NICHOLAS DEDRICK Inventor Is Claimed By Death Today N. DEDRICK PASSES AWAY EARLY TODAY Perfected an Engraving Machine That Gained Prominence at Home and Abroad Nicholas Dedrick, well known inventor and resident of the city since 1902, pased (sic) away at his home, 715 North Ninth street, early today, aged 67 years. Mr. Dedrick had been in declining health for a long time and since September 5 had been confined to his home although he continued to direct affairs of the manufacturing establishment which he conducted at Ninth and State streets. His passing was sudden and is a shock to friends. Mr. Dedrick was the inventor of a machine used in the engrraving art and had just completed work on a new model, the first production of which was ready on the day before death claimed him. The original model was perfected some years ago by Mr. Dedrick and had been patented in this country, England and France and had gained recognition as the greatest aid to the engraving business. The machine has been manufactured in this city at the plant established by its inventor and is in use at the Ford plant at Detroit, at the Tinsel Company plant here, in Pittsburg, Philadelphia and other cities and has attracted much attention. Inventor a Genius Born on a farm in Kewaunee county Sept. 23, 1860, Mr Dedrick early gave himself to development of the inventive turn with which he was endowed and in youth came to this city where he ????ed employment at the Hansen Wagon Works and gave special study to solution of problems affecting the concern and later was with the Prochazka and Chloupek Machine company where he had opportunity to further his efforts. Later he removed to Chicago and entered the plant of the Barnhardt Bros. and Spindler company where he developed the ideas that gave him his later success as an inventor. From his earliest days Mr. Dedrick had made astounding progress in mechanical work and gained a reputation as one of the foremost men in his line in the state, frequently being called upon by the largest concerns of the state in engineering problems. Mr. Dedrick was however, of a quiet studious temperament and this accounts for the fact that he did not secure recognition to which his capabilities entitled him from the outside. Home and Machines Hobby Wrapped up in his work and with his home interests first in mind, Mr. Dedrick had taken little active part in city and social life but he was a member of the Men's Club of St. Paul's Lutheran church and found recreation in the club. He was active in its support. Mr. Dedrick was married in 1905 to Ida Olson who with two daughters Martha Louise, a student at the Chicago medical school and Helene, senior at the University of Wisconsin, survive him. One sister, Miss Caroline Dedrick of Chicago, also survives. Funeral services will be held at 1:45 from the home and at 2 from St. Paul's Lutheran church Saturday afternoon. The Revs. Espeseth and Ristad will officiate. Manitowoc Herald News, Thursday, October 27, 1927 P.1 ****** Brief mention was made in last week's issue of the Pilot of the death of Nicholas Dedrick which occurred last Thursday morning. He was born on a farm in Kewaunee County and was 67 years of age. At the age of 18 he left the farm and came to this city. He was a young man of an inventive turn of mind and was deeply interested in mechanical work. He secured employment at the Hansen Wagon Works and later was employed at the Prochazka and Chloupek Machine shop. Some years later he went to Chicago and entered the plant of Barnhart Bros. & Spindler where he develeped the ideas that gave him his later success as an inventor. While at work in the type of foundry he invented a type machine and later on a machine to do engraving for book covers and also a comb machine. In the Pilot of March 16, 1897, John Nagle had the following item: "Nic Dedrick has sold his type machine to Barnhardt Bros. & Spindler of Chicago, the large type founders. It is the most complete thing in use today. Mr. Dedrick used it here for some time selling the output to type foundries. He is now at work on a large machine which is to do engraving for book covers. There seems to be no end to the fertility of his genius." Mr. Dedrick was an unusual man. He was a great mechanic. In 1898 he went to England to set up one of his machines. This modest inventor became known by the excellence of the work he did. In the death of Nic Dedrick, Manitowoc has lost a good citizen, an honest, upright, quiet, unassuming man; a man of superior power of invention. Mr. Dedrick was married in 1904 to Ida Olson who with two daughters, Martha Louise, a student of the Chicago Medical college and Helena, senior at the University of Wisconsin, survive him. One sister, Miss Caroline Dedrick of Chicago also survive. The funeral was held Saturday afternoon from St. Paul's Lutheran church, Rev. Espeseth officiating. Rev. D.G. Ristad, pastor of the First Lutheran church, also gave an interesting talk on the life and character of the deceased. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery. Mrs. Dedrick and her daughter immediately departed for Forest Junction in an automobile and R. G. Plumb, of the Plumb & Nelson company also visited the city to arrange for the transportation of the remains to this city today. Mr. Dedrick left the city yesterday morning for a trip to points west which he visited weekly, driving his car. The day was one of oppressive heat and Mr. Dedrick, who was a man of considerable weight, undoubtedly suffered from the heat. Upon arrival at Forest Junction he visited the store of one of his customers and complained of feeling ill and was assisted to the hotel where he asked for a physician. A message was hurriedly dispatched to this city summoning his family while a physician was called, but before anything could be done, Mr. Dedrick had expired. Mrs. Dedrick in this city, received the news of death just as she was preparing to depart for Forest Junction. Decedent was born at Carlton, Kewaunee county, August 20, 1865, being in his forty- ninth year at the time of his death. He came to Manitowoc at the age of 18 years and was employed by the Madsen Seed company and later engaged in the barber business, conducting a shop for a number of years, later accepting a position with the Plumb & Nelson company with which concern he had been identified for twenty-five years. Mr. Dedrick was a member of the United Commercial Travelers association and of the Travelers Protective association and had served as president of the former organiz- ation and had been active in the work of both associations. He was one of the popular salesmen of the city and in his work for the company he represented had a wide acquaintance in the state. Mr. Dedrick was prominent in the Norwegian Lutheran church and was a trustee of St. Paul’s church in this city, and for fifteen years had been president of the Sunday school of the church. For several years he had been a member of the board of trustees of the Norwegian Homes Orphanage at Wittenberg, this stat, an institution maintained by the church and was elected president of the board holding the position at the time of his death. Married November 3, 1885, to Hannah Herman, of Two Creeks, Mr. Dedrick is survived by his wife and six children, Adah, Leila, Hilda, Lester, Lorraine and John, Jr., all of this city. Three brothers, Peter, of St. Paul, Nicholas and Charles M., this city, and one sister, Miss Lena Dedrick, of Chicago, also survive. Mr. Dedrick was a man who enjoyed the respect and esteem of all who knew him and was universally admired for his high character and exemplary life. He was a man of firm convictions and in his daily life exemplified principles which he believed in, upright, conscientious and honest and his death will be deeply deplored. Mr. Dedrick always took an interest in young men and proved helpful to many who enjoyed his confidence. The body of Mr. Dedrick was brought here from Forest Junction at 1 o’clock today and taken to the family home at 627 North Seventh street. The funeral of Mr. Dedrick will be held from the late home, 627 North Seventh street, tomorrow afternoon at 1:30 and from St. Paul’s Norwegian Lutheran church, Tenth and St. Clair streets at 2 o’clock. A short time ago he was called to the rectorship of St. James' Episcopal Church in our city, where he officiated for a few Sabbaths, but left soon in quest of health in Colorado. He was a man of fine scholarly attainments; of modest, unassuming, cultivated, gentlemanly address; a gentleman in word and deed, and a fine type of a Christian without cant or affectation. He was a son-in-law of our respected fellow citizen, Dr. Barnes, of the First National Bank to whom, with his family, this blow comes with heavy hand. The warmest sympathies of a large circle of friends are with the sorrowing widow and family of the deceased in this hour of deep affiction to them. BARBARA A. DELANO DEATH COMES TO MRS. W.W. DELANO TODAY Calmly and peaceful, and with resignation, Mrs. William W. DeLano passed away this afternoon at the family home on N. Fifth street, her demise not being unexpected, but none the less a shock to family and friends. Mrs. DeLano had been failing for some time and a few days ago her children out of the city were summoned. She rallied and there was hope that she might survive but the hope was dispelled today when she lapsed into the last sleep. Mrs. DeLano was a long time resident of the city and wife of W.W. DeLano, circulation manager of the Herald-News. The obituary notice will be published Monday. Manitowoc Herald News, Saturday, December 20, 1930 P.4 ******** Mrs. W.W. DeLano, died Saturday afternoon. She had been in poor health for a long time. Barbara Alan was of Scotch-English parentage. She was born in Hillsdale, Mich. in 1848 and educated in the public schools and college of that city. She was the only daughter of Judge Robert T. Alan and was descended from a long line of distinguished jurists, her father being the fifth in the family line to study law and graduated from Oxford University, England. After coming to America, he practiced in Hillsdale, being for many years a circuit judge in Southern Michigan and later judge of probate court in Houghton, Mich. During her life time, the deceased often recalled many interesting episodes of her childhood days when her father rode through miles of forest to hold his court. She remembered him as a great friend of all Indians many of whom came and camped on his estate for days at a time and were pleased to call him the "big chief". It was in 1875 that the family moved to Manitowoc and in 1876 she was married to W. W. DeLano. Five children were born to the couple, all of whom are living: Mortimer R. DeLano of Denver, Colo.; Mrs. Hazel Dunbar, Minneapolis; Mrs. Lorena Peterson, Mesa, Arizona; Mrs. Eva Ohde and Mrs. Irene Milski of this city. There are five grandchildren. Two years ago Mrs. DeLano fell and fractured her hip and from that time to the day of her death was a constant and uncomplaining sufferer and throughout the long weary months which she lay helpless, her patience and fortitude never once departed. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon, Rev. Hood, pastor of St. James Episcopal Church, officiating. Interment was in Evergreen Cemetery. JOHANN DELSMANN (d. 1910) Johnnie, the eighteen-year-old son of Louis Delsman, died at the Holy Family hospital at 7 o'clock Sunday evening. Johnnie had attended the Wisconsin Business college for several months last year and was there this year to finish up his course. On Wednesday he complained of a pain in his side but attended school Thursday. In the evening of that day he grew worse and a doctor was summoned who diagnosed the disease as parendicitis. At the hospital it was found that the disease had already progressed too far so that the operation undertaken was found useless. His death was a shock to his parents, friends and fellow students. Floral contributions for the funeral were given by Mr. Wilson and the students of the business college. The funeral was held in Francis Creek Tuesday. Interment was in the Catholic cemtery. Manitowoc Daily Tribune, Monday, February 28, 1910 P.1 ********* LOSES IN ONE CHANCE OF LIFE John Delsman(sic) Fails to Survive Operation at the Hospital An operation, the one hope of life, failed to save John Delsman, a Kossuth boy and student at the Wisconsin Business College who was stricken by appendicitis four days ago and he succumbed at the hospital Sunday night, twenty-four hours after the operation. The boy, one of the most popular students of the College, complained of being ill last Wednesday and Friday he was removed to the hospital where examination revealed that he was suffering from an advanced attack of appendicitis and there was but one chance for life, the operation. It was found, however, that the infection was so general that the operation was futile and death followed in a short time. Delsman was in robust health up to the time of the fatal attack, played on the basketball team and was one of the leaders in athletics at the college where his death is sincerely mourned by faculty and students. The funeral will be held from St. Anne's church at Francis Creek Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock. Dempsey, two of the city's popular young people were married on Saturday evening at the Sacred Heart parsonage by Rev. O'Leary. The couple unwittingly acknowledged that the wedding was to take place soon on Saturday but refused to commit themselves to the statement that the marriage was to be an event of that evening. For some time past it was known to friends of the couple that the wedding was an event of the near future but how near was not learned until the event took place. During the afternoon, the bride and her sister received friends at tea but no announcement of the plans were made though the air was supercharged with rumors and congratulations were withheld with difficulty. At seven-thirty, carriages at the home took the bride and a small wedding party to the Catholic parsonage where in the presence of only immediate relatives the nuptial knot was tied. Miss Lottie Barnes, a sister and T.L. Kelley were the attendants at the vows. The party returning to the home were surprised by a charivari by friends who took the means of retaliation for the secrecy of the plans. The couple departed on the limited train for Appleton and are at Milwaukee and Chicago for a few days after which they will return to the city and will be at home to friends at the corner of Sixth and St. Clair Streets after Nov. 1. Miss Barnes is a daughter of the late John Barnes and was born and reared in the city. She graduated from the North Side High School and later received a diploma from Grafton Hall, Fond du Lac. Always a student of music she studied a year abroad being a member of Miss Lawrence school at Berlin, Germany. She is a member of the Monday Music Club and has always taken a prominent part in musical circles of the city. Popular with her friends because of a character that has endeared her to many, she will have the well wishes of all in her new state of life. Mr. Dempsey is one of the younger progressive businessmen of the city and is associated with the Manitowoc Pea Packing Company, employed in the capacity of business manager. He too is a life long resident of the city numbering as his friends all who know him and who bespeak for him a career of success and life of happiness with the woman of his choice. The couple will reside at the corner of St. Clair and North Sixth Streets at the home which Mr. Dempsey purchased a number of years ago. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Mon., Sept. 20, 1909

