He then came back to Manitowoc, worked first for the Schreihart Brewing Co., then established a store on the corner of 8th and Washington Streets which he operated until his death. He had been ill for almost two years and was bedridden since last Fall with unbearable pain. If it can ever be said that death was a release, it would apply in this case. JOSEPH C. WILLINGER From Der Nord Westen, 16 Sept. 1909: Monday afternoon, shortly after 1 o’clock, news spread like wildfire through our city that Sheriff Joseph C. Willinger, who had just taken over his office the first Monday in January, had died suddenly. Most people were unaware that he had suffered with rheumatic fever and had been bedridden with heart illness. His associates took care of his work so that he didn’t have to leave his bed. Monday noon about 1 o’clock his wife went into his bedroom to pick up some envelopes ready for posting. She took them to the Sheriff’s Office and returned. When she reentered the bedroom she discovered that her husband had died in the meantime. His death must have occurred so quickly that he was unable to cry out. The doctor who was called could only confirm that life had gone. Joseph C. Willinger was born in Cato 42 years ago and had spent the greater part of his life there. He served here as a constable, justice of the peace, and deputy sheriff, until being elected sheriff of Manitowoc County last fall.
