgenson had a premonition that the end was near was indicated several days ago when she recalled the death of her husband nine years ago this month. To a suggestion that she seemed to be improved in health, made by Mayor Georgenson on one of his visits with her, Mrs. Georgenson replied; "You remember it was this month of October when Father was summoned. Let us not discuss my heath until October passes." Up to the very time of her death Mrs. Georgenson retained her faculties and was bright and cheerful and found her chief happiness in the frequent visits with her children and old friends in the city. She had made it a practice in late years to spend the summer with her son on the farm and during the winter came to the home of Mayor Georgenson. Mrs. Georgenson was a devout Christian and her life was daily practice of her faith. She was a communicant of the M.E. church, having affiliated with that church because there was no church of her faith, Baptist, here. She was a woman whose unselfish devotion to her family and friends had made her beloved to all who knew her and her death will be keenly felt in the family circle and among a wide circle of friends. Was Native of Norway Mrs. Georgenson, nee Hannah Thompson, was a native of Norway, born at Kragaro April 27, 1843, and was married there June 1, 1863 to Mr. Georgenson and the couple came to America direct to Manitowoc in 1872. With the exception of six years during which period Mr. Georgenson was engaged in farming in Brown county, the family has always resided in this city. Seven of ten children born to Mrs. Georgenson survive to mourn her loss, being George, of Hamilton, O.; Thomas and Cornelius of California; Mayor Martin Georgenson, this city; Harry Georgenson, Town of Manitowoc and Mrs. J.C. Jirikowic of Souis, N.D.; and Miss Lottie Georgenson of Cass Lake, Minn. One brother, Nelson Thompson, of this city also survives and there are eighteen grand children and four great grandchildren. It was suggested that cold water might relieve her and she started for another room to bathe her head when suddenly she staggered and but for the prescence of Mr. Georgenson who caught her she would have fallen to the floor. He and Mrs. Georgiady had attended a picnic he arranged for school administration officials and employes at Silver Creek Park earlier Wednesday evening. The heart attack occurred shortly after he had reached home. Georgiady, a native of Milwaukee, had been in the teaching profession since he was graduated from Milwaukee State Teachers College in 1934. He had been described as a “dedicated worker” in the profession. In addition, Georgiady had been active in community affairs and his personal ambition was to develop greater community loyalty among Manitowoc residents. He began his education career at Oostburg as an elementary instructor, remaining there two years and in 193?-?? serving the school as principal. Georgiady came to Manitowoc in 1936?? and was an instructor at Jefferson School until 1943. He was a critic teacher at Eau Claire State Teachers College from January through Sept- ember of 1943?? and was elementary school teacher at Whitefish Bay, 1943-44. Returns to Manitowoc Georgiady subsequently returned to Manitowoc as a consultant in curriculum and instruction in the public schools, starting in 1944, and became director of the Division of Instruction. He succeeded Miss Phila Humphries. The change occurred under the administration of L. H. Lamb, former superintendent of schools. He assisted in pioneering educational procedure and was the author of many articles which appeared in educational periodicals. In the summer of 1948 he conducted a course at the University of Wyoming, Laramie, on the instructional field. A member of the Lions Club, he was president in 1954 and currently was editor of the service organization’s publication, “The Lion’s Rohr.” He was also a trustee and a member of its board of directors. Georgiady had been active in Masonic organizations in the city, serving Manitowoc Blue Lodge No. __, Free and Accepted Masons, as master 1955-56. He also was a member of Chapter 16, Royal Select Masters. Social Welfare Interest Interested in social welfare, Georgiady had been a member of Manitowoc County Council of Social Agencies. He had been a (Continued on Page 2-M) Georgiady (Continued from Page 1) past president of the Men’s Club of Wesley Church and served on the church pastoral relations board. He received his master’s degree at the University of Chicago and has been listed in American Education Who’s Who in 1945-46. Georgiady, a member of Phi Delta Kappa, served as president in 1952. During the summer of 1942 Georgiady acted as director of the Manitowoc Recreation Department. For years Georgiady had served on the community Brotherhood Week committee and in 1956 was chairman for the Manitowoc County annual observance. He had in past years arranged for materials to be used in public and parochial schools throughout the county Georgiady’s death was termed a loss by his immediate superior, Supt. of Schools Angus B. Rothwell. “We have lost, of course, much more than a dedicated worker, because we have lost a close personal friend,” he said. ”There is no doubt that he was one of the top directors of instruction in the state. He had been offered many opportunities to leave here but always professed his love for Manitowoc. Only yesterday he was talking about trying to build stronger loyalties for Manitowoc.” “Truly Dedicated” “He was a truly dedicated teacher, and his first thought was always of his work and not of himself.” He was born July 23, 1911, son of the late Peter Georgiady and Anna Ecomous Georgiady. He married Elaine Waak at Milwaukee Aug. 27, 1940. She survives him along with a daughter, Margaret Ann, of the city; mother, Mrs. Peter Georgiady, two sisters, Mrs. Achilles Chacnoas and Mrs. George Nichols, and two brothers, Perry and Nicholas, of Milwaukee.
