CARL HEINGARTEN, SR. From Der Nord Westen, 25 Jan. 1906 Death Tuesday evening of 57-year old Carl Heingarten, Sr., of a brain disease in Holy Family Hospital. The deceased was born 19 September 1848 in Baden and as a boy came to America with his parents, arriving in our city where he has lived since 1857. During the Civil War he served as a volunteer with the 39th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment. In 1870 he married Miss Louise Winter, his now sorrowing widow. Also mourning his passing are 4 children – Carl Heingarten, Jr., of Chicago, Mrs. W. Willinger and Miss Rose and Walter Heingarten here, as well as a brother living in New Orleans, Louisiana, and 2 sisters. The deceased was a shoemaker by trade and for many years operated a shoe store on South Main Street. He was a member of the G.A.R. and of the singing club “Concordia”. In his passing the city has lost a respected and beloved citizen and the family has lost a loving husband and father. He was often elected by his fellow citizens to positions of trust and he filled those posts honorably. The funeral will be held Saturday morning from St. Boniface Church. NOTE: I believe this is where this obit goes, the year of death matches, the Civil War regiment matches and there are no other Carl Heingartens in and other cemeteries, although the year of birth differs.
MAMIE HEINRICHS From Der Nord Westen, 11 Nov. 1909: Consumption took the life Tuesday of Mamie Henrichs at age 18. Plans had been made recently to take her to the state T.B. sanitarium, but death intervened. The deceased, an orphan, had been living with the family of Joseph Schliessleder and more recently with Mrs. Van Zon. The funeral will be held today.
MARGARET HELD Margaret J. Held, age 83, of 1405 S. 21st St., Manitowoc, died on Friday evening, Dec. 19, 2008, at St. Mary's Home, Manitowoc. She was born on March 5, 1925, in Manitowoc, daughter of the late George J. and Louise (Vandeveld) Walls. Margaret graduated from East High School, Green Bay. She then received an associate degree from Edgewood College, Madison, and also attended Lakeshore Technical College, Cleveland, in the nurses aide program. On October 30, 1945, she married Lawrence F. Held at St. John Catholic Church, Green Bay. He preceded her in death Nov. 5, 1976. Margaret was employed as a nurse's aide from 1975 to 1981. She was a member of the Rosary & Altar Society as their secretary from 1996-1997 and also volunteered at St. Mary's Home. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) She was also preceded in death by a son: Mark; two grandsons: Donald Dill and Jacob Lenz; two sisters: Agnes Conroy and Marion Sandoval; and a brother: George Walls. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 27, 2008, at St. Francis of Assisi on Marshall. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. EDWARD HERMAN 2-DAY ILLNESS PROVES FATAL TO ED. HERMAN Tenth Street Tavern Proprietor Dies Thursday Night; Member of Marine Band A two-day illness of pneumonia caused the death at 11:50 p.m. Thursday at Holy Family hospital of Edward Herman, 57, well known tavern proprietor and for many years a member of the Marine band. Mr. Herman operated a tavern at Tenth and Madison streets for many years. At one time he was a teaming contractor doing business with in the city. Mr. Herman left the tavern business for a time during prohibition but reentered the business two years ago. Mr. Herman was one of the original members of the Marine band. He played the French horn. Although retiring from active duty with the band several years ago because of ill health, Mr. Herman retained honorary membership and took part in the various social gatherings of the organization. He was a member of the band for 30 years. He was born in this city May 14, 1878 and lived here all his life. He married Miss Anna Handl June 14, 1923. The widow, one daughter, Elaine, at home, one brother, George E., and four sisters, Mrs. Joseph Pfeffer Sr., Mrs. Ida Barkham, Mrs. Anton Fischer and Mrs. George Allen, all of this city, survive. Mr. Herman was a member of the Eagles. The funeral will be held Monday at 8:30 a.m. at the Pfeffer Funeral Home and at 9 o'clock at St. Boniface church. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery. FERDINAND HERMANN From Der Nord Westen, 01 Sep. 1904: As he was leaving work from the factory of the American School Furniture Co. with his fellow workmen on Thurs. evening, Ferdinand Hermann suddenly fell to the ground. His comrades sprang to his help, but there was nothing they could do because a heart attack had claimed Hermann’s life. Ferdinand Hermann was born in Germany in 1833 and came to Manitowoc with his family about 38 yrs. ago, where he has lived ever since. He was known as an excellent cabinetmaker, was quite healthy despite his age, and his work was always in demand. He had been employed in the above-named factory about a year. A couple of years ago he injured his heart when he fell from a scaffold while at work on some construction in Branch, and it is thought that this may have led to the recent heart attack. He leaves a sorrowing widow and 5 children. The funeral was held Mon. morning from St. Boniface Church with interment in the local Catholic Cemetery.
