EDWARD ANDRES 16 Year Old Town of Kossuth Boy Dies Edward Andres, aged 16, died this morning at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Andres on a farm in the town of Kossuth. Besides the parents, one brother, John and three sisters, Martha, Mildred and Elizabeth also survive. The deceased was the victim of the flu. JOSEPH ANDRES Joseph Andres, 87, of Whitelaw, died Tuesday afternoon at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Friday at Saur Funeral Home, Kellnersville. The Rev. John Haen will officiate with burial in St. Augustine Cemetery, Rief Mills. Mr. Andres was born Dec. 12, 1887, in the Town of Franklin, son of the late Jake and Elizabeth Nicoli Andres. He married Mary Vraney Dec. 1, 1909, at Francis Creek. They farmed in the Towns of Franklin and Kossuth, retiring in 1960 when they moved to Whitelaw. Mrs. Andres preceded him in death March 20, 1972. Survivors include a son, John, of Manitowoc; three daughters, Mrs. Charles (Martha) Cisler, of Branch. Mrs. Norman (Mildred) Kiel, and Mrs. Norman (Elizabeth) Bergene, of Rt. 1, Cato, 16 grandchildren, 46 great grandchildren and seven great great grandchildren. MARY ANDRES Mrs. Joseph Andres, 82, of Whitelaw, died Monday morning at Memorial Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be held at 10:15 a.m. Wednesday at Saur Funeral Home, Kellnersville. The Rev. John Haen will officiate and burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery, Reif Mills. Mrs. Andres, nee Mary Vraney, was born June 20, 1889, in the Town of Kossuth, daughter of the late Wencel and Anna Karbon Vraney. She was married to Joseph Andres Dec. 1, 1909, at Francis Creek. The couple farmed until retirement in 1940, moving to Whitelaw. The couple celebratd its 62nd wedding anniversary in 1971. Survivors include her husband, a son, John, of Rt. 1, Whitelaw, three daughters, Mrs. ????? (Martha) Cisler, of B???? and Mrs. Norman (Mildred) Kiel and Mrs. Norman (Elizabeth) Bergene, of Rt. 1, Cato; two brothers, Frank, of Kellnersville and Wencel, of Manitowoc; 16 grandchildren 43 great grandchildren and two great great granchildren. BARBARA BAUMANN From Der Nord Westen, 04 Oct. 1906: Death Wednesday last week of Mrs. Baumann, an old and respected resident of Town Franklin, at the home of her daughter here, Mrs. A. Biberitz. She was 75 and had come to America in her youth. The body was taken to Kellnersville and the funeral held there Saturday.


CLARA BLAHNIK Mrs. Clara Blahnik, a resident of Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, died Wednesday at the hospital. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Schneider-Mittnacht Funeral Home and at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. James Craanen will officiate and burial will be in St. Augustine Church Cemetery, Rief Mills. Mrs. Blahnik nee Clara Seibel, was born in the Town of Kossuth, daughter of the late John and Mary Neuser Seibel. Her husband preceded her in death Jan. 24, 1968. Mrs. Blahnik was a member of Sacred Heart Church. Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Milton (June) Hanson of Manitowoc, Mrs. Roy (Lucille) Oquist of Ludington, Mich., and Mrs. R.A. Luebke and Mrs. Harlend (Genevieve) Larson of Manitowoc, two brothers, John of Clintonville and August of Riverside, Calif., three sisters, Mrs. Robert (Rose) Thoke, Mrs. Frank Smejkal and Mrs. Regina Lensmire of Manitowoc, 12 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. FRANZ FETZER From Der Nord Westen, 16 Feb. 1888 Death last Sat. (11 Feb.) near Branch Mills, of Mr. Franz Fetzer, one of the oldest and best known farmers of our county. The deceased was the last of the widely known and respected Fetzer brothers. He leaves a grieving widow and five grown children. Burial took place on Tues., 14 Feb., in the Catholic Cemetery in Town Kossuth.


