WILHELM FRANKE FATHER OF CITY TREASURER FRANKE DIES AT AGE OF 86 Wm. Franke, Pioneer Ship Carpenter of City Passes Away. William Franke, father of City Treasurer Henry Franke, and a resident of this city since 1865, being one of the pioneer ship carpenters of the city, died at his home, Division and Eleventh streets, last night, aged 86 years. Mr. Franke had been in failing health for some time and his advanced age contributed to his demise. Mr. Franke was born in Germany June 3, 1830 and come to Manitowoc in 1865 and for many years was employed as a ship carpenter, retiring some years ago when age overtook him. Besides his aged widow, Mr. Franke is survived by eight children, Mrs. William Schroeder, Mrs. Fred Rockhoff, Mrs. Wm. AUGUSTA FRANSWAY From Der Nord Westen, 02 July 1903: Death from a stroke on Thurs. last week of Mrs. Frank Fransway, a former resident of our city, in Pikeshill, N.Y., where she was visiting. The deceased, (nee Auguste Rosinsky), was born in Manitowoc 35 yrs. ago but has been living for several years in Oshkosh. She is survived by her husband and 2 children and here in Manitowoc by her sorrowing father and a brother. The body was brought here and committed to the ground on Sunday. ******* (Note: Since the ages don't match, I called the cemetery office and here is what she said: [The entry you have from the tombstone is on the same lot as the entry I have, so I have to assume they are the same person and that the tombstone is incorrect, since she probably didn't die the year after she was buried. The original burial register from 1903 says she is age 54 and that she died of apoplexy. There is no other information. She is buried on the same lot as Francis Fransway (1845-1910). I am going to assume that she was born sometime between 1849 (based on age) and 1852 (marker date), which would make sense since she would be a few years younger than Francis. The obituary sounds like it could be her, except for the age, so I am thinking there is a typo, maybe they transposed the age (35 instead of 53) or it should have been 55 instead of 35. I just looked in the Lot Diagram book for and I see that the lot was originally purchased by William Rosinsky and was paid for 6/3/1903. So now I definitely think it's her and there is just a typo in the obit./Augusta Fransway/bur. 06-28-1903/age 54 yrs./cause: apoplexy/lot purchased by William Rosinsky and was paid for 6/3/1903.]

JOHN FRANZ From Der Nord Westen, 01 Oct. 1903: (Saturday dateline) What has been long expected occurred yesterday with the death of John Franz whom we had reported as having suffered a stroke several weeks ago. One had hoped that Mr. Franz would overcome the illness and be returned to his former health, but that hope went unfulfilled as he grew weaker and weaker until his death yesterday (Friday). John Franz was one of the best known and eminent residents of our county. He was born 15 Nov. 1832 in Hockelheim, Kreis Wetzlar, and after his marriage came to America in 1856, arriving in this county on 02 July, and settled in Two Rivers. There he was employed in one of the several factories until 1864 when he lost an arm in an accident and had to give up his position. In 1865 the residents of Two Rivers elected Mr. Franz to the office of Village Treasurer, a position he filled for several years. In 1868 he was elected Registrar and moved to Manitowoc where he lived ever since. He filled that office until 1878 when he and his son established a land and loan office under the name Franz, Schmitz & Co. where he worked until his illness. Mr. Franz, who belonged to the Order of Odd Fellows and to the United Old Workers, is survived by his widow as well as 3 daughters –Mrs. Fritz Beeker, Mrs. A.J. Schmitz, and Mrs. Dr. W.G. Kemper, as well as numerous grandchildren. The above mentioned son died 8 yrs. ago. The funeral will be held Mon. afternoon at 2 p.m. from the funeral home at 917 Jay Street. ********** From Der Nord Westen, 08 Oct. 1903: The funeral of John Franz, whose passing we reported in our Sat. edition, was attended by an extraordinarily large number of mourners, a testimonial to the esteem which the deceased enjoyed in our city. Pastor Gray delivered the funeral oration. The German Odd Fellows Lodge and the vocal groups “Freier Sängerbund” and “Concordia” gave last honors to their departed brother. The rites of the Odd Fellow’s Order were observed at graveside and the singing groups delivered a dirge. Among the immediate family members attending the funeral was Mrs. John Mehl of Milwaukee, the deceased’s only sister. Mr. Mehl is in Germany at this time and could not attend. We wish to add to our biography of the deceased; he had also served for many years as a member of the Democratic Congressional District Committees and of the State Central Committees. ************ John Franz/d. 2 Oct. 1903/age 7/cause: paralysis/from record of St. James Epis. ch., Manitowoc (typo on age?)

