The traffic fatality brings the county’s 1986 total to nine. Schmidt was pronounced dead at 12:15 p.m. at St. Vincent Hospital in Green Bay. He was born 24 Feb. 1848 in Bohemia, came to America in 1867 and settled in Clarks Mills where he ran a store. After about a year he moved to Newell, Minn. where he stayed for six years. He then came back to Manitowoc, worked first for the Schreihart Brewing Co., then established a store on the corner of 8th and Washington Streets which he operated until his death. He had been ill for almost two years and was bedridden since last Fall with unbearable pain. If it can ever be said that death was a release, it would apply in this case. His widow and 4 children mourn his early death. Burial took place yesterday morning in the Catholic Cemetery with a long cortege of mourners.
JOSEPH C. WILLINGER From Der Nord Westen, 16 Sept. 1909: Monday afternoon, shortly after 1 o’clock, news spread like wildfire through our city that Sheriff Joseph C. Willinger, who had just taken over his office the first Monday in January, had died suddenly. Most people were unaware that he had suffered with rheumatic fever and had been bedridden with heart illness. His associates took care of his work so that he didn’t have to leave his bed. Monday noon about 1 o’clock his wife went into his bedroom to pick up some envelopes ready for posting. She took them to the Sheriff’s Office and returned. When she reentered the bedroom she discovered that her husband had died in the meantime. His death must have occurred so quickly that he was unable to cry out. The doctor who was called could only confirm that life had gone. Joseph C. Willinger was born in Cato 42 years ago and had spent the greater part of his life there. He served here as a constable, justice of the peace, and deputy sheriff, until being elected sheriff of Manitowoc County last fall. He is survived by his widow and 2 children, as well as his sorrowing mother, a brother and 2 sisters. The funeral will be held this morning from St. Boniface Church. The governor will have to appoint someone to fill his unexpired term and in the meantime it will be conducted by Coroner Falge.

ANNIE WUNDERLICH From Der Nord Westen, 29 Apr. 1909: Death Saturday evening from over-exertion at the young age of 30, of Mrs. Charles Wunderlich, wife of the well-known barber on Main Street. After doing her wash Monday Mrs. Wunderlich tried to move the heavy washing machine to one side. By lifting it alone, apparently, she sustained an internal injury. Because she experienced no further pain she said nothing more to her husband after the incident. On Friday her condition worsened. The doctor who was summoned gave the sad news that she was suffering from internal blood poisoning (Blutvergiftung) and there was no hope for recovery. The death is especially sad because she leaves her sorrowing husband with 4 small children without a mother, the oldest of whom is 8 years and the youngest less than a year.
