MAX DROST Max Drost, Local Manufacturer Dies, age 70 Funeral Will be Held Here on Thursday Founded Drost Box Factory in City with Father and Brother Over 50 Years Ago Max Drost, president of the H. Drost Box Manufacturing Company, which he with his brother and father founded in Manitowoc 51 years ago, died Monday afternoon at the hospital. He was 70. Mr. Drost was taken ill less than a week ago with an attack of bronchitis. He developed pneumonia and was removed to the hospital where his condition became critical on Sunday. A heart attack late Monday caused his death. Funeral services for the deceased, who made his home in a three room apartment in the box factory on South Ninth Street, will be held Thursday at 8:30 am from the Pfeffer Funeral home and at 9 am from St. Boniface Church. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery. Mr. Drost, a resident of the city since he came here as a boy with his parents more than 60 years ago had been head of the company since the death of his father and brother. He was born in Germany September 25, 1864, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Drost. They came to America when the deceased was a boy of seven and located in Manitowoc. At the Jay Street residence, Alfred Drost, a brother of the deceased conceived the idea of manaufacturing boxes. Without machinery he began whittling out boxes with a paste pot as his only other took, started in a small way. He was soon joined by his father, Henry and brother, Max. A short time later the firm became known as H. Drost & Sons and moved to a frame factory building on South Ninth Street where machinery was added and the business expanded. In 1904, the company incorporated as the H. Drost Box Manufacturing Company. On the death of his father and brother, Max Drost became head of the company. Expanding business 12 years ago resulted in the company erecting the present three story brick and concrete factory building which adjoins the old frame box factory on the north. The company secured large contracts from the Aluminum Goods Manufacturing Company which resulted in increased equipment being added and more workers employed by the company. Mr. Drost never married but followed a number of hobbies. About the walls of his apartment on South Ninth Street are numerous hand painted plaques the work of Mr. Drost. On one wall is a large hand-painted map in colors of the Western Hemisphere framed with a notation in one corner, “Drawn by Max Drost, July 15, 16, 17, 1879” Music was another hobby of Mr. Drost. He was a lover of the violin and it always had a place on the table in his living room. In one corner stood a hand carved music rack filled with music books, mostly selections of a classical nature. In his evening hours at home alone his violin was his constant companion. Mr. Drost also collected coins, principally from Germany, his native land. The book shelves in the living room are filled with special volumes that Mr. Drost made a habit of collecting. A canary in a cage near the living room window is another reminder of Mr. Drost's love of dumb animals. Mr. Drost, in his leisure hours spent much of his time about town. AGANA LEE DRYLL Youth And Girl, 8, Killed in County Auto Accidents Record Broken for Death Toll in One Year LeRoy H. Wenzlaff and Agana Lee Dryll Weekend Victims The Christmas holiday weekend brought death to a young man and a little girl on Manitowoc County roads. Le Roy H. Wenzlaff, 18, of Rt. 1, Whitelaw, and Agana Lee Dryll, 8, of Rt. 3, Manitowoc, became the county’s 26th and 27th auto fatalities of 1955. The county auto fatality record for a year has now reached its highest peak on record. Wenzlaff was killed Sunday afternoon when his car crashed into a half-ton truck driven by (name omitted for privacy). Agana Dryll was thrown out of her father’s car on the Lakeshore Road about 2-1/2 miles south of Manitowoc Monday evening. Both victims died of cerebral hemorrhages due to fractured skulls. Coroner Dr. Theodore Teitgen said there definitely will be an inquest into the Dryll girl’s death, and there will probably be an inquest into the Wenzlaff fatality. Wenzlaff was killed on a town road about three-quarters of a mile east of Maple Grove at 4:05 p.m. Sunday, county traffic police reported. Wenzlaff was driving east behind a friend of his, Lawrence Krueger. Both autos were eastbound, Mrs. Sheehy was driving west. Krueger was in the lead. He said he believed Eenzlaff was trying to pass him, but due to the dust thrown up by the Krueger car, Wenzlaff apparently failed to see the approaching Sheehy truck. Krueger admitted he was driving 60 or 65 miles per hour. County traffic officers estimated Wenzlaff was traveling 65 or more when he crashed into the truck. Companion Injured The impact smashed in the left front end of the truck and demolished the Wenzlaff car, ripping off the entire left side of the body. The car went spinning into the right hand ditch. Coroner Dr. Teitgen said the left side of Wenzlaff’s head was crushed. He was apparently alive when the officers arrived, but, the coroner said, he was dead or dying when they put him into the ambulance. Wenzlaff’s companion, 18-year-old (name omitted for privacy) suffered a cut left palm and several fractured ribs. She was taken to Holy Family Hospital where her condition is reported “fairly good”. … Agana