CHARLES T. DOBBERT CLOCK STOPPED AS LIFE ENDED Family Clock Records Hour of Charles Dobbert’s Death on Sunday. PIONEER TANNER OF CITY DEAD. AGED 78 Charles T. Dobbert, pioneer tanner and old resident of the city, died at his home on Water street Sunday from infirmities incident to old age, Mr. Dobbert having attained to the age of 78 when his demise occurred. For some time he had been failing and lately had been very feeble, and death came when the tired and worn body exhausted its vitality. Mr. Dobbert’s death occurred at 4:24 and precisely at that hour the family clock, which had been in possession of the Dobberts for many years, stopped, ceasing its labors with the passing of the life of its owner. For forty years Mr. Dobbert was proprietor of a tannery in the city, and was identified with the early business life of Manitowoc. He was a shoemaker by trade and established the tannery in connection with his business. The plant was located on Thirteenth street where Mr. Dobbert owns considerable other property, including the Addison Hotel which is conducted by his son William. Only recently the tannery plant was torn down to make way for modern structures which will probably be located on the site. Mr. Dobbert retired some years ago and had lived in retirement. Mr. Dobbert was active in business and public affairs in his earlier days, and served as a member of the city council, of the school board and in other positions of trust. He was well and favorably known and was successful in his business. Mr. Dobbert is survived by a family of two sons and three daughters, Charles of Milwaukee, William of this city, the latter conducting the Addison Hotel, Mrs. E. Seitz and Mrs. John Hoyer, this city and Mrs. C. West of Waukegan. Mr. Dobbert’s death removes another of the old residents of the city, in whose ranks death had made rapid inroads in late years. Funeral services will be held from the late home Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock. Manitowoc Daily Herald, July 19, 1909 P. 1 ******* From Der Nord Westen, 22 July 1909: Death from old age debility on Sunday of Carl Theodor Dobbert, one of the oldest and well-known German citizens of our community. The deceased was born 24 December 1830 in Molzahn, Pomerania, and came to America and to Manitowoc in 1851 where he has resided ever since. He opened a shoemaker shop here, but toward the end of the 50’s opened a tannery which he operated with great success until retiring about 15 years ago. He leaves his widow, 2 sons and 3 daughters. A remarkable coincidence occurred when the wall clock stopped at the very moment of Dobbert’s demise. The funeral was held yesterday afternoon. ******** [cause: nephritis]

BARTHELME J. DOLAN PLANS DEATH AS NO WORK IS TO BE FOUND Former Antigo Man, Here for Three Years, Leaves Notes Stating He's Through With World Unemployed for several months and without prospects of securing work at this time, B.J. Dolan, former Antigo man who has been in this vicinity for about three years is believed by authorities to have ended his life by jumping into the Manitowoc river. He left two notes to persons who had befriended him, stating that he was through with the world. In a note to a bowling alley proprietor where he occasionally aided in cleaning the premises he wrote: "Dear Sir; As I am broke and no hope of work I am sending you my tool chest key and watch chain and ring, as I am through with the world.-B.J. Dolan. I am sorry but cannot help it. The tool chest is in Gauger and Heidor's blacksmith shop." SENDS KEY TO TRUNK In another missive evidently mailed early this morning or last night as it, like the other one, has a stamp showing it taken in at 6:30 o'clock this morning, he sent the key to his trunk to the proprietor of the Virginia Buffet, above which Dolan stayed. In the latter note he said: "I am broke and no hope of work. So here is my trunk key and I am through. -B.J. Dolan." According to persons who knew him, Dolan was about 60 years of age, and was a carpenter by trade. He had been unable to secure work since last November and is believed to have expended his entire savings. Although the letters were dated July 15, it is believed that Dolan, if he did carry out the threats, waited another day as he was seen yesterday. Dolan was a short man and wore a beard. His principal diversions were playing solitaire or reading the newspapers but since summer he has been seen about his accustomed haunts only on infrequent occasions. He was a bachelor. Manitowoc Herald News, Thursday, July 17, 1930 P.2 ******** No Trace of Dolan Although search has been continued for B.J. Dolan, former Antigo man who has been in Manitowoc for the past three years, no trace has been found of him following receipt of letters that he was through with the world. Notes were written by Dolan on July 15 and posted early on July 17 but nothing was seen of him since July 16. He is believed to have