JOHN GUYLES BACON John Bacon, a person well known in Manitowoc and this city, died last night from the effects of blood poisoning that resulted from an injury to one of his knees which he received several days ago. LYDIA BACON In Manitowoc, on the 15th July, 1867, at the residence of her son, Mr. O. R. Bacon, Mrs. Lydia Bacon, aged 71 years and 9 months. Mrs. Bacon was a native of Washington County, N.Y., and the widow of Samuel Bacon, formerly of Otsego county, N.Y. After his decease, she continued to occupy the homestead until about three years ago, when she determined to dispose of her property in New York and make her home with her children, most of whom had moved to Wisconsin. Her health had been feeble for several years, and death did not surprise her. She united with the Presbyterian Church in Stillwater, N.Y, at the age of 21 years, and had been for twenty years a consistent member of the household of faith. Possessed of a temper remarkable for meekness and quietness, and gentle and retiring in her disposition, her worth was appreciated only by those intimately acquainted. Patient to the last, unmurmuring and submissive, anxious lest her sickness might be wearisome to others, she bore her suffering with Christian resignation. Trusting the Savior, and hoping for the resurrection of the just, Death seemed bereft of his sting, and the grave to claim no victory. She was no stranger to affliction, having mourned the death of a husband and four children. Four still survive to mourn the loss of an affectionate and devoted mother. Till now the family was equally divided, a father and four children waiting on one side, and four with the mother on the other. We humbly trust she has been called to go up higher. May death have no other office than to wean from earth and wed to heaven. May he never deplete the circle of survivors on earth, but to enlarge the circle of the saved in heaven. OWEN BACON (d. 1882) Gone to Rest. DIED, on Sunday, June 18, 1882, at ten o'clock in the evening, O.R. Bacon, aged 61 years and 10 months. Mr. O.R. Bacon was born at Stillwater, Saratogo Co., N.Y., on August 27, 1821. He studied medicine with Dr. S.A. Cook at Roy, N.Y., and afterwards at the Medical College of Castleton, Vermont. From this institution he graduated November 22, 1848. After graduation he practiced medicine for some time at Buskirk Bridge, N.Y. On March 12, 1850, he was married to Miss Elizabeth Smith. In 1854 he removed to Waukesha, and two years later to Manitowoc. He was employed as principal of the public schools for six years. In 1861, at the breaking out of the war, he was assigned to duty as clerk in the paymaster's office at St. Louis. Returning to Manitowoc, after being engaged in the flour and feed business for a short time, he entered the drug business as a member of the firm of Bacon, Toombs & Co. Gradually his partners entered upon other pursuits, and he became sole proprietor. Since that time he was actively engaged in the business until within a month ago, when illness compelled him to desist from labor. Such are the facts, briefly stated, that make up the career of him, whose body has to-day (sic) been consigned to the earth. It has been an honorable career of usefulness. As a business man Mr. Bacon was scrupulously honest and straight forward, always ready to support any enterprise. As a citizen, he was law-abiding and conservative, yet ever aiming to build up the various interests of the city. As a man, he lived a life that may well be placed before young men, as a splendid example to follow. He was buried by the Masons, in accordance with his expressed wishes. He lived as a just and upright Mason and his life regulated by morality, faith and justice will be rewarded by eternal bliss. Manitowoc Lake Shore Times, Tuesday, June 20, 1882 P. 1 ******** One of the characteristic of the late O.R. Bacon was his aptitude for teaching singing. It was this that was the real cause of his removing to Manitowoc. He had acquired quite a reputation as a teacher of music in Waukesha and was invited to Manitowoc to teach a small class. He gave so much satisfaction and won so many friends, that, in order to induce him to remain the citizens offered him the principalship of their public school. He accepted and filled the position during six years to the entire satisfaction of all. During the time of the rebellion he raised a singing class that gave many public concerts. All these he managed so successfully, that quite a sum of money was netted, all of which he turned over to the soldiers' fund. This talent for teaching was also used by him in building up the Presbyterian Church. He was a firm and faithful follower in the Presbyterian Church and to his earnest efforts is due in a great degree the unprecedanted growth and success of the Sunday School of that church. Manitowoc Lake Shore Times, Tuesday, June 20, 1882 P. 1 ******** The memorial services in memory of O.R. Bacon, deceased, will take place at the Presbyterian church next Sunday morning. Manitowoc Lake Shore Times, Tuesday, June 20, 1882 P. 1 ******** Mr. W.D. Bacon, of Waukesha, arrived last evening, to attend the funeral of his brother this morning. Manitowoc Lake Shore Times, Tuesday, June 20, 1882 P. 1 ********* O.R. Bacon died on Monday morning after a painful illness of some months. Early in the spring his health began to fail, and though nothing of a fatal character was anticipated, he kept growing weaker until he was unable to quit his bed. His disease made rapid progress from this time and quickly destroyed hope. Mr. Bacon, was