EMMA M. SCHMIDT Mrs. Fred Schmidt, 86, a former Chilton resident, of 545 S. 30th St., Manitowoc, died Monday morning at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Mrs. Schmidt, nee Emma Leider, was born May 10, 1886, at Manitowoc Rapids, daughter of the late Gottfried and Augusta Gohike Leider. She was married to Fred Schmidt May 27, 1905, in the Town of Liberty. They resided in Sheboygan Falls, the Town of Liberty and Chilton before moving to Manitowoc in 1966. Her husband preceded her in death in 1966. Survivors include two daughters, Miss Viola and Mrs. Mepa Koepsel, of Manitowoc; a brother, Paul, of Valders; four grandchildren and five great grandchildren. FREDRICH L. SCHMIDT Fred L. Schmidt, 88, of Rt. 4, Chilton, died Sunday at Calumet Memorial Hospital, Chilton. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at St. Martin Lutheran Church, Chilton. The Rev. Ernst Schmidtke of Sheboygan will officiate and burial will be in Trinity Cemetery, Town of Liberty. Mr. Schmidt was born Aug. 23, 1877, in Bonduel, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schmidt. He married Emma Leider May 27, 1905, in the Town of Liberty, and for the last 38 years the couple lived at its present address. He worked for the Milwaukee Road before his retirement. Survivors are the wife, two daughters, Miss Viola, at home and Mrs. Meta Koepsel, of Manitowoc a sister, Mrs. Anna Emke, of Bonduel, four grand- children and five great grandchildren. ALWINA SCHNELL Mrs. Louis J. Schnell, 84, of Liberty, died Sunday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Arthur Thiel, in the village of Manitowoc Rapids. She made her home with her daughter the past two years. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Liberty. The Rev. Samuel Kugler will officiate and burial will be in the adjoining cemetery. Mrs. Schnell was born Alvina Kahn in Germany in 1869 and at the age of 18 came to this country. She was married in Milwaukee in 1892 to Louis Schnell and a year later moved to the homestead farm in Liberty, where she resided for 60 years. Mr. Schnell died in 1942. Survivors are three daughters, Mrs. Arthur Thiel of Manitowoc Rapids, Mrs. Leonard Furhman of Newton and Mrs. Orley Halverson of Milwaukee; son, Walter, on the Liberty home farm; ten grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. AUGUSTA SCHNELL MRS. AUGUSTA SCHNELL DIED YESRERDAY Mrs. Augusta Schnell, wife of Louis A, Schnell, South Fourteenth street, who moved into the city from a farm in Liberty, died at 2 o'clock p.m. yesterday after, an illness of about two months from heart trouble. Mrs. Sehnell was born in town Liberty in 1859 and celebrated her 50th birthday last Dec. 31. Her maiden name was Catherine Schnell and she was married to Louis Schnell in 1884. There are no children surviving, the couple, being childless. There are five brothers and four sisters survivlng, however. Arrangements for the funeral have not yet been completed. JOHANN F. SCHNELL KILLING OF PIG RESULTS IN DEATH OF MANITOWOC MAN John Schnell, a well known Manltowoc county farmer died at his home following a stroke of apoplexy which he suffered as a result of overexertion. Responsibility for Mr. Schnell's death can be laid to a pig. While engaged in butchering on the farm, one of the pigs selected for killing became refractory and Mr. Schnell while attempting to hold the animal and complete the work of dispatching it, suffered a rupture of a blood vessel in the brain from which death later resulted. Mr Schnell was 60 years of age and had enjoyed robust health all his life and his sudden death is a great shock to all who knew him. He was widely known in the section where he made his home. Besides a widow, Mr. Schnell Is survived by five chlldren, two daughters and three sons. Several brothers and sister also survive. The Sheboygan Press, Tuesday, February, 21, 1919