MARIA HERMANN LONG ILLNESS CLAIMS AGED CITY PIONEER Mrs. Mary Hermann, nee Meyer, aged 67, who for over fity years has made her home in Manitowoc, died early this morning at her home at 1202 South Thirteenth street after a lingering illness. Most of the surviving relatives who were summoned to her bedside yesterday were present when the final call came. Mrs. Herman was born in Hostau, Germany, and came to this country at the age of nine years, coming directly to Manitowoc where she has since made her home at the age of 17 she was wedded to Oswald Hermann and ten children were born to the couple, nine of whom survive to mourn the death of their mother. One son, William, died some years ago as did the father. The children are, Mrs. Anna Cherney of Chicago, Joseph, Ambrose and Mrs. Rose Halverson, all of this city; Adolph of Madison, Mrs. Alma Paul of Chicago, Mrs. Agnes Murphy of Chicago, Mrs. Harriet Degenart of Chicago and John Hermann who made his home with his mother. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 10 a.m. from the St. Boniface Catholic church, the Rev. Fathers Peil, Kersten and Binder officiating, a solemn high mass being read. MARIA HERRMANN Mrs. Mary Hermann(sic), an early settler of Manitowoc died at 11:15 am today following an illness of two years duration. Decedent was born February 6, 1838 at Grossherzog, Baden, Germany. She was married at Manitowoc May 11, 1854 to William Hermann, one of the first street contractors here and who later conducted a saloon for many years at Tenth and Madison Streets. She is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Joseph Pfeger, Mrs. Ida Barkhahu, Mrs. Anton Fischer, Mrs. Mary Dirkman; two sons, George and Edward; one granddaughter, (private); also twenty four grandchildren, fifteen great grandchildren, two sisters, Mrs. M. Juul and Mrs. Kate Kuhnle. She was a member of St. Anne’s society of the St. Boniface church, from where the funeral will be held on Saturday with burial at Calvary. WILHELM HERRMANN From Der Nord Westen, 12 Mar. 1908: Wilhelm Hermann, one of the first contractors of Manitowoc, died yesterday of old age debility. The deceased, who was born 31 May 1830 in Germany, came to Manitowoc in 1851 and has lived here ever since. He built a stretch of the shoreline railroad between Sheboygan and Manitowoc, several adjoining rail strips of this railroad and a large number of the streets of our city and its surroundings. He is survived by his widow, 2 sons and 5 daughters. The funeral will be held Saturday morning from St. Boniface Church.

