CATHERINE BARRY DEATH CLAIMES ANOTHER OF CITY PIONEERS Mrs. James Barry Called to Rest Early Today Death claimed another of the early pioneer residents of the city today when Mrs. Catherine Barry, wife of James Barry, succumbed after an illness of few days. Mrs. Barry's death was due to hemorrhage of the brain. Mrs. Barry was a native of county Clare, Ireland, having been born there May 22, seventy seven years ago. She came here in the early 50's and made her home here since. Besides her husband, Mrs. Barry is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Thomas Dorey and Mrs. Mary Wittev, both of this city. Twelve grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive. The funeral will be held from Sacred Heart church Tuesday morning with interment at Calvary. JAMES BARRY "JIMMY" BARRY HAS PASSED ON, DEATH CAME EARLY TODAY Pioneer Settler who Had Resided Here for Seventy Years Dies at Hospital after Illness of One Week, Aged 70 (sic) James C. Barry, ?????? known as "Jimmy," one of the oldest settlers of the city, is dead. Mr. Barry's death occurred at this hospital ????? today, following an illness of only one week, due to pneumonia. His condition was thought to be improving but his advanced age made it impossible for him to combat the disease and he died this morning, following a relapse yesterday. Mr. Barry had been a resident of Manitowoc for seventy years, having located here in 1845. He was a native of County Clare, Ireland, and came to America as a child, his family locating in Ohio and a few years later he came here. For more than a quarter of a century Mr. Barry was employed by the O. Torrison company as a teamster and retired five years ago owing to his advanced age, being 80 at the time of his death. Despite his age he enjoyed good health up to a week ago when a cold developed into pneumonia and ended his life. Mr. Barry was married in 18?? to Catherine Kelley, who preceded him in death a year ago. Two daughters survive, Mrs. T. Dorey and Mrs. G. Wittey, both of this city. Eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren also survive. "Jimmy" Barry had been a life-long democrat and he was proud of his allegiance to the party. He was loyal and for years was the only avowed democrat in his ward and at election it was Mr. Barry's delight to get out and round up voters for his party candidtates and it was his boast that he could get them. The funeral will be held Monday from Sacred Heart church, with interment at Calvary cemetery. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Saturday, May 13, 1916 P.1 ******** James Barry died at the Holy Family Hospital last Saturday morning after a struggle of a week with pneumonia. Mr. Barry was born in County Claire, Ireland, 80 years ago and came to America with his parents when a child. He had been a resident of Manitowoc since 1856. His family were among the first of the Irish settlers in the county and aside from Mrs. Maurice Murphy, he was the last of the large Irish colony that lived near the north side lake front in the early days. He was married to Catherine Kelly in 1860 and survived his wife by one year. Mrs. Barry was a sister of Mrs. J. B. Crowley. Mr. Crowley was an important local political figure in the 60’s. Mr. Barry conducted a hotel during the civil war at a point where the Anderson garage is now located on Commercial street. He was employed later by the O. Torrison Corp. for 30 years. Mr. Barry, during his long residence here was an enthusiastic worker for the Democratic party. He never wavered in his allegiance until the primary law in 1903 abolished the ward caucus. He was a recognized power in the county convention. For decades candidates for the Democratic nominations had to see Mr. Barry about the second ward representation in conventions. He was tireless in arranging the pre-convention affairs and also in working for the ticket afterward. Toward the end younger men were elected party officers but he never realized it and was permitted to continue nominally in control. He served as undersheriff during the incumbency of George Glover as sheriff in the 60’s. Mr. Barry was a good citizen and an honest man. He toiled diligently all of his active years and went out without a stain in his name. He was neither a genius nor a saint but an average Irish American citizen who was proud of his origin, who earned his living, reared his family in the faith of his fathers, paid his own way and asked no odds. He is survived by two children, Mrs. Thomas Dorey and Mrs. George Wittey, both of this city; also eleven grandchildren and three great grandchildren. The funeral was held from the home of the Sacred Heart Church, thence to Calvary. Manitowoc Pilot - Thurs., May 18, 1916

PETER BAUER The death Saturday afternoon of Peter Bauer, 74, at his farm home about a mile north of Manitowoc Rapids was attributed to a heart attack by Coroner Theodore Teitgen. The coroner was called to the farm because of the fact that Bauer was found in the pig yard at the farm with five pigs eating at his exposed parts of the body, the face and hands. Bauer was found by his wife and was brought to the house after his son Victor and neighbors had driven the pigs off. The coroner said Bauer had suffered a heart attack before being attacked by the pigs. Mrs. Bauer said her husband had been ill with heart trouble for several weeks and had been ordered not to go out of the house. He had, however, taken much pride in his stock that he occasionally went out to see them. Saturday he went out shortly before 4 p.m. and when he did not come back within a few minutes his wife went out to look for him and found him in the pig yard. She then called the son, Victor. On other occasions when he had gone out, his 14-year-old grandson went with him but Saturday the boy was helping with other work. Bauer was found about 15 minutes after he left the house. Funeral services will be held Tuesday morning, at 8:30 from the Pfeffer funeral home and at nine o'clock from the St. Paul's Catholic church with the Rev. Martin Jaekels officiating.