ended his life by jumping into the Manitowoc river. Dolan originally is from Francis Creek and has a number of relatives here and at Two Rivers. Manitowoc Herald News, Saturday, July 18, 1930 P.2 ******** MISSING MAN IS FOUND IN RIVER B.J. DOOLAN MADE DETAILED JOB OF SUICIDE Heavy Stone Wired to Body to Keep It from Coming to Top; Boat Action Brings Up Body A police theory that B.J. Doolan, itinerant carpenter who disappeared on July 17, had ended his life by leaping into the Manitowoc river was proven true when the lifeless and partly decomposed body of the man was taken from the river at the outer harbor shortly after 8 o'clock this morning. Doolan had gone through with his suicide in a thorough manner and when the body was found floating it was discovered that a piece of limestone, weighing about 40 pounds, had been wired on the man's back in an effort to keep the body from coming to the surface. It is believed that the action of a passing steamer brought the body to the top of the water, the Peter Reiss having passed the scene a short time before the floating body was observed by Joseph Revolinsky of the Reiss coal company. Doolan, a former Antigo man, came to Manitowoc about three years ago after having spent considerable time in railway construction work. He was about 60 years of age and after vainly seeking employment since last November left notes, dated July 15, in which he indicated his intention of ending "it all as he was through." Following the removal of the body from the river, it was turned over to a local undertaker and burial will be made at the expense of relatives here and at Two Rivers. Patrolmen who removed the body of Doolan from the harbor basin this morning expressed their appreciation to Manager George Murphy of the C. Reiss Coal company for his co-operation in sending the company tug with the officers to pick up the body. Had it not been for Murphy's co-operation it would have been necessary to row the unwieldly police boat several blocks. WILLIAM E. DONOHUE Dr. Donohue of Manitowoc Dies; Was 76 Dr. William E. Donohue, veteran physician and surgeon who has practiced in this community for 45 years, died Sunday evening at Holy Family Hospital. He was 76. Dr. Donohue of 932 N. 12 St., had been in ill health over an extended period. The native of Two Rivers was born Dec. 8, 1882, son of the late Patrick and Johanna Garey Donohue. As a young boy he accompanied his parents to Antigo, Wis., where he was graduated from high school. He enrolled at Northwestern University medical school at Evanston, Ill., obtaining his medical degree in 1910. After interning at Mercy and St. Anthony hospitals, Chicago, he came to Manitowoc in 1912. Brings First Microscope He married Anita Carey at Milwaukee Sept. 14, 1921. Dr. Donohue retired from active practice in 1957 and estimated that in that period he had been in the community he had delivered 3,000 babies. When he came to Manitowoc the horse and buggy era was on the way out but he recalled having used that means of conveyance to serve patients. The first microscope was brought to the city by Dr. Donohue in 1913, and he started the laboratory at Holy Family Hospital. He served as president of Holy Family Hospital staff several times and was an honorary member of Memorial Hospital staff. The doctor was honored on February of 1958 by the county medical society. He was presented with a framed citation by the society in which he was lauded for his "many years of dedicated and devoted service to the afflicted. Captain in France One of the highlights of the doctor's career was his election as a fellow in American College of Surgeons in 1937. Manitowoc Herald Times, Tuesday, September 8, 1959 p.2 ********* [d. 09-06-1959/age 76 yrs.] ********* LIEUT. DONOHUE TELLS OF HARROWING SCENES IN HOSPITALS AT BATTLE FRONT ACROSS Local Man Who Served with Medical Corps Says that in One Day 3000 Wounded Were Brought into Hospital Where He Was Stationed Back from seven months service in the field hospitals overseas, Lieut. W.A. Donohue of this city is preparing to ? his practice of medicine in this city and will probably open offices on the south side ? next week. Dr. Donohue has discarded the army uniform which he wore for a year to again don civilian clothes and says that he is happy to be back in the old burg. Dr. Donohue was commissioned a lieutenant in the medical corps last year and for a time was stationed at Camp Funston, Kansas. Seven months ago he was sent overseas and placed in a hospital near Paris and he remained there until he received his orders for transport home. He went to work just before the Chateau Thierry drive and when that began he said there certainly was work, in one five-day period over 3,000 patients were put through the hospital. The patients were brought there directly from the front, after having received first aid treatment and he said many of them were in terrible shape. They would be