MARY HERZOG (d. 1911) Failing to rally from an operation which she underwent several days ago Mrs. John Herzog residing south of the city on the Lake Shore road, died at the Holy Family hospital last week. On Friday an operation was performed which failed and gradually she sank into decline and death. Mrs. Herzog was 42 years of age and is survived by her husband and a family of seven children. An aged father four sisters and two brothers also survive to mourn her demise. The funeral will be held from St. Boniface Catholic church to Calvary cemetery Friday morning at 9. ELISABETH HESSEL From Der Nord Westen, 18 Apr. 1907: Death Monday afternoon in Holy Family Hospital of Mrs. Elisabeth Hessel at age 65-yrs. 4 mos. and 14 days. In 1859 she came to Manitowoc with her parents, brothers and sisters from her birth town of Crov, Prussian Rhineland. Following her marriage to Jacob Hessel she lived on a farm in Town Kossuth for a long time, then moved to Manitowoc where she lived the greater part of her life. She is survived by 2 children, a daughter Mrs. Anna Streich and a son Walter Hessel, both local residents. Of her 7 siblings, 2 have preceded her in death – Jacob Roemer here and Joseph in Chicago. The surviving siblings are 2 brothers here and a brother Peter in Quincy, Illinois, as well as 2 sisters, Mrs. Margaret Schultz in Clintonville and Mrs. Katharine Schneider in Kenosha, Wisconsin. The funeral will take place this afternoon from St. Boniface Church to Calvary Cemetery.

From Der Nord Westen, 25 Apr. 1895: Jakob Hessel, whose death was reported in last week's issue, was born 07 Sept. 1817 in Gaualgersheim, bei Bingen, Hess. He came to America early in 1847 and settled in Town Kossuth where he lived until 1889. Following the death of his wife he gave up the farm and moved in with his son-in-law Jakob Roemer of Manitowoc in whose home he died on 18 Apr., following an attack of the grippe. The funeral took place Sat. morning at the Catholic Church attended by a large number of local citizens as well as many former neighbors from Kossuth.
MARY A. HEWITT Funeral services were held this morning at nine o'clock from the Sacred Heart church for Mrs. May Hewitt, 82, (photo), widow of Patrick W. Hewitt, former high school principal here. Mrs. Hewitt died at Watertown on Monday. The Rev. Louis Schorn officiated and cousins of Mrs. Hewitt were pallbearers. Interment was in Calvary cemetery. ROBERT L. HOLMES Monday July 29, 1935 Robert Holmes 5, son of Mr.and Mrs. Wilbur Holmes was killed when run over on Franklin street late Saturday afternoon by a car in Two Rivers. The Holmes accident happened during a light shower Saturday afternoon. The boy was running across Franklin street from the south to the north curb when a car came west on the street. According to Frank Khail proprietor of a battery shop who was an eye witness of the accident, the Holmes boy slipped on the wet pavement as he sought to stop when he saw the oncoming car. His feet came out from under him and the left front wheel of the car ran over his body. The driver stopped his car and carried the injured boy into the Khail and Wilson shop close by. The police ambulance was summoned. The Holmes boy was pronounced dead by a physician when carried into the hospital. Survivors of the five-year-old Holmes boy are his parents, two brothers, and a sister. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 8 a.m. from the Pfeffer funeral home followed by a low mass at St. Boniface church. Interment will be at Calvary cemetery. The body is at the funeral home.

