A 2 ********* BOYS WHO SET OUT TO SEE WORLD, BACK IN DAY, HUNGRY AND PENITENT JUDGE IS TOLD With tears streaming down his face, a manly looking little youth of 12 summers told county Judge John Chloupek this morning that he had lost all desire to roam and likewise all desire to ride a bicycle. He was Tommy Braasch, 908 So. Twentieth street, who with Gilbert Meisner, 14 year old Manitowoc Route 1 boy, left the home of their parents at 7 o’clock Monday night on a tour ‘of the world.’ Hungry, foot and back sore, the two were picked up at 10 o’clock last night by Sheriff Beduhn and Deputy Charles Ladwig as they were wearily trudging their way along Highway 141 about eight miles north of the city at 10 o’clock last night. According to the story sobbed out by young Braasch, he and the Meisner boy, on a purloined bicycle, left the city, bound for the north. That night they reached Francis Creek and spent the night in the garage building of the church. Bright and early Tuesday morning they started for Green Bay, arriving there about 3 o’clock in the afternoon. Meisner doing all the peddling up and down the hills, with Braasch uncomfortably squirming on the handle-bars. They spent the day in Green Bay but the pangs of hunger drove them homeward and they started the return trek to Manitowoc. Frequently drawing up their belts, as Tommy says “I tell you Judge, we had to pull our belts up pretty often” the youthful adventurers started for home but at Denmark were too tired to continue much father. They saw a woman and told her of their hunger and she gave each of them a piece of pie. Re-enforced physically and spiritually, the homeward ride was resumed and continued until they were picked up by the sheriff and brought to the city and their parents notified. Nothing to eat except apples they could pick up along the way and the one piece of pie in almost twenty-four hours after they left home is nothing for a growing boy according to young Braasch and he will never again roam, he said. And he never wants to sit on a bicycle. “I’m so sore from sitting on the handle bars Judge,” he said this morning. Braasch was taken to his home by his mother but Meisner was being detained until it could be learned where he secured a gun and a revolver which he had when he left Manitowoc. The revolver was still in his possession when he was brought to the city. The boys slept the sleep of the just last night and today were none the worse for their experiences but are sadder and wiser boys. “They’re just regular boys,” Judge Chloupek said this morning after the story had been told. ADOLPH J. BRACHMANN WOMAN’S SLAIN; FIND MAN’S BODY Double Death Result of Spat Mrs. Mary Raedig (sic) Beaten With Shaker; Roomer Takes His Life Letters in Home Indicate Adolph Brachman Had Plotted Murder and Intended to Kill Himself The body of Adolph Brachman, 62, who left two letters threatening suicide near the battered body of his landlady and close friend, Mrs. Mary Raedig, 64, in her home at 911 South Tenth street Tuesday evening, was found floating in the Manitowoc river at 1:15 this afternoon. The letters, addressed to his own son, Ralph, of this city, and to Richard Raedig, son of the slain woman indicated to police that the pair had quarreled and contained statements by Brachman to the effect that he would take his own life. The body was noticed floating in the river about 100 feet east of the Eighth street bridge by D. L. MacLennan and Louis Reime aboard a tug of the McMullen and Pitz Construction company. They summoned Police Office Milton Larson who was crossing the bridge. The body was secured to a line off the tug and brought to the foot of South Ninth street where Captain of Detectives Frank Tomchek, Detective Elmer Scherer, District Attorney Fred G. Dicke and Coroner Theodore Teitgen, all of whom had worked on the case during the morning hours, viewed the body and identified it as Brachman. Mrs. Raedig, victim in the murder- suicide was a dishwasher in a Manitowoc restaurant. Find Two Letters Two letters dated Sept. 2 and signed by Adolph Brachman, who rented a room in the slain woman’s house, were found on a table a short distance from the body by Detective Captain Frank Tomchek and Police Lt. William Herman who discovered the badly battered corpse on the floor in the living room after they had forced their way into the small first floor apartment this morning In one of the letters, addressed to his son, Ralph, of this city, Brachman, divorced from his wife for a number of years, said: “I can’t stand this any longer…She was good to me but has turned me out now… I am giving up this world and am going where we will all go someday ..I can’t write any more now but you can guess how I feel…I thought so much of her.” Someone Else Mixed In In the second letter, addressed to Richard Raedig (sic) of this city, a son of the victim, Brachman wrote: “I lived in the house for two years and she treated me good and we got along good… Recently someone else mixed in and she is no more the same dear Mary…She stepped out after all I did for her…I am giving up and going where we all go some day…I hope to meet her there.” On the strength of the letters, Chief of Police James