born in Stillwater, Barstoga county N.Y., August 27, 1821. He studied medicine with Dr. S.A. Cook, of Troy, N.Y., and graduated in the medical college of Casselton, Vermont, after which he practiced medicine at Buskirk Bridge, N.Y. While there he married Miss Eliza Smith, March 12, 1850. In 1854 he moved west and settled at Waukesha. He came to Manitowoc to give lessons in music, intending to maintain his residence at Waukesha. But his success as a teacher of music induced the school board to offer him the principalship of the north side school, which he accepted in 1855 and took up his residence in the city. He continued principal for the period of six years. He then became paymaster's clerk and was stationed for sometime at St. Louis. At the close of the year he engaged in the four and feed business, but soon after quit that and started a drug store, in which business he continued until his death. He was a man of deep religious convictions, rather retiring habits and strict integrity. He enjoyed the respect of all who knew him and lived without making enemies. His funeral took place on Tuesday, appropriate services being held at the Presbyterian church. On account of sickness in the family the services in the church were brief; but memorial services will be held on Sunday morning and the sermon preached by Rev. Mr. Craig. AUGUST F. BAENSCH (d. 1863) DEATH OF AUGUST BAENSCH, ESQ. - With deep regret we announce the death of August Baensch, Esq., which took place in this village on the 16th inst. Mr. Baensch was an old and respected resident of the town, and one of the most public spirited and enterprising citizens; he was a native of Germany, and aged about 36 years. His funeral was a large one - the "Sons of Herman" and the Fire Department joining in the procession. Manitowoc Pilot Thursday, March 27, 1863 pg. 2

EMIL BAENSCH Baensch Rites to be Conducted Saturday Funeral services for Judge Emil Baensch, 82, lawyer, banker, soldier, journalist and twice lieutenant governor of Wisconsin, who died at his home, 610 North Seventh street, late Thursday afternoon, will be held Saturday at 2 p.m. from the Masonic Temple. There will be Masonic rites at the temple and the grave. Representatives of groups with which he was affiliated during his lifetime, including the Rotary club, Odd Fellows lodge, County Bar association and the National Guard will act as honorary pallbearers. Interment will be in Evergreen cemetery. Long and Active Career Death of Judge Baensch ends an active career which began when he left school to take a job as a grocery clerk at the age of 15. Head of the East Wisconsin Trustee company which he founded 31 years go, Judge Baensch, despite his more than four score years was at his desk daily until June 21 last. Illness forced him to remain at home since. He had been confined to his bed since late in July. Aligned with the Republican party in county, state and nation, Judge Baensch took an active part in politics in the years just before and following the turn of the century. His chief hobby in later years was historical research, particularly of the German element in the United States. He held many offices of trust in national and state historical groups. He did not allow advancing years to interfere with his zeal in serving in numerous societies and groups, local, state and national. Born Here in 1857 Judge Baensch was born in this city on June 12, 1857, the son of August and Gesine Baensch. His father came here from Germany in 1848, and was one of the early day _____ of the city. When the judge was only five years old his father died. He continued in school until reaching the age of 15 when he took a job as a grocery clerk in the Schuette store, intending to work until he earned enough to continue his education. After five years he enrolled at the University (Continued on Page 2, Col. 4)…BANESCH RITES TO BE SATURDAY (Continued from Page 1) …of Wisconsin, completing his studies with the class of 1881. He continued the law course there and in 1882 was admitted to the bar. Upon his return to Manitowoc he entered the office of Estabrook and Walker where he began to read law. A short time later he was named a justice of the peace. Those were the days before the creation of the municipal court. He founded the Lake Shore Times, a weekly newspaper, which he continued to publish for three years. From 1885 to 1888 he served as city clerk, and in 1888 was appointed county judge by Governor Rusk. The following year he was elected to the regular term, although a Republican in a strong Democratic county. During his incumbency only one appeal was taken from his decisions, and that was affirmed by a higher court. Helped Found Company H When a young man Judge Baensch took an active interest in military affairs. He was one of the founders of old Company H of the Wisconsin National Guard. In the early eighties, when the guard unit was founded, it was known as the Rankin Guard. He was elected first lieutenant of the company, and in 1883 was elected captain, which commission he held for five years. A sword, presented to him by the company on his wedding night, still hangs in his library. So interested was the judge in the future of the state guard that until four years ago he continued to make yearly pilgrimages with Manitowoc friends to the annual encampment of the Wisconsin National Guard to Camp Douglas. From the time Judge Baensch retired from the county court bench until he organized the East Wisconsin Trustee company in 1908, he enjoyed a large county court practice. He was always busy probating