operated upon and as soon as they were able to be moved were sent to some base hospital for further treatment. He was on duty from 12 o’clock noon until 12 o’clock night and it was one continuous round of operations during the time. There was no chance for rest as help was scarce and there was more than those on duty could take care of. The stretcher bearers were instructed to bring in the worse cases first and frequently he said patients had to wait ten to twelve hours before they could get into the operating room. It was almost a continuous train of cots, lined up right to the operating room door. As soon as a table was vacated the next cot would be moved forward. President Wilson visited the hospital while he was there and noticing that most of the patients were shot either in the arms or legs, inquired why that was. The doctor in charge said, “The others didn’t get this far.” The president didn’t ask any more questions, he said. The hospital was one that had been donated by Mrs. W.K. Vanderbilt and the venerable old lady was right there working every day and he said she was a most admirable nurse. Lieut. Donohue said that it had not been his fortune to meet any of the Manitowoc boys at the front, but upon his return to Paris, preparing to embark for the states, he encountered Maj. A.L. Nash and his brother Francis J. Nash who were in the French capital. The three enjoyed a brief reunion before Lieut. Donohue departed for a port of embarkation. Lieut. Donohue arrived in New York three weeks ago and before returning here visited at Antigo for a week. He is in excellent health but is taking a needed rest before resuming practice. DAN DORAN LIQUOR CLAIMS ANOTHER VICTIM A Sailor While Intoxicated Falls Into the River and is Drowned. COMPANION IS LOCKED UP FOR SAFETY Dan Doren(sic) of Steamer Jay Gould is the Victim—Was His Second Trip on the Steamer At midnight Tuesday the police received a message that a man had fallen into the river. Officers Eggert and Dueno went to the scene and after some efforts succeeded in getting the body of the man on the dock. The testimony tends to show that the party was a sailor that had shipped on the steamer Jay Gould at Chicago under the name of Dan Doren. When the boat laid up here to take a cargo of vinegar from the A. M. KENNETH F. DOREY ABANDON HOPE THAT CLIFTON STILL AFLOAT Lake Tragedy Claimed Three Known Here Is Now Feared CLEVELAND, Sept. 26--A hydroplane, tug and beach patrols were added today to the agencies being employed to find some trace of the whale-back freighter Clifton, now definitely believed to have foundered with her crew of 28 officers and men in the gale which swept Lake Huron Sunday night. “We have abandoned virtually all hope for the safety of the Clifton and her Crew,” E.R, Schneider, general manager of the Progress Steamship company, Cleveland owners, said. Schneider added, however, that officials of his company as well as marine men were unable to understand why, if the Clifton did founder, no wreckage or other evidences of the tragedy had been tossed up on the shores or had not floated to the surface of the lake. In an effort to find some traces of the Clifton, the owners were arranging through the Glenn L. Martin company here to dispatch a hydroplane from Detroit to fly over Lake Huron and its shore lines. Three From Here Aboard. In addition to Chief Engineer W. J. Oertling, former Manitowoc man, two others well known in this city, one a local boy, were aboard the ill-fated vessel and may have lost their lives. Kenneth Dorey, a son of Thomas Dorsey and brother of James Dorey, was second engineer on the Clifton and George Maples of Sturgeon Bay, employed as an oiler aboard the boat, is a brother of Mrs. Aaron Peterson. Dorey, who was 22 years of age and unmarried, had been on the Clifton this season and sailed aboard the boat from Sturgeon Bay with the other 27 members of the crew. Relatives here have received no word from the owners of the boat, although dispatches have been sent to Cleveland asking for definite information. Mrs. Peterson has also communicated with Cleveland in an effort to confirm reports that her brother Mr. Maples, was aboard the boat. W. J. Oertling, former local man was chief engineer of the vessel. Boat Given O.K. A dispatch from Sturgeon Bay says that the boat was inspected two weeks ago and pronounced in first class condition. The wife of the steward, Sam Stevenson, and her infant son, and the father of Capt. Gallagher were aboard the boat according to offices of the Smith Steamship Co., part owners of the Clifton. Manitowoc Herald News, September 26, 1924 P.1 ******** SIGHT WRECKAGE OF LOST CLIFTON BELIEVE CREW OF 28 WENT DOWN WITH STEAMER First Reports Which Seem to Confirm Loss Today CLEVELAND, Sept. 27—Painted sticks of wood possibly part of the railing or wheel house of the whale back freighter Clifton missing since last Sunday were sighted last night twenty-four