Then you must not grieve so sorely, For I love you dearly still; Try to look beyond earth’s shadows, Pray to trust our Father’s Will. There is work still waiting for you. So you must not idly stand; Do it now, while life remaineth, You shall rest in Jesus’ land. When that work is all completed, He will gently call you Home; Oh, the rapture of that meeting. Oct.15—Aware that he was to be replaced by a lower-salaried man because of business conditions, W. Christensen for several years manager of the canning factory at Colby, committed suicide last night by inhaling chloroform. He left a note for his wife explaining this and adding that “I looked in the mirror and I looked sick, so I decided to kill myself.” Christensen left a bridge game at the home of friends and went to his office where he committed the act. Former Local Man News of the tragedy carried in the above dispatch came as a shock to hosts of friends of “Bill” Christensen in this city where he was widely known, having been a former resident here and a brother of Charles Christensen whom he visited frequently, the last time only a few weeks ago…(sic--Some words missing.)…readily been engaged upon retirement in this city and had been in the canning business for years, having formerly been in charge of plants of the Lakeside Canning Co. of this city at northern points and at one time manager of the Reedsville Canning Co., the Colby plant, which Mr. Christensen had managed for a number of years, was recently disposed of to the Libbey McNeil Company and it had been rumored that Mr. Christensen was to retire. Brother There at Time Mr. and Mrs. Charles Christensen were at Colby for a visit at the time of the tragedy, having departed for that city Monday. He is survived by his wife, who was Lillian Hacker and one son, William, Jr., who is a student at the University of Wisconsin. It is believed by friends that Mr. Christensen’s mind had been temporarily affected, as he was known as an experienced and capable man in his business and would have readily been engaged upon retirement at Colby which plant he had built up. MARGRETHE CHRISTENSON ANOTHER OF CITY PIONEERS PASSES AWAY Widow of Capt. Peter Christenson Called To Rest The death of Mrs. Magrethe Christenson, 815 State street, Wednesday evening, May 14, at 7:45 removes another of the old and well known pioneer mothers of Manitowoc. The deceased was born December ?1, 1846, in the parish of Gjerpen, Norway, a daughter of Niels Anderson and wife Turine Berberg, together with whom and two brothers, Erik and Andrews, and a sister, the late Mrs. Andrew Hanson, she arrived at Manitowoc July 13, 1855. The family settled near the spot on State street where the Christenson home now stands, and where the deceased spent nearly 69 years of her life. In 1867 she was united in marriage to Captain Peter Christenson, well known among the men who owned and operated both sail and steam vessels at this port. The husband passed away May 17, 1917. Active in Church. Mrs. Christenson was an active member of the First Luthern (sic) church and one of the earliest members of its ladies' aid society. She was mentally alert, a great reader, had a fine memory and to the very last retained a lively interest in the affairs of her family, her many friends, and the affairs of the church and of the city. In 1892 she spent six months on ????? to and in Norway to seek health for herself and for her daughter. Her health had always been delicate, but she possessed wonderful vitality, and retained a remarkable cheerful disposition during her many years of ill health. During the past two and a half years she has been practically helpless and has spent most of the time in bed. Devoted care was given her by her own family and by competent nurses. Her strength ebbed away gradually, but she retained her mental vigor to the last, and the spirit departed in a final quiet sleep. She leaves to mourn for her, her daughter, Mrs. Chas. Solveson, 811 State street, this city; her granddaughter, Mrs. C.J. Primm, and great grandson John Kenton Primm of Chicago, Adolph W. Hanson of this city and his sister, Mrs. Moe, of Decorah, Ia., are other near relatives. OSCAR CHRISTENSON (d. 1899) DEATH COMES SUDDENLY. Oscar Christensen(sic) Drops Dead While Working on Christopher Columbus. Oscar Christensen, a carpenter employed on the whaleback Christopher Columbus at the Burger shipyards, fell dead while at work this morning. Death was almost instantaneous and was caused by some trouble of the heart. The deceased went to work this morning in the best of spirits. He had not complained of feeling poorly and had been laughing and talking just a few moments before he died. About ten o'clock while sitting down boring a hole in a timber he fell backwards. A workman next to him caught him in his arms. He did not speak and after gasping for a few moments showed no signs of life. Drs. Lubman and Paine were called and examined the body. They said death was due to a paralysis of the heart. Justice Falge and constable Emil Streich held an inquest shortly before noon. The jury was composed of Messrs. John Arnold, Herman Schuette, Albert Neubauer, Carl Hanse, Otto Herman and H.G. Rudie. They brought a verdict in accordance with the doctors decision. As calmly and peacefully as one lying down to pleasant dreams, William Christenson passed from earth at 6 o'clock last evening at the home of his mother on North Ninth street. BERTHA CHRISTIANSEN The wife of Mr. Christiansen of this city died on Tuesday of this week. She was a young woman of estimable qualities. Manitowoc Pilot Thursday, Aug. 18, 1881 ******** CHRISTIANSEN—In this city, Aug. 16th, BERTHA wife of M. CHRISTIANSEN in the 29th year of her age. While the summer breezes are still wantonly toying amid the beauties of nature in their fullness and glory, there are a few upon whose sense of hearing the soft footsteps of death awakens ??? Still, the silent wanderer strays about and while his gentle touch shuts out the light of love from eyes that are weary, hushes the throb of hearts warm with affection, healing and soothing on the one hand, lacerating and wounding on the other, time rolls on, material nature changes its form, and God calls that to his keeping and care that is immortal and sprung from the fountain of his great joys and goodness. Tuesday found our neighbor, Mr. M. Christiansen and his little seven year old daughter standing beside the lifeless remains of a dearly beloved wife and affectionate mother. It was but a short struggle, a few hours and a separation was consummated having but memory to turn its sorrowful loss to the past of happy years and hope, to dream its possibilities of a reunion of hearts in the unknown hereafter. Mrs. C. was a true woman, a true, affectionate wife and mother, and her departure from life an irreparable loss to the hearts that fondly lived in the sunshine of her genial nature. May the beneficent Author of our being, whose hand tempers the wind to the born lamb comfort father and child in their hour of mourning, we can but extend our sympathy. Captain Christiansen was taken ill at his desk in the station last Tuesday. He submitted to an operation Monday morning at the hospital. Three members of the department, Police Chief J.J. Kuplic, Sgt. Clarence Tomchek and officer Anton Glysch, donated blood for use in a transfusion in an effort to save his life. Captain Christiansen was also a member of Company H, Wisconsin national guard from 1905 to 1908. He married Miss Minnie Tech in 1906. He began his duties in the police department patrolling a night beat in the first ward in the days when the only motive power was a horse drawn patrol wagon. He had seen the department grow to its present facilities including police radio, squad cars, motorcycles, motor ambulances and special signaling devices to contact officers in all parts of the city. Captain Christiansen had served under four chiefs, Mr. Drews, George Groffman, Anton Trochelell and Police Chief J.J. Kuplic. Friendly Officer After covering a night beat for 12 years Captain Christiansen was assigned a day beat and was promoted to detective in 1924 and served until 1928, when he received the rank of captain and a desk job in the office. In his years as a patrolman he won the unofficial title of "Manitowoc's friendliest citizen" and was always a great favorite with children. He took the fear of a police officer from the minds of many of his young friends by his friendly attitude and sound advice. In 1946 Captain Christiansen was honored by his fellow officers on completing 40 years of service, and presented with a ring in a surprise ceremony at the police station. He was a member of the Knights of Pythias. Surviving are his wife, a son, Lloyd, of this city; an uncle, Prof. Fred Christiansen of Shoto and two grandchildren.