ANNA HAVLOVIC Mrs. Peter Havlovitz, one of the oldest residents of this vicinity died at her home Tuesday noon, aged 91 years. The deceased who was born in Bohemia, came to this country 50 years ago. The children left to mourn her loss are: Mrs. Geo. Oswald, Mrs. Joe Weisner, Mrs. Joe Havlinek, and one son, Mat Havlovitz. ALLEN HAVLOVITZ Allen Havlovitz, age 64, formerly a resident of North Ridge Medical & Rehabilitation Center for many years, died on Monday, Sept. 17, 2001 at Hamilton Memorial Home, Two Rivers. Funeral Services will be held at 11 am Thursday, Sept. 20, 2001 at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Reifs Mills. The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Msrg. Alfred A. Schneider with burial in St. Augustine Cemetery. Allen was born Oct. 10, 1936 in the Town of Kossuth, Manitowoc County, son of the late Frank and Emma Oswald Havlovitz. CHARLES HAVLOVITZ Charles Halovitz, 64, of Rt. 1, Whitelaw, died Sunday evening following an apparent heart attack. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Saur Funeral Home, Kellnersville; and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Reif Mills. The Rev. John Haen will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Havlovitz was born Sept. 12, 1905, in the Town of Kossuth, son of the late Matt and Elizabeth Shebesta Havlovitz. He married Ludmilla Rameker May 14, 1941, at Kellnersville. They farmed in the Town of Kossuth and Mr. Havlovitz was also employed at the Eastman Division of Imperial Eastman, Manitowoc, for eight years. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of the church. Survivors include his wife; a daughter, and a son, Kenneth, at home; and two brothers, Frank and John of Rt. 1, Whitelaw. A brother and two sisters preceded him in death. ELIZABETH HAVLOVITZ Mrs. Elizabeth Havlovitz, 88, of Reifs Mills died late Saturday night at the home of her son, Jospeph, following an illness of four months. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Saur Funeral Home in Kellnersville and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church in Reifs Mills with the Rev. Joseph Rauch officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. The former Elizabeth Shebesta was born Nov. 18, 1866, in the Town of Franklin, daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Shebesta. In 1886 she was married to Matthew Havlovitz and the couple settled on the Havlovitz homestead farm in the Town of Kossuth which they operated until their retirement in 1917. Eleven years ago they made their home with their son, Joseph. Mr. Havlovitz preceded his wife in death seven years ago. Mrs. Havlovitz was a member of the Altar Society of the St. Augustine Catholic Church in Reifs Mills. She is survived by four sons, Joseph, Frank, John and Charles of Reifs Mills; two brothers, Michael Shebesta of Menchalville and Wencel Shebesta of Chippewa Falls; a step-brother, Antone Nechvatal of Chippewa Falls; a sister, Mrs. Katherine Tisler of Manitowoc; and 17 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren. Two daughters, Mrs. Mary Yohanek and Mrs. Louis Kortnek Sr., preceded their mother in death. CAROLINA HERMANN BRANCH WOMAN CLAIMED BY DEATH YESTERDAY HAD ATTAINED AGE OF 96 YRS. OLD RESIDENT OF COUNTY Mrs. Lucius Hermann, a pioneer resident of the county and who had attained the ripe old age of 96 years, within four years of a century, died at the home of her daughter at Branch yesterday. The funeral will be held tomorrow at ten with burial at Reif’s Mills. Mrs. Hermann was one of the oldest residents of the county and despite her advanced age, enjoyed excellent health up to a short time ago. On the occasion of her 96th birthday recently she welcomed relatives and friends who came to tender congratulations. LENA HERRMANN Mrs. John Herrmann, 87, formerly of Francis Creek and of St. Mary Home, Manitowoc, where she had resided four years, died Sunday evening at Two Rivers Municipal Hospital. Mrs. Herrmann, nee Lena Andres, was born May 27, 1884, in the Town of Franklin, daughter of the late Jacob and Elizabeth Nicolai Andres. She was married to John Herrmann Nov. 27, 1906. The couple farmed at Reif Mills until Mr. Herrmann's death July 17, 1950, when she came to Francis Creek and resided there the past 18 years. JOSEF AND ELIZABETH MATEJOVETZ HUSBAND FOLLOWS WIFE IN DEATH JUST THREE WEEKS TO DAY OF HER DEMISE—BOTH 83 Death came to Joseph Natovitz, pioneer resident of the county, just three weeks to the day after the Grim Destroyer had claimed his wife, companion of half a century, the funeral of Mr. Natovitz being held Saturday at Reif’s Mills. Mrs. Natovitz died three weeks ago last Thursday and the shock prostrated the aged husband whose decline was rapid until death came to him Thursday last. Both Mr. Matovitz and his wife were 83 years