FRANK BRAUN FRANK BRAUN, LAST G.A.R. VETERAN, IS DEAD FULL MILITARY RITES PLANNED ON WEDNESDAY Civil War Veteran Was The Last Surviving Member of Local G.A.R. The H.M. Walker Post of the Grand Army of the Republic, which at one time enrolled scores of Civil war veterans, became just a memory on Monday with the death of Frank Braun, 92, last surviving member of the post. An invalid for the past two years, Mr. Braun died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. William Herman, on the Town Line road. Following the oft-expressed wish of the deceased, a full military funeral is to be accorded the veteran, who fought through the four years of the Civil war, after running away from home to enlist in the First Wisconsin Regiment at Milwaukee. Six military and semi-military organizations will participate in the rites and the remains will be borne to their last resting place on a military caisson drawn by four horses. Services will be Wednesday afternoon. Victim of a stroke over two years ago, Mr. Braun was still able to retain many of his faculties and never tired going over the stirring scenes of his Civil war career to (photo) the hosts of his visitors that called on him at the home of his daughter. Those included not only the campaigns of the Union armies in the western theater of war in Tennessee and Georgia but also his thrilling escape from Andersonville prison, toward the close of the war. TO HONOR LAST VET Various organizations joined today to provide the late Frank Braun, last veteran of the H.M. Walker Post of the G.A.R. here, with military funeral on Wednesday. The American Legion, Spanish War veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars will each provide two pallbearers. Company E, 127th Infantry, will attend in a body. The War Mothers and Women's Relief corps will also turn out. The body will be borne on a military caisson to the Wesley M.E. church at 2 p.m. on Wednesday where funeral services will be held. Interment will be at Evergreen. Born in Germany Frank Braun was born 92 years ago on the Rhine in Germany. His father preceded him to America; locating north of what was then the village of Manitowoc and he made the trip to this country alone when a boy of 16 years. Three years later the Civil war broke out but Braun was not of age and could not enlist here. Determined to enroll in the Union armies, Braun made his way to Milwaukee, where he succeeded in enrolling in Company D, First Wisconsin Regiment. This regiment was one of the first sent to turn back the Confederate threat along the Mississippi. His regiment became a part of the Union forces under General U.S. Grant, who was named to the command of the Army of Western Tennessee which featured the battle at Shiloh, and Lookout Mountain. Through the long years of the Civil war Braun continued to serve until he was taken prisoner and confined in Andersonville prison along with 35,000 other Union prisioners for a period of 14 months. Then as the long struggle drew to a close, Braun made his escape from the rebel prison and made his way north, returning to his home in Manitowoc county. Wed in 1868 It was in 1868 that he was married to Miss Sophie Hardrath of the town of Kossuth and they located on a farm in that town, after Mr. Braun had worked for a short time in a brewery at Branch. Mrs. Braun died 32 years ago. Then years ago the deceased came to make his home with his daughter, Mrs. William Herman, north of the city. Up until a few years ago he continued to join with his comrades of the H.M. Walker post of the G.A.R. in the annual observance of Memorial Day here. Two years ago his health was such that he could not make the annual turnout. This year before he had joined with Jacob Williams in a special observance, they being the two last surviving members of the G.A.R. post here. Mr. Williams was fatally injured several months ago near Valders leaving Mr. Braun as the last survivor of the Walker post. Survivors are Mrs. William Herman, a daughter, Emil Braun, a son on the homestead farm in the town of Kossuth, three sisters, Mrs. Frank Felzer Sr., Mrs. Frank Neuser, and Miss Helen Braun, all of the town of Kossuth, and seven grandchildren. ANNA BRAUNREITER From Der Nord Westen, 10 Dec. 1908: Consumption took the life Saturday, after many months of illness, of 29-year old Mrs. Frank Braunreiter, a resident of North 22nd Street. Especially grievous is the fact that 2 of the deceased’s children were suffering from smallpox at the same time. It is of the mildest strain but there is concern when it is overlaid with sadness over their mother’s death. Because they were under quarantine, only a closed funeral could be held with just the immediate next of kin permitted to attend. [cause: tuberculosis]

EDWARD BREY (d. 1930) Prominent Grocer Victim of Appendicitis Attack EDW. BREY JR. DIES AT HOME LAST EVENING Was Operated on Two Weeks Ago; In Business With Father; Took Over Store 3 Years Ago Suffering an attack of appendicitis two weeks ago yesterday, and undergoing an operation, Edwin Frederick Brey, aged 44, prominent north side grocer, passed away last evening at the family home, 810 North Eighth street. His death was a shock to his family and friends, many of the latter not even knowing that he was in a serious condition. Mr. Brey, who, with his father, had been engaged in the retail grocery and fruit business on the north side here for 25 years, had enjoyed the best of health up to the day he was stricken ill. He was a great sport devotee, and despite his weight, was able to play diamond ball in the same class with players many years his junior. Only two days before he was taken ill he played a game of diamond ball on the Lincoln park grounds as a member of the Herald-News team. Burial on Saturday After his operation Mr. Brey showed signs of improvement and for days strong hopes were held out for his recovery. But Wednesday his condition took a turn for the worse and he passed away at 7:30 last evening. Funeral services will be held on Saturday afternoon at 1:30 from the home on North Eighth street and at two o'clock from the Emanuel Lutheran church on the north side, with Rev. Uetzman officiating. The deceased was born in this city, February 23, 1886 and has always made his home here. He obtained his education in the local schools and early in life entered the employ of his father, Edward Brey Sr. in the conduct of the grocery and fruit store on North Eighth street, located on the present site of the Dick Bros. store. He was later taken into the business and the firm became known as Edward Brey and Sons. In the year 1914 a new brick store and warehouse was erected by the firm at the southwest corner of North Eight and Chicago streets. Takes Over Business Two and a half years ago Edward Brey Sr. retired from active business and the son then took charge of the business, which he conducted up to the time of his death. He was married September 8, 1910 to Miss Mary Albrecht of Two Rivers, who survives him with two sons, Edwin and Kenneth, his father, Edward Brey Sr., one brother, Walter Brey of Chicago and two sisters, Mrs. Norman Markle of Rochester, Minn., and Mrs. Fred Levenhagen of this city. Was Ardent Fan The death of Mr. Brey removes from the community an ardent sport fan particularly of high school athletics. Both of Mr. Brey's sons, Kenneth, who graduated this last June, and Edwin, who finished two years ago, were prominent in basketball, football and track at Lincoln high school and Mr. Brey was a close follower of the teams on which his sons were members, follwing them to neighboring cities for their contests. Mr. Brey was a devout member of the Lutheran church here. Always of a jovial and happy disposition he counted his friends by the hundreds who will deeply regret the passing of a most promising and progressive young business man.
