CARL FLIEGLER Died At his home in this city, Sunday, Oct. 25, 1885, Carl Fleigler, eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Fleigler, aged about twenty years. Thus has ended many years of patient but hopeless suffering. Since the deceased was eight years old he has been an invalid, and his disease was such that hope of recovery was precluded. Unable to join other lads in their sports, Carl found his happiness in books and had a mind well stored with information. His death at this time when his family is already suffering from another misfortune calls out the sympathy of their many friends in this community to an unusual degree. The funeral will take place this afternoon at two o'clock and will doubtless be largely attended. ROBERT FLOSBACH Died In The Ditch Bob Flossbach Takes A Ride With A Blind Horse And Tumbles From Buckboard Into Eternity Early yesterday morning Bob Flossbach, a well known character in this community, started out for the Francis Creek fair. He was riding along in an old buckboard and driving an older and a blind horse. He was seen passing along the Plank road near Dr. Hall's residence. A little further on he was again seen by one Mrs. Nielsen, who noticed him swaying to and fro and then fall into the seat. The horse being now driver less, walked into a ditch, and the prostrate form of the driver rolled out. Several persons passing along the road immediately hurried to the fallen man. He gave a few gasps and then expired. Justice White issued a precept for a coroner's jury and proceeded to hold an inquest. The body was removed to the Third Ward Engine House where a postmortem examination was made by Dr. Pritchard, who found the cause of Flossbach's death to have been heart disease and the jury, consisting of P.S. Tillson, Ole Benton, D. Bleser, Jos. Hoyer, W. Hoyer and C. Spindler rendered their verdict accordingly. Constable Todl had the body encased in a coffin and placed in the cemetery vault and this morning at ten o'clock, the funeral occurred. Manitowoc Lake Shore Times Tuesday, October 2, 1883, pg. 1 ********** GONE. Bob Flosbach is gone. Death, which is a serious thing to most people, is full of a sort of grim kindness in Bob's case. Bob didn't have much volition in the matter, but his death stands out in solitary prominence as the one worthy deed in his career. Bob was on familiar terms with everyone. He should have lived in the time of the reign of the ?? of France. His badness had in it that already, uninterrupted flow which failed to attract attention. There was no redeeming trait to mar the harmony of movement. But set down one thing to Bob's credit: He never pretended to be good. Bob was a bad man for boys to associate with; but he never tried to appear otherwise. When he attacked the citadel of virtue, he wore no mask and carried the black flag. He practiced no wiles; but on his face was the ineffable inscription written in the deep characters of habit, "I'm bad." He was bad, but the current of his deeds flowed on to the great ocean of Vice within the sight of man. There was no underground current. No flowers to deck the horrid form of sin; no religious coloring to soften the hard front of vice; no honeyed phrases to sweeten the importunity of guilty desire; no mask to cloak the design of a perverted heart. Bob was bad; bad in purpose; bad in action; bad in the end sought; bad in appearance; bad in every- thing, in assuming as well as in reality, with the one glorious exception that he never tried to appear otherwise. This is Bob's monument; the one single ray which issues from a life of rare and distinguishing barrenness; the one solitary spark of negative virtue; the merit of not being a hypocrite. Manitowoc Pilot Thursday, October 4, 1883 ******** Bob Flosbach had his neck broken on Monday morning. He started for the French Creek fair with a blind miserable looking old horse, which he evidently designed to pass off on some unsuspecting farmer as a first class animal. But He who watched the fall of a sparrow circumvented Bob and raved the farmer. Bob's horse stumbled into a ditch, fell on his rider and broke his neck. Bob has been in ditches many a time and oft, and many a time has bestrid a blind and lame horse but never before with this result. The pitcher went once too often to the well. Law School For a second time within two days, death Sunday claimed a former city official identified with early day direction of municipal affairs when Gustavus A. Forrest, nestor of the Manitowoc County Bar and ex-city attorney, passed away at the age of 81 years. Death, which came to Mr. Forrest at his home, 902 Buffalo street, was due to infirmities of age and complications from which he had long been a sufferer. For several years, Mr. Forrest had been in feeble health and for many weeks, confined to his home. Funeral services for Mr. Forrest will be held Tuesday afternoon from the William Frazier undertaking parlors, 520 Buffalo street at 1:30 and at 2 from the chapel at Evergreen cemetery. Six members of the Bar association will be pall bearers, H. L. Markham, E.S. Schmitz, L. W. Levina, E.L. Kelley, C.E. Brady and A. J. Wyseman. Located Here in 1869 Mr. Forrest located in Manitowoc in 1869 immediately following his graduation as a member of the first class of the University of Wisconsin law school and he had been identified with the profession here since that time. He served as justice of the peace and was a member of several pioneer law firms of the city, founding the firm of Forrest and White, later the Forrest and Sedywick firm and then that of Forrest and Blesch. He served six terms as city attorney at different periods and was the first divorce counsel named for Manitowoc county when the legislature enacted a law creating that office, Mr. Forrest having been recommended for the post by members of the County Bar Association. Born in New Hampshire August 23, 1845, Mr. Forrest came to Wisconsin with his father in 1850, his mother having died when he was but three years old. The family spent a year at Kenosha and then at Portage where his boyhood was spent. In 1861 Mr. Forrest entered Lawrence but later went to the University of Wisconsin to complete his course and graduated in 1869. At Madison he read law in the offices of Spooner and Lambs, pioneers in Wisconsin and