On the evening before his death he was feeling so well that it was hoped he would be fully recovered in a few days. During the night he was restless and about 10 o’clock, Dr. Kemper was called. After Dr. Kemper arrived, the young man’s temperature registered 107, then increased to 107-1/2, 108, and finally at 108-1/2 degrees. The doctor summoned the family in anticipation of death, which occurred at 2 a.m. John Franz, Jr. was born in Two Rivers 25 Aug. 1861 and came to Manitowoc when his father moved here following his election. GEORGE W. FRICKE From Der Nord Westen, 07 Dec. 1899: On Tues. last week George Fricke, the well-known brick maker, was working in the clay pit of his brickyard when a wall collapsed. Mr. Fricke quickly jumped out of the way to avoid being buried by the mass, but his leg was struck and broken. He was taken home and put under a doctor's care. The bone was set, bound and everything appeared to be going well until Mrs. Fricke noticed Wed. night that he was in his bed unconscious and breathing heavily. Efforts to revive him were fruitless. He remained unconscious until his death at 9 a.m. Sat. The doctors are of the opinion that his death followed an accumulation of blood around the brain. The deceased was born in Germany in 1842 and came to America in his youth, spending many years in our city. He leaves a widow and 5 children. The funeral was Tues. ******** CROSSED DIVIDING LINE. George Fricke, Responds to Final Summons-Death at 9 a.m. George Fricke, the well known brick maker, crossed the dark chasm and entered into the great unknown at 9 o'clock this morning. His death was entirely unexpected and will come as a shock to his many friends, who were not aware that his condition was alarming. Several days ago Mr. Fricke, while at work at the brick-yard sustained the fracture of a limb by the caving in of a clay bank. He was removed to his home and a doctor summoned. The patient seemed to improve and suffered no pain whatever. Late Wednesday evening Mrs. Fricke noticed that her husband breathed heavily and with considerable effort. The attending physician was called, but it was found impossible to restore the patient to conciousness and after remaining in a stupor two days he answered the summons, breathing his last at 9 o'clock. Physicians are of the opinion that death was due to thrombus of the brain, a clogging of the blood vessels, in effect the same as appoplexy. It is not thought that Mr. Fricke sustained internal injuries in the accident of a few days ago, although the heavy breathing is thought to have been due to a thrombus of the lungs also. Deceased was born in Germany in August 1842. He has been a resident of this city many years and had conducted the brick yard most of the time. He was a careful, conservative business man, quiet and unassuming and thoroughly honest and upright. A good husband and a kind father, he will be sadly missed by the widow and five children, four sons and one daughter, who survive him. The funeral will probably be held Tuesday afternoon. When he arrived at his brother’s house it was empty because everyone was working in the fields. Frischmuth has been sick for a while and occasionally suffers great pain so that life is often wearisome. He took a rifle from the wall and shot himself in the mouth. The bullet went through his head but didn’t kill him, so Frischmuth picked up a knife and tried to cut his throat. His brother, who heard the shot, came in to find his brother lying in his blood. Dr. Roberts was immediately called and other than stopping the bleeding there is little hope for his recovery. Frischmuth is 52 years old and has a wife and 4 children. RAY G. FROSCH County Stove Pioneer, Dies Grimms - Ray G. Frosch, veteran hardware and automobile dealer and the first in Wisconsin to introduce oil and gas burning stoves in the rural area, died at his home in this village Thursday night. He was 80. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at St. John St. James Lutheran Church, Reedsville. The Rev. John Wendland will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. Born April 18, 1877, at Wayside, Brown County, son of the late Frank and Elizabeth Beattie Frosch, he began his business enterprise several years before the turn of the century and a year before he married Emma Rader at Sheboygan Falls June 7, 1899. The couple celebrated its 58th wedding anniversary this year. The store he launched at Wayside in 1898 throve and three years later a similar business was established at Grimms. In addition to the hardware store a grain elevator was erected and along with it a garage. When a fire destroyed the hardware store and garage in 1930, only the hardware business was re-established in an adjacent location. At that time the Frosch Brothers partnership was dissolved. Frank Jr. had been in business with him and previous to that their father had been associated in the enterprises. Years before bottle gas stoves were available in rural areas, Mr. Frosch sold coal and wood burning ranges. Not satisfied with this, he introduced oil burning units which could be installed in existing stoves, and a number of years ago took over agency for a gas firm which made it possible for him to sell an appliance he believed would help his rural friends live with more comfort. In addition to serving many years on the Town of Cato School Board he was postmaster for more than 30 years, retiring in 1947 under the compulsory age program. Five years later he retired from active participation in all business and devoted his interests to gardening. He was a charter member of the choir of the church at Reedsville. Surviving are his wife, a son, Maitland, of Minneapolis, two daughters, Mrs. Samuel M. Kuenzi, of Watertown, Wis., and Mrs. Francis Dietl of Manitowoc; two sisters, Mrs. Walter Schlicker, of Detroit and Mrs. Alfred Halzer, of Neptune Beach, Fla.; and a grandson.