miles east of Point Au-Barques, Lake Huron, A.E.R. Schneider, general manager of the Progress Steamship Co. Cleveland owners of the vessel, said today. The sticks of wood, painted white, were seen by Captain Frank Perew of the Steamer Peter White, another of the Progress fleet, but his message to headquarters today said the seas were so rough that he was unable to recover the wood for closer examination to determine if it was part of the Clifton… No word Received Here Cleveland dispatches today stating that wreckage of the Clifton had been sighted shattered hope of relatives of Kenneth Dorey, Manitowoc boy who was a member of the crew that the vessel might have escaped. Mrs. A. Peterson, whose brother, George Maples of Sturgeon Bay, was also a member of the crew was another to whom the dispatch brought death of hope which she has entertained that her brother lives. No word has been received by the Dorey family or Mrs. Peterson in response to messages to owners of the Clifton at Cleveland yesterday and it is presumed that they are waiting definite information of the fate of the vessel before replying. Manitowoc Herald News, September 27, 1924 P.1 ******** LOSS OF THE CLIFTON CONFIRMED WRECKAGE ON LAKE TELLS OF FATE OF BOAT Part of Pilot House And Hatches Missing Vessel Found With the finding of hatch covers and the forward end of the pilot house of the steamer Clifton on Lake Huron Sunday, loss of the boat in the storm over the lakes last Sunday is established beyond question. Cleveland, O., dispatches today report the finding of the wreckage of the Clifton by the steamer Glencarin of the Great Lakes Transportation company. No bodes have been recovered. Publication of the dispatches from Cleveland forces abandonment of hope by relatives here that Kenneth Dorey and W. J. Oertling, of this city, members of the crew of the boat, are alive as a week has passed with no word of the locating of members of the crew, if any escaped. George Maples of Sturgeon Bay also lost on the Clifton, is a brother of Mrs. Peterson, wife of Patrolman Aaron Peterson, of the police department. Report of Finding Wreckage. Report of Capt. Hudson of the Glencarin relative to finding of wreckage of the Clifton was made at Cleveland yesterday and says: Encountered wreckage at 4 p.m. on Saturday about seventy miles from Goderich on the detour Goderich course. The wreckage consists of broken hatch covers. In hopes of finding something that could be identified as belonging to some particular vessel we cruised around about two hours. Finally picked up forward end of a pilot house. The pilot house clock and searchlight were attached. The clock registered 4 o’clock Capt. Hudson told Mr. Schneider over the long distance telephone from Goderich, Ontario but whether the boat sank Sunday afternoon or Monday morning is not known. She was last seen passing Mackinaw at 10:20 a.m. Sunday morning enroute from Sturgeon Bay to Detroit laden with stone. Search for Bodies Richard A. There appears to be little hope that any of the bodies will be recovered, although diligent search is being instituted by lake boats while the shores are being patrolled. AUGUSTA DOSE WOMAN WHO WAS CITY CHARGE FOR TWO YEARS FOUND TO HAVE $500 NOTE IN POSSESSION AT HER DEATH Though cared for by the city for nearly two years and sided by the German M.E. church society of which she was a member, Mrs. Augusta Dose, whose death occurred at the hospital, was found to have among her effects at her death a note for $500 and city officials are interested in knowing whether the city will be reimbursed for monies expended in support of Mrs. Dose. Mrs. Dose it is said, told city officials that she was without funds or means of support and upon this representation was cared for at the hospital, it being said that the expense to the city was about $200. The amount would probably have been considerably larger but for the fact that the church society assisted in caring for the aged woman. When Mrs. Dose died and while the body was being prepared for removal the note of $500, said to have been given her by her son in law, a resident of Michigan, was discovered. Whether the city will have any claim upon the note is not determined but it is expected that relatives will reimburse the city for monies expended. Mrs. Dose was 71 years of age and had made her home here for the past 20 years. A daughter at Ludington, Mich., has arrived to take charge of the body which will be buried here. A.C. DOW (aka WIRE DOW) Captain Dow died at his residence in this city yesterday from what is supposed to be glanders. He had been doctoring a horse that had the glander symptoms and soon afterwards was himself taken down. Manitowoc Lake Shore Times, March 13, 1888 p.5 ******* Captain Dow of this city was taken quite seriously sick last week. Physicians found it difficult to determine the nature of his disease until it was learned he was the owner of a horse