Manitowoc Herald Times, Tuesday, May 4, 1948 p.2 ******* FIRST LETTER IN 5 YEARS TELLS OF DEATH Mrs. Henry Bode Learns Mother Dead in Germany In a letter from a sister living at Nienburg, Hanover, Germany, Mrs. Henry Bode has learned that her mother died June 10, 1917. For five years she has been without communication with members of her family abroad. The letter is crowded with statements written with simple matter of factness that reveal conditions existing in parts of Germany. Last year the husband of the correspondent converted his roller mill to the production of “leaf flour.” Leaves were dried, ground into flour at the mill and shipped in Berlin for human and animal consumption as a substitute for grain flour. The project was subsequently abandoned when it was found that the product contained only slight nourishment for human beings. Little or nothing has been said in magazine and newspaper articles of the “local food bureaus,” organized by conscription and controlling by cards the present stock of potatoes and other food staples. The letter also speaks of the rigid control over the rapidly dwindling supply of shoes. It required six trips to the magistrate in a nearby town and a certificate signed by the superintendent of schools before a pair of shoes could be purchased for a niece of Mrs. Bode about to be confirmed. The price paid was 100 marks, of a normal value of $25. The leather substitute shoes must be sewed up daily to prevent them from falling apart and even then are no protection against rain. The fact is revealed that there were only a few days of vacation this summer to anticipate the loss of time the coming winter when schools will close because there is no coal to heat them. Mrs. Bode’s sister speaks of a daughter going to neighboring farms to gather bark to supplement the small stock of coke at the mill. Few newspaper correspondents that have traveled through Germany have reported the acute shortage of houses in the new republic. The letter refers to the local Bureau of Rents, “Miethsemt,” lings, in this particular case all bedrooms but those required by the family for the fugitives crowding Germany from Alsace-Lorraine, German Bohemia, and even South Africa. Numerous war weddings and the cessation of building operations during the war has aggravated the situation. The war profiteer apparently was as active in former empire as elsewhere. The rich had plenty, but thousands and thousands in the lower and middle class died of feebleness. A malignant type of “hunger-typhus” swept away thousands of lives. Although proprietor of a prosperous business before the war it required all of the husband’s ingenuity and thoughtfulness to keep the family alive. Confirmation is an important event in the younger people’s lives and is celebrated with elaborate feasts. Being unable to secure bread, an old friend in a neighboring town promised to secure several bread ends for the occasion but was unable to make good, the feast finally consisting of skim sour milk soup. Mrs. Bode’s brother-in- law, a large man of powerful build lost 100 pounds during the war. The shortage of clothing is revealed by the glee with the sister describes the discovery of two pieces of velvet, laid away years before, which are now to be dyed and made into gowns for the daughters. There are no concerts and balls in this section of Germany and the writer confides to her sister that the three young nieces whose ages vary from 11 to 16 are living “a sad youth.” As soon as parcel post communication with Germany was restored several months ago, Mr. and Mrs. Bode made several shipments of items for want of which the population was known to be suffering. ELLA BOEHMER Death of Ella Boehmer, 3-1/2 yr. old daughter of Charles Boehmer, on 25 Mar. of a cerebral hemorrhage. Charles is the son of Daniel Boehmer. The child was buried in the City Cemetery on 27 Mar. Der Nord Westen, 28 Mar. 1889

