WILLIAM MCFARLAND LOCAL MAN IS KILLED AT GREEN BAY W. M'FARLAND CRASHES INTO TELEPHONE POLE Goes Off Road on 141 Three Miles This Side of Bay and Fatally Hurt Crashing into a telephone pole after his automobile had left the road three miles south of Green Bay on Highway 141 at 3:30 this morning William McFarland, 46, proprietor of a Four Corners soft drink establishment at the junction of Highways 10-141 was fatally injured and died at St. Vincent's hospital at Green Bay an hour and a half later. McFarland never regained consciousness. Death was due to internal injuries, skull fracture and loss of blood. The body of McFarland was brought here this afternoon and is at the Pfeffer undertaking establishment. Green Bay authorities said no inquest would be held as the death was clearly accidental. Fails to Make Curve McFarland, who was driving a new Nash sedan, licensed in the name of his wife, Mrs. Mary McFarland, was thrown off the road at what is known as Giese's Hill, a few miles south out of Green Bay on a short turn which it is believed the driver failed to negotiate because of the speed at which he was driving or missed by reason of not realizing that he was approaching the curve. Nearby residents who heard the crash of the impact when the McFarland car struck the post, notified the sheriff's office at Green Bay and when the officer reached the scene they found McFarland pinioned in the wreck his head crushed and the man unconcious. The car was badly damaged and from all indications had been going at a high rate of speed when the crash came. The injured man breathed his last at five o'clock at the Green Bay hospital. Wife Files Report A few hours previous to the tragedy Mrs. McFarland had made request of Sheriff Carstens here to locate her husband, who, she said, had taken her automobile and left the place at Four Corners yesterday afternoon. Mrs. McFarland was notified of the tragic death of her husband this morning and immediately left for Green Bay to arrange for bringing the body here. Resident Here for Years McFarland was well knwon in Manitowoc city and county, having been a resident here a number of years and for the past six years he has conducted the place at Four Corners formerly known as the Kellner place and owned by the Bonin interests. HUGH MCGOVERN DROWNED. Hugh McGovern of this city, first mate of the schooner Imperial was drowned on Thursday last near Beaver Island. The schooner had taken on a load of lumber at Black river near the straits. During the storm of Wednesday and Thursday she lay at anchor near Fox Island. After the storm had moderated they proceeded on their way. In hoisting the jib one of the ropes became foul and McGovern went forward to disengage it. While standing on the fore castle deck the schooner lurched and he was thrown overboard falling in front of the vessel. It is believed that he passed under the vessel. He rose behind the vessel nothing but his arms appearing above the surface. The boat at the stern was cut loose but too late to reach him. He was never seen again. He leaves a wife and large family in rather poor circumstances, as they depended solely on him for a living. The hair was washed away from the head. It was at first believed to the body of John Dillon, Cohen of Maple Grove or McGovern lost from the Imperial. But Dillon was not tattooed, Cohen, according to our Franklin correspondent is in Michigan and McGovern was lost on the other shore, besides the latter had marks wanting in the person found. Alzheimer's - The Thief A thief came awhile back and slowly took our Mom away She didn't do it all at once, but by tiny pieces every day At first we hardly noticed and sometimes even smiled. "OH, She's just getting older," we told ourselves, our long suit was denial. The haunted look for what once was - the searching, asking, pacing - the thief had all the cards in hand, with times against Mom racing. Mom tried her best with what she had and Lord knows we did too, but the thief just took control and stole each bit of her we knew But now that hard battle's over, and Mom's resting in her final Home. God made the thief give back to us the Mother we had known. "We Love You and Will Miss You" - Your children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. LAWRENCE MENNE Menne left Manitowoc Sunday morning after attending mass at the St. Boniface church. He had promised a relative in Green Bay, his former home, to drive her to a church observance on Palm Sunday. He was hurrying to keep this appointment when his car met the John Stelmach car. Stelmach, who is a brother of Harry Stelmach, Manitowoc tavern operator, was returning to Denmark, his home, from Green Bay. He was a garage mechanic in the village. The impact