DONALD FALCK Boy Is Killed Sunday In Hunting Accident Donald Falck, 13, only son of Mr. and Mrs. Byron Falck, of 211? Michigan avenue, was killed shortly after noon Sunday in a hunting accident in the town of Morrison, Brown county. The youth, hunting rabbits with his father, and uncle, Alvin Falck of Wayside, and Vernon Buth, 15, of this city, his cousin, was struck at close range by the charge of a 12-gauge shotgun carried by Buth, according to Coroner Orlen Miller of Green Bay. No Inquest The coroner said the shooting was accidental and there would be no inquest. At the time of the accident Donald and his cousin Vernon were walking through a field on one side of the highway, and his father and uncle in another field across the road. In some manner Buth's gun discharged and the charge struck Donald in the stomach and chest. Buth's cries brought Bryon and Alvin Falck to the scene and Dr. W.L. Cochrane of Wayside was summoned. Buth, a student at Lincoln high school, joined the Falcks Sunday morning for the trip to Morrison. Donald was born at Maribel in 1929. MARION FALGE NEWS OF DEATH IS SORROW TO MANY FRIENDS Announcement of the death of Mrs. Louis Falge Monday was received with keen regret by friends and calls forth sympathy. Though it was known that Mrs. Falge's condition was extremely critical and that there was little hope of recovery, the news of her death was a shock. Mrs. Falge's illness was of eighteen months duration and was due to cancer of the lower intestines. Last fall Dr. A.J. Ochsner performed an operation at Augustana hospital, Chicago, with apparent recovery but relatives were informed that there was no hope of permanent recovery and that the malady would terminate fatally. This knowledge was kept from Mrs. Falge and from friends until recently. For several weeks Mrs. Falge has been growing weaker and it was realized that death could not be stayed, and at 1 o'clock Monday afternoon she quietly passed to rest. Mrs. Healy had been with Mrs. Falge for five weeks and all other brothers and sisters, with exception of S.N. Burton of California, had visited her during her last illness. Mrs. Falge was a woman of high ideals strong individuality and ability and her life left its impress upon those with whom she came in contact, it was in her home that she found her true sphere and her death is an irreparable loss to her family. Mrs. Falge was an ardent lover of Nature and found happiness in the simple things in life. Mrs. Falge was a member of the Presbyterian church and in her last illness her patience and fortitude and resignation of suffering emphasized the strong Christian faith which marked her life. Funeral services for Mrs. Falge wil be held from the late home at 616 St. Clair street Wednesday afternoon at 2, Rev. Sheppley officiating. NILS FALKENBERG BORROWS RAZOR TO SHAVE SELF COMMITS SUICIDE NELS FULTONBURG (sic) PAINTER ENDS LIFE AT ROCKWELL BY CUTTING HIS THROAT EARLY TODAY ILL HEALTH BELIEVED TO HAVE PROMPTED DEED Nels Fultonburg, a painter employed at Rockwell, committed suicide in his room at the Farmers Hotel in that village early today, the dead body, with the throat slashed from ear to ear being found shortly after noon by Jno. Seibel, proprietor of the hotel. Fultonburg had been dead for sometime when found. Fultonburg ended his own life with a razor which he had borrowed on pretense that he was to shave. He retired to his room some time before noon and said that after shaving he would rest for a time but was to be called for dinner. When an attaché of the hotel visited the room to call him no response could be secured to continued rapping on the door and Mr. Seibel was notified and visited the room, forcing the door to make the ghastly find. The body of the dead man was on the floor where it had apparently rolled from the bed. There was a gaping wound in the throat where Fultonburg had slashed it with the razor and the man had bled profusely, probably having severed the jugular vein. Dist. Attorney Healy and Coroner Falge were notified and left at once for the scene to investigate. Fultonburg had been at Rockwell three weeks, having come there from Chicago to be employed by John Til?s. He was 40 years of age and a widower. Fultonburg had complained of being ill and it is believed that illness and despondency prompted the suicide. The body will be taken in charge and held for relatives. Manitowoc Daily Herald, November 5, 1914 P. 1 ******** BODY OF ROCKWELL SUICIDE IS BURIED TODAY AT COUNTY EXPENSE IN THIS CITY Chicago Police Fail to Locate Relatives of Dead Man Whose Mind May have been Unbalanced by Death of His Wife. Nels Fultonburg (sic), the painter who committed suicide at Rockwell yesterday by slashing his throat with a razor, was