Kuplic and District Attorney Fred G. Dicke said Brachman had taken his own life—after writing the notes. Dicke said that he had questioned Brachman’s former wife who lives here but was told she had not seen him for some time. Heard Dog Howling Police were first called into the case this morning when William Duffy, a neighbor of Mrs. Raedig’s, called the station with the information that he and his wife were sitting on their front porch Tuesday evening when they noticed the woman, a dish- washer at the Midget café on Franklin street, come home alone. Shortly afterward, Duffy said, they heard three faint calls for help from inside the house. They did not investigate, however, but a dog that kept up a continual barking throughout the night prompted him to summon police this morning. When Detective Tomchek and Lt. Herman arrived at the small house at eight o’clock they found all of the doors locked and gained entry through a back window. In the front living room, Tomchek said, they found the blood-covered body of the woman, a deep gash in her skull, lying on the floor along the wall which was splattered with blood. (snip) No Evidence of Fight While there is little evidence of a struggle in the small front room, police theorize that Brachman and Mrs. Raedig entered into an argument after she returned to the house early last evening. Tomchek said that he apparently wrote the two letters threatening suicide following the bludgeoning of the woman. Dr. Teitgen said that the woman, whose husband, Charles Raedig, died about nine years ago, had been a patient of his. She was the mother of a large family and had moved into the South Tenth street house about two years ago. Funeral arrangements for Mrs. Raedig had not been made by press time this afternoon. She was born Mary Kieselhorst in the town of Liberty about 64 years ago. She is survived by five sons, Charles, Herman, Joseph, Richard and Adolph A. Raedig, all of Manitowoc, and a brother, Louis Kieselhorst of Manitowoc. Brachman was employed as a joiner-carpenter at the Burger Boat company at various periods between 1944 and the present time. Previous to that he had been employed at the Manitowoc Ship Building company… Manitowoc Herald Times, September 3, 1947 P. 1 ******** Police Chief Calls Double Tragedy Murder, Suicide (snip/mostly repeat from original story) Brachman Rites Friday Funeral services for Adolph Brachman, 63, also private, will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at the Pfeffer funeral home, with burial in Evergreen cemetery. AMY TOPIC BRADY Amy Topic Brady, 95, a lifelong resident of Manitowoc, died peacefully at her home on Friday morning, Dec. 21. Amy was born on July 24, 1917, at the Holy Family Hospital in Manitowoc, the daughter of Hattie (Vits) and Joseph Topic. The family lived in St. Louis from 1921 to 1924, and then settled in Manitowoc. Amy attended Manitowoc schools, graduating from Lincoln High School in 1935. She went on to the National College of Education (now National Louis University) in Evanston, Ill., graduating in 1939. After college, she taught elementary school in Port Washington and Milwaukee County for four years. On June 28, 1944, Amy married First Lieutenant Charles Peter Brady of Manitowoc at the First Presbyterian Church. Following his medical discharge from the U.S. Army in 1945, Mr. Brady joined the Hougen, Brady and Murphy law firm, and the couple settled in Manitowoc. There they raised four children and were both involved in community affairs. Amy was active in the First Presbyterian Church. Following in her mother's footsteps, she served the church officially and unofficially throughout her life, including in a number of leadership roles. She was the church's first female elder in the 1960s, and enjoyed serving as the "antique," as she put it, on the church's Sesquicentennial Committee in 2001. She prepared and delivered a memorable presentation on the church through the years at the 150th anniversary celebration on May 27, 2001. A member of Chapter J of the P.E.O. sisterhood since 1947, Amy hosted numerous luncheon meetings in her home. As the longest-standing member of the Chapter, she was looked to as the group's unofficial historian, and was honored at a special celebration of her 60th anniversary in 2007. Amy was a voracious reader, and had been a member of the Clio Club since 1946. She was also active in the Junior Service League of Manitowoc County for more than 50 years, and a supporter of the Manitowoc Public Library, the Manitowoc Historical Society and the Domestic Violence Center. Since 1953, Amy enjoyed summers with her family at their cottage in Three Lakes, WI. There she participated in Three Lakes Women's Club activities and had a wide circle of friends of all ages. Amy is remembered by her family and many friends as an elegant woman with a keen mind and delightful sense of humor who was unfailingly kind and generous. Besides raising four children, she developed many talents over the years, including water- color painting, knitting and gardening. She enjoyed a game of bridge, playing regularly into her 90s. An excellent cook and hostess, she enjoyed entertaining. Amy was always interested in others; a