LOUIS A. SCHNELL (d. 1934) Louis A. Schnell, Town of Liberty Farmer, Dies Louis A. Schnell, 76, retired Town of Liberty farmer, died at 5:40 p.m Wednesday at the home of his niece. Mrs. David Stewart, 913 South 14th street, following a stroke. The body was removed to the Stewart residence late this afternoon from the Wattawa, Urbanek & Schlei funeral home. Services will be held at the residence at 2 o'clock Saturday and at the Liberty Lutheran church at 3 o'clock. The Rev. P. Hensel will officiate and burial will be in the adjoining cemetery. Mr. Schnell was born July 8, 1857 in Liberty. He married Miss Augusta Schnell May 23, 1884. Twenty-six years ago they moved to Manitowoc and Mrs. Schnell died the following year. SCHNELL (d. 1942) Funeral Servives For Louis Schnell Held Wednesday Valders, Wis. - Funeral services for Louis Schnell, aged 83, lifelong resident of the Liberty township, who passed away Saturday afternoon, April 25, after an illness of a few days, were held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Berge Funeral home here, and at 2 o'clock at Trinity Lutheran church in Liberty township, the Rev. E. C. Schroeder officiating. He became ill while attending a funeral service for his grand-daughter, Mrs. Thomas Blacklock, at St. Wendel, Wednesday, April 22. Interment was in the church cemetery, six grandsons serving as pallbearers. Deceased was born May 29, 1858, in Liberty township, eldest of a family of five boys and five girls. He was 16 years of age when his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Adam Schnell, bought the farm on which the family have since lived. On March 9, 1892, he was married to Miss Ida Kahn of Milwaukee. For 50 years the Schnells have been a member of the Liberty Trinity Lutheran church and Mrs. Schnell has been a member of the Ladies' Aid. In March, this year, the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. Survivors are the widow; one son, Walter, of Liberty township; three daughters, Mrs. Leonard Fehrman of Newton, Mrs. Art Thiel, route 4, Manitowoc, and Mrs. Orley Halverson of Milwaukee; nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren; three brothers, Charles and Herbert of Newton, and August of Liberty, and one sister, Mrs. Fred Kieselhorst. WILLIAM A. SCHNELL BARN CAVE-IN VICTIM DIES OF INJURIES Skull Fracture and Internal Chest Injuries Prove Fatal To William Schnell William Schnell, 44, town of Liberty farmer, one of eight men injured Tuesday morning in the collapse of the framework of a barn under construction near Gjerpen, died at 10 o'clock Wednesday night at the Holy Family hospital. Schnell died of a skull fracture and serious internal chest injuries. He also had a compound fracture of one leg. He was crushed under several timbers 10 inches wide and 10 inches thick and never fully regained consciousness. Dr. Gerald Rau, county coroner, Sheriff Normnn Berkedal and Dist. Atty. John R. Cashman went to the scene of the accident this afternoon and the result of their investigation will determine whether an inquest will be held. The seven other persons hurt in the accident are all reported to be out of danger and most of them have returned to their homes. 50 WERE ON JOB Workmen who were alongside Schnell at the time of the accident said that he apparently was hit as he tried to avoid being struck by a ladder. Schnell was a member of a crew of about 50 volunteer work-men who were engaged in constructing a barn on farm property adjacent to the Grace Norwegian church and owned by the Norwegian Lutheran Synod of the American Evangelical church. Mr. Schnell was the son ot Mr. and Mrs. Louis J. Schnell who lived with him on the homestead farm in the Town of Liberty near the Liberty Lutheran church. He was born on that farm March 24, 1893. Besides his aged-parents, he is survlved by one brother, Walter of Newton, three sisters, Mrs. Arthur Thiel of Liberty, Mrs. Leonard Fehrmann of Newton and Mrs. Orley Halverson of this city, six nephews and four nieces. IRMA SCHROEDER Mrs. E. C. Schroeder, 36, wife of the pastor of the Trinity Evangelical Lutheran church in the Town of Liberty, died Friday at 6:45 p.m. at the parsonage. She had been ill for several years. Mrs. Schroeder, formerly Irma Kramer, was born in a German colony in Russia Nov. 1, 1902. The family came to the United States in I902 and established residence in Milwaukee. She was married in Milwaukee July 12, 1930. The couple moved to Liberty three and one-half years ago when the Rev. Mr. Schroeder was assigned to the Trinity church. The survivors are the widower, the parents, Mr. and Mrs. Conrad Kramer, Milwaukee, two brothers, Walter and John, and three sisters, Mrs. J. E. He