The traffic fatality brings the county’s 1986 total to nine. Schmidt was pronounced dead at 12:15 p.m. at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay. He was taken to Holy Family Medical Center in Manitowoc after the accident, which occurred at 8:30 a.m., to stabilize his vital signs. Alcohol does not appear to be factor in this case, she added. Schmidt retired from the Manitowoc Police Department about one year ago.
