HARRY J. GRACZYKOWSKI Harry was the 2nd of 10 children born to Joseph L. Graczykowski (1870 - 1946) and Anna Kluczykowski (1881 - 1952), both bur. in St. Marys, Manitowoc. He and his siblings Rose (1903), Lawrence (1907), Thomas (1909) and Wesley (1910) were the first white children born on the Lac du Flambeau Indian Reservation. Born Lac du Flambeau, Vilas County, WI/He was married to Jeanette Feltman (1908-1997) in Manitowoc, WI.)


STANLEY J. GRACZYKOWSKI Stanley was the son of Joseph L. Graczykowski (1870-1946) and Anna Kluczykowski (1881-1952), both bur. in St. Marys, Manitowoc. He was married to Justine G. Sobiech (1916-2001) on 22 Nov 1947 at St. Andrews Church, in Manitowoc, WI.

ALVINA GRAYCAREK Mrs. Stanley W. Graycarek, 73, of 2001 Western Ave., Manitowoc, died Monday at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. EDWARD GREEN DEATH ENDS LONG ILLNESS OF EDW. GREEN Edward Green, 56, well known resident of this city, passed away Wednesday after a lingering illness of several years. The deceased, who has made this city his home ever since his birth, August 5, 1845, was employed for a number of years by the Burger Boat company. His widow and seven children, three daughters and four sons, survive. They are: Mrs. Gred Goestal, Mrs. Rueben Schmitt, Mrs. R.A. Fanslau, and Richard, Donald, Milton and Alfred. All are residents of this city. The Misses Ruby and Ida Green, sisters, Walter and William Green, brothers, and Mrs. Theresa Green, mother of the deceased, also survive. The funeral will be held from the late home, 1617 South Tenth street, with services at the St. Boniface church, Saturday morning. Burial will take place at the Calvary cemetery. RICHARD GREEN Richard E. Green, 78, of 1601A Columbus St., Manitowoc, died Thursday at home. THERESA GRETZ Miss Theresa Gretz, 74, of 808A Pine St., Manitowoc, died Sunday evening at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at Pfeffer Funeral Home and at 12 noon at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Leo Schmitt will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. Miss Gretz was born Aug. 28, 1898, at Manitowoc, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Gretz. She had been employed at American Appraisal Co. of Milwaukee for more than 50 years and had resided at Manitowoc the past three years. Survivors include a sister, Mrs. Walter W. THOMAS GRETZ THOMAS GRETZ, ONE OF THE BEST KNOWN CITIZENS OF COUNTY, CALLED BY DEATH LAST NIGHT Thomas Gretz, one of the best known residents of Manitowoc County, and a man than whom none other was held in greater esteem, died at the family residence on South Thirteenth street, at midnight last night, as the result of a stroke of paralysis suffered on Wednesday. Announcement of the death of Mr. Gretz today was received with sincere sorrow throughout the county, as he was widely known. He had resided in the county since 1873, for thirty two years having been a resident of Newton, where he served as town treasurer for several terms and for years represented his town as a member of the county board of supervisors, having been a member of the board at the time the resolution for the erection of a new court house was adopted. Mr. Gretz was a member of a special committee which visited counties of the state to inspect public buildings with a view to securing ideas for the new court house here. Born at Grosslasburg, West Prussia, Germany, on Dec. 1, 1856, Mr. Gretz at the time of his death was in his sixty second year. He came to America with his parents as a boy 12 years of age and after a year in New York the family reached Chicago the year following the fire, and a year later came to Newton, where they settled on a farm. Mr. Gretz made his home on the farm with the exception of three or four years, up to 1905, when he removed to this city. He was formerly employed as a salesman for a Port Washington manufacturing concern and later took over the farm of his father at Newton, which he conducted. Married on Jan. 27, 1880, to Paula Letck of Newton, Mr. Gretz was the father of eight children, all of whom with his widow survive. They are; Mrs. Josephine Ladwig, Mrs. Julia Laukewski of Milwaukee, Cecelia, Martha and Theresa of this city, and Stanley, John and Edward Gretz. John Gretz is postmaster at Cleveland, this county. Three brothers, Ignatz and Joseph of Chicago and Adam of Cooperstown, and two half brothers, Frank and John Vanderski, also survive. Mr. Gretz had always been active in politics in Manitowoc county and in practically every campaign for years has delivered speeches in Polish, German and English for his party. He was affiliated with the democratic party and was active in its work. He was a friend of education and gave of his time and means to the advancement