was also a charter member of the Men's Club, Liberty. SELLE, 67, GETS SUMMONS Ill For 12 Years; Funeral Will Be Held On Tuesday Mrs. Julius Selle, 67, nee Anna Lulloff, died at her home, 1905 Franklin street, this morning following a lingering illness. Mrs. Selle had been ailing for almost 12 years. Funeral services will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 from the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home and, at 2 o'clock from the Liberty Lutheran church, town of Liberty. Burial will be in the adjoining church cemetery. Born Feb. 22, 1869, in the town of Schleswig, Anna Lulloff married Julius Selle 47 years ago. Until seven years ago the couple lived on a farm in the town of Liberty. They retired and moved to Manitowoc. Survivors include the widower, a son, Emil, on the homestead farm, a daughter, Mrs. Otto Leider of Manitowoc: three brothers, August of Vaiders. CARL SELLE Carl Selle, a well known farmer of Liberty, died at his home there last night at the age of 57 years. Mr. Selle had been a sufferer from heart trouble for two years but his death was unexpected. He is survived by a widow and four children. FRIEDERICKE SELLE Fredericke, widow of William Selle, pioneer resident of the town of Liberty passed away at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Auguste Lemke, yesterday aged eight-four years, the inffirmities of age causing her death. She was born in Germany, April 7, 1836, and came to this country and county with her husband in 1866, locating in the town of Liberty. Besides Mrs. Lemke, one son, Julius Selle, survives her, also eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren. JULIUS SELLE JULIUS SELLE PASSES AWAY Heart Attack Proves Fatal To Retired Farmer Here Julius Selle, 70, retired farmer, died suddenly of a heart attack Monday afternoon at the home, 1905 Franklin street. Mr. Selle had been out for a walk during the afternoon. When he came home he sat down in a chair to rest and was stricken. His daughter, Mrs. Otto Leider, who was at the home, summoned a physician. Mr. Selle died in a few minutes. Funeral Thursday Funeral services will be held Thursday at 1:30 p.m., from the Wattawa, Urbanek and Schlei funeral home and at 2 o'clock from the Trinity Lutheran church, Liberty. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery. Mr. Selle was born in Germany, Jan. 1, 1860. While a child his family immigrated to America and located at Liberty. He took up farming, later assuming charge of the homestead farm which is now operated by a son, Emil. Forty-seven years ago Mr. Selle married Miss Anna Lulloff. Seven years ago Mr. and Mrs. Selle retired and moved to this city. Mrs. Selle died last July. Survivors are a son, Emil, Liberty; a daughter, Mrs. Otto Seiler, city; three grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The body may be viewed at the funeral home. WILHELM SELLE Charles Sell (sic), aged 87, a pioneer of the town of Libety died last night from a general breakdown. He had been sick several weeks. The funeral will be held Saturday at two o'clock. Mr. Sell prided himself upon the fact that he was never ill during his life and never needed the services of a doctor. Two sons and several daughters survive. AGNES (MATTHIAS) SKOGLUND Mrs. Anna Skoglund, wife of John Skoglund of Milwaukee died Monday afternoon at the home of her brother, Albert Matthias, at Neenah, her demise following two months of illness during which he had been cared for at the Matthias home. The funeral will be held tomorrow, Thursday, afternoon with services at the Liberty Lutheran church, Rev. Hensel officiating and burial will be at the Liberty cemetery. Mrs. Skoglund, who was Agnes Matthias before her marriage, was born at Sheboygan, August 17, 1890 and removed to Liberty, Manitowoc county with her parents as a babe. She was married October 19, 1924 at Milwaukee and had made her home in that city since. Sonnenberg, 52, Liberty-Farmer-Dies In Sheboygan Hospital William Frederlck Sonnenberg, 52, former Newton resident and who was located in Liberty passed away Monday at the St. Nicholas hospital, Sheboygan, after a two week illness. The deceased was born in Newton Oct. 23, 1875 and was married to Miss Anna Borgwardt June 14, 1899, they removing to