Lee Dryll was thrown from her father’s car, police said, after he drove through an arterial stop sign onto the Lakeshore Road and the auto went into a ditch, rolling over and flinging the occupants into a plowed field. Coroner Dr. Teitgen said death apparently was instantaneous. The child wasn’t breathing when she was put into the ambulance. Her mother, Ethyl, received lacerations of the forehead. Daniel Dryll, 4, suffered body bruises and the father, Lyle, 30, received right leg bruises. They were all taken to Holy Family Hospital where Agana Lee was pronounced dead. The mother was in fairly good condition, the son is “good” and the father was discharged after treatment. All Thrown Out According to the county traffic police report Dryll was driving up by the Lakesore Road on an ______________ town road . ..UNABLE TO READ REMAINDER OF ARTICLE DUE TO UNDERINKING. Manitowoc Herald Times, December 27, 1955 P. 1 ******** …On Wednesday, the jury will probe the death Monday of Agana Lee Dryll, 8, of Route 3, Manitowoc. GEORGE DUSOLD George Dusold died Mon. noon. The death of the old gentleman occurred quite suddenly as he had been seen just a few days ago meandering about the streets of our city, but he fell ill with bronchitis on Fri. which quickly turned into pneumonia. He died on Mon. after lying unconscious with a fever for many hours. George Dusold was born 20 Jan. 1817 in Roschlaub, Bavaria. He came to America in 1845 and settled in Manitowoc Rapids, at that time our county seat. In 1846 he married Anna Wolf in Milwaukee and soon moved to Manitowoc where he has lived ever since. He established a guest house here on the south side when it was just a wilderness and contained only a half dozen residences. He also worked as a shoemaker which he had learned in Germany. He was naturalized in 1850 following his Declaration of Intent to become a citizen in 1846. His naturalization document is dated 07 Oct. 1850 and is signed by P.P. Smith, the then Court Clerk. His life partner died in 1897. There were 12 children and Mr. Dusold is survived by 9 of them, namely, Mrs. M. Pankratz here, Mrs. W. Schultz in Ozaukee County, and Mrs. P. Riederer, August, Alex, George, Lhelm, Edward and Oliver. The funeral will be held this morning from St. Boniface Church. Der Nord Westen, 14 Apr. 1904 ******** George Dusold, aged 87, died Monday shortly after noon of pneumonia at his home at 623 Jay St., this city. The funeral took place this morning at nine o'clock from St. Boniface's Church, the interment being at the Catholic cemetery. Mr. Dusold was born in Bamburg, Bavaria, Jan. 20, 1817. He came to this country in 1845 settling first in Rapids. A year after, however, he married Annie Wolf and moved to this city where he has since lived. His wife died about six years ago. Mr. Dusold was a shoemaker by trade. During the greater part of his life here he has held some public office, at one time being street commissioner. He has also been active in church work, having been the organizer of St. Boniface's Society and a member of other Catholic organizations. He has had twelve children, nine of whom survive. They are: Emma (Mrs. Michael Pankratz) of this city; Josephine (Mrs. Shultz) of Port Washington; August, Alex and Georgiana (Mrs. Riderer) of this city; George, of Sheboygan, and William, Edward and Oliver of this city. Manitowoc Pilot Thursday, April 14, 1904 pg. 1 ******** Notes of City and Town Folks: August Dusold, Jr., returned to Milwaukee Thursday afternoon. Geo. Dusold returned to Sheboygan the same day. Both were here to attend the funeral of the late Geo. Dusold. Manitowoc Pilot Thursday, April 21, 1904 pg. 5 ******** GEORGE DUSOLD OLD SETTLERS. George Dusold is the father of the German settlement of Manitowoc county. He was born in Bavaria in 1817 and came to Milwaukee in 1845, where he remained one year. Milwaukee was at that time a place of no consequence and Mr. Dusold found it difficult to get steady employment at his trade of shoemaker. He had decided to move to Chicago but learned that he could get employment at Two Rivers. He gave offence the first day to the person who offered him employment and he was told his services were not wanted. He came to Manitowoc which had then only a few small houses, as it had not yet begun to recover from the extreme depression which set in during the latter part of the 30’s. Many of the houses were empty and not much work of any kind was being done. Dusold was unable to obtain any work here and went to the Rapids. He entered a large shanty and found several men lying on a counter. He asked them for work. He was at this time in straits as he only had four shillings in his pocket and was unable to speak English. The men were unable to understand him or he them. A man named Brace took him up to a house on the hill in the direction of Hubbard’s mill, and to a man whom he addressed as “Bill,” “Here’s a man and we can’t tell what he is.” Fortunately “Bill” could speak German and informed Bruce that Dusold was a shoemaker in search of work. A bargain was struck with a man named Masson who had charge of a tannery and shoe shop owned by a Green Bay lawyer named Bird. Dusold received $18 per month and board, though in Milwaukee he worked for $8 per month and boarded himself. Bruce, in order to test his workmanship had a pair of brogans made. They fitted so well that he went about bragging of his shoes and even visited “the Mouth,” as the Rapids people then called Manitowoc, to brag about the skilled workman the Rapids had. This led to a bet with Lawyer Bird who soon after visited the Rapids. One day about 11 o’clock Masson brought a hide fresh from the vat to the shoe shop and told Dusold he wanted a pair of boots made from that hide before 12 o’clock at night. The boots were completed about 11 p.m. Dusold, when the work was done, went to the shanty opened the door and passing the boots to Masson said, “Here are your boots, “I’ve lost the bet,” said Bird. Later on examination of the boots, Dusold then learned that the calf had been killed that morning, that whatever tanning it had received was completed by 11 o’clock in the forenoon of that day, and the bet was that the boots from this hide should be on the feet of the person ordering them before 12 o’clock that night. While at the Rapids Dusold set himself to learning English. His stint was three words per day but these he mastered thoroughly. In 1847 he came to Manitowoc and at first lived in the little house on the corner of York and Seventh street now occupied by Kantsky. Glover had a store near where the Windiate House now is and had a large trade with the Indians. They frequently stopped at Dusold’s house and obtained food. One day several of them were on their way to the store with venison. Dusold asked them for some of it but they told him he couldn’t have any as Thompson wanted it. They always called Glover “Thompson.” When the returned from the store they asked for food but Dusold told them to “go by Thompson.” The Indians perceived the justice of this and begged no more food from Dusold. He moved to the south side in 1847 and built the little house on Jay street near 7th where he still lives. The building was only 14x18 but he kept a boarding house, a saloon and a shoe shop in it. At one time he had 16 boarders. His trade came mostly from immigrants who came in large numbers in 1847 and steadily from that time on until the land in the county was pretty well occupied. In 1847 before Dusold had purchased his property on the south side, he had some thoughts of becoming a farmer and in company with a man named Bandt went to the mouth of Silver Creek to look over 80 acre tracts. So difficult was travel at this time that the distance to this point was called 15 miles, though it could be reached with comparative ease by walking on the lake shore. On their way home they heard the whistle of a steamboat. As the arrival of a steamboat was a matter of some consequence in these early days, they hurried in their way homeward and arrived just in time to see the boat back out from the pier. But Dusold’s arrival was hailed with pleasure as the steamboat landed 40 immigrants none of whom could speak English and no one in Manitowoc could speak German excepting Dusold. The immigrants took quarters at the American House then kept by a man named Paul. This greatly overtaxed the capacity of the hotel but the newcomers sturdily refused to divide up and have some go to the National House, which was located at the north side. The next day they went to work land hunting. Wallich, Lonsdorf, Binger and Jorsch were among the immigrants and had purchased land in Newton. Leist was another and had bought land in the town of Manitowoc. Mrs. Lonsdorf died before leaving the village for her new home. The party for Newton, when they had shanties built, had their household goods moved out there by J. L. Edwards then a lad of 16. A yoke of oxen and one of the old long runner sleds were used, though the moving was done during the summer. The first gold piece Jo owned he received from Willich for this work. All that territory south of Truman & Cooper’s mill was then a marsh and wild ducks were plentiful there. Between Dusold’s houses and Eighth street was an impenetrable hemlock forest. Many of the trees had fallen and were so interlocked that travel through them was next to impossible. Dusold says he could have bought the whole block on which Schuette’s store stands for $50, but it would “take him half a day to get to it” from his house. In 1853 he put up a large building on the corner, the same one which is now being cut down and repaired. He was induced to put up this building by the Newton people. Fred and Carl Schmitz had settled in Newton. They were excellent musicians and organized a band. In these early days there were but a few places in which people could dance and hence a dance was given in Dusold’s little 14x18 house, for which the Schmitz brothers and a few other Newton people furnished the music. The affair was so successful that Dusold thought a large hall would pay and hence built one. All this time Manitowoc had no wagon road except the one through the Rapids. Early in the 50’s Baensch and McNulty were appointed commissioners to open a road westward and they agreed upon the line of the present Calumet road. Later Dusold was appointed commissioner but it was some time before the road was passable. In 1863 he discontinued his hotel and has since not been actively engaged in business. JOSEPH DUSOLD SOMETIMES PEACE IS MORE DANGEROUS THAN WAR Jos. Dusold Escapes “Greasers” Only to be Victim At Home To have escaped the greasers on the border only to come home and shoot himself, was the experience of Private Joseph Dusold of Co. H., who yesterday was cleaning a pistol that he didn’t know was loaded and the weapon was discharged, the bullet passing through the fleshy part of his neck/back (can’t read which). The wound while decidedly painful is not of very serious character. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Thursday, March 08, 1917, Page 1 ******** Joseph Dusold Who Left Here With Company H, Killed in Action in France Messages were received this morning by August Dusold that his son, Joseph Dusold, who left here with Company H, had been killed in action in France. Joseph John Dusold, 32 years of age, who left here with Company H, and who also served with the local militia company on the Mexican border, was killed in action in France on Sept. 2, according to messages from the war department, received this morning by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Dusold, 1111 South Ninth street. The last letter his parents received from him was written on Aug. 13. At that time he said he had participated in six engagements and had come out unscathed and gave reassuring messages to his parents and friends here. He was born in this city on Aug. 10, 1886, and attended the St. Boniface school and the local high school. Later he engaged in the laundry business with August Stahl under the firm name of Stahl & Dusold, conducting the Snow Flake laundry on York street. Mr. Dusold served as a member of Company H for years, being one of the oldest members of the organization and saw service with the local command on the Mexican border. When the United States declared war on Germany, and Company H went to Camp Douglas, Mr. Dusold continued in the service and went to Waco, Tex. And then east to Camp Merritt, N.J., and later overseas. He was located in England for a time and then was transferred to the fighting front in France. Besides his parents, Mr. and Mrs. August Dusold, the deceased is survived by two brothers, the Rev. Father Dusold of Cooperstown and Albert Dusold, of this city, and one sister, Mrs. Joseph Degenhardt of this city. He also leaves his fiance, he being engaged to wed Miss Elsie Landreth of Sheboygan. Corporal Bouril marked the grave of the Manitowoc soldier boy on the battlefield where he fell. Private Dusold with three other men of his detachment were killed outright by the explosion of a German shell as they were digging in while advancing under German fire. Corporal Bouril witnessed the death of the Manitowoc boy and later was privileged to assist in the burial. Corporal Bouril told of the death of Private Dusold today and said that at first the body was not identified because the identification tag furnished to all soldiers had been left by Priv. Dusold at camp, a pocketbook later furnished the means of identification. Manitowoc Herald News, Tuesday, February 11, 1919 Page 8 ********* LETTER TELLS OF DEATH OF CORP. DUSOLD OVERSEAS Comrade, Writing Home, Says that Local Soldier Died Glorious Death Fighting for the Flag Details concerning the death of the late Coporal Joseph Dusold, a Co. H boy who was killed in the war zone several months ago have been received in letters written by Sergeant John Klinkner to his brother George Klinkner of this city, from Ruckeroth, Germany, under date of March 29 while Sergeant Klinkner was still stationed at that point with the army of occupation. Sergeant Klinkner had not mentioned the fate of Corporal Dusold in previous letters because he says, the censorship made this impossible. In the letter just received, however, Klinkner says that he did not see Corporal Dusold when he was hit by a shell but a few moments after was at the scene and witnessed the burial of the Manitowoc soldier, whose body lies at the side of a railroad track, marked by a wooden cross as was the practice in the burial of soldiers. Sergeant Klinkner says that he will be able to locate the body for the family if they desire by means of a map. He says that the shell which killed Corporal Dusold, mutilated his body seriously. “Joe died fighting for his country, that is the highest honor we can bestow upon him. He died like a hero, a true and noble American. I fought with him in Alsace as he was attached to my platoon and I never knew him to falter like many others in the front. He was a thorough soldier, knew not fear or ‘cold feet’ as we term it. Joe had changed after he came to France and was a real man and when I say that I mean everything that it implies. He was a credit to his country and to his parents and his friends are proud of him and the organization to which he belongs,” says the letter of Sergeant Klinkner. Corporal Dusold is buried near Jubigny and the wooden cross which marks his grave is inscribed with his full name and the number of the organization to which he was attached. Sergeant Klinkner says that it is possible that the body may have been taken up and removed to one of the large cemeteries which the Americans have established in France for soldiers dead. Sergeant Klinkner said that on the day he wrote he had received twelve letters from America, all dated about October 14, 1918 and despite the delay was mighty glad to get the mail. He says he is in good spirits and health but says nothing of returning home though relatives believe that he is already enroute with the Forty-second division.
