ROBERT H. BEAN "BOBBY" BEAN'S LONG FIGHT IS ENDED BY DEATH Bed Ridden For Seven Years, Cheerful Sufferer Released Saturday Death, which came to him late Saturday afternoon, ended the long vigil of "Bobby" Bean who for seven years, a hopeless invalid, had cheerfully faced the inevitable with calm resignation and a spirit of indomnitable courage that won admiration. The end came at the home of his parents Mr. and Mrs. George Bean, Fourteenth street and was sudden, although it was realized that life might pass at any time. At the request of Mr. Bean, expressed often, the body was taken to the Wattawa chapel from where funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon, the Rev. Schreiber officiating. The chapel will be open this evening from 7 to 9 for convenience of friends who may wish to see the body. Tragedy Engulfs Him Tragedy, terrible and dark, engulfed the life of "Bobby" Bean, as he was familiarly known to Manitowoc in boy and youth. It shadowed him even before the terrible accident which seven years ago left him a helpless cripple and invalid, but through it all he manifested a most remarkable courage and fortitude and accepted his fate with a cheerfulness that astonished even those who knew him best. There was never a time when "Bob" Bean whimpered or bemoaned fate; at all times his friends found him waiting them with a cheerful word and a smile. Mr. Bean suffered the fatal injuries which caused his death seven years ago while chief engineer on an ocean liner en route from New York to Honduras. Some defect in the engine necessitated repairs and a large steel hoist was used in the work. Bean was operating the hoist when there was a break in the machinery and the big weight fell, burying the engineer under tons of steel and iron. When Bean was taken from beneath the debris of the wrecked hoist, he was thought dead but the steamer was turned from her course and speeded to Charleston, S.C., where Mr. Bean was rushed to the hospital and after X-ray examination, operated upon. It was found that he had suffered a fracture of the skull, a broken back, lacerated spine, crushed ribs and was paralyzed from the hips down. No hope was entertained that he could live but from day to day he improved and was finally able to be brought here, although helpless. He spent months in the hospitals before returning here. Becomes Ad Writer Although paralyzed from the hips down, Mr. Bean regained his mental faculties completely and developed unknown talent and engaged in business as an advertising writer which he followed for a long time. Later he removed to New Orleans where he established a boarding house and directed its management with success, through this means providing for himself and family. He returned here some time ago and had been with his parents to the end. Born in This City Mr. Bean was born in this city on March 10, 1892, being 36 years of age at his death. He attended the local schools and previous to going east to follow the ocean, had conducted the former Staudt hotel for some time. Besides his parents Mr. and Mrs. George Bean he is survived by two children, Louise and James. Although Mr. Bean had suffered but little after leaving the hospital and had received every care, the death comes as a relief to end the long waiting for the inevitable. WALTER BEDFORD TWO PETERS BOYS WOUNDED IN FRANCE, BOTH ON ROAD TO RECOVERY, WRITE LETTERS HOME Letters received from Corporal John Peters of Company H. 127th infantry, who left with Company H, indicate that he was wounded in action in France on July 10th and has been in a base hospital ever since. He was shot through the thigh. Charles Peters, his brother, and a private in the same company who also left here with company H was also wounded in the same battle, but his injuries were slight. Both boys in their letters tell of having the Boche on the run one letter saying, “women and kids are their meat and when it comes to a good hard boiled yank they are not in it.” Corporal Peters said one Yank can make three or four Germans hunt their hole. He adds that “we will eat our Christmas dinner on the banks of the Rhine.” Charles Peters in telling of being wounded says he was struck on the shoulder blade by a machine gun and walked three miles to get to the ambulance. He was fighting near Chateau Thierry when wounded. He says the Sammies all imagined that they would be excited when they got into battle, but Peters said he was as steady as when on the rifle range. ALBERT BENISHEK Albert William Benishek, ("Al"), was welcomed into Heaven by our Lord and Savior on Saturday, March 19, 2011. He passed away peace- fully at Heritage Park Nursing Home after years of relaxing at his lakeside home in Bradenton, Fla. Born as the only child to Frank B. and Olga (Kasten) Benishek on Nov. 16, 1923, in Manitowoc, he endured the challenges of the Great Depression. Al, a long time resident of Manitowoc, attended Immanuel Lutheran School and was a graduate of Lincoln High School class of 1941. He furthered his education with a technical diploma in machine tool operation from Manitowoc Vocational & Technical School (now known as Lakeshore Technical College). Prior to military service, he worked at Manitowoc Shipbuilding where he built submarines used in WWII. Al served his country in the U.S. Navy during WWII at Great Lakes Naval Station with a specialization as a dental and X-ray technician. He had the distinction of training some of the first WAVES as dental technicians. Upon honorable discharge from the military in 1945, as a Pharmacist Mate, Al owned and operated Benishek Printing early in his career. He married his lovely wife, Betty Lou Brunner of Chicago, in 1952. Al joined The Manitowoc Company in the industrial crane division where he was a precision machinist for more than 40 years building sophisticated construction cranes for worldwide distribution. He managed the transition from traditional manual drill press operation to the newest of computerized automated drill press (CNC) machines. Because of his superior skills, Al was selected to work on the carrier system for moving the NASA space shuttle to the launch pad. He also trained numerous journeymen apprentices during his career. His work ethic was incredible; Al often worked tirelessly seven-days a week so he could provide a comfortable lifestyle for his family and fund college education for each of his two children. As a caring father, he took time teaching his son about mechanics and woodworking craftsmanship. This training resulted in five years of fun supervising the building of Soap Box Derby race cars and his son winning an ultimate championship! Al enjoyed real estate and residential architecture, commissioning the design and construction of three different homes in Manitowoc. Travel was also fundamental as a means of experiencing the beauty and history of this amazing country; Al was able to travel with his family to almost every state in the USA before he retired in 1986. Upon retirement, Al and his wife, Betty, relocated to Cape Coral, Fla., where they enjoyed poolside entertaining and boating on the saltwater canals. Al continued his service to our Lord at Abiding Love Lutheran Church in various capacities including designing a central computer database of congregation members. Al and Betty were instrumental in establishing a ministry where kids worked with puppets in theatrical performances sharing important messages of Christian values and God's Word. Shortly after the birth of their first grandson in 1995, Al and Betty moved to Bradenton, Fla., where they assisted with childcare and preschool education for both of their grandsons. Despite the fast pace of technology advances, Al continued to enhance his computer skills everyday by reading the Manitowoc newspaper online and staying in touch with relatives, former neighbors, his grade school friends, Navy buddies and fellow machinists from The Manitowoc Company via email. (Survivors omitted for privacy) Funeral services will be held at Hope Lutheran Church at 1 p.m. on Thursday, March 24, 2011, at 4635 26th St., Bradenton, Fla. Visitation at the church will start at noon until time of services. Graveside services with full military honors and burial will take place at Evergreen Cemetery in Manitowoc, Wis., at 1 p.m. on Saturday, March 26, 2011. HAROLD BENSON 8 YEAR OLD BOY PUSHED INTO BONFIRE MAY NOT LIVE Said to have been pushed into the fire by a companion while playing about a bonfire on No. Tenth street last evening, Harold Benson, 8 year old son of Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Benson, was so severely burned that little hope is entertained he can recover, Dr. F.S. Luhman, who is attending the child, reporting his condition to be critical this afternoon. Three boys, the Benson lad the youngest, were playing about the bonfire when it is said one of his companions pushed the younger lad and he fell into the fire. The two other boys ran away and a short time later Simon Sladkey, who conducts a second hand store near the scene heard the cries of the Benson child and went to his assistance. He rolled the lad in sand of the river bank near at hand and then carried him home. Physicians were called and the boy was taken to the hospital. The lad’s back, chest, arms and face are badly burned and he is suffering greatly. His condition is regarded as extremely critical and he may not survive. Whether any action will be taken against the boy said to have been responsible probably depends on the outcome of the Benson lad’s injuries.