buried today at county expense, under orders of Coroner Falge, the authorities having been unable to locate relatives of the dead man at Chicago from which city he is said to have come. Chicago police have been advised of the death of Fultonburg and if relatives later claim the body it will be disinterred. No inquest was held in the case, District Atty. Healy and Coroner Falge being satisfied that Fultonburg was a suicide, the act being prompted by ill health and despondency. The body was brought to the undertaking rooms of Urbanek & Wattawa last evening and cared for. Fultonburg, who was 49?, had cut his throat almost from ear to ear and the floor was covered with a large quantity of blood, the sight which greeted the officers being a ghastly one. It is said that Fultonburg recently lost his wife by death and her demise may have had some effect to unbalance the man’s mind though he appeared rational. CHARLES F. FECHTER C.F. FECHTER, PIONEER BOOK DEALER, IS DEAD Passes Away Today After Illness of Few Months Charles F. Fechter, well known business man of the city and proprietor of the oldest book store in Manitowoc county, passed away at his home on South Eighth street at 10:30 this morning after an illness which had confined him only two weeks. Death was peaceful and Mr. Fechter passed away with members of his family about him. The announcement of Mr. Fechter's death while not wholly unexpected, comes as a shock to the community in which he had been a resident for sixty-five years and was widely known. Mr. Fechter's health began to fail several months ago and he was forced to leave his business for an extended rest but returned two months ago, apparently much improved but the improvement did not continue and two weeks ago he was forced to take to his bed and since that time his condition has been unsatisfactory and he has declined until the end came today. Was Native of This City Few men were better known than "Charley" Fechter and none enjoyed higher esteem of the community. Born in this city September 10, 1857, Mr. Fechter has always made his home in the city. He was the son of the late G.W. Fechter and succeeded his father in business as manager of the Fechter book store, one of the oldest business institutions of the city and for a long term of years has personally conducted the business. A year ago Mr. Fechter was awarded the contract for supplying all books of public schools in the county, having worked with the committee in preparations of a system for uniformity in supplies. He was known to every educator and teacher in the county and to students, past and present in the schools. Leader State Skat Body For many years Mr. Fechter has been identified with he (sic) Wisconsin Skat League and served many terms as secretry of the league, later as president and at his death was vice president and a member of the board of directors. He was prominently identified with the Manitowoc County Fair association previous to the time the county purchased the property and for ten years or more years he served as secretary of the Fair and later was its president. In both organizations Mr. Fechter gave himself to the work with untiring effort and established a record for success of both organizations that will live. Charter Member of Elks Mr. Fechter was a charter member of Manitowoc lodge Benevolent Protective Order of Elks and had been active in the organization since its founding in 1901. He was one of the familiar figures about the club, finding much enjoyment in the privileges of his membership and was always ready to lend a hand to promote the welfare of the lodge. He was also a member of the Royal League and of the Royal Arcanum. Leaves Family to Mourn Mr. Fechter was married January 16, 1883 to Rose Guttman, the wife who with two daughters, Mrs. Reinhardt Rahr, Jr., and Miss Blanche Fechter, survive him. Two brothers A.E. Fechter, of Chicago and O.A. Fechter of North Yakima, Wash., and three sisters Mrs. C.F. White of Seattle, Mrs. Hugo Richter and Miss Louise Fechter of this city, also survive and there is one grandson, Paul Rahr. Funeral services will be held from the home Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock and the service will be conducted by the Elks lodge. The death of Mr. Fechter will be keenly regretted in the community. GEORG W. FECTER (d. 1873) From the Files of the Pilot - Forty-Four Years ago - 1873 The funeral obsequies of Geo W. Fecher(sic), who died in Saturday morning last, from the effects of the murderous assault made on him the previous Monday night were observed on the 26th. The concourse of people in attendance was the largest we have seen out for a long time. Mr. Chas. Esslinger offered a fitting tribute to the memory of the departed. Tears were trembling in the eyes of all within reach of his voice, upon the cemetery grounds. The wife and children have the sympathy of all classes of citizens in their sudden and crushing bereavement. The perpetrators of this murder most foul, have not been discovered. We do not agree with those who think he was murdered for money and have nearly or quite settled down to belief that this brutal attack was made by some person or persons residing in this city and we believe it will be worked up and brought to light. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., Oct. 4, 1917 ********** ASSASSINATION! Business House Broken Into. The Proprietor Knocked Down and Left for Dead, And His Money Taken Our entire city was thrown into an intense excitement on last Tuesday morning by the horrifying intelligence that Mr. Geo. W. The greater part of our citizens refused to credit the terrible report, but soon ill doubt was dispelled, and the fact that he was near unto death became known to all. The entire security that our citizens have heretofore rested in makes the deed seem the more terrible. Petty thieving and an occasional brawl have been the extent of outlawry. We have had less desperadoes than any place of like situation and size in the State. That we should be so rudely awakened from our dream of security seems indeed terrible. The affair thus far shrouded in mystery. Vague rumors and theories have been so rife that the truth is hard to arrive at. What could be done to discover the perpetrators has been done. Neighboring places have been telegraphed to and a detective sent for, to Milwaukee, we understand. The facts of the attempted murder so far as developed, are as follows: After Mr. Fechter had closed his store between 8 and 9 o’clock Monday evening, he went home. He had not been there a great while when Ernest Seeger, one of Louis Seeger’s sons, called for him, telling him that he wanted some cigars, as he was going to Milwaukee by the morning train. Mr. Fechter went from his house to his store to procure the cigars. Seeger tells that while in the store two strange men came in and he left them there. This was in the neighborhood of 10 o’clock. Still later about half past ten, Mayor Jones and Messrs. Mulholland and Cooper, after council meeting, stopped in Mr. Fechter’s on their way home. Speaking of being open so late, Mr. F. told them he was waiting to see a man on business. While entering the store, a person was observed dodging into an alley near. The fact was mentioned twice to Mr. F., who remarked but it was probably young Seeger, and calling out, “Who’s there,” received an answer which Mr. F. supposed was Seeger’s. The gentleman then went home, leaving Mr. Fechter alone. After this he went to Pillson’s stable and ordered the ___ to call at his house in the morning. This was the last seen of him until found next morning in his wounded state: Mrs. Fechter, who intended going to the Fair, arose early on Tuesday morning and on going to Mr. F’s. room, found it had not been occupied during the night. She immediately went to the store, and on arriving found the door unlocked, and her husband sitting in a chair, into which he had apparently drawn himself, covered with blood, and the brain oozing from the fractures of his skull. Her screams soon brought assistance, and Mr. F. was taken to his home. An examination revealed the fact that he had been robbed of his money, but his pocket- book left. His watch and chain were not taken. His wounds were found to have been made by a blunt, heavy instrument, which proved to be his own hammer which had been taken from among his tools in the back part of the room and after too well answering its purpose, replaced it. The assailants struck some six or seven blows with this murderous instrument, only one of which fractured the skull. He was felled to the floor, and after lying there for some time, revived sufficiently to get himself into his chair, and on the counter near, fingermarks are found showing that he was conscious and tried to raise himself to his feet. That he had been on the floor is shown by his clothes and other evidences. That the intention was murder, as well as robbery, there can be no reasonable doubt. If the plunder alone was intended, the first, or at least the second blow was sufficient to deprive Mr. Fechter of consciousness. When assistance arrived he was still semi-conscious, and has been so at intervals since. In answer to the question who it was that robbed him, he has made different assertions, one of which was that two strangers, one a captain, had done the work. What credence shall be given his statements in his present condition it is hard to say. The strangest thing in connection with the