Prayer service 8 o'clock this Sunday evening by Deacon Kenneth Nelesen. Herald Times Reporter, August 30, 1981 P. 3 ******** In a long letter home to his parents and sister, Private John I. Franz, son of Mr. and Mrs. August Franz of this city, now stationed at Odival, France says that he will never forget his Christmas of 1918 although he had to forego many pleasures that the day usually afforded at home. Yet that day will stick in his memory forever and he will always tell about how he spent the day and with reason too. Christmas day 1918 Private Franz drew guard duty and no doubt as privates are apt to do when selected for that service on such a day, ? but he is blessing his luck now while he was on duty the president of the United States accompanied by Gen. Pershing and other officers passed his post and he saluted the party and had his salute returned and life surely did seem worthwhile. The president and his party had dinner at the division headquarters. Franz’s chums celebrated his birthday on Christmas day and the boys had a real party. The village that they are located in resides among the hills and reminded the lads of home, a place that they are all longing to get back to. The weather comes in for some unfavorable comment. FRANK FRIEDER Does Change of Man’s Name Apply To Whole Family? Frank Joseph Skoracki, proprietor of the City Bakery, known all over the county, passed away yesterday at the register of deeds office and secured his burial at the nominal sum of $1, a funeral expense that no one should kick on in these days of high prices. No, Frank is not dead, in fact, he is more alive than ever but he has changed his name. Hereafter he is Mr. Frank Joseph Frieder and as Mr. Frieder he will continue his present business and his residence in this city. In citing the reasons for desiring a change Mr. Skoracki said he is fifty-five, was born in Germany, is married and has a family but owns no real estate and is desirous of changing his name to one of less foreign appearance. So hereafter if you go to the City Bakery and you want to talk to the proprietor you will have to ask for Mr. Frieder. What we wondered about was whether the change of the name would extend to Mrs. Skoracki or whether Mr. Frieder would live with Mrs. Skoracki and if it does change the name of the wife then how about the rest of the family. We tried to figure it all out and called up a couple of attorneys but they refused to give an off hand opinion. Anyway that’s Mr. Frieder’s trouble so why should we worry about it. JOSEPH I. BECKER (Fullmer Lot) MAY RESULT FATALLY Joe Becker Falls From Scaffold at the Hospital and is Seriously Injured STRUCK ON HIS HEAD Falls a Distance of Fifty Feet, Fracturing His Skull—Two Others Injured As a result of an accident at the Holy Family hospital late this afternoon, Joe Becker is at the home of his parents, corner of _olmer and 24th streets in a precarious condition and his companion laborers are seriously injured. The three men were working on a scaffolding at the top of the building and were in the act of drawing up a piece of cornice from the ground, when a defective board in the platform gave way and they were precipitated to the ground, a distance of fifty feet. Becker was the first man to reach the ground, and in falling, struck his head on a rock, fracturing his skull. He was picked up by fellow workmen and taken to the home of his parents where a doctor dressed his wounds. A Herald representative was unable to learn much in regard to his condition, except that his recovery is considered doubtful. Becker is 27 years of age and is spoken of by his associates as a man of extraordinary caution. Two other laborers, Oscar Meyer and an unknown man, who were on the scaffold with Becker escaped more fortunately. Meyer struck on his back and suffered severe internal injury, but it is thought it will not result seriously. The other man was severely bruised about the head and his leg is broken.