ARNOLD HOLSCHBACH Arnold Holschbach, 73, of 1030 S. 13th St., Manitowoc, died Monday morning at the family residence. He married Barbara Svatek June 23, 1923. She preceded him in death Dec. 16, 1932. He married Marcella Bushman Oct. 25, 1933, at Silver Lake, Manitowoc County. He was a painter by trade, being employed by various firms in the Manitowoc area. He was employed by the City of Manitowoc as a bridge tender for ten years prior to his retirement in 1961. Mrs. Holschbach was born June 23, 1930, at Hayton, daughter of the late Adelbert and Colletta Gebhart Woelfel. She married Eugene E. Holschbach on May 1, 1954, in the Town of Charlestown. DORIS HOLSCHBACH Doris T. Holschbach, age 89, of St. Mary's Home at Felician Village, Manitowoc, formerly of 961 Rosemere Circle, Manitowoc, entered eternal life on Tuesday evening, Oct. 28, 2008, at St. Mary's Home. Doris was born on Sept. 10, 1919, in De Pere. She was the daughter of the late Jacob and Clara (Herrmann) Felten. On Aug. 21, 1945, she married Thomas Holschbach in Manitowoc. ADOLPH HOLSEN (d. 1938) Adolph Holsen, 75, of 836 North 14th street, foreman of crews at Evergreen cemetery, died suddenly of a heart attack this morning as he prepared to supervise the start of the week's work at the cemetery. Mr. Holsen collapsed on a bench as he conversed with members of the crew shortly before seven o'clock. He was pronounced dead by a physician who was called. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m. from the Holy Innocents church. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery. Mr. Holsen was born in Manitowoc Rapids in 1862 and when a young man located in this city. He was engaged in the dock and coal business for a time, having been employed by the Johnson company for 20 years. For the past 20 years he had been a foreman at Evergreen cemetery. He was a member of the Holy Name society. He married Miss Elizabeth Beven in 1892. She died in 1896. He later married Miss Mary Bresnahan. She died eight years ago. Survivors are a son, Clarence N., Two Rivers; three brothers, Anton, Peter and Joseph, all of this city; sister, Mrs. Theodore Braun, city; and three grandchildren. The body may be viewed at the Beduhn funeral home, Two Rivers tonight and will be brought to the home on North 14th street Tuesday afternoon. The deceased, whose maiden name was Mary Bresnahan, was born in this city and has always made her home here. She was married 33 years ago to Adolph Holsen who survives with one son, Clarence N. PETER HOLSEN Four years ago Peter Holsen, 81, retired farmer residing south of the city, visited a photographer to sit for a picture. At that time he said he wanted to make certain his picture would be available when he died. Mr. Holsen died yesterday at his farm home on route 3, following a year's illness. REINHART HOLSEN Reinhart Holsen, 48, of 709 South 28th street, died last night at his home. Mr. Holsen was receiving clerk at the Chicago and North Western railway freight house. Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Thursday at the Pfeffer funeral home and at 9 o'clock at the St. Paul Catholic church, the Rev. Martin Jaekels officiating. Burial will be in Calvary cemetery. Mr. Holsen was born in Manitowoc in 1897, and 23 years ago married Elizabeth Kattner. Lake street, died at her home this morning at 10:15 o'clock. Death followed a lingering illness. Funeral arrangements have not been completed. Mrs. Hopf was born in Germany May 31, 1857. She came to this country at the age of nine years. She lived with her family in New York for six months and then moved to Manitowoc. On November 28, 1870, she married John Hopf. He preceded her in death. The deceased was a member of the St. Boniface church and the St. Ann's society of that church. The deceased is survived by three daughters, Miss Rose Hopf, who made her home with her mother, Mrs. Albert H. Schuetze of this city and Mrs. Alis Lang of Grand Rapids, Michigan; a son, John J. Hopf of this city; eight grandchildren and two great grandchildren. The body will be removed to the home Thursday evening from the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home. ANTON HORSTKETTER PIONEER OF CO. PASSES AWAY AT COOPERSTOWN Anton Horstketter, aged resident of Manitowoc county and until two years ago making his home in this city, passed away at the home of his sister, Mrs. Anne Bolle, at Cooperstown Sunday evening. He had been ill for a considerable time and had made his home at Cooperstown for two years. Mr. Horstketter was 64 years of age and was preceded in death by his wife six years ago, and is survived by three sons, Joseph and Walter of this city and August, of Milwaukee. He was 75 years old and died of a complication of diseases which had afflicted him for many years and finally affected his heart. Mr. Hoyer leaves a widow, 2 sons and 2 daughters. DONALD J. HUSAR Donald J. Husar, age 82, of 1110 S. 25th St., Manitowoc, passed away peacefully Saturday, July 5, 2008, at home surrounded by his family. He was born in 1925 in the town of Kossuth, son of the late Edward and Emma (Popelar) Husar. Donald attended Manitowoc Lincoln High School and as a senior he enlisted in the United States Navy. He married the former Mae Jackson on June 21, 1950, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manitowoc. They recently celebrated 58 years of marriage. Donald was a meatcutter with Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. (A&P Foods) for 17 years. He then worked as a meat inspector with the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture Trade & Consumer Protection for 23 years, retiring in 1991. For years, Don enjoyed his hobby farm, especially buying and selling cattle, and upon his retirement he loved traveling and going to many antique shops. Don and Mae enjoyed many trips both by car and by bus throughout the United States. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) Donald was preceded in death by one brother-in-law: Everett Belongia; two stepbrothers and stepsisters-in-law: Elmer and Helen Pech, John and Mary Pech; and one stepsister: Lillian Hebel. Don was a very loving husband, father, grandfather and great- grandfather. He was extremely proud of his three girls and their families, especially his great-grandson, Connor. Mr. Hynek was born Dec. 6, 1886, in Manitowoc County, son of the late John and Mary Pivonka Hynek, and lived in Manitowoc County all his life. He married the former Elizabeth Simmer Nov. 18, 1909, and the couple celebrated its golden wedding anniversary in 1959. He owned and operated the Hynek Tavern at Manitowoc Rapids for 23 years until his retirement in 1958 when he moved to Manitowoc. He served as town clerk for Town of Manitowoc Rapids for 31 years prior to his retirement. He was a past president and life member of the Manitowoc County Tavern League. Surviving are the wife; daughter, Mrs. George Paris of Manitowoc; four sons, Melvin, Eugene, Earl and Harland, all of Manitowoc; two brothers, Anton of Racine and Frank of Menominee Falls; three sisters, Mrs. George Wyszynski and Mrs. Joseph Polifka, both of Mantiowoc, and Mrs. Frank Shimon of Whitelaw; 17 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. LILLIAN HYNEK Mrs. Charles Hynek, 73, formerly of 1026 N. 40th St., Manitowoc, and who had resided three years at Shady Lane Home, Manitowoc, died at 3:10 p.m. Sunday at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, where she had been removed earlier in the day. The lifelong Manitowoc County resident was married to Charles Hynek at St. Boniface Catholic Church Nov. 18, 1909. They observed the golden anniversary of their wedding in 1959. The couple owned and operated Hynek Tavern at Manitowoc Rapids 23 years until retiring in 1958 and moving to Manitowoc. He died April 29, 1960. Mrs. Hynek was a member of Christian Mothers Altar Society of St. Paul Church, Catholic Woman's Club, Gold Star Mother and Golden Agers. JOSEPH JAGEMANN Joseph C. Jagemann, 78, of Manitowoc, founder and board chairman of Jagemann Plating Co. there, died of an apparent heart attack at home Wednesday. JOHN P. JAGODENSKY (d. 1945) John P. Jagodensky of 1318 S. 17th street died Sunday night at the Holy Family hospital where he had been confined for three weeks. Mr. Jagodensky, 83, worked for the Manitowoc Building Supply company until his retirement 15 years ago. A native of the town of Newton, he was born April 23, 1862. Forty nine years ago he was married to Sadie Plotka, who preceded him in death eight years ago. He leaves six daughters, Mrs. Herman Techlaw, Detroit, Mrs. Harry Aregood, Chicago; Mrs. Anton Velchek, Mrs. Frank Calos and Misses Gustie and Clara Jagodensky, all of this city; six sons, Frank, Oshkosh, John, Milwaukee, and Robert, Charles, Frank and Albert of Manitowoc. Twenty three grand- children and four great grandchildren also survive. The body was removed to the Pfeffer funeral home and will lie in state from Tuesday afternoon until the hour of funeral rites. At 8:30 a.m. on Thursday short services at the funeral home will preceded a requiem mass at 9 o'clock at St. Andrew's. The Rev. Henry Letz will be celebrant of the mass, and interment will be in Calvary cemetery. Mr. Jagodensky was a member