and administering estates. He did not appear to encourage litigious practice, and did not often appear in circuit court trials. When he did he evinced powers that would have put him in the front rank of advocates. Helped Early Industry His name is first on the formal roll of attorneys in the office of the circuit court clerk, the time of admission being the June term, 1881. Prior to that there was no formal roll and admission to the bar appeared in the judge’s minute book. While serving as county judge, which office he held until 1892, he acted as secretary of the old Manitowoc Advancement Association, and helped with the organization of some of the city’s early industries, including the American Seating company. When plans were proposed early in 1890 for organization of the Manitowoc Building & Loan Association Judge Baensch was one of the leaders, penning the postcard notices sent out for the initial meeting. He was named to the first Board of Directors and was the first president of the association. He guided the association through the early years of its existence and continued to head it for over 30 years. Held State Office In 1894 the Republicans of the state brought out Judge Baensch as a candidate for lieutenant governor. Opposing him on the Democratic ticket was Attorney A. J. Schmitz, a fellow townsman. The Republican ticket was successful and the judge was elected. Two years later he was re-elected to another two-year term. During that time he was instrumental in having the law read into the statutes which established the present statewide system of municipal courts. Governor Scofield appointed him commissioner to draft the law under which Building & Loan associations operate in the state. He served at times as acting governor of the state while lieutenant governor, and as such dedicated the state monument at Orchard Knob in Chickamanga and also represented the state at the launching of the battleship Wisconsin in San Francisco. In 1897 and again in 1907 he received a large number of votes for United States senator, although not a candidate for the office. In 1896, he proposed presidential primaries and on many questions of importance took an advanced stand. Sought Governorship Judge Baensch was twice a candidate for governor. While lieutenant governor he was brought out as a candidate for governor against Robert La Follette, Sr., and Edward Scofield. The latter was nominated and elected. In 1904 the gubernatorial fight waged hot for the Republican nomination, with Governor Robert La Follette, Judge Baensch and S. A. Cook in the field. At that time, the delegates were elected at county caucuses to a state convention. The Manitowoc man’s fight for the nomination was in full swing until a “split” developed in the party. That was the year of the famous “Gymnasium” convention in Madison at which the Baensch delegates withdrew after many of the delegates, supposedly favorable to the Manitowoc man were “counted out” by the Credential committee. Mr. LaFollette was nominated by the convention and elected. Convention Delegate Later that year the judge was made a delegate to the Republican national Convention at which Theodore Roosevelt was nominated for president. Judge Baensch always tried to avoid strife and always appealed for conciliation. Although affiliated with the conservative wing of his party, when there were factions he was never bitter about it and several times made public proposals for meeting the opposition half way and putting up a united front. He became an authority on Wisconsin county court practice and the laws on inheritance and descent. His long and extensive practice in this field made him sensible to the ancient and outmoded character of some of the Wisconsin statues in this branch of the law. He often said that the state which boasted of its progress in other lines lagged behind in this. Published German Paper He drafted bills changing the statues in important particulars, including the property rights of widows. He agitated for these changes and effected some of the more important amendments, which but for his initiative and intelligent advocacy would have waited perhaps many years for adoption. Judge Baensch purchased the Manitowoc Post, a German language weekly in 1894, changed its policy and became an active member of the Wisconsin Press association, of which he was three time elected president. For five years he served a chairman of the Wisconsin Library commission and for more than 15 years was president of the Manitowoc library board. One of the leading figures in a patriotic celebration in Manitowoc in 1891 was Judge Baensch. There was a big parade and a program in Washington park, at which he delivered the oration. Historical Authority For years he was on the Executive Committee of the National Press Association and in 1891 was made an honorary member of the Wisconsin German Press Association and the National German Press Club. It was in 1908 that he founded the East Wisconsin Trustee Company which he continued to head until his death. He gave up his law practice to devote all his time to this company. He was a member of the Trust division of the American Bankers’ Association, and attended many of the national conventions of this group of bankers. He was a member of the Board of Curators of the Wisconsin State Historical Society at the time of his death, and was one of the founders of the Manitowoc County Historical Society. He was one of the leading authorities in the United States on the history of the German people in the United States. He assiduously