Liberty to reside. Besides the widow, one daughter Lillian Sonnenberg, one sister, Mrs. Carl Waack of Manitowoc Rapids and two brothers, August at Sheboygan and Herman of Newton survive. ANITA STOCKMEIER GIRL DIES AS SHE PREPARES FOR OPERATION Miss Anita Stockmeier died Tuesday afternoon at the home of her parents Mr. and Mrs. William Stockmeier at Valders while under the influence of ether in preparation for an operation for removal of her tonsils. The operation was undertaken at the home where a sister, Viola, had successfully undergone a similar operation during the morning. Death is said to have been due to heart failure. Miss Anita Stockmeier was born at Valders and this fall was to havo entered at high school at Howard's Grove. She was 16 years of age and one of the popular young ladies in the younger circles at the village. The funeral will be held Friday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the home with services at the Liberty Lutheran church, the Rev. Hensel officiating and burial will he at the Liberty cemetery. AUGUST TEESCH August Teesch, 73, Town of Cato farmer died at 2:30 o'clock this morning at the homestead, Manitowoc route 4, of a heart attack. Funeral services will be held on Monday at 1:30 p.m. from the family home and at 2 o'clock at Trinity Lutheran church, the Rev. E. C. Schroeder officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The body will be taken from the Pfeffer Funeral home to the family home on Saturday afternoon, and it will lie in state at the home until hour of the funeral. Mr. Teesch was born in DuPage county, Illinois, on June 15, 1869, and when he was six years old the family moved to this county. Mr. Teesch had lived here since. On May 31, 1900 he married Bertha Ott. He was married May 27, 1916 to Marie Nass and the couple resided in the Town of Liberty all of their life. Vetter was a farmer, carpenter, and operated a saw mill on the farm. ELROY E. VETTER Farmer Killed When Board Pierces Chest Elroy E. Vetter Fatally Injured While Sowing Valders---A 39 year old farmer was killed almost instantly Wednesday afternoon when a board pieced his chest during a sawing operation. Elroy F. Vetter of Rt 1. Valders, and two other men were lifting a board during sawing operation at the sawmill on the Vetter farm when the board caught in the saw and was sent flying. The two by six board hit Vetter in the chest. Vetter was taken to Valders for treatment but Dr. Theodore Teitgen, Manitowoc County coroner believed that Vetter was killed almost instantly after the accident. The accident happened about 4:15 o'clock at the sawmill on the 100-acre Vetter farm where logs were sawed into boards for neighboring farmers. Vetter, father of five children, was working with Theodore Damm and Adam Durben at Rt. 4, Chilton, at the time of the accident. The three men were cutting boards for Durben. Doctor Teitgen said there would be no inquest. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in the Town of Liberty with the Rev. Samuel Kugler officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Vetter was born Nov. 8, 1918, in the Town of Liberty, son of the late Edwin and Marie Nass Vetter of Manitowoc. He attended the University of Wisconsin agricultural short course. He served for four years in the Air Force during World War 11, including service as an aerial gunner while stationed in England and attained the rank of sergeant. On June 15, 1947, he married Karolyn Bathke. In addition to farming in the Town of Liberty, he had operated a sawmill for the past year. He was a member of Trinity Lutheran Church. He was also active as a bowler. Surviving are his wife, a daughter, (private), and four sons, (private), mother of Manitowoc, three brothers, Willard of Delhi, N.Y., Vernon of Valders and Edward with the Army in Germany; three sisters, Mrs. Edgar Pleuss of Valders, Mrs. Virgil Cogswell of Manitowoc and Louella Vetter of Manitowoc, and several nieces and nephews. FRED VETTER Fred Vetter, 77, life long resident of the county, died last night at his home in Valders where he had resided for 14 years. He had been in failing health for a month and this week was strcken with a heart attack. Funeral services will be held Friday, at 1:30 p.m. from the Grace Lutheran church, Valders. Burial will be in Liberty cemetery. Mr. Vetter was born in Liberty and when a young man operated a cheese factory in the town of Manitowoc Rapids. Later he took up farming and owned farms in Cato and Liberty. In 1925 he sold his farm and retired in Valders. He married Miss Sophia Bremmer in 1883. ADOLPH WEHAUSEN Adolph Wehausen, 63, lifelong county resident, died Monday at the Holy Family Hospital, following a lingering illness. He was born in Liberty in 1885 and in 1913 married Miss Linda Fischer. They located on a farm in Liberty. Seven months ago he disposed of the farm to his son, Paul, and moved to Newton. He was treasurer of the Baryenbruch Telephone company for 20 years and secretary of the Cemetery association of the Trinity Lutheran church of Liberty. Survivors are his wife; a son, Paul, and daughter-in-law Doris of Liberty; five brothers, John, Herbert and Henry of Milwaukee and Louis and Emil of Liberty; two sisters, Mrs. Arnold Habermann of Brillion and Mrs. Carl Roedig of route 5, Manitowoc. The body may be viewed at the Berge funeral home after Wednesday noon and will be moved to the Trinity Lutheran church, Liberty at 10:30 a.m. Thursday where services, in charge of the Rev. A. M. ELLA WEHAUSEN PASSES AWAY AT MILWAUKEE, IS BURIED HERE The body of Miss Ella Wehausen, 24, who died at Milwaukee where she had been receiving treatment after a short illness, was brought here and buried from the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Wehausen at Liberty. ERNST WEHAUSEN Town Of Liberty Man Passes Away Manitowoc. - Ernst Wehausen, 71, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Reinhold Bauch in the town of Liberty, Wednesday morning. Mr. Wehausen was born in town of Liberty in 1860 and was married there in 1882 to Christine Carstens in the town of Newton. Mrs. Wehausen passed away in 1910 and a year later Mr. Wehausen moved to Brillion where he lived on a farm until 1927 when he returned to reside with his daughter. He is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Reinhold Bauch, Liberty, Mrs. Adolph Lippert, Mrs. Elmer Schwanke of Brillion and Mrs. Erwin Zeddies, Manitowoc; three sons Fred, Rev. Martin Wehausen of Johnson, Minnesota; and Alfred of Brillion; two sisters, Mrs. John Schnell of Liberty and Mrs. Anna Carstens of Newton; and one brother, Henry of Liberty. FRED C. WEHAUSEN Fred Wehausen, 67, of Manitowoc, retired cheesemaker and farmer, died Sunday morning following a lingering illness. Mrs. Wehausen, the former Hildegard Schreiber, was born Oct. 5, 1904, in the Town of Meeme, a daughter of the late August and Helene (Schneider) Schreiber. She married Louis Wehausen on Jan. 28, 1925, at St. John Lutheran Church, Town of Herman. The couple farmed in the Town of Liberty until 1962 when they retired and moved to their present home in the Town of Valders. Mrs. Wehausen was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church Ladies Aid Society. JOHANNA WEHAUSEN TOWN LIBERTY PIONEER DIES AT AGE OF 64 Mrs. Henry Wehausen, aged 64 years, a native of this county who suffered a stroke a year ago, passed away yesterday afternoon at the family home in the town of Liberty. Her maiden name was Johanna Carstens and she was born in the town of Newton. Funeral services will be held on Sunday afternoon at two o'clock from the family home with interment in the Liberty cemetery. Besides the husband, two daughters, Mrs. A. Born in Germany Mrs. Zastrow, whose maiden name was Frederlcka Schimmelpfennig, was born in Germany in 1856 and when a child accompanied her parents to this city. She married Ferdinand Zastrow here in 1877 and they located on a farm in Liberty. Mr. Zastrow died 20 years ago after which the widow lived with a daughter, Mrs. Ella Garlock at Waukesha. Three years ago she returned to this city to make her home with her brother. Survivors are a son, Albert, Fond du Lac; two daughters, Mrs. Garlock, Waukesha, and, Mrs. Anna Bratz, Reedsville; a brother, Chris Schimmelpfenning, city; a sister, Mrs. Emily Lorberblati, city; 11 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. WILHELM ZASTROW The Angel of Death entered the home of Mrs. Zastrow near Valders and claimed her beloved son. He underwent an operation on Saturday and died the next Wednesday.
