CARL W. ENDRESS WHERE THE WEARY FIND REST Carl W. Endress, Pioneer Resident, Passes from Life of Long Years One more of the pioneers of Manitowoc county has crossed the river to rest in the shade of the trees, death having released Carl W. Endress from the responsibilities of earthly life at 10 o’clock Sunday night. Death’s messenger is a sad visitation, but when the insidious foe of life has gnawed for months, oftimes for years, on the vitals of some fond charge on the care and attention of mother, father, husband, wife or children, who have watched the color fade from the cheek and the luster from the eye, then it is that the soul is glad to pass the portals and bring relief to dying mortality as well as to the living. Such was the end of Carl Endress, who for a long period had battled disease until his enfeebled constitution could no longer bear up and then, conscious up to within a few minutes of death, his eyes closed peacefully and the spirit silently took flight. Carl W. Endress, who had been a resident of this county nearly half a century, was born in Wittenberg, Germany, November 7, 1828 and immediately after his marriage in 1854 came to Manitowoc county where he has since been a prominent and highly respected resident. For years, from 1855 to 1888 he made his home at Two Rivers and at the latter date retired from active business pursuits and came to this city where he has continued to reside. Mrs. Endress died a few months ago and since that time the husband has failed rapidly. He was a patient sufferer and received the tender care of his children, but it was seen some time ago that his life work was about to be finished. His death came as a severe shock. During his life-time acquaintance with affairs of Manitowoc county Mr. Endress had ever been a citizen devoted to the interests of the community and had accomplished much for the advancement of this section. He was a man of high character and was universally esteemed. Three sons Emil G. and S.F., of Saulte Ste. Marie, and A.J., of this city, and one daughter, Mrs. Joseph Willott Jr., besides a large circle of friends, survive to mourn his demise. The funeral will be held Wednesday afternoon from the late home, 504 State street and will be in charge of the fraternal organization Sons of Hermann, of which deceased was a member. Mr. Engelbrecht had been failing for some time and during the past three weeks had declined rapidly and death was not unexpected. He was 78 years of age. Mr. Engelbrecht was widely known, having for many years previous to his election as sheriff been a salesman for the International Harvester Company, and coming into personal contact with farmers and business men of the county. He had a personality that was also a factor in his campaign and received a large endorsement and served efficiently in his office. Born in Germany May 19, 1850, Mr. Engelbrecht came to America at the age of 17, the family locating in Nebraska and a year later removing to Manitowoc where he continued his residence up to three years ago. Mr. Engelbrecht lived on a farm at Rosencrans and was married 55 years ago to Bertha Bruss who preceded him in death 17 years ago. The couple came to the city forty years ago. Kern, Mrs. Ernst Broot, Mrs. Herman Koshnik and Mrs. Herbert Erdmann. Mr. Engelbrecht had made his home with a daughter at Milwaukee since leaving here and had visited in the city on numerous occasions until his health became too feeble. He had not been seriously ill, but a gradual decline which had become rapid the past few weeks, forecast the end which came yesterday. Manitowoc Herald News, Manitowoc, Wis. BRUNO ERTZ A FINE DISPLAY. Occupying a portion of the north wall in J.A. Rummele's jewelry store on south Eighth street is a display of water color paintings which cannot fail to attract the attention of visitors. The pictures were put in place yesterday, and to-day (sic) have been the admiration of all who saw them. The pictures are all studies in still life and show an accuracy of detail, and artistic conception that marks the painter as an artist of more than ordinary talent. The highest ideal of the painter-close imitation of nature-has evidently been the aim here, and no observer can fail to be impressed with the success of the effort. It should be a source of pride to every citizen of the city that this work is all from the brush of a talented young Manitowoc artist, Mr. B. Ertz. A visit to Mr. Ertz's studio in the armory building will well repay any lover of the beautiful in the line of protrait work. He has on exhibition there several beautiful specimens of portrait painting, porcelain work, water colors, et. One or two are study pieces, types of character as shown in the study of the head. One in particular, "An Old Country Schoolmaster" has been exhibited in the leading galleries throughout the county and received honorable mention. Mr. Ertz has been for the past ten years engaged in this line of work, most of the time in Detroit. He is now located permanently in this city and should receive liberal support. He has painted a number of protraits for the leading families of the city and has given the best of satisfaction. He also gives instructions to a small class of students who are anxious to acquire proficiency in the use of the brush and palette. The pictures on display at Rummele's can be bought at very reasonable prices and should find a ready sale among those of our citizens who love to beautify their home with the works of art. GOTTFRIED J. ESCH From Der Nord Westen, 21 Dec. 1899: The body of G. Esch arrived from Colorado Sat. evening and was buried Sun. ******* WAS FAR FROM HOME Death Summons Came Suddenly to Gottfried Esch at Denver, Col. HEMORRHAGE OF THE LUNGS Deceased Was a Son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Esch and Was Born Here. Never was the familiar saying, "In the midst of life we are in death," more forcibly illustrated than in the case of Gottfried Esch, announcement of whose death came in a telegram to relatives there late Tuesday afternoon. His death occured at Denver, Col., where had had been for some time, and was very sudden, being due to a hemorrhage of the lungs. Gottfied Esch was a son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Esch, of this city, and was born August 15, 1866, being the youngest of four sons. About six years ago the young man's health began to fail and physicians advised a change. In the hope that he might find relief he went west, traveled extensively and finally located at Denver. He was home on a visit but once since leaving, and returned. The climate of Colorado seemed to agree with him and the letters received by his parents were most hopeful that he would regain health, but God had willed it not, and the final summons came suddenly and without warning. The deceased was in his thirty-third year at the time of his death, and most of his brief life had been spent in this city, where he attended school and lately assisted his father in conducting his business. He was widely known among the young people of the city and throughout the county, and was a general favorite, not only in his own social circle but with all who knew him. He was of a modest unassuming dispostion and won the friendship of all by kindness of heart, generosity and affectionate nature.