MARY (GILBERT) DEMPSEY PECULIAR COINCIDENT IN DATES MARKS CLOSE OF LIFE OF PIONEER MRS. MARY DEMPSEY’S DEATH, TODAY, ON SAME DATE THAT MARKED HER BIRTH AND DATE ON WHICH SHE WAS MARRIED—WAS 76 YEARS OLD Born on January 24, wedded the same date, Mrs. Mary Agnes Gilbert, widow of the late Michael Dempsey, and an old time resident of the city, answered death’s summons on the same date, the demise of Mrs. Dempsey occurring at the family home, 406 State street, early today. The peculiar coincident of dates marking the three most important events in the life of the decedent, is remarkable. Mrs. Dempsey’s death followed a long illness that had caused a general breakdown and for several days her condition had precluded the possibility of recovery and members of the family had been summoned to her bedside during the past week. Though seriously ill for months, Mrs. Dempsey had made a determined fight against death and several times when it appeared that the end was at hand, she rallied and became better. Early today, however, she lapsed into unconsciousness and death came within a short time. Forty-two years Mrs. Dempsey had been a resident of this city, having come here from Milwaukee where, with her husband, she made her home for many years. She was a native of Ireland and with her parents came to America as a girl of 16 years, the family locating at New York. After marriage Mr. and Mrs. Dempsey came here. Mr. Dempsey died seven years ago. Mrs. Dempsey was the mother of fourteen children, seven sons and seven daughters, all of whom survive being Mrs. K. C. Dover, Chicago; Mrs. W. D. One brother, Gilbert, Oregon, and two sisters, Mrs. Richard Brew, of Milwaukee, and Miss Anna Gilbert, of Colorado Springs, Col., also survive. Mrs. Dempsey was a woman whose home was the central interest in life and she was idolized by her children and respected by a large circle of friends. The funeral of Mrs. Dempsey will be held from Sacred Heart church at 9 o’clock Monday morning. MICHAEL H. DEMPSEY Michael H. Dempsey To Be Buried Friday Michael H. Dempsey, 76, who rose from steward on lake sailing vessels to be president of one of the city’s leading banks, died last night at his home, 916 St. Clair street. Mr. Dempsey, identified with the mercantile, banking and utility affairs of Manitowoc for more than 50 years, has been in failing health since last August. He retired in February as chairman of the Board of the First National Bank, with which he was connected in various offices since 1915. Funeral Friday Funeral services will be held Friday at 8:30 a.m. from the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home and at 9 o’clock from the Sacred Heart church, the Rev. Louis Schorn officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. Mr. Dempsey was born in Milwaukee in 1866, the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Michael Dempsey Sr. He was one of a family of 14 children. When he was a boy his parents moved to this city. He was educated in the elementary schools here and at the age of 13 years took a job on a sailing vessel. He served as steward on many craft that sailed on the Great Lakes in the eighties and early nineties. In 1893 Mr. Dempsey founded the National Cafe at Eighth and Commercial streets and soon became interested in various commercial and industrial projects in the city. When the need for a gas utility in Manitowoc became paramount 43 years ago Mr. Dempsey joined with Henry Vits, Julius Lindstedt and Emil Teitgen in forming the Manitowoc Gas company. In 1900 a little over a year later, the plant was constructed, pipes laid and gas for lighting and cooking was made available to Manitowoc consumers. Later the Manitowoc stockholders sold the gas utility to outside interests. In Merchants’ Group He was also active in the Manitowoc Merchants association and similar organiz- ations and served (Continued on Page 15, Col. 5) MICHAEL DEMPSEY BURIAL FRIDAY (Continued from page 1) On numerous committees that promoted new industries for the city. Mr. Dempsey was one of those who had much to do with the continuation of the county fair after 1911, when President William Rahr turned over the grounds to a Citizen group. He was one of 10 citizens named by President Frank Hoffman of the Citizens association to continue the fair. He aided in raising a $5,000 guarantee fund to carry on the fair, served several terms as vice-president of the Fair Board and in 1918 was elected president. He served until 1936? Stockholders of the First National Bank named Mr. Dempsey a director of the bank in 1915 and in 1920 he was elected president. He served as president until January, 1937, when he retired to become Chairman of the Board. Failing health brought Mr. Dempsey’s retirement from active connection with the bank in February. Despite his busy life in banking, commercial and utility circles, Mr. Dempsey was a great lover of horses. He was one of the founders and an active member for years of the Manitowoc Riding and Driving club which 35 years ago held numerous racing matinees at the fair grounds. He was a member of the Elks lodge and the Fraternal Order of Eagles and for many yeas was active in the Lakeside Country club. RAYMOND DEMPSEY BOY FALLS FROM DOCK INTO RIVER AND MEETS DEATH RAYMOND, SON OF JAMES DEMPSEY, SECOND VICTIM OF SEASON AT NORTH SIDE DOCKS THIS MORNING Another life was sacrificed to the river this