sought data on the subject, attended state and national meetings and never ceased studying, collecting and writing on the subject. He was a member of the Concord and Steuben Societies and for years was active in the campaign to raise money for the Carl Schurz Memorial Fund. Other Affiliations His other affiliations included membership in the American Historical Association and the Mississippi Valley Historical Society. In his study of history he specialized in the records of the German people in America during the Colonial and Revolutionary times and had a large collection of books and pamphlets on the subject. He was often sought as a speaker on German day celebrations throughout the United States. Many an interesting bit of early Colonial history in which German emigrants figured would have been lost but for the delving of the judge, who brought to light these cross sections of their activities. His contributions on these subjects became national in scope and his writing appeared in many magazines of national circulation. State history was also a segment of this hobby. A great friend of Reuben Thwaites, the two wrote and contributed much to the State Historical society. Active with Turners Judge Baensch was an active member of the Turner Society, which controlled the old Turner hall, now razed. At this hall many of the early day German activities of the community took place. He was also a member of the Freier Saengerbund. The judge served as a member of a board of editors of several histories, one of Manitowoc county, one of the German element in Wisconsin and two of Wisconsin. Since attaining his majority Mr. Baensch was a Mason, and passed through all the chairs of the Blue lodge and was a member of the Chapter and Council. He also was a member of the Odd Fellows, the Royal League, the Manitowoc Lodge of Elks and the Rotary club. He was a past president of the latter organization. When the Chamber of Commerce was organized here he served as a member of the Legislative Committee of that organization. He served several terms as president of the Manitowoc County Bar Association. He was a member of the University of Wisconsin Alumni Association and each five years participated in the reunion of the Class of 1881, of which he was a member. Married in 1882. On November 13, 1882, Mr. Baensch married Miss Ida Koehler, on the silver wedding anniversary of her parents, Captain and Mrs. J. A. Koehler. In 1932 Mr. and Mrs. Baensch observed their golden wedding by retracing their honeymoon of 50 years ago. Surviving are the widow; a daughter, Mr. Walter Pitz of Detroit, Mich., and three grand- children, Donald Frank Pitz of Detroit, Edward Brown of Chicago and Robert Brown of this city. Manitowoc Herald Times, Thursday, September 28, 1933 P.1 ******** [bur. 09-30-1933/age 68 yrs/cause: carcinoma] ******** Editorial Comment: Henry Baethke(sic), prominent Manitowoc meat market operator, was a part of South Tenth Street for more than 42 years. During all of those years he operated a meat market in the same block on the same street, a record that can be boasted by few persons. Mr. Baethke operated his market in a way that did not always fit in with the methods too often used during the later years of his life by fly-by-night businessmen. His customers came back to him and when they did he was there to serve them. Any comment of his success as a citizen and businessman is superficial. When a man can thrive in one business at one spot for 42 years through panics and out of them, he has made a record that speaks for itself. Mr. Baethke died this week in his 68th year. There are hundreds of friends and neighbors who will miss him and who will join with his family in mourning his death. Manitowoc Herald Times, Sat., Sept. 30, 1933

Manitowoc Daily Tribune, January 3, 1910 P. 2 ******* Henry Baetz, former State Treasurer of Wisconsin, and for many years a resident of this county, died at his home in Milwaukee Sunday morning at the age of seventy-nine. Mr. Baetz was born in 1830 in Stockhausen, Germany, and came to America in 1835 settling at Two Rivers. In 1855 he moved to Kewaunee but returned to this city in January 1856 and retained his residence here for a number of years. When the civil war began he entered the service and was promoted to the rank of major before the war closed. He was wounded at the battle of Gettysburg in 1863 and was unable to perform further active service in the army but returned here and was elected to the office of county treasurer in 1866 and gain in 1868. In 1870 he was elected State Treasurer and was re-elected two years later. At the conclusion of his time as state treasurer he removed to Milwaukee and has maintained his residence there since. He served in the capacity of city librarian for the city of Milwaukee from 1868 to 1880 and resigned this office to become secretary of the Board of Immigration which position he held until 1883 when he became chief correspondent of the Pabst Brewing Company. He was later connected with Mining interests in Ironwood up to a few years ago when he retired from active business. Major Baetz is survived by a widow, two brothers, Andrew of Two Rivers, and Conrad of Liberty, Mo., and two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Spahn of Two Rivers, and Mrs. Margareth Karnofsky of this city. The funeral was held Wednesday afternoon at two o’clock from the residence on Milwaukee. In accordance with Major Baetz’s request his body will be cremated in Forest Home cemetery and his ashes will be taken to Manitowoc. Manitowoc Pilot, January 6, 1910 ******* "Henry A. Baets, for four years state treasurer, and for years prominent in politics, died yesterday at his home in Milwaukee aged 79 years." The above is the way the socialist sheet handled the best news item of the day yesterday, the death of Maj. Henry Baetz, a former Manitowoc resident, who perhaps was as prominent a factor in the early day settlement of Manitowoc as any one man. His was the story of pioneer days, yet the socialist daily did not even care enough about the item to spell the name of the deceased correctly." —Daily News And we still insist that we gave the above death every atom of space it was worth. The suggestion, or claim, made in the above that it was the “best” news item of the day, might have been true had the gentleman referred to been the only living Republican politician at the time of his death. He was a fair example of his class, as the following will show: The salary of his office as state treasurer being insufficient, he loaned out a ____ of state funds and appropriated the interest accrueing thereon. Being unable to return the money later on, his bondsmen were compelled to do so. So completely was he forgotten in Manitowoc that nothing was ever done by his Republican friends here to render him some assistance in his old age, so that he was forced to depend on the charity of a Milwaukee brewer for his livelihood. We didn’t like to bring out these facts at the time and do so now only because we are practically forced to do so in self defense. And we still insist that we gave all that could be truthfully said in regard to the death referred to and that we couldn’t have said more without either lying or printing disagreeable truths. We like to say all the good we can, even about living Republican and Democratic politicians, and the only reason we say so little good about them is because the material is very scarce. Baird, 20, (photo) son of Mr. and Mrs. Laban Baird, 1020 Buffalo street, was killed in an airplane accident near Santa Ana, California Thursday, according to word received by his parents Thursday evening. DR. H.S. BALCOM From the Files of the Pilot - Forty-Four Years ago (1872) DISCOVERY OF THE BODY OF DR. H.S. BALCOM The dead body of Dr. H. Balcom, of this city, was found on Monday afternoon at 6 o'clock in an out of the way place, about half a mile back in the woods, near Ava Smith's farm, about two miles from the city. The remains were brought to the city and an inquest held, the jury returning a verdict of death from exposure. The facts elicited at the inquest are as follows: After a hearty supper, Dr. Balcom retired to bed and probably in a fit of mental derangement, got up, carefully dressed himself, as the night was very cold and was seen on Saturday morning at 2 o'clock by night watchman Dooling. Since that time until the discovery of his body, as above stated, he had not been seen or heard of. Dr. Balcom was subject to temporary fits of insanity and it is supposed that while under the influence of one of these spells he wandered off in the direction of Ava Smith's place from whence he was frightened off by some dogs, of whom he had a morbid terror and overcome by the cold, died as above stated. Every effort was made by Mr. Platt and others to discover his whereabouts both by offering a reward and personal exertions. Funeral services were held at the residence of Mr. Platt and Dr. Balcom's remains were interred in the cemetery on Tuesday last. The deceased was a native of Boston, Mass., and came here from Chicago in 1863, since which time he had practiced his profession with a success second to none in the State having talents of a very high order and was admitted by brother physicians as one of the most skillful surgeons in the northwest. At the time of his death, Dr. Balcom was in his fortieth year. Manitowoc Pilot, Thursday, Apr. 6, 1916 ******** From the Pilot files, fifty years ago (1872) The dead body of Dr. H.S. Manitowoc Pilot, April 13, 1922 p.1 ******** Sorrowful News -- It will be three weeks to-morrow, when our community was startled by the report that Dr. Balcom, who had lain sick for some time at the residence of Mr. J.E. Platt, had mysteriously disappeared from his bed room during one of his delirious attacks and was nowhere to be found. The report proved true, all the efforts of his many friends to find him, or at the least some traces of him were unavailing until by mere accident, last Monday afternoon, a son of Mr. Avey Smith, being out hunting pigeons on his father's farm, came upon the lifeless remains of the lost man, lying beside a fallen tree. The friends of the deceased were immediately informed and the body was brought to town, where upon inquest before Don A. Shove, Police Justice, the verdict was rendered that the deceased came to his death by exposure. Dr. Balcom was one of the best educated and most successful physicians of our City, his loss is severely felt and will be long remembered by those whom he has benefited professionally, but especially by his personal friends who had the best opportunity to appreciate his character. May Peace which he could not find here, be with him now and forever. The funeral services were held at the residence of the Doctor's most faithful friends Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Platt, and were most solemn and interesting. Rev Mr. Haff reading the service and Rev. Mr. Stevens giving a short but very interesting sermon. The large rooms were crowded with former patients and mourning friends of the deceased, showing fully how high he was respected.