afflicted with the glanders, and then the dread nature of his disease was only too apparent. His sufferings were very acute and his condition pitiable. Some time ago he purchased a horse from a person living in Sheboygan Falls. The captain was quite a horse trader and seldom kept a horse for any length of time. The horse which he purchased at Sheboygan Falls had been exposed to the glanders, but it is not known whether the disease had manifested itself at the time the purchase was made. Captain Dow contracted the disease from the horse, which he groomed himself. The state veterinarian was telegraphed for to make an examination of the diseased horse. It is said there have been a hew cases of glanders among horses in other portions of the county within the last year. Captain Dow died on Monday of this week. ARTHUR DOW Capt. Arthur E. Dow (photo), master of sailing vessels on the Great Lakes for 42 years until his retirement 26 years ago, died this morning at his home, 724 North Sixth street, following a lingering illness. He was 88. Captain Dow owned and sailed ships out of Manitowoc in the early days when Manitowoc earned the title of Clipper City, because of the type of ships built in yards along the banks of the river here. He and Mrs. Dow observed their 60th wedding anniversary in 1943. Born at Amesbury, Mass., in 1858, he was brought here by his parents when a boy. The son of a seaman, he started on the lakes at the age of 16 years. Soon he skippered his own ships. During the long span of more than two score years on the lakes, Captain Dow owned 15 sailing vessels at various times. These included the Rover, Belle Richmond, Mary R. Ann, Iris, Speed, Midge, Agnes, Restless, Mishicot, Larabina, Augustus and Jesse Martin. The Augustus was the last sailing vessel out of this port. When he retired from the lakes he took up contracting and built several homes in the second ward. He also followed his hobby for sailing by building several small craft in his own workshop at his home. He was a member of the Manitowoc Odd Fellows lodge and the Mantou encampment since the lodge was instituted here in 1907 and has served in several official capacities. Captain Dow married Miss Addie Wetenkamp in 1883. She survives with two daughters, Mrs. Eva Gass of this city and Mrs. Addie Kieselhorst of Mt. Pulaski, Ill.; four sons, Arthur of Chicago, Edward, Herbert and Ray of this city; sister, Mrs. John Woida of Birnamwood, Wis.; and two grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Frazier mortuary chapel, the Rev. Ernst Brittain of the St. Paul’s Methodist church officiating. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery. The Odd Fellows will conduct rites at the grave. The body may be viewed at the mortuary after 2 p.m. Wednesday. Manitowoc Herald Times, September 17, 1946 P. 2 ******** [Arthur E./d. 09-17-1946/age 88 yrs./bur. on A.E. Dow lot] ******** CAPT. ARTHUR DOW ROUNDS OUT FORTY YEARS ON THE LAKES Local Man Was Master at Age of 19 and Has Record of Having Lost But One Boat in 36 Years as Commander Capt. Arthur E. Dow, of this city, master and owner of the schooner Augustus, this season rounds out his fortieth year as a lake mariner. The genial skipper is now 54 years and looks ten years younger. He commenced sailing when fourteen years of age, and went as master when nineteen. During this long period he has missed but one trip and is usually one of the first to be out in the spring, staying out until the ice forms. Capt. Dow also has an exceptionally good record with his boats, having lost but one during his life, - the schooner La Rabida on the north shore of Lake Michigan about six years ago - and this was not through his own fault. Capt. Dow has long since garnered enough of this world's goods to make it unnecessary for him to continue his labors, but he says "if I should quit this life I would rust out in a couple of years." One of the things that gives Capt. Dow much satisfaction is the fact that during his 35 years as master he has continued to trade with the same people at the same ports, which speaks volumes for his reputation as a fair and square dealer. Capt. Dow, who resides at 724 N. Sixth street, has owned and sailed a number of boats during his career on the lakes, and is one of the best known mariners of this section. Manitowoc Daily Herald, June 27, 1913 p.8 ********** Capt. Dow of Manitowoc was severely injured in a runaway in the Town of Carlton, Kewaunee county one day last week, while on his way to Sturgeon Bay. His horse became frightened at some object in the road and ran into a barbed wire fence against which Capt. Dow was thrown with great force. He was found some time later in an unconscious condition and was taken to a farmer's house near by where a physician was summoned to attend him. His face was terribly cut and his body was badly bruised. He was able to be taken home a few days later. The Chronicle, Tues., Jan. 9, 1900
