DR. H.S. BALCOM Manitowoc Tribune Vol. 18 No. 52, Thursday, April 11, 1872, Page 4 Column 2 Sorrowful News -- It will be three weeks to-morrow, when our community was startled by the report that Dr. Balcom, who had lain sick for some time at the residence of Mr. J.E. Platt, had mysteriously disappeared from his bed room during one of his delirious attacks and was nowhere to be found. The report proved true, all the efforts of his many friends to find him, or at the least some traces of him were unavailing until by mere accident, last Monday afternoon, a son of Mr. Avey Smith, being out hunting pigeons on his father's farm, came upon the lifeless remains of the lost man, lying beside a fallen tree. The friends of the deceased were immediately informed and the body was brought to town, where upon inquest before Don A. Shove, Police Justice, the verdict was rendered that the deceased came to his death by exposure. Dr. Balcom was one of the best educated and most successful physicians of our City, his loss is severely felt and will be long remembered by those whom he has benefited professionally, but especially by his personal friends who had the best opportunity to appreciate his character. May Peace which he could not find here, be with him now and forever. The funeral services were held at the residence of the Doctor's most faithful friends Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Platt, and were most solemn and interesting. Rev Mr. Haff reading the service and Rev. Mr. Stevens giving a short but very interesting sermon. The large rooms were crowded with former patients and mourning friends of the deceased, showing fully how high he was respected. ********* Manitowoc County Civil War Roundtable: Hermogene S Balcom 31st WI Infantry, Field & Staff Born: ca 1820 Enlisted: July 14, 1864 as an Assistant Surgeon, from Manitowoc, WI. ROBERT H. BEAN "BOBBY" BEAN'S LONG FIGHT IS ENDED BY DEATH Bed Ridden For Seven Years, Cheerful Sufferer Released Saturday Death, which came to him late Saturday afternoon, ended the long vigil of "Bobby" Bean who for seven years, a hopeless invalid, had cheerfully faced the inevitable with calm resignation and a spirit of indomnitable courage that won admiration. The end came at the home of his parents Mr. and Mrs. George Bean, Fourteenth street and was sudden, although it was realized that life might pass at any time. At the request of Mr. Bean, expressed often, the body was taken to the Wattawa chapel from where funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon, the Rev. Schreiber officiating. The chapel will be open this evening from 7 to 9 for convenience of friends who may wish to see the body. Tragedy Engulfs Him Tragedy, terrible and dark, engulfed the life of "Bobby" Bean, as he was familiarly known to Manitowoc in boy and youth. It shadowed him even before the terrible accident which seven years ago left him a helpless cripple and invalid, but through it all he manifested a most remarkable courage and fortitude and accepted his fate with a cheerfulness that astonished even those who knew him best. There was never a time when "Bob" Bean whimpered or bemoaned fate; at all times his friends found him waiting them with a cheerful word and a smile. Mr. Bean suffered the fatal injuries which caused his death seven years ago while chief engineer on an ocean liner en route from New York to Honduras. Some defect in the engine necessitated repairs and a large steel hoist was used in the work. Bean was operating the hoist when there was a break in the machinery and the big weight fell, burying the engineer under tons of steel and iron. When Bean was taken from beneath the debris of the wrecked hoist, he was thought dead but the steamer was turned from her course and speeded to Charleston, S.C., where Mr. Bean was rushed to the hospital and after X-ray examination, operated upon. It was found that he had suffered a fracture of the skull, a broken back, lacerated spine, crushed ribs and was paralyzed from the hips down. No hope was entertained that he could live but from day to day he improved and was finally able to be brought here, although helpless. He spent months in the hospitals before returning here. Becomes Ad Writer Although paralyzed from the hips down, Mr. Bean regained his mental faculties completely and developed unknown talent and engaged in business as an advertising writer which he followed for a long time. Later he removed to New Orleans where he established a boarding house and directed its management with success, through this means providing for himself and family. He returned here some time ago and had been with his parents to the end. Born in This City Mr. Bean was born in this city on March 10, 1892, being 36 years of age at his death. He attended the local schools and previous to going east to follow the ocean, had conducted the former Staudt hotel for some time. Besides his parents Mr. and Mrs. George Bean he is survived by two children, Louise and James. Although Mr. Bean had suffered but little after leaving the hospital and had received every care, the death comes as a relief to end the long waiting for the inevitable. ERMA BENTLA/BENTLEY From Der Nord Westen, 16 Jan. 1902: Death Mon. of a 9-mo. old daughter of Mr. Gebhard Bentley here of pneumonia. The funeral will be held today. (From cem. office: Based on the age, sex, cause of death, and relative similarity of the last name, I would say it's a match. The burial register has Erma Bentla, female, age 9 mo, born in Manitowoc, cause of death: pneumonia Perhaps Gebhardt Bentli [SR] was her grandfather. Maybe Gebhardt [JR] & Emma Bently were her parents. The lot that Gebhardt [JR] & Emma are buried on wasn't paid for until 1909, so it would make sense that if they had a child die in 1902, they might bury it on the grandparent's lot which was already paid for.)
