December 1, 1971 FRIEDRICH AMMERMANN From Der Nord Westen, 09 July 1891: Friedrich Ammermann, a mentally disturbed old man, has been missing from his home in Neshoto, Town Kossuth, since last Dec. His body was found last Sat. only 40 rods from his house, a couple of feet off the path that is used for fetching the cows every day, but no one had even noticed the body. Amazingly, the wild animals had not bothered the corpse.
MRS. FR. AMMERMANN From Der Nord Westen, Dec 17, 1891: Death in town Kossuth last Fri. of 62 yr. old Mrs. Fr. Ammermann. About a year ago her mentally disturbed husband disappeared from the house and was later found dead in some undergrowth. She is survived by several grown children, of whom 3 are married. RAYMOND ARKENS Raymond (Ray) Arkens, 73, of Rockwood, Rt. 4, Manitowoc, died Thursday afternoon at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at Saur Funeral Home, Kellnersville, and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anne Catholic Church, Francis Creek. The Rev. John Haen will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Mr. Arkens was born Aug. 17, 1898, at Lena, Wis., son of the late Theodore and Sarah Pirlet Arkens. He married Claire Daoust Dec. 9, 1919, at Seymour. The couple resided at Green Bay until 1933 when they moved to Klondike where they operated a tavern until 1950. Later they operated Arkens Green Lake Resort at Mountain, Wis., until 1968 when they retired and moved to Rockwood. Mr. Arkens was a carpenter by trade. He served in the Navy in World War I and was a member of the V.F.W. Post at Mountain. He was also a member of the Mountain, Klondike and Francis Creek sportsmans' clubs. Survivors include his wife, a son, M.J. (Bud) Arkens of Francis Creek, two daughters, Mrs. Marty (June) Katzka and Mrs. Kenneth (Janet) Weger of Francis Creek, two sisters, Mrs. Con (Katherine) Gauthier of Oconto Falls and Mrs. Daniel (Helen) Mathys of Rt. 1, Green Bay, 11 grandchildren and 12 great grand- children. JOSEPH AUGUSTIN FRANCIS CREEK PIONEER DIES AT AGE OF 80 Joseph Augustine, pioneer settler of the county and one of its old residents is dead at his home at Francis Creek aged 80 years. Mr. Augustine was 80 years old on May 29 and had spent a large portion of his life in this county. Besides an aged wife, decedent is survived by nine children, fifty four grandchildren and ten great grandchildren. The funeral will be held at Francis Creek Monday morning at 10 o'clock. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Saturday, August 28, 1915, Page 5 ******** According to the information I have, Joseph Anthony Augustin was born in Stachesried, Bavaria, Germany on May 29, 1836 (not June, as stated on the stone) and died in Kossuth on August 27, 1915. He married Barbara (nee) Bredl on June 27, 1860 in Francis Creek. Barbara was born in Bohemia, Chezh Republic on May 31, 1835 and died March 17, 1917 in Manitowoc. Joseph emigrated to the United States aboard the "Argo" and entered through the port of Buffalo, New York. He came with his father, Peter Augustin; his mother, Barbara Augustin (nee) Preu and four siblings. Joseph became a US citizen on June 3, 1878. I do not know when Barbara came to the US. PETER AUGUSTIN From Der Nord Westen, 29 Oct. 1891: A terrible accident occurred Mon. morning in Town Kossuth. Peter Augustin, a son of farmer Joseph Augustin, was busy hauling fertilizer across the fields and for some reason the horses shied and ran away. The young driver was thrown from the wagon and was dragged by the frightened horses. He ended up near the district schoolhouse and when found by the teacher and