of the Holy Name society and the Catholic Order of Foresters. VERONICA JAGODENSKY OLD RESIDENT DIES Sunday Mrs. John Jagodinski (sic) Dies At 76, Rites Wednesday Mrs. John Jagodinski, 76, died Sunday at 3:35 a.m., at her home, 1309 South 19th street. She was a resident of Manitowoc for the last 45 years. The remains were taken to the residence from the Leschke funeral home Monday evening and the funeral will be held Wednesday at 8:30 a.m., from St. Mary's Catholic church. The Rev. J.M. Pociecha will officiate and burial will be at Calvary cemetery. Mrs. Jagodinski's maiden name was Veronica Petroski. She was born in Poland Feb. 14, 1857 and came to Manitowoc 45 years ago. She was married to Mr. Jagodinski 58 years ago. He died two years ago. Survivors are seven children, Mrs. Selma Luzenski of Wisconsin Rapids, Mrs. Frank Goick of Redgranite, Mrs. Frank W. Tomchek and Miss Rose Jagodinski both of Manitowoc, Nick of West Allis, John of this city and Alois of Owen, Wis. There is one brother, John Petroski of the Town of Liberty, and a sister, Mary Banka of Hoffa Park, Wis. She also leaves 11 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. VALENTINE JAGODINSKI Valentine J. (Tina) Jagodinski, age 90, of 1112 S. 20th St., Manitowoc, died Wednesday morning, Sept. 17, 2008, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc. She was born Oct. 4, 1917, in Manitowoc, daughter of the late Joseph B. and Clara (Vnuk) Tadych. Valentine was a graduate of Lincoln High School, Manitowoc, class of 1935. On Jan. 23, 1945, she married Edward C. Jagodinski at St. Mary Catholic Church, Manitowoc. He preceded her in death Jan. 13, 1959. Valentine was a civil service worker at the Liberal Air Force Base at Liberal, Kan. She was then employed at Manitowoc Engineering Co. for 10 years and retired in 1984 from Copps as the department manager. Valentine was a past member of the Rosary and Altar Society of the former St. Mary Catholic Church. She was a member and past president of the Catholic Women's Club and for many years volunteered at St. Vincent DePaul Society. Valentine also was a member of the Newton Birthday Club, Manitowoc Senior Citizens and was a bus tour guide for the baseball tours for the Manitowoc senior citizens. She also was a voracious reader and an avid sports fan. Valentine was a member of St. Francis of Assisi. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) She was preceded in death by two sisters: Frances Tadych and Lorraine Lesperance; two brothers: Joseph Tadych and Rhinert (Red) Tadych; three brothers-in-law: Terry Lesperance, Gregory Jagodinsky, Joseph Rehrauer and a sister-in-law: Lucille (Joseph) Becker. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 20, 2008, at St. Francis of Assisi on Marshall, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Richard Klingeisen. Valentine will be laid to rest at Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc, at a later date. CHARLES JAGODINSKY Charles Jagodinsky, 69, of 810 S. 19th St., Manitowoc, died just before midnight Monday at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, where he had been removed shorty before after a coronary attack. Landowski will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Jagodinsky was born at Manitowoc, April 5, 1894, son of the late John and Sadie Plotka Jagodinsky. He married Stella Kadow at St. Casimir Catholic Church, Northeim, Sept. 28, 1915, and the couple marked the 48th anniversary of the wedding this year. At the age of 14 he was employed by Mirro Aluminum Co., becoming polishing department foreman when 19, continuing in that capacity until retiring Feb. 29, 1960. He was a member of Mirro Twenty-Five Year Club and Holy Name Society of St. Mary Church. Surviving are his wife, a son, Gregory of Manitowoc; two daughters, Mrs. Joseph Becker and Mrs. Joseph Rehrauer of Manitowoc; three brothers, Robert and Frank of Manitowoc and John of Milwaukee; three sisters, Miss Clara and Miss Gustie Jagodinsky of Manitowoc and Mrs. Anna Tecklow of Detroit; nine grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. SOPHIA JANSEN From Der Nord Westen, 19 Aug. 1909: Recently Miss Sophie Jansen, daughter of Bernhard Jansen, had to undergo a cancer operation in Holy Family Hospital. Initially it appeared that the operation was a success, but the patient was so weakened that day by day the weakness increased until death stopped her suffering on Saturday. The deceased, who would have been 20 years old on Monday, is survived by her sorrowing parents, 4 brothers and 2 sisters. Her funeral was held Tuesday morning from St. Boniface Church.