of age and for years made their home in the town of Kossuth. Mr. Matovitz, at the time of his last illness made his home with his daughter, Mrs. John Peterik, in this city. He is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Peterik, Mrs. John Cizek and Mrs. Wm. Kukel. JOSEPH NAIDL Joseph Naidl, 87, of route 1, Whitelaw, county resident for over 85 years, died Sunday night at the Holy Family hospital. Funeral services will be held at 9:15 a.m. Wednesday at the Urbanek and Schlei funeral home and at 10 o'clock at the St. Augstine's Catholic church, Reifs Mills, the Rev. Joseph Rauch officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. He was born in Bohemia in 1860 and when a child accompanied his parents to this county. They located on a farm in Franklin. In 1886 he married Miss Mary Svatek, and they located on a farm north of Whitelaw. Mrs. Naidl died 17 years ago. SHIRLEY OSWALD Mrs. Vernon (Shirley M.) Oswald, age 67, of 6925 Madson Road, Whitelaw, died on Monday morning, Dec. 3, 2007, at Aurora Medical Center of Manitowoc County. Shirley was born on Dec. 24, 1939, in the town of Franklin, daughter of the late George and Marion (Kostechka) Naidl. She graduated from Reedsville High School in 1957. On July 18, 1959, Shirley married Vernon G. Oswald at St. Anne Catholic Church, Francis Creek. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, and St. Mary's Altar Society of St. Augustine. She was a member and past treasurer of Inland Snowblazers, enjoyed flower gardening, traveling to Oneida casino, and an excellent all around homemaker. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) She was preceded in death by a brother: Robert Naidl; sister-in-law: Lily Ann Naidl; brother-in-law: John Bergquist; and brother-in-law and sister-in-law: Milton (Rose) Oswald. HARRY PEKARSKE Harry Pekarske, 72, of Rt. 1, Whitelaw, died Tuesday afternoon at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday at Saur Funeral Home, Kellnersville, and at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Reif Mills. The Rev. John Haen will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Pekarske was born Nov. 20, 1898, at Chicago, son of the late John and Mary Bonin Pekarske. He married Agnes Rybicke June 24, 1919, at Pulaski. The couple operated Pekarske's Grocery Store in Manitowoc for about eight years. In 1931 they moved to their present farm home in the Town of Kossuth. Mr. Pekarske had been employed as a crane operator at Manitowoc Shipbuilding Inc. for 17 years. He was a member and former secretary of St. Augustine Parish. Survivors include his wife, a son, Eugene of Riverside, Calif., two daughters, Mrs. John (Geraldine) Dugan of Rt. 1, Cato, and Mrs. Leon (Carol) Mecha of Rt. 1, Whitelaw, a brother, John of Manitowoc, two sisters, Mrs. Ward Valentine of Manitowoc and Mrs. Martin Kwitek of Rt. 1, Cato, 10 grandchildren and a great grandchild. NICKOLAUS REIF From Der Nord Westen, 16 Dec. 1897: Death on Wed. last week of Nic Reif, well known resident of our county, at age 81 yrs. 8 mos. The deceased was born 03 Apr. 1816 in the Rhineland and came to America in 1852, settling in Town Kossuth where he has lived ever since. However, last year he moved in with his son-in-law Frank Braunreuter in Kossuth, in whose house he died. He is survived by 4 grown children, his wife having predeceased him 12 yrs. ago. The burial took place Sat. morning at the cemetery in Kossuth.


PETER REIF From Der Nord Westen, 06 Apr. 1893: Death of Peter Reif in Town Kossuth last Sat. after a long illness with consumption. He reached the age of 38 yrs. 9 mos., leaving a widow and 6 small children. The burial took place Tues. at the Catholic Cemetery in Kossuth. JOHN SEIBEL John Seibel Sr., 73, resident of the village of Whitelaw for the last 12 years and a farmer in the Town of Kossuth for many years, died Thursday night at 10 o’clock. He was in failing health for the last two months, his illness dating back to injuries sustained when he was struck by an automobile while crossing a street in Manitowoc. Mr. Seibel was born in the Town of Kossuth March 15, 1864. At the age of four his family moved to the farm which he operated up to his retirement 12 years ago. Tills and Mrs. Frank Smejkal, all of this city, and Mrs. Dan Lensmire of Cato; three sons, John Jr., of Luxemburg, August of Long Beach, Calif., and Arthur of the Town of Two Rivers; one sister, Mrs. Theodore Bruening, Oconto Falls; 37 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. The body will lie in state at the Pfeffer Funeral Home from seven o’clock Saturday night until the hour of the funeral. MARY SEIBEL Mrs. John Seibel, 67, died at her home in Whitelaw Saturday at 5:35 pm. She suffered a stroke Friday evening at the home of a neighbor where she was a visitor. The funeral will be held Tuesday at 9am from the residence and at 10 o’clock at the Reif’s Mills Catholic church. Burial will be in the adjoining cemetery. Mrs. Seibel, who before her marriage was Mary Neuser, was born Dec. 24, 1865, in the town of Two Rivers. She was married April 14, 1885. The couple had resided at Whitelaw since 1925. ADOLPH SPERL Adolph Sperl, 75, of Rt. 1, Cato, died Thursday morning at Memorial Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Saur Funeral Home, Kellnersville. The Rev. John Haen will officiate and burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery, Reifs Mills, with graveside military rites by the Cato Veterans of Foreign Wars. Mr. Sperl was born Sept. 1, 1894, in Town of Kossuth, son of the late Wenzel and Katherine Kirt Sperl. He was a sheet metal worker all his life. For the past 10 years he made his home with Mr. and Mrs. Norman Kiel. He was a member of World War I Veterans, serving from Sept. 21, 1917, until Apr. 25, 1919. He was also a member of the Kubale-O'Connell Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 6179 of Cato and the World War I barracks No. 2565 of Manitowoc. Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Frances Baumann, of Manitowoc, Miss Tillie Sperl, of Omaha, Neb., and Mrs. Julia King, of Delaware. A brother and a sister preceded him in death. BARBARA STEEBER Mrs. John Steeber, 70, of Rt. 1, Whitelaw, died Saturday evening at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, where she had been a patient two weeks. Funeral services will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday at Saur Funeral Home, Kellnersville, and at 10 a.m. at St. Augustine Catholic Church, Reif Mills. The Rev. The former Barbara Milbauer was born Sept. 27, 1889, in the Town of Kossuth, Manitowoc County, daughter of the late George and Lena Hruska Milbauer. She was married to John Steeber June 6, 1916, at Kellnersville, and the couple settled on a farm in the Town of Franklin, Manitowoc County. Mrs. Steeber was a member of the Alter Society of St. Augustine Church. Survivors include the husband, two sons, a daughter, a brother, Frank of Kellnersville; a sister, Mrs. John Swoboda of Manitowoc, and nine grand- children. PETER THEISEN (d. 1917) DEATH CLAIMS AGED KOSSUTH PIONEER, AGED 79 Peter Theisen, Father of Leo Theisen, this City, Passes Away Peter Theisen, pioneer resident of Kossuth, for years engaged in farming, is dead at his home there at age of 79 years. Mr. Thiesen’s death occurred yesterday, following an illness of several weeks. Mr. Thiesen was born in Germany, March 27, 1838, and came to Manitowoc county at the age of 17 years and has since made his home here. Decedent is survived by his widow and eight children, twenty grandchildren and four great grandchildren. The children are Charles of Antigo, John of Rockwood, Anton of Branch, Mrs. M. Degenhardt of St. Louis, Mrs. D. McCormick of Sterling, Ill.; Lee, this city; Thomas, Reifs Mills and William of Milwaukee. CLARA VRANEY Clara Vraney, age 90, formerly of 8816 Reifs Mills Road, Whitelaw, and currently of River Wood Estates Assisted Living, Manitowoc, died on Tuesday night, Dec. 4, 2007, surrounded by her family, at her residence. Clara was born on Jan. 1, 1917, in Cooperstown, daughter of the late Frank and Josephine (Mudroch) Kolarik. On Nov. 27, 1940, she married Joseph V. Vraney at Holy Trinity Catholic Church in New Denmark. He preceded her in death on April 9, 2007. She was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and the Christian Mothers. Clara enjoyed flower and vegetable gardening, baking Bohemian treats, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. (Survivors omitted for privacy.) DONALD F. WILHELM Donald F. Wilhelm, age 76, of 502 Winchester Road, Carlsbad, N.M., died on Thursday Jan. 31, 2008, at the Carlsbad Medical Center in Carlsbad, N.M. Donald was born on June 1, 1931, in Oshkosh, son of the late Frank and Frances (Buresh) Wilhelm. He grew up on a farm near Maple Grove and attended local schools. On May 7, 1953, Don was married to the former Dolores Lakatos at St. Anne Catholic Church in Francis Creek. Don was a projectionist at the local Manitowoc movie theaters for more than 35 years. Don and Dolores farmed, and after the death of their son, David, the couple moved to Polifka Corners, until moving to Carlsbad, N.M., in 1991. Don was a true farmer at heart. On their little farm in Carlsbad, N.M., Don and Dolores always had a beloved dog, Willy, who died in 2005, and now have Teddy, who was Don's best buddy. His miniature horse, Mocha, will miss him too. He will be truly missed by his wife, daughter, and the rest of his loving family in Wisconsin. Don will also be missed by his friends in Carlsbad, N.M., at the senior center, where he shot pool with them and played cards. (Survivors omitted for privacy.)