DANIEL BOEHMER We reported last week that Mr. D. Bohmer(sic) has suffered a broken leg while jumping from a scaffolding during the terrible storm that Tuesday. We must now report that the injury he suffered had gotten so much worse that the doctors decided to remove the limb this Tuesday. Dr. Pritchard performed the operation. Der Nord Westen, July 28, 1898 ********* From the Files of the Pilot - Thirty Years Ago - (1898) Daniel Boehmer suffered the amputation of his foot last Tuesday. Both bones of the leg were broken by his fall during the wind storm of last week and they were so badly splintered that it was found impossible to set them. Manitowoc Pilot, Thurs., Aug. 2, 1928 ********* Death of Daniel Bohmer(sic) on Friday afternoon following the amputation of a leg. By his death our city has lost one of its oldest German settlers. The deceased was born 21 October 1827 in Zinsheien in what was then the Kingdom of Nassau and thus was 71 years of age. He came to America in 1850 stopping first in St. Louis but came to Manitowoc shortly thereafter and has lived here ever since. He operated a woodworking shop here and many of our citizens were pleased with the care and skill of his handiwork. Mr. Bohmer leaves his widow, 3 daughters and two sons. The funeral took place Tuesday under the auspices of the local Free Masons Lodge. Der Nord Westen, August 4, 1898 ********* Daniel Boehmer died last Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock. He was seriously injured during the wind storm two weeks ago, his leg having been broken in several places. The bones were splintered and the muscles were torn so badly that mortification set in and the foot was amputated in the hope of saving his life. The poison was not checked, however, and from it and the shock of the operation death resulted in a few days. Mr. Boehmer was born at the village of Zinhain, Marienberg, Hesse- Nassau, in what is now Prussia, nearly seventy-one years ago. He came to America in 1850, and after a short residence in New York went to St. Louis where he remained until 1855. During that year he moved to Manitowoc and has lived here ever since. He has for years been a general contractor and builder, and remained actively in business up to the moment of his injury. Though naturally a quiet man he made a large number of friends during his long residence here and his sudden death has been a shock to all. He is survived by his wife, two sons and three daughters. The funeral was held last Tuesday under the auspices of the Masons. Manitowoc Pilot Thursday, August 4, 1898 pg. 3 ******** [bur. 07-29-1898/cause: accident]

Kaufman's Close Call Edward Boettcher, aged 20, is the season's first victim of the river in the city, Boettcher losing his life while bathing with a party of friends near the Wisconsin Central bridge Saturday afternoon. The body was recovered and the funeral was held at the home of an uncle Edward Boettcher, Twenty-Sixth street this afternoon, Rev. Huppert officiating. Boettcher, a native of Antigo and an orphan, came here last December and was employed at the Dry Dock Co. yards. Saturday the boy, with his sister and a brother, visited at the home of his uncle, Edward Boetcher (sic), 26th street on the occasion of the latter's birthday and during the afternoon, the boys planned to go to the rivers. Boetcher was unable to swim and being unfamiliar with the river, had been in the water but a short time when he encountered a depth that proved fatal. Efforts to reach the boy proved unavailing. The death of Boettcher followed that of Irving Gartzke, a Centerville boy who lost his life in a mill pond at the village Friday night while bathing. The Gartzke boy was 17 and had recently launched the Cleveland Centerville review, to be published month[ly]. The boy was a son of G. Gartzke, proprietor of the Centerville brewery and attended school at Milwaukee. The body was recoverd. Another life was rescued from a fate similar to that of young Boettcher when Leonard Kaufman, a West Side youth was taken from the river at Rapids by Frank Bartels after the boy was thought dead, Kaufman cried for help but companions thought he was fooling and he was permitted to sink for the second time before assistance was given him. The boy was revived after twenty minutes of work over him. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, July 13, 1908 P.1 ****** [cause: drowning]

His own father Albert Boettcher, lives in Brillion, but Paul was adopted by his uncle when only a few months old and has since made his home with him. He was last seen alive about 11 o’clock Saturday night when he left a saloon in the west end and started for home on the railway track. It is not yet known what train hit him but it is believed to have been the southbound passenger at 1:54 as the remains appear to have been dragged toward the south. A man answering Boettcher’s description was found by a resident of Spencer street, sitting in the ditch beside the track, near Spencer street early Sunday morning, but could not be roused. While attempting to rouse him the north-bound 1:04 train passed. A policeman was called, but when he arrived the man had disappeared and could not be found. It is now believed this man was Boettcher and that he proceeded as far toward the brick yard as the point where he was found, and was there overtaken by the 1:54.” An inquest was called, but an adjournment taken until Friday night.