affair is that the deed should have been done on one of the most public streets at the time of night that it probably was, and in the beat of a night watchman whose business it is to see that all is well. The facts would at first glance seem to indicate that the work was done by those well used to it. Such men, however, do not usually kill their victim, and are prepared with instruments of their own—Whether professional or otherwise, they were well acquainted with the habits and affairs of Mr. Fechter. About $200 was the amount supposed to have been stolen. A reward of $1,000 has been offered for the capture and conviction of the murderers, $500 by the city and $500 by the county. Mr. Fechter, at the present writing is still alive. The fractured skull has been removed from his brain, and if inflammation does not set in, there is a possibility of his recovery. He has not yet completely regained his consciousness, and is very weak from loss of blood. Manitowoc Pilot, September 25, 1873 P. 4 ********** [G.W. Fechter]

GEORGE FECHTER (d. 1910) G.W. FECHTER SUMMONED BY DEATH TODAY Well Known Business Man of City Dead After Week’s Illness DEATH FOLLOWS A MINOR OPERATION Gear. (sic) W. Fechter, one of the best known business men of the city who for twenty years had been engaged in business as a stationer, died suddenly at the family home 707 North Sixth street, at 12:45 today. Mr. Fechter’s death resulted from erysipelas and followed an illness of one week. Announcement of Mr. Rechter’s death came as a shock to the city. Ten days ago he underwent a minor operation for a removal of a growth on the scalp, an operation from which no danger was anticipated but shortly after, erysipelas made its appearance and Mr. Rechter’s condition became alarming and two days ago it was said that the chances were against his recovery. Everything that medical skill and loving kindness could suggest was done for the patient but to no avail and early in the day it became apparent that death was a matter of but few hours and the end came shortly after noon. Mrs. Fechter and son George were with Mr. Fechter at his death and during his illness. Mr. Fechter suffered severely. Mr. Fechter was a native of Manitowoc, having been born in this city March 4, 1860, being 50 years of age at the time of his death. For twenty years he had been engaged in business conducting a stationery store on North Eighth street and up to within ten days ago, he gave his personal attention to the business. Mr. Fechter was married to Miss Pauline Mendlick twenty-five years ago and besides the widow, one son, George Fechter survives. Three brothers, Charles of this city, Emil of Chicago, and Oscar of North Yakima, Wash., and three sisters, Mrs. Hugo Richter, Miss Lucy Fechter, of this city and Mrs. Charles White of Antigo, survive. Out of a life of business activity, with energies unimpaired and with no warning, Mr. Fechter was suddenly summoned and the force of the shock must add to the inten- sity of the grief of the family and friends. Few friends were aware of his illness and none knew that his life was endangered and it will be hard for them to realize that he is dead. During many years in business in the city Mr. Fechter had become widely known and he was held in universal esteem. He was active, energetic and a good business man. He was genial and social in his daily life, and and considerate and benevolent in his impulse and had won the respect of his friends and associates. Mr. Fechter was a member of the Royal League and the Knights of Pythias Orders and one of the organizers of the Social Dancing club and active in other social organ- izations in the city. In business circles he was one of the best known men of the city and his death will occasion keen regret to a host of business associates and friends. Funeral arrangements have not been made as yet. Mr. Fechter’s mother died only a few months ago. Manitowoc Daily Herald, August 10, 1910 P. 1 ******** G.W. EMIL FEHRING (d. 1900) MYSTERIES CLEARED UP Bodies of Emil Fehring and Arthur Rahn Float To The Surface At The Slip IN WATER MANY DAYS Floating Corpse In Each Case Attracted Attention of those in the Vicinity—Inquests Within twenty-four hours the river gave up the bodies of two men, whose disappearance has created so much comment in the last two weeks. The mystery surrounding the whereabouts of Arthur Rahn and Emil Fehring are at last solved. A strange coincidence it was that they were found after nearly the same length of time had elapsed since their almost simultaneous disappearances. Rahn had been missing for thirteen days, while Fehring had not been heard from for twelve days. That Rahn was lying somewhere in the depths of the slip has never been seriously