JAMES ALLEN From the Manitowoc Tribune- we learn that the body of James Allen, who was drown at Manitowoc Rapids on the 4th, was recovered on the 8th. Daily State Journal, Madison, Wisconsin, Thursday, July 14, 1859 Page 1 ********* A Heart Rending Calamity.- We were never called upon to record such a sad and melancholy accident as the death, by drowning, of Mr. James Allen, of Manitowoc Rapids-one of the most estimable and respected citizens of our county. He was in the village on the Fourth, enjoying the society of his friends, and started for home about 5 o'clock, P.M. Not arriving to his family in season, fears were entertained, and search was made next day. His hat was found in the river near the Rapids, which fact confirmed the worst fears of his friends. Search was continued until Thursday morning, when his cold and lifeless body was found beneath the waters. It is supposed that in crossing the bridge, at the Rapids, he missed his footing and fell in the angry waters, never to rise again. He was a very intelligent man, and possessed the confidence and esteem of all his neighbors-being, at the time of his death, Chairman of the Board of Supervisors. A wife and seven children are left to mourn his sudden and unexpected death. May a kind Providence comfort and protect them. The Manitowoc Pilot, Tuesday, June 14, 1859 P.3 ********* Tribute to the Memory of James Allen. EUGENE O.G. ALTER (VON ALTER) From the Lakeshore Times, July 18, 1882: At Rest Died: July 15, 1882, Eugen Alter, aged 50 years, 3 months and six days. Mr. Alter was born in Coblenz, Germany, April 9, 1832. In his veins there flowed the blood of two of Germany's noble families. His father was a scion of the ancient and honorable house of Von Alter, while his mother, nee Von Kutzleben, could trace her lineage back into the misty times of the age of chivalry. Born under such fortuitous circumstances, he enjoyed the best of educational facilities. A few years after the death of his father, which occurred in 1847, he emigrated, with his mother and sister to America, which to him, was the land where the true form of free government was realized. After a few month's stay in Buffalo, he came, together with the aforementioned, to Manitowoc, in May, 1850. Thus it will be seen that he was one of our oldest settlers. With the exception of a few months, spent as a clerk in Milwaukee, he has lived here ever since. He has been engaged in various enterprises and business, and during the past seven or eight years has been in charge of the Clothing Department of J. Schuette and Bros. About four months ago, he was seized with an attack of inflammation of the bowels, and ever since his health has failed. He was subject to numerous spells of sickness during that time, yet from each one he rallied. But the last one was fatal. Exactly four months ago he became seriously sick, and during all those weary weeks, he suffered most excruciating pain. The scientific skill of the physician could give but temporary relief. Gradually the robust form wasted away; the hand of science was not strong enough to keep the dread destroyer distant; the grief of wife and sons was met with no mercy. He died, and perhaps death was merciful in relieving his terrible sufferings, which he bore with manly fortitude, and his unselfish, loving nature was never shown to better advantage than during those dreary days of sickness. No patient ever caused less trouble to those nursing him, than he. It was touching to see how anxious he was that none of his family should suffer inconvenience on account of him. Indeed, it is an inscrutable providence that allows rascality to thrive and enjoy health, while it dooms such a noble nature to weeks and months of suffering, which only ends in death. A wife and three sons, as well as a large number of relatives, mourn this loss. Upon the sanctity of the grief of the family let no one intrude. No one knows better of the terrible sufferings the deceased underwent, than she, who, day and night, sat at his bedside and ministered to his every want with loving hands, and as there was no other cure than death, her boundless love for the deceased will make her resigned to that fate. Let the sons, who are just on the verge of manhood, ever keep sacred the memory and emulate the virtues of him, who has gone before them "to the land of the hereafter." He reared them with a firm and loving hand, they were his pride, his comfort, his everything. ********** The funeral of Mr. Alter occurs this afternoon at three o'clock. He will be buried with Masonic ceremonies, Bro. J.M. Craig delivering the oration. The deceased was an enthusiastic admirer of the craft and his death is a severe loss to the order in this vicinity. ********** From the Lakeshore Times, July 25, 1882: In Memoriam. At a regular communication of Manitowoc Lodge No. 65 F. & A. M., held Wednesday, July 19, 1882, the following resolutions were adopted: Whereas, It has pleased our all-wise Supreme Master to call from labor unto rest, our worth Brother and fellow craftsman, Eugene Alter, and Whereas, We are thus separated in the body, from one whose departure creates a sad vacancy in our councils, and in our ranks, therefore be it Resolved, That this lodge in parting with our worthy brother, feels called upon to express its sentiments of respect due him as a man and a mason; that our heartfelt sympathies go out to his bereaved family, to whom his qualities of heart, and generous affections endcared(sic) him in a love, that is lasting beyond the confines of the grave. Resolved, That these resolutions be spread upon the records of the Lodge and published in the papers of the city. Fred Heineman, E.G. Nash Com. ********** (Death notice in Der Nord Westen, 20 July 1882 Death of Eugen Alter on 15 July. He arrived from Rheinland in 1850 at age 18 with his mother (now deceased)and his sister who is now the wife of Mr. Wm. Bach. Mrs. Underle had not been about during the day and neighbors, fearing that she was ill, visited her rooms and found her dead in bed. Death was due to natural causes and no inquest was held. Mrs. Underle, who is 73, was a pioneer resident of the county. She is survived by two daughters and one son, all residing at Milwaukee. The body was taken to the C & H Frazier undertaking rooms and removed to the vault today. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Tuesday, February 05, 1918, Page 4 ******** CITY ORDERS A PROBE INTO DEAD WOMAN’S AFFAIRS To Ask Administrator in Case of Barbara Underle, Found Dead. Woman Said to Have Had Money To the end that the city may be reimbursed for aid given her and for funeral expenses, if it develops that there is any funds, the council last night directed the poor committee to ask an administrator in the death of Barbara Underle, an aged woman found dead in her room at Seventh and York Streets several weeks ago. The city proposes to have an investigation into the case. Mrs. Underle lived alone in an upstairs room of a house occupied by another aged woman. After her death, a son at Milwaukee who came here for the burial, claimed that his mother has a sum of money, reported to be $1,000 sewed in her petticoat but no trace of the money was found. It was said the house had been ransacked. While city officials accept the story of the dead woman having had money with a grain of salt, they believe that an investigation should be made and to this end Chr. Schenian of the Poor committee advised that an administrator be asked for in an effort to locate money or property of the woman if any existed. It was said the cost would be nominal and the council voted to authorize such action. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Tuesday, March 05, 1918, Page 8

WILLIAM C. ANDERSON RIVER CLAIMS ITS FIRST VICTIM OF YEAR IN PERSON OF 8 YEAR OLD BOY TODAY Willie Anderson, Son of Andrew Anderson, N. Tenth Street, Falls from Yacht and is Drowned Near Riverview Park at Noon. Body is Recovered The river claimed its first victim of the season today, little Willie Anderson, aged 8, losing his life near Riverview park, by drowning when he fell from the Schuette yacht, which was moored in river and which the Anderson lad with others had boarded. The body was recovered after an hour’s search and dragging of the river. The unfortunate boy is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Anderson, residing on North Tenth street. The child had been at the Hansen paint shop on Buffalo street, where his father is employed, fifteen minutes before the fatal accident and had left there to return home. He stopped at the river where a number of boys were playing and joined them. While attempting to walk about the outside railing of the yacht, on a narrow ledge, the Anderson boy lost his balance and was plunged into the river. Frightened by the accident other boys in the party hurried for assistance but when rescuers reached the scene no trace of the missing boy could be found. There is a strong current in the river near where the boy fell in, and it was feared that the body might be carried down river before it could be recovered. Capt. Carle of the police department assisted by Capt. Thomas Olson secured a boat and dragged the river for the body and after nearly an hour of searching, the dead body was found about 70 feet from the spot where playmates of the boy said he had fallen in. When first reports were received it was said that the identity of the boy was not known but later playmates said he was Willie Anderson. The news of the tragedy was a terrible blow to parents of the child and Mrs. Anderson is under care of physicians. The little boy was taken to the undertaking rooms of William Frazier and later will be removed to the stricken home. The accident is the first of the season on the river which annually for several years has claimed one or more lives near where the Anderson boy lost his life. Arndt, who was a sergeant with old Company H when the local command entered the war, won the Criox de Guerre for distinguished service at the battle of Juvigny when he led a command of cannon of 31 milometers to the first line trenches of the enemy and destroyed the nests of the snipers making it possible for the infantry forces to proceed against the enemy with and advance. The battle of Juvigny was not the only one in which Sergt. Arndt led these attacks and on one occasion of his command but three men were left when the work against the snipers was completed and the way cleared for the advance of the allied forces against the front, but at Juvigny the service was recognized in particular. "The official notice of the decoration reads: "Sergt. Richard Arndt for acts of bravery in conducting his cannon of 31 milometers before the first line trenches and succeeding in destroying all the nests of snipers, thus permitting the advance of the infantry. PETAIN" Is Employe of city Capt. Arndt is modest and declines to discuss the decoration or the service for which he was bestowed preferring, he declared to forget the horrors of war and give thought to his work as an employe of the city of Manitowoc and the interest of Company E, the local guard unit, of which he has just been made the head. He confesses that he is pleased to have the decoration and a host of friends are happy with him. For two years Capt. Arndt has been employed in the utility offices at the city hall as assistant to Manager Walter Staeffl?l and his service for the city is of the same high character as that he performed for his county as a soldier, say officials. OLIVER ASLACKSON From Der Nord Westen, 18 Aug. 1904: A terrible accident occurred yesterday afternoon at the intersection of State and 8th Streets. Elderly Oliver Aslakson was crossing the street but because of his age had lost his hearing and so was unable to discern the approaching streetcar. The motorman was unable to see the old man until it was too late because the car was coming around the corner. Therefore, Aslakson was hit head-on by the fast moving streetcar. Naturally the old man was knocked down and dragged some distance before the car could be stopped. It is reported that his chest was crushed, his head badly injured and both legs broken. Death must have occurred in the blink of an eye. A coroner’s inquest will be held today to determine the degree of the motorman’s responsibility. ********* From Der Nord Westen, 25 Aug. 1904: The coroner’s jury, which was considering last week’s accident in which Oliver Aslaksen lost his life, decided that the streetcar company was not responsible; however, the so-called fenders on the streetcar were not aligned as they should have been.