MARY A. "MAYME" JANSKY Mary A. "Mayme" Jansky, age 98, of 1727 28th St., Two Rivers, died on Friday morning, Oct. 17, 2008, at the Aurora Medical Center, Two Rivers, with her loving family by her side. She was born on April 30, 1910, in the town of Franklin, Manitowoc County, daughter of the late Stephen and Anna (Menchl) Polifka, and special stepfather, Charles Budweiser. Mary attended school in Manitowoc, and on Nov. 25, 1936, married Wencel A. Jansky at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Edward A. Radey presided at the ceremony. Wencel preceded her in death on Aug. 4, 1984. Mary worked at AT&T in Manitowoc for 11 years before becoming a stay-at-home mom. She was a very good cook and was known for her delicious kolaches, plum dumplings and homemade bread and rolls. Mary was a loving, caring person who always had a smile for everyone, and enjoyed the simple things in life. She enjoyed going shopping in Green Bay and buying things for her grandchildren. She enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A few of her favorite things were orange roughy fish from Machut's Supper Club, and her annual trip to Door County, the last one being this past summer. Mary was a member of the Two Rivers Senior Center; St. Peter the Fisherman Catholic Church; the Ladies of St. Peter the Fisherman; and was a charter member of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church. Mary lived with her daughter, (private), who was her main caregiver along with help from (private). (Survivors omitted for privacy.) In addition to her parents, stepfather, and husband, Wencel, she was preceded in death by an infant brother: Tony. ELLEN JOYCE MRS. JOYCE IS DEAD Widow of Atty. Walter Joyce Succumbs At Hospital Early Today Mrs. Ellen Joyce, 65, widow of Walter M. Joyce, for years city poor commisioner, died early today at the Holy Family hospital. Mrs. Joyce underwent an operation two months ago and had apparently recovered. Yesterday morning she suffered an attack and was taken to the hospital for another operation last night from which she failed to rally. The deceased had been a resident of Manitowoc since her marriage to Mr. Joyce in 1901. Mrs. Joyce, whose maiden name was Ellen Healy, was a native of Glenmore, Brown county, where she lived until her marriage to Walter Joyce 33 years ago. They moved immediately to this city to take up their home, and Mr. Joyce entered a law partnership with Mrs. Joyce's brother John J. Healy. Mr. Joyce died two years ago last Thanksgiving. Devout Member Mrs. Joyce was a devout member of the St. Boniface Catholic congregation and had been prominent in church and charitable work during her lifetime. Survivors are five daughters, Marie, a teacher at Hohler, Vivian, at home, Jean, at the Holy Family convent, Silver Lake; Kathleen, a teacher at Oconto, Elaine, a student at Milwaukee State Teachers college; four brothers, Atty. John J., Police Officer C.P., D. M. of this city and Dennis of Seattle, Wash., and three sisters, Mrs. Julia Joyce, Misses Minnie and Nora Healy, all of this city. Funeral services will be held Thursday morning at St. Boniface Catholic church. There will be a requiem mass at 9 a.m. Interment will be at Calvary cemetery. It did not become known until today that McDonough is a first cousin of Walter Joyce, member of the law firm of Healy & Joyce, poor commissioner and humane officer.