of all educational work, having served for years, ever since he became a taxpayer, as a member of the school board or district No. 9 in which he made his home. He was a member of the Freier Saongerbund and of the Newton Singing society. During his residence at Newton, Mr. Gretz was a member of the Kus?kos Guards and was captain of the guards, which were prominent in early days. The organization was of cavalry and was famed throughout this section of the state. After removing to this city, Mr. Gretz was for ten years manager of the Columbia hotel at Tenth and Marshal Streets. During the past four years he had been foreman and collector for the J. G. MELODY GROELLE Melody Groelle, 22, of 1502A Hamilton St., Manitowoc, died Sunday evening in Calumet County as the result of an automobile accident. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc. The Rev. Edmund E. Olson will officiate. Miss Groelle was born Jan. 19, 1951, at Manitowoc, daughter of Reinhard and Elaine Kaminski Groelle. She was a graduate of Lincoln High School in 1969 and also attended Holy Family College. She had been employed in the Classified Ad Dept. of the Herald-Times-Reporter and also worked part time at Warrens Restaurant. IDA GROLL TAYLOR MRS. TAYLOR, CHICAGO, DIES Former Resident Dies After An Operation Mrs. Alfred Taylor, former resident of this city, died yesterday at Chicago, according to messages received by Manitowoc relatives. She underwent an operation two days ago. The body is to be brought to this city for interment but funeral arrangements have not been completed. Maiden name of the deceased was Ida Riederer and she was born in this city in 1877. She was married at Chicago nine years ago to Mr. Taylor and since resided there. Survivors are the widower; father, Paul Riederer, city; three brothers, John and George of this city and Rueben, Chicago; a sister, Mrs. Edward Kadow, city; four stepsons, Alfred, Gerald, Harold and Waltor Taylor, Chicago; and two stepdaughters, Mrs. Frank Ortman and Mrs. Jack Ludvigsen, both of Chicago. KARL R. GUEHLSTORF Mr. Karl R. Guehlstorf, 83, of Manitowoc died Monday morning, January 15, 1990, at the home of his son in South Milwaukee Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Pfeffer Funeral Home and 11 a.m. at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Presiding at the Mass of Christian Burial will be Rev. Jeff Vanden Heuvel and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mr. Guehlstorf was born May 1, 1906, at Manitowoc, son of the late Henry and Sophie Scheffler Guehlstorf. He was a graduate of Lincoln High School, Manitowoc, Class of 1923. He was employed as a steamfitter for various companies and contractors, retiring in 1970. Mr. Guehlstorf was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 710; Steamfitters Local 601; and the U.C.T. Auxiliary. He married the former Ullanee J. Gigure on November 10, 1932, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manitowoc. After marriage the couple lived in Manitowoc until 1954 when they moved to South Milwaukee. They returned to Manitowoc in 1970. She preceded him in death on July 31, 1989. RICHARD K. GUEHLSTORF Richard K. Guehlstorf, age 70, of Manitowoc, died Monday, Jan, 12, 2004, at his residence. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 16, 2004, at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Officiating at the Mass of Christian Burial will be the Rev. Francis Kerscher with burial at Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. Military graveside rites will be accorded by VFW Otto Oas Post #659, Manitowoc. He was born May 1, 1933, in Manitowoc, son of the late Karl and Ullanee Gigure Guehlstorf. Dick was a graduate of Manitowoc Lincoln High School, class of 1951. He then obtained his associate degree from Lakeshore Technical Institute. Dick also served with the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He was employed for 33 years with Paragon Electric as a tool and die maker, retiring May 1, 1995. He was a member of the Roncalli Athletic Association, serving four terms as secretary. ULLANEE GUEHLSTORF Mrs. Karl (Ullanee) Guehlstorf, 82, of Manitowoc, died Monday afternoon, July 31, 1989, at North Ridge Care Center, Manitowoc. Private family services will be 9:30 a.m. Thursday at Pfeffer Funeral Home and 10 am. at Holy Innocents Catholic Church, Manitowoc. Presiding at the Mass of Christian Burial will be Rev. Leo J. Schmitt with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. The former Ullanee Josephine Gigure was born July 22, 1907, in Hurley, Wisconsin, daughter of the late Joseph and Mabel Ritchay Gigure. She was a graduate of Beloit College and had taught grade school in South Milwaukee and Cudahy. She also was employed at Henderson