ADOLPH OTTO Two Killed When Car Rolls Off Road, Runs Into Barn Adolph Otto and Joseph Theobald Victims of Night Crash Adolph Otto, 60, former chairman of the town of Liberty, and Joseph Theobald, 26, ot 517 Franklin street, were instantly killed last night on Highway 141 about eight miles south of the city. Otto's car, driven by Theobald, swerved into the right ditch, careened back onto the highway, crossed the road and rolled into a barn owned by George VandeLoo. The car traveled for 150 feet along the west shoulder of the highway before careening across the road. The front top of the car evidently crashed into the barn as the machine was rolling over. The car settled on its wheels in a ditch paralleling the highway, halfway around the corner from the point where it hit the building. It was believed that the machine may have rolled end over end, crashing into the barn in the middle of a roll. The car was headed south when the accident occurred. The two deaths brought the county's highway fatality toll for 1939 from four to six, an increase of 50 per cent. When the sheriff's department was notified of the accident, at about 10:30 last night, it was first reported that three people were dead. Identification Mixup Otto, who was thrown across the back of the front seat, was identified almost immediately. Papers belonging to the town of Liberty school board bearing Otto's name clinched the identification. The younger man, who was found half on the driver's seat and half on the ground, tightly jammed between the frame of the car and the open, crushed door, could not be immediately identified. After a short time, however, someone identified him as Otto's son. Norbert. It was not until G. K. Berge, Valders undertaker, took the bodies to Valders and it was found Norbert was at his home that Theobald was identified. County Officer William Ladwig and Deputy Kenneth Hendrich were first to arrive at the accident scene from the Sheriff office. Shortly after Deputy Eugene Spevachek and Dr. Gerald Rau, county coroner, arrived. Sheriff Norman Berkedal and other deputies, as well as District Attorney Patrick Dewane, were also called. Chief J. J. Kuplic and Capt. of Detectives Frank Tomchek of the police department here drove to the accident when they heard of it. Shortly before the crash two men had held up an oil station here and they felt it was possible that the men killed in the crash might have been the robbers, fleeing the city. When Otto was identified however, police returned to Manitowoc. It was not known to authorities today where Otto and Theobald were going or where they had met. Otto was in the city yesterday afternoon attending a meeting of county fox breeders at the court house. Theobald, his wife said, was gone all day yesterday and returned home for a few moments at about 8 o'clock last night, leaving again without telling her where he was going. Otto Well Known Adolph Otto, 69, town of Liberty farmer, fox farm operator and Valders businessman, was a lifelong resident of the county. He was born in 1879 on the homestead farm which he has since operated. In 1905 he married Miss Huleah Kasbaum of Liberty. When a young man he took an interest in town affairs and was named to the town board and later was chosen chairman and represented Liberty on the County Board from 1924 to 1930 and again from 1933 through 1937, when he was succeeded by Elmer Rogue. Mr. Otto serviced as president of the Valders Elevator company in Valders for 19 years and for 27 years has been clerk of Liberty School district No. 2, the school building being located on a portion of the Otto farm near Valders. He was also a director of the Gjerpen-Valders Telephone company. In addition to farming Mr. Otto operated the Roselawn Fur farm, being assisted by his son, Norbert. His 11 year service on the County Board included membership on a number of important committees. Survivors are the widow; two daughters, Mrs. Ervin Schneider and Miss Leila, both of Sheboygan; son, Norbert, on the home farm. Funeral Saturday Funeral services will be held Saturday at 1:30 p.m. from the Berge funeral home in Valders. The body is at the funeral home. Joseph Theobald, 26, was a son of Mr, and Mrs. Thomas Theobald........ Manitowoc Herald Times, Wednesday, October 25, 1939