morning when Raymond, eight year old son of Mr. and Mrs. James E. Dempsey, while fishing from the dock at the foot of North Seventh street lost his balance and was plunged into the water to meet his death. The body was recovered fifteen minutes after the accident but efforts to revive the boy by use of the pulmotor were unavailing. The Dempsey boy, with a companion, had been at the dock and were to be joined by James, an older brother of the dead lad, who was on his way to the dock at the time the accident happened. The companion of the unfortunate victim of the accident hurrying from the dock to ? an alarm encountered the brother and informed him that Raymond had fallen in and James rushed to the telephone and summoned the police and fire departments and then raced to the dock where he insisted upon diving in an attempt to rescue his brother. He was dissuaded from the action however, and Officer Dueno arrived on the scene in a few minutes, started to drag the river and after a short time recovered the body. With the pulmotor in readiness Drs. Meany and Gleason took charge of the body and worked half an hour in an effort to resuscitate the lad but without success and the child was pronounced dead. Physicians say that it is probable the boy was dead when taken from the water. The boy was eight years of age yesterday. The body was taken in charge by undertakers and later removed to the home of Mr. and Mrs. Jeffreys, Fouth and State streets. Mr. and Mrs. Dempsey, the latter a daughter of Mrs. A.B. Melendy, have made their home in the west for several years and returned here a few months ago to spend the summer, accompanied by their two sons, James and Raymond. The sympathy of many friends will go out to the bereaved parents. The funeral will be held from the Sacred Heart Catholic church at 9 o'clock Monday morning. RUTH DEMPSEY Miss Alice Edwards is here from Minneapolis, called by the serious condition of her sister, Mrs. James Dempsey Jr., for whom slight hopes of recovery are entertained. Manitowoc Herald News, April 12, 1921 P. 1 ******** SAD DEATH OF YOUNG BRIDE OF LESS THAN YEAR Death, at all times sad, seems doubly so in the case of Mrs. James Dempsey, Jr., nee Ruth Edwards, who passed away at the hospital at an early hour today, and the announcement of her demise will be received with keen sorrow by a large circle of friends and awaken the sympathy of the community in which she had always made her home. But 23 years of age and a bride of less than a year, the death of Mrs. Dempsey is pathetically sad. Mrs. Dempsey was born in this city October 30, 1897 and with exception of a few years at Grand Rapids, Mich. had always made her home here. She was married July 31, last year to Jas. Dempsey, Jr. and the young couple have made their home with Mrs. Dempsey's mother, Mrs. Robert Hempton, 116 River Drive. Early in January Mrs. Dempsey was afflicted with the malady which caused her death and although an operation was performed a few days ago, it was futile and death came early today to relieve her of suffering. Although realizing the gravity of her condition and the slender hope for restoration, Mrs. Dempsey was patient and cheerful and the beautiful character of which she was possessed was strengthened by the ordeal through which she passed. The end came peacefully and she passed away as if in sleep. Mr. Dempsey had been employed at the offices of the Manitowoc Shipbuilding Corporation for three years but in January was forced to give up her position and since that time had been confined to her bed. She was a bright, winsome girl, always cheerful and friendly and she won and held friends and the announcement of her untimely death will bring sadness to all who know her. WILLIAM L. DENAULT PEA LODGES IN CHILD'S THROAT AND BOY CHOKES TO DEATH 6 Year Old Lawrence DeNault, Formerly of this City, Victim of Accident-Father Hurt A pea which lodged in his windpipe caused the death yesterday of six year old Lawrence De Nault, son of Mr. and Mrs. George De Nault of Fischerville, town of Gibson. The boy suffocated and died before medical aid could reach him. The accident is the second serious mishap in the DeNault family in less than a week. Last Saturday while returning from a fishing trip. George DeNault, father of the boy, had his hat blown off and in running to the car after recovering his hat, collided with a fish pole which was attached to the side of the car and the point of the pole penetrated his left eye, completely destroying the sight of the optic. The eye was partially torn out and was later replaced by Dr. Aldridge when DeNault was brought to this city late Saturday evening to have his injuries attended to. The sight of the optic has been completely destroyed however. DeNault's son was playing at his home with another boy yesterday and the two had obtained some pea pods and were placing the peas in their mouth and then blowing them out. The boys were in the barn when suddenly there was a cry from the older boy for help and Mr. DeNault who was resting on the bed in the house rushed to the barn to find the six year old son in the throes of death from choking. All efforts to relieve the boy were futile and before anything could be done, the little fellow had passed away. The dead boy is six years old.
