WILLIAM EDWARDS (d. 1932) TWO ARE DROWNING VICTIMS WILLIAM EDWARDS, MANITOWOC YOUTH, FAINTED, DROWNED: Harvey Pelishek of Kewaunee Was Victim of Cramps Sunday brought death to two youths, one at Silver Lake west of Manitowoc, the other at Bolt’s lake 18 miles north of Two Rivers. The drowning victims were: William Edward (sic) , 17, Manitowoc. Harvey Pelishek, 16, Kewaunee. Suffering a fainting spell and heart attack as he stood up in a boat at Silver Lake early Sunday morning, William Edwards Jr., 17-year-old factory worker and vocational school graduate, fell into the lake and was drowned. While his two companions in the boat, Claude and Ferdinand Mettler, waited for Edwards, who was a good swimmer, to come to the surface, only bubbles arose. Terrified after several minutes, they marked the spot, hastened ashore in their boat, and drove quickly to Manitowoc in their car to secure help. The body was recovered shortly before nine o’clock Sunday morning, four hours after the drowning. The other drowning victim was… First of Season It was the first drowning of the season in Manitowoc and threw the Edwards household at 912 Buffalo street, where the youth was the principal support of his mother and two brothers, into gloom. Edwards was employed at the Aluminum Specialty Co. His two companions, the Mettler boys of 719 South 16th street, had called for him shortly after four Sunday morning in their small car to go on a fishing trip to Silver Lake. The young man’s mother admitted Sunday that her son had been afflicted with fainting spells or fits the last few days. He had set his alarm clock for four o’clock Sunday morning and after dressing went into the kitchen to eat a bite before his companions called for him. He was taken with a spell there, dropping a china plate to the floor. Last week he had dropped a cup of coffee as he sat at the table. For this reason his mother counseled him to be careful as he hopped into the Mettler car and the trio drove away. Off Small Island The boys secured a boat at Silver Lake and were soon out on the lake. They anchored it about 20 feet off the lake and prepared to cast in their lines. The Mettler boys said that Edwards stool up in the boat, with his feet astraddle the seat, when suddenly his body quivered and he fell headlong into the water without uttering a sound. Bubbles came up and the boys waited but Edwards failed to rise to the surface. They left a board tied to the anchor of the boat, to mark the spot where Edwards disappeared and rowed ashore, climbed into the car and sped to the city. They met Officer George Darbant on Marshall street. He led them to the jail where they aroused Sheriff Herman Carstens who with Deputies Alfred Green, William Ladwig (Continued on Page 11) WILLIAM EDWARDS, MANITOWOC YOUTH, FAINTED, DROWNED (Continued from page 1) and A. F. Rank motored out to the lake with grappling hooks. Officers William Lasch and Wm. McConnell of the police department, also equipped with grab hooks, motored to the scene and soon searching parties were dragging the lake for the body. Sheriff Carstens returned to the city and sped to Two Rivers, where he secured four members of the coast guard there with their special equipment. They made the trip to Silver Lake in their own car. Just as they reached there the other searchers found the body. McConnell hooked the boy’s clothing with a pike pole, in ten feet of water and Alfred Green rowed over with a set of grappling hooks and brought the body to the surface. It was taken ashore and William McConnell worked over the body for several minutes but life was extinct. Much difficulty was experienced by the searchers in locating the body because of the high weeds at the bottom of the lake in which the pike poles and hooked drag lines of those in the row boats became caught. It was announced that no inquest would be held, as it was plainly a case of accidental drowning. The body was removed to the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home. The dead youth had been employed for some time at the Aluminum Specialty Co. and had recently completed his course at the vocational school. Besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. William Edward (sic), he is survived by two younger brothers (names omitted for privacy).