doubted but the finding of the body of Emil Fehring was totally unexpected since indications had pointed in other directions and not as strenuous efforts had been made in the search. It was seven o’clock Saturday evening that Sam Randolph, Jr., who was rowing on the river near the end of the slip saw a body floating just opposite the Goodrich coal sheds. He immediately notified police officials and assisted Officer Sniffin in bringing the body up to Vogt’s undertaking establishment. Here a coroner’s jury had been summoned to view the corpse and after doing so it was decided to adjourn until eight o’clock Monday morning. The jurors met this morning at Justice Markham’s office. They were F.J. Blesch, A. Ryan, B. Kubatsky, P.J. Reiter, D. Herzog and R. Puls. They heard considerable testimony the most important of which was that of Julius Dahn, who was the last to see Fehring before he was reported missing. He testified that he saw the latter on July 9th at about 5:15 pm near the corner of Marshall and South Ninth street. Fehring did not stagger but plainly showed that he had been drinking. Sam Randolph also testified to the fact of Fehring being a drinking man. The verdict of the jury was that Emil Fehring came to his death at the C. & N.W. slip in the city of Manitowoc on or about the 9th day of July 1900, by drowning. Fehring’s body was frightfully bloated. He was a man of about 38 years of age, weighed about 225 pounds and was a cigar maker by trade. His shop was on Washington street, although some years ago he conducted a saloon on Western Avenue. He is survived by a wife who is at present seriously will at the home of her father, H. Jackson. Yesterday afternoon a second discovery was made that cleared up the mystery of the Rahn disappearance. At about half past three William Schwartz, who is employed as a switchman on the C. & N.W. was standing on the apron of the slip as the carferry was drawing out in the stream when he noticed something floating. Upon investigation it was discovered to be the body of Rahn and with the assistance of police officials it was taken to Vogt’s undertaking rooms. One foot was cut off and other bruises on the body were noticeable probably the result of coming into contact with the wheels of the carferry. The inquest was called before Justice Markham at one o’clock this afternoon but was delayed on account of the absence of one of the jury, Gilbert Anderson. The testimony of Henry Rahn was taken who said that he had seen his brother on Monday evening and that of Frank Boureta who saw the deceased at 12:15 Tuesday afternoon. The inquest then adjourned until one o’clock tomorrow. The body was taken to New Holstein, where the funeral was held from the Lutheran Reformed church of that place. Rahn leaves a wife, two children and two brothers, one of whom resides in South Dakota. Later—The remains of Emil Fehring were laid away at Evergreen cemetery this afternoon. EMMA (HENTSCHER) FEHRS Mrs. Emma Laura Fehrs, Passes Away at So. Eight (sic) Street Home at Aadvanced Age of 84 Mrs. Fehrs Passed Away The death of Mrs. Emma Laure Fehrs, widow of the late Gustave Carl Fehrs, at her home on south Eighth street Saturday evening removed one of the best known pioneer residents of the county, a woman widely known and highly esteemed in the community. Mrs. Fehrs had been in failing health for a year and for several days it was known that death was near. The end came at 10 Saturday evening. Mrs. Fehrs was 84 years of age and had made her home in Manitowoc since 18?3 when, with her husband, she came here from New York. She was a native of Germany, born July 10, 1832, and was married there to Mr. Fehrs in 18?3 and after a year in New York they removed to this city where Mr. Fehrs established the jewelry business which his son, G.A. Fehrs, still conducts. Mr. Fehrs died in 1898. Mrs. Fehrs was beloved by all who knew her and her death will bring a sense of personal loss to a large circle of friends. She was a woman who gave her first attention to her home, yet her social nature was one of the dominant features of her character. Mrs. Fehrs was a woman of broad charity and her unassuming and kindly benefactions will long be cherished by many who were recipients of her helpfulness. During the last year of her life, in which illness made it impossible for her to continue the minstrations which she had loved to bestow, this inability was one of the sorrows of her declining days. Mrs. Fehrs is survived by three children, two daughters and one son, Mrs. Emma White, who made her home with mother, Mrs. Robert Haukuhl of Milwaukee and G.A. Fehrs of this city. The funeral will be held Wednesday and will be private from the home. Friends are requested to omit flowers.