was so great that both drivers were pinned behind the wheels of the cars. Both sustained crushed chests. They were dead before they could be removed from the wrecked machines. Eye Witness's Story G.W. Dow, Green Bay, was the only eye-witness to the accident. He was driving south directly behind Stelmach, Dow told Brown county officers when they reached the scene that Stelmach's car swerved over the center line of the highway on the curve and that the driver seemed to lose control momentarily. The scene is a short distance north of the Blue Stone tavern on Highway 141. Dow said the Stelmach car was on the left side of the highway when it met the Menne car. He added that Menne swung his car toward the right in a last minute effort to avoid the collision. Both cars landed in the ditch after the crash. The bodieswere taken from the wrecked machines with difficulty. The Menne body was removed to the Pfeffer funeral home in this city. The body of Mr. Stelmach was taken to a Denmark funeral home. ******** ESCAPED Mrs. Menne and infant son escaped possible death Sunday when she decided at the last minute not to accompany her husband in Green Bay. She said today that until her husband was ready to leave for Green Bay she intended to accompany him and take their son along. Mr. Menne said he planned to be back in Manitowoc soon after dinner. It was then she decided not to make the trip. An hour later her husband was dead. ******** LAWRENCE F. EDWARD MEYER, DR. DR. EDW. MEYER DIES SUDDENLY AT HOSPITAL Fails to Recover From Heart Attack of Five Weeks Ago Dr. Edward Meyer, lifelong resident of this section of the state and for years engaged in practice at Brillion, Reedsville and in this city, died at the Holy Family Hospital at 6:30 last evening, having failed to rally from an attack of heart trouble which he suffered five weeks ago. Dr. Meyer’s death was sudden and unexpected as hopes had been entertained that he would recover. Early last evening he suffered a sinking spell and passed quietly and calmly. The body was removed to the home of his son, Atty. Edward Meyer, Sixteenth and Columbus streets and the funeral will be held from there tomorrow afternoon at 2 o’clock. Stricken Suddenly Dr. Meyer was stricken suddenly five weeks ago while assisting in an operation at the hospital. He was able to complete the operation but as he started to leave the hospital was overcome and was found unconscious and for hours life was despaired of. He was revived, however, and for two weeks, bravely battled for life and was thought to be winning the fight. At his own request, he was removed to his home in the Spoentgen block but when he failed to make the progress hoped for, returned to the hospital last week where his condition, while not serious, had caused apprehension as to the outcome. Only a short time before death claimed him Dr. Meyer had voiced a hope that he would be able to leave the hospital in a few days. Native of County Born at St. Nazianz fifty-eight years ago, Dr. Meyer spent his boyhood there and after completing school, entered Rush Medical College at Chicago, completing the course, and later establishing an office at Brillion where for many years he continued his residence, building up a large practice in Manitowoc and Calumet counties. About two years ago, he decided to remove to this city and opened offices in the Spoentgen block. Dr. Meyer gave special attention to practice in eye, ear, and throat diseases and was recognized as a conscientious and capable physician. News of the death of Dr. Meyer was a great shock to the community in which, during his long residence, he had won a large circle of friends, and was widely known. He was a member of the Masonic order, being affiliated at Brillion and was also a member of the Manitowoc Lodge of Elks. Surviving Family Besides his widow, Mrs. Ella Meyer, the surviving family is two sons and one daughter, Dr. K. T. Meyer of Evansville, Ind., Mrs. Rex Capwell of Racine and Atty. Edward Meyer of this city. It is rather a peculiar co-incident that Atty. Edward Meyer, son of Dr. Meyer, should have been at St. Nazianz, the birthplace and long residence of his father, when he was informed of the death. Atty. Meyer had been called to St. Nazianz during the afternoon and was reached there by telephone when the death occurred, the news coming as a complete surprise and great shock. Mr. Meyer immediately hurried to the city to assume charge of arrangements. The funeral of Dr. Meyer will be held under auspices of the Masonic order which will conduct services at the home. Members of the Brillion chapter will be here. Burial will be at Calvary where members of the Meyer family rest. Manitowoc Herald News, Wednesday, August 13, 1924, p. 2