at his graduation was well equipped for his work. Wife Precedes Him in Death Mr. Forrest was married December 18, 1871 to Esther Krose, of Tioga county, Pennsylvania, who preceded him in death some years ago. FRANK FOSTER FRANK FOSTER IS FOUND DEAD Boat Hand Dies of a Heart Attack This Morning. Frank Foster, 62, a boat hand on the steamer Florida, was found dead in bed at 9 o'clock this morning in the Center House, on North Ninth street. Coroner G.F. Rau pronounced the death natural, resulting from a heart attack. Foster, who worked on the Florida all summer, had been hired as shipman for the winter. He planned to go aboard the boat today to make it his winter quarters. Most of his belongings had already been placed aboard the boat. He retired last night in perfect health to all outward appearance. Early this morning he got out of bed and told the manager that he felt sick, but he went back to bed again, refusing aid. As he usually got up early the manageer went to his room at about 9 o'clock and found him dead. Officer Tomchek was called and he and Coroner Rau handled the case. The deceased has two stepdaughters in the city, Mrs. R. Smith, 307 North Fifth street, and Mrs. Walter Bently, 504 North Fifth street. GEORGE FOSTER (d. 1933) DEATH CLAIMS YOUTH INJURED IN CAR MISHAP George Foster, Jr., Dies After Blood Poisoning; His Funeral Is Today Blood poisoning which set in yesterday caused the death at the hospital at 6 p.m. Monday of George Foster Jr., 22, south side young man who was thrown from a car Saturday evening on County Trunk D northwest of the city. In the hope of saving his life, surgeons on Sunday morning amputated Foster’s crushed and mangled arm at the shoulder. Neither Foster in his moments of consciousness, nor Bernard J. Manlick, 20, his companion and driver of the car, could explain how the accident happened. Manlick said that dust from the car of Otto Zander, Brillion, proceeding west on Highway D just ahead of him obscured his vision and in an attempt to pass, the bumpers of the two cars tangled in some way, throwing the Manlick machine into the ditch. Manlick escaped without injury but Foster, who weighed 240 pounds, was thrown into the ditch and his right arm badly mangled in the gravel and dirt of the highway. Were Chums Foster and Manlick were chums for several years. Early Saturday evening the latter called for Foster at his home, 1008 Hamilton street, and they drove away to Two Rivers. They were enroute west from Two Rivers bound for Manitowoc Rapids when the accident happened. The deceased was born in this city 22 years ago and after his schooling, was employed at the shipyards as an apprentice in the blacksmith shop. For nearly two years he had been unemployed except for helping his father, George Foster Sr., in the building of two small boats. He is survived by his father, two brothers, Irvin and Oscar, city, a sister, Marie, city, and a sister, Ferol of Williams Bay, Wis. GEORGE FOX George Fox Dead; Survived Maine Sinking MANITOWOC—George Fox, 86, of 1126 N. 16th St., the last Wisconsin survivor of the sinking of the battleship Maine, died Sunday evening at Veterans Administration Hospital, Wood, after a lingering illness. Mr. Fox was 19 when the USS Maine was moored in the harbor at Havana, Cuba. He was in his hammock aboard the ship when a double blast the night of Feb. 15, 1898, sank the ship. Mr. Fox received a head wound. One of the few veterans of the Spanish American War, Mr. Fox often recalled his three years of service during that campaign and liked to point out that he had civilian service roles in two other wars. During World War I he inspected army and navy shells for the U.S. Ordnance Dept. at the Kohler Co., Kohler, and in World War II was employed at Manitowoc Shipbuilding Inc., producing gauges and special tools for the submarines being built at the yards. In Lighthouse Service He was born Jan. 11, 1878, at Chicago, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Fox. He married Bessie Elmore of Mount Pleasant, Mich., at Lansing and was employed for a time by the Reo Motor Car Co. at Lansing. Mr. Fox entered government lighthouse service in 1914 at Sheboygan, joined the Kohler plant work force in 1916 and after he came to Manitowoc was employed 10 years by Gaterman Mfg. Co. Inc., until he went to work at Manitowoc Shipbuilding Inc. He retired in 1945. In his retirement years he reminisced about the fact of the Maine, the title of a book which incorporated his experiences when it was published in April of 1958. It was Mr. Fox’ contention that the Spanish military was responsible for the sinking of the ship, recalling that the Spanish pilot who moored the craft had placed it over a mine. Funeral Wednesday Mr. Fox is survived by a son, Bruno, of Manitowoc, a daughter, Mrs. Robert Pancost, of Albion, Pa., and a grandson, Frank J. Pelisek, of Milwaukee. Mrs. Fox died in 1954. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral home. The Rev. Paul H. Blaufuss will officiate and cremation will follow. Friends may call at the funeral home after 3 p.m. Tuesday. Manitowoc Herald Times, December 28, 1964 P. 11 ********** MAINE SURVIVOR HERE Manitowoc has a survivor of the Maine disaster, which occurred in Havana harbor on the night of February 15, 1898, with an immediate loss of 260 sailors killed. George Fox, 417 Twenty-Sixth Street in Riverview, enlisted in the navy at the age of 17 in 1896 at Brooklyn, having found life in Grand Rapids, Mich., too monotonous. At the time of the explosion he had a desirable job filling oil lamps used to save coal after midnight. This assignment carried the privilege of bunking in a lamp locker, a steel cubicle, serving as a base for a gun above. He turned in here the fateful night and woke up on top of a pile of twisted steel, with two bleeding wounds and numerous bruises. Fearing a further explosion of the ships own ammunition, he took a header into the bay and was picked up by a boat crew from a Spanish warship. After a brief hospital experience, he was back on board, this time on the Indiana and was in at the destruction of Cevera's fleet off Santiago. Mr. Fox resided here for a time during the recent world war and has lately moved back here from Sheboygan Falls. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., Sept. 21, 1922