Hoyt Department Store here in Manitowoc. She married Karl R. Guehlstorf on November 10, 1932, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manitowoc. After their marriage the couple lived in Manitowoc until 1957 when they moved to South Milwaukee and returned to Manitowoc in 1970. Mrs. Guehlstorf was a member of Catholic Womens Club, UCT Auxiliary, Manitowoc Senior Citizens and Catholic Knights. She also was a member and former president of St. Paul Christian Mothers Altar Society, member and former president of St. John Christian Mothers Altar Society of South Milwaukee, member and former president of Holy Innocents Christian Mothers Altar Society, lay communion distributor at Holy Innocents Church and also taught CCD Religious Classes at Holy Innocents. DANIEL J. GURALSKI Daniel J. Guralski, age 85, formerly of Clover Road, Manitowoc, died early on Thursday morning, Aug. 14, 2008, at the Manitowoc Health and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on Nov. 19, 1922, in the town of Reitbrock, son of the late John and Margaret (Bloczynski) Guralski. Daniel was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving during World War II in the field artillery. On June 24, 1944, he married the former Catherine C. Gamble at St. Andrew Catholic Church, Manitowoc. She preceded him in death on Sept. 28, 2005. Daniel was employed as a truck driver for various companies including Schneider Transport and Kingsbury Brewery, and retiring from the Gilson Brothers of Plymouth. He was a member of Teamster Local 75 and St. Francis of Assisi. Daniel enjoyed playing sheepshead, fishing and gardening. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) He was preceded in death by a granddaughter: Cassie; 10 brothers: Walter, Edward, Clarence, David, Albert, Leonard, John, Herbert, Harvey and Joseph; and four sisters: Regina, Sister Louise, Helen and Josephine. JOHN HABLEWITZ (d. 1917) JOHN HABLIWITZ(sic) DEAD AFTER ILLNESS OF ONE WEEK Pioneer Resident of Co. who Was Farmer at Rapids 44 Yrs., Dies John Habliwitz, a pioneer resident of the county and for forty four years a resident of Rapids, where he operated a farm, died at the family home, 901 Twentieth street, Sunday at the age of 71 years. Mr. Habliwitz had been ill but one week. Mr. Habliwitz was born in Germany Aug. 3, 1845 and came to Manitowoc county 54 years ago, locating at Rapids. He removed to the city five years ago. Besides his widow he is survived by five sons, Joseph and Anton of Strathford, Wis., Maryln, Edward and Reinhardt of this city. HAROLD HALL Harold A. Hall, 67, of 1125 S. 14th St., Manitowoc, died Friday at home. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Pfeffer Funeral Home and 10 a.m. at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Leander Schneider, S.D.S., will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mr. Hall was born April 19, 1904, at Menominee, Mich., son of the late William and Louise Leroy Hall. He married Margaret Schliesleder in February of 1927 at St. Boniface Church, Manitowoc. He owned and operated a tavern in Manitowoc until his retirement in 1966. He also served as alderman for three terms in the Third Ward. Mr. Hall was a member of the Manitowoc Tavern League, the Fraternal Order of Eagles No. 706 of Manitowoc and the Holy Name Society of St. Boniface Church. Survivors include his wife, a son, two daughters, five brothers, Clarence of Santa Maria, Calif., William of Sturgeon Bay, Vernon of Reedsville, Lester of Manitowoc and Lawrence of Two Rivers, two sisters, Mrs. Charles Fricke of Minnesota and Mrs. Kenneth Leist of Manitowoc, and nine grandchildren. MARY HALLADA From Der Nord Westen, 22 July 1886: Death of Mary Halaba(sic), almost 12 years old, in an accident day before yesterday about 1:30 in the afternoon. She was the daughter of the fireman at Rahr's Sons Brewery by the name of Wenzel Halaba. She tried to jump onto the Main St. bridge just as it was revolving. She tried to hang onto the iron handrails but was thrown into the water. Her death must have been caused from bruising and internal injuries following which she spent an hour in the water before anyone found her body. ALBERT HANDL DEATH COMES TO ALBERT HANDL AT THE SUPPER TABLE WELL KNOWN RESIDENT SUCCUMBS TO ATTACK OF HEART FAILURE AT MEAL AT THE NORTH HOUSE LAST NIGHT. AGED 55 Death came to Albert Handl, a well known resident of the city, while he was seated at the table at the North House, where he had stopped for the evening meal last night. Heart failure was the cause of death. Mr. Handl was seated at the table with several others in the dining room at the hotel and had just started his meal when it was noted that he appeared to be in distress, his head dropping and his arms falling to his side. Others, seated near him, spoke to the man but received no response and hurrying to his side, found that he was dead. Physicians reported death due to heart failure. Although Mr. Handl had complained for some time of illness, he was about as usual yesterday and when he visited the hotel appeared in his usual health and spirits. He accepted an invitation to remain for the evening meal and had been in the dining room only a few minutes when stricken. Mr. Handl was born in Germany on May 8, 1860 and was 55 years of age at his death. He was a carpenter by trade and had made his home here for years, residing at 944/911? So. Thirteenth street. Besides a wife he is survived by three sons and five daughters. The funeral will be held Friday at 10 o’clock and interment will be at Calvary cemetery. CHRISTINA HANDL Mrs. William Handl, 56, died early Tuesday evening at the home, 911 Park street, after having been ill for two months. GERTRUDE HANDL Gertrude Handl, age 100, presently of Shady Lane Nursing Care Center, Manitowoc, formerly of 907 S. 23rd St., Manitowoc, died early Saturday morning, Feb. 14, 2004 at Shady Lane Nursing Care Center, Manitowoc. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2004 at St. Boniface Catholic Church, Manitowc, with burial to follow at Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. Gertrude was born on Nov. 14, 1903 in Manitowoc, daughter of the late John and Antoinette Gappa Labinski. She married Andrew A. Handl on Oct. 19, 1927 at St. Mary Catholic Church, Manitowoc. He preceded her in death on April 22, 1973. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, 11 grandchildren, 26 great- grandchildren, and four great-great-grandchildren. Nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends also survive. Gertrude was also preceded in death by one son, James A. Handl in 1946; four sisters: Rose Turczynski, Anna Labinski, Mary Labinski, Frances Rathsack; seven brothers: Leo, Stanley, Victor, Frank, Charles, Vincent, and Anton Labinski. HANDL DIES, 72 YEARS Aged Woman Had Been Ill 7 Years; Rites Monday Mrs. Mary Handl, aged 72 years, a resident here her entire life, died Thursday at the family home, 914 South 13th street. She had been an invalid for the last seven years. Funeral services will be held Monday at 9 a.m. from St. Boniface church with interment at Calvary cemetery. The maiden name of the deceased was Mary Bertler and she was born in this city in 1860. She was married here to Albert Handl, who died in 1915. SANDRA M. HANSEL Sandra M. Hansel, age 64, of Two Rivers, died Sunday evening, Sept. 10, 2006, at her residence surrounded by her loving family. Sandra was born Oct. 28, 1941 in Two Rivers, daughter of the late Rienze “Butch” and Marie (Kanugh) Bohne. She graduated from Washington High School with the class of 1960. FRANCIS HARTMAN Francis P. Hartman, age 91, of 1716 Philippen St., Manitowoc, died Saturday, Feb. 2, 2008, at Holy Family Memorial Medical Center, Manitowoc. Francis was born June 6, 1916, in the town of Kossuth, son of the late John and Anna Holschbach Hartman. Francis married the former Ruth Popp on May 15, 1941. She preceded him in death in October 1953. On Dec. 3, 1960, he married the former Pearl Pharris Theodoru at St. Andrew's Catholic Church. She preceded him in death in January 2001. Francis worked for Silver Lake College in the maintenance department for many years until his retirement in 1978. He was a deeply religious man who loved his family and was proud of them. Francis was a member of St. Francis of Assisi Parish, Manitowoc, and Florida Eagles Clubs, Florida Elks Club and Moose Lodge. He enjoyed old-time music, gardening, playing cards, spending winters in Florida, traveling, fixing things and visiting with his family and friends. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) MARY HARTMANN Mary Hartmann, 84, formerly of 314 Riverview Drive, Manitowoc, died Sunday at St. Mary's Home in that city. She was born June 20, 1899, in the Town of Eaton (Manitowoc County), daughter of Joseph Holzer and Mary Basil. On June 6, 1921, she married Philip Hartmann at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. The couple moved to Manitowoc in 1962. They celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in 1971. Mr. Hartmann died June 17, 1978. She is survived by two sons, three daughters, a brother, Herman Holzer of St. Nazianz; 16 grandchildren. PAUL HARTSWORM Paul Hartsworm, 67, of 2705 Clark St., Manitowoc, died Thursday evening at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, following a lingering illness. Mr. Hartsworm was born March 24, 1895, in the Town of Ellington, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. George Hartsworm. He married Mary Bonin June 20, 1918, at Cooperstown and the family resided for a time at Denmark. He was employed for 49 1/2 years by the Chicago and North Western Railroad, Lakeshore Division and was station agent at Maribel for 18 years, operator at Shawano for six years and moved to Manitowoc in 1949 when he became telegrapher. He was a member of Order of Railroad Telegraphers, Holy Name Society of his church, Eagles Aerie 706 and Perpetual Adoration Society. ARLENE A. HAUPT Arlene A. Haupt, age 82, of Shawano, went to her heavenly home on Monday, Jan. 15, 2007, at Birch Hill Nursing Home, Shawano, surrounded by her loving family after a courageous battle with cancer and heart complication. She was born Jan. 14, 1925, in Manitowoc. Arlene was a graduate of Lincoln High School, Manitowoc, with the class of 1943. On Feb. 12, 1947, she married Roy A. Haupt. Arlene was employed in Manitowoc and Shawano, as an LPN for many years. She was a member of the Haupt Cousins Red Hatters and also loved to knit and crochet for her family and friends. SCOTT R. HAY Scott Robert Hay, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert B. Hay, died Wednesday, Oct. 20, at the U.S. Naval Hospital at Naples, Italy. Private family graveside services were held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. The Very Rev. Msgr. Alfred Schneider officiated. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) Mrs. Rober B. ELIZABETH F. HAYDEN Elizabeth F. Hayden, 93, a Manitowoc resident, who resided at St. Mary Home, Manitowoc, died late Tuesday morning, May 13, at St. Mary Home. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Friday at St. Paul Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Ronald Reimer will officiate at the Mass of Christian Burial and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mrs. Hayden, nee Elizabeth Frances Kirby, was born April 20, 1893, at Grimms, Wis., daughter of the late William and Elizabeth O'Conner Kirby. She was married to Thomas Hayden, Nov. 4, 1914, at Maple Grove, Wis. The couple farmed in the Town of Grimms and also resided at Cato and Clarks Mills, prior to settling at Manitowoc Rapids. Her husband preceded her in death Dec. 13, 1971. Mrs. Hayden was an honorary member of St. Paul Parish Women. Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law; four daughters and two sons-in-law; a sister, Veronica Rapp of San Clemente, Calif; 32 grandchildren and 42 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, three sisters and three grandchildren. Friends may call at St. Paul Catholic Church, Manitowoc, after 10 a.m. Friday. THOMAS HAYDEN Thomas H. Hayden, 84, of 314 Riverview Dr., Manitowoc, died Friday afternoon at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be 9:30 a.m. Monday at Pfeffer Funeral Home and 10 a.m. at St. Paul Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Duane Dionne will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mr. Hayden was born Dec. 6, 1887, in the Town of Franklin, son of the late John and Ellen Fenlon Hayden. He married Elizabeth Kirby Nov. 4, 1914, at St. Patrick Catholic Church, Maple Grove. He farmed in the Town of Cato until 1947 and then moved to Manitowoc where he was employed as an engineer at Normington's Laundry, Manitowoc until his retirement in 1958. He was a member of the Holy Name Society. Survivors include his wife, two sons, William, of Stetsonville and John, of New York; four daughters, Mrs. Arthur (Hopora) Dvorak and Mrs. Jerome (Mary) Egbert, of Cato, Mrs. John (Betty) Kelly and Mrs. Donald (Kathleen) Young, of Milwaukee; a brother, Charles, of Manitowoc; four sisters, Mrs. Bessy Rolland, of Reedsville, Mrs. Etta Henning and Miss Blanch Hayden, of Milwaukee, Mrs. Edward Lorrigan, of Chicago; 35 grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. ANGUS L. HAYES Angus L. Hayes, 72, of 905 S. 21st St., Manitowoc, died Friday evening at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, following a coronary attack. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Tuesday at Pfeffer Funeral Home and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Thaddeus J. Koszarek will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc. Mr. Hayes was born June 25, 1900, at Antigo, son of the late James and Agnes McKinnon Hayes. He married Viola Bonnell June 30, 1925, at Antigo. The couple moved to Manitowoc in 1929. Prior to his retirement in 1965 he had been employed at the Great A & P Tea Co. Inc., National Dairy Division, Manitowoc, for 20 years. Mr. Hayes was a member of Holy Name Society of St. Mary Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife, a son, a daughter, four brothers, Thomas, Arthur, James and Dan, of Antigo; two sisters, Mrs. Agnes Goral, of Antigo and Mrs. Louis Rusch, of Oconto Falls; and ten grandchildren.
