OSCAR FICK KICK OF HORSE PROVES FATAL TO NEWTON MAN Oscar Fick Dies While on Way to Hospital Injuries which he suffered when he was kicked by a horse yesterday, caused the death of Oscar Fick, well known town of Newton farmer early today. Fick died in the ambulance of the Urbanek and Wattawa company while being conveyed from his home to the hospital in this city. Internal hurts caused death. Fick was found by his wife in the stable yesterday morning when she heard groans of the injured man who had been kicked by one of the horses he was caring for and was unable to help himself. She pulled the body from the stable and summoned a physician. It was deemed inadvisable to remove Mr. Fick at the time but this morning arrangements were made to have him brought to the hospital for care, but before the ambulance arrived in the city, death had overtaken the patient. Kicked in Abdomen Mr. Fick was kicked in the abdomen and internal injuries of fatal nature resulted. The horse responsible for the death of its owner had never been considered vicious and it is believed that the animal, annoyed by flies, became restless, and that Mr. Fick in entering or leaving the stall, was unexpectedly the victim of the fatal blow. Was 28 Years Old Born in the town of Newton August 6, 1893, Mr. Fick would have been 28 next Saturday. NICOLAS FISHBACH Nicolaus Fischbach had a tragic life which seems to stem from his time spent in the war. He enlisted as a private in Company "E", 35th Regiment Wisconsin Infantry in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin on December 31, 1863 for a three year period. He was mustered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and paid a $60 bounty. The roll recorded his name as Nicholas Fishback, born in Germany, occupation of farmer, age of 24, blue eyes, brown hair, height 5 ft. 7 in. and fair complexion. Sept. 2, 1864 they listed him as a deserter at St. Charles, Arkansas, but he was actually in a hospital at Memphis, Tennessee and voluntarily returned to duty on Dec. 23, 1864. He is then listed as a deserter on March 2, 1865 at Mobile Point, Alabama. According to his pension files, he walked all the way from Alabama back to Centerville still wearing his uniform. On the 1870 Federal Population Census for the Town of Centerville, Manitowoc County, Wisconsin page 39 (stamped 42) he was enumerated with his brother-in-law's family, Nicolaus Braun, line 4 through 12. They took care of him until he was later committed to the Manitowoc County Insane Asylum for the chronic insane in January of 1885 were he remained till his death on July 3, 1900. He was buried in Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc City. (Note: He was Nicolaus Braun's brother-in-law (Centerville)) (from researcher/see contributors page)