good listener and great conversationalist, she relished social gatherings. Family members remember Amy as the magnet that held them all together over the years. They credit her gentle strength, her ecumenical spirit and her love of life for the treasure trove of happy memories each has and for the sheer fun they have always had at eagerly anticipated family gatherings. Amy was predeceased by her sister, Edith, who died in 1924 at age 9; her parents; and her husband, Charles, who died in 1978. She is survived by her four children, Susan (and her husband, Ramtanu) Maitra of Leesburg, Va.; Mary (and her husband, Paul) Goldstein of Leesburg, Va.; Charles (and his wife, Elizabeth) Brady of Lake Elmo, Minn.; and Barbara (and her husband, Elliot) Eisenberg of Washington, D.C.; eight grandchildren, Sabita and Ranjan Maitra; Michael and Daniel Goldstein; Peter Brady; and Ezra, Lisa and Ruthie Eisenberg; one great-grandchild, Zev Eisenberg; and three nieces, Sally (Murphy) Morris, Anne (Murphy) West, and Catherine (Murphy) Hoag. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. Friday, December 28, 2012 at the First Presbyterian Church, 502 N. 8th St. Manitowoc. The Rev. Dr. Matthew L. Sauer will officiate with burial to follow at the Evergreen Cemetery. Relatives and friends may call at the church on Friday from 9:30 a.m. until the time of services at 11:00 a.m. The Jens Family Funeral Home and Crematory is assisting the Brady family with funeral arrangements. Online condolences may be expressed at www.jensreinboldandpfeffer.com. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Amy's name may be sent to the Domestic Violence Center, 300 East Reed Ave., Manitowoc WI 54220. Amy's family gives special thanks to the compassionate caregivers (whom Amy referred to as her "angels") and devoted friends who made it possible for her to remain at home until the end, as was her wish. W. EVERETT BRANDT DEATH CAME AS HE PLANNED TO RETURN HOME W. Everett Brandt, of this City Passes Away at Milwaukee Another of Life’s unexplainable tragedies, when youth is made victim by the grim spectre, came in the death late yesterday of William Everett Brandt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Brandt of this city, at Milwaukee where he had been for two weeks receiving treatment. Just entering upon the threshold of manhood, with education and qualifications that bespoke a successful career, he was stricken down and within a few brief weeks, marked by Death for its own. News of the critical illness of Mr. Brandt was received yesterday morning when members of the family were summoned to his bedside at Muirdale sanitarium, came as a shock to friends who while aware of his illness, were unacquainted with the seriousness of his condition and when news of the death was received later in the day it awakened keenest sympathy for the bereaved parents and sisters. Mr. Brandt’s death occurred at 3 o’clock and was peaceful, he having been conscious to the very end. He had planned to return to his home here this week and in letters only a day or two previously had revealed this plan, believing that he was improving and that he would make more rapid gains at home. Even when members of the family arrived at Muirdale he reiterated his intention to come home but the home coming was different than he had anticipated. Funeral on Saturday The body was brought here from Milwaukee last evening and taken to the family home on North Tenth street. Funeral service will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o’clock from the Presbyterian church where the body will be taken at noon Saturday, no services being held at the home. The Rev. M.S. Weber will officiate and burial will be at Evergreen. Mr. Brandt was born in this city on May 21, 1904, being 21 at his death. He attended the local schools and later when his parents removed to Marshfield continued his studies there but returned here to enter the high school for three years. He graduated from the Fond du Lac high school in June 1931 and was a member of the champion debating school team of the state and of the Inner circle and circle Forum. He became interested in newspaper work, which his father follows and for a time was a reporter on the Herald-News but later went to the Aluminum Goods company where he was employed in the advertising department. But the lure of the printer’s ink was strong and he returned to newspaper work, being employed on the Wausau Record Herald and later the Iron Mountain News. A few months ago he returned here and was with the Huppert Auto company as a salesman at the time his health broke and two months ago he was forced to give up his work and since that time had been in steady declined until the end came yesterday. Ardent Sport Fan Mr. Brandt has always been an ardent sport fan and much of his newspaper work was in that department. As a boy he was mascot for the old championship Manitowoc team and later mascot of the Marshfield team, Valley champions. He was a close follower of local and national sports and was well posted and keenly alive to the events as they occurred. Mr. Brandt is survived by his parent and by three sisters, Lucile, Helene and Jane, all of this city. His death is a great shock in the family and will arouse the deepest sympathy of the community where he was so well known and had spent most of his short life. To those of us who, through association with his work, knew Everett Brandt best, he was recognized as a young man for whom the future held bright promise. Possessed of qualifications that fitted him for a career, he was keenly alert and energetic and maturing years would have brought him to realization of the ambitious future which he had planned. His death at a time when life was happiest and the future bright with hope, is a sad one. Manitowoc Herald News, November 6, 1925 P. 10

FRANK BRAUN FRANK BRAUN, LAST G.A.R. VETERAN, IS DEAD FULL MILITARY RITES PLANNED ON WEDNESDAY Civil War Veteran Was The Last Surviving Member of Local G.A.R. The H.M. Walker Post of the Grand Army of the Republic, which at one time enrolled scores of Civil war veterans, became just a memory on Monday with the death of Frank Braun, 92, last surviving member of the post. An invalid for the past two years, Mr. Braun died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Herman, on the Town Line road. Following the oft-expressed wish of the deceased, a full military funeral is to be accorded the veteran, who fought through the four years of the Civil war, after running away from home to enlist in the First Wisconsin Regiment at Milwaukee. Six military and semi-military organizations will participate in the rites and the remains will be borne to their last resting place on a military caisson drawn by four horses. Services will be Wednesday afternoon. Victim of a stroke over two years ago, Mr. Braun was still able to retain many of his faculties and never tired going over the stirring scenes of his Civil war career to (photo) the hosts of his visitors that called on him at the home of his daughter. Those included not only the campaigns of the Union armies in the western theater of war in Tennessee and Georgia but also his thrilling escape from Andersonville prison, toward the close of the war. TO HONOR LAST VET Various organizations joined today to provide the late Frank Braun, last veteran of the H.M. Walker Post of the G.A.R. here, with military funeral on Wednesday. The American Legion, Spanish War veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars will each provide two pallbearers. Company E, 127th Infantry, will attend in a body. The War Mothers and Women's Relief corps will also turn out. The body will be borne on a military caisson to the Wesley M.E. church at 2 p.m. on Wednesday where funeral services will be held. Interment will be at Evergreen. Born in Germany Frank Braun was born 92 years ago on the Rhine in Germany. His father preceded him to America; locating north of what was then the village of Manitowoc and he made the trip to this country alone when a boy of 16 years. Three years later the Civil war broke out but Braun was not of age and could not enlist here. Determined to enroll in the Union armies, Braun made his way to Milwaukee, where he succeeded in enrolling in Company D, First Wisconsin Regiment. This regiment was one of the first sent to turn back the Confederate threat along the Mississippi. His regiment became a part of the Union forces under General U.S. Grant, who was named to the command of the Army of Western Tennessee which featured the battle at Shiloh, and Lookout Mountain. Through the long years of the Civil war Braun continued to serve until he was taken prisoner and confined in Andersonville prison along with 35,000 other Union prisioners for a period of 14 months. Then as the long struggle drew to a close, Braun made his escape from the rebel prison and made his way north, returning to his home in Manitowoc county. Wed in 1868 It was in 1868 that he was married to Miss Sophie Hardrath of the town of Kossuth and they located on a farm in that town, after Mr. Braun had worked for a short time in a brewery at Branch. Mrs. Braun died 32 years ago. Then years ago the deceased came to make his home with his daughter, Mrs. William Herman, north of the city. Up until a few years ago he continued to join with his comrades of the H.M. Walker post of the G.A.R. in the annual observance of Memorial Day here. Two years ago his health was such that he could not make the annual turnout. This year before he had joined with Jacob Williams in a special observance, they being the two last surviving members of the G.A.R. post here. Mr. Williams was fatally injured several months ago near Valders leaving Mr. Braun as the last survivor of the Walker post. Survivors are Mrs. William Herman, a daughter, Emil Braun, a son on the homestead farm in the town of Kossuth, three sisters, Mrs. Frank Felzer Sr., Mrs. Frank Neuser, and Miss Helen Braun, all of the town of Kossuth, and seven grandchildren. Rites Wednesday The remains are at the Shimek and Schwartz funeral home where they may be viewed up to 1:30 p.m. Wednesday when they will be taken to Wesley M.E. church for services at 2 p.m. All the organizations will gather at the funeral home with the exception of Company E which will form at the armory at 12:45 p.m. and march to the funeral home to join the others there for the march to the church. The Women's Relief Corps will hold services for Comrade Braun at 7:30 o'clock tonight at Shimek and Schwartz funeral home. Manitowoc Herald Times, Manitowoc, Wis. Tuesday, September 5, 1933 P. 2 ********* [Frank Xavier/cause: exhaustion from age] ********* Frank Braun, a veteran of the civil war and who has interesting experiences to relate regarding the time he was held at Libby prison, when a mere boy and a prisoner of war, now making his home at Francis Creek, left yesterday to pay his annual visit to a daughter residing at Racine. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Tuesday, January 16, 1917, Page 3 ********* FRANK BRAUN, WAR VETERAN RECALLS ESCAPE FROM SOUTHERN PRISON ON HIS 80TH BIRTHDAY Residing at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William M. Hermann, near the northern city limits, among pleasant surroundings, Frank Braun, pioneer resident of this county, yesterday celebrated the eightieth anniversary of his birth, relatives and friends gathering to extend contratulations. Mr. Braun has a war record of which he may justly feel proud. He was but nineteen years old when he responded to Lincoln's call to arms at the beginning of the civil war, enlisting in Co. D, First Wisconsin Vol. regiment in Milwaukee. He saw four years of hard service and has many exciting experiences to relate. The most harrowing of his exper- iences, however, was the time he spent as a prisoner of war, confined in the prison barracks of Andersonville. The prisoners were treated brutally and starved, the rebs finding it difficult at times to properly provide for them- selves. While in camp there Mr. Braun met Hershel D. Smalley, drummer boy of this city who had also been captured, and the warm friendship that grew up ensued has endured until the present day. There came a time when Braun was detailed to the commis (faded) partment upon his claim that he knew something of butchering having helped his father along this line on the farm, and while thus employed he had opportunity to smuggle many a choice morsel to his friend Hershel. While in camp Mr. Braun made several attempts to escape though without avail, but his opportunity came at last. It was at a time when a thousand prisoners suffering with disease were to be exchanged for a like number of invalids held in northern camps. As a helper in the commissary department he was considered a trusty and wore the proper insignia on his cap. As such he busied himself aiding the nurses in placing the invalids into wagons to be transported to a river steamer. One of the invalids died on the way and Braun impersonated him having known him by name in camp. He groaned and hobbled along with the other poor fellows. When the dead man's number was called he responded and was taken aboard the boat. Had he been caught it would have meant certain death for him, having violated the rules of parole. But the opportunity warranted taking the desperate chance. After having sufficiently recuperated from his experiences he returned to the service. Mr. Braun is carrying his burden of four score years lightly and enjoying the best of health. He is one of the last of the old guard left in the ranks of the local G.A.R. post and his likeness appeared as fifth in line from left to right on the photo published in yesterday's Herald-News. ANNA BRAUNREITER Consumption took the life Saturday, after many months of illness, of 29-year old Mrs. Frank Braunreiter, a resident of North 22nd Street. Especially grievous is the fact that 2 of the deceased’s children were suffering from smallpox at the same time. It is of the mildest strain but there is concern when it is overlaid with sadness over their mother’s death. Because they were under quarantine, only a closed funeral could be held with just the immediate next of kin permitted to attend. MABEL ELIZABETH (SUMMY) BRAY DIED. Mrs. Mabel Elizabeth Bray, (nee Summy) born near the city of Lancaster, Penn. April 20, 1858, and was married in Vinton, Iowa Aug. 17, 1878, to Rev. Henry T. Bray. At Easter 1884 she began to waste away and continued to do so steadily until her death on the 2nd. inst at 6:30 p.m. In Sept. she visited her parents in Iowa returning in Oct. and was confined to her room from that time until released by a happy death. And although having a kind and beloved husband and three children of tender age to whom she was much attached she said she was ready and willing to go, that there was no darkness in the valley and no pain--that Jesus would care for them and wipe away all tears--saying to Mr. Bray that he must omit no services on account of her death but be willing to give up all for the sake of Jesus. Her last words were "Blessed Savior, I know that he will take care of me." Well might this triumphant death have been expected by those who had seen and known her worth as a pure hearted and true woman, a loving mother, a devoted Christian, a rector's wife whose death leaves a void in the family and parish that it will be hard to fill. To the bereaved rector with three children of tender age, the loss is irreparable notwithstanding the warm sympathy shown by all, and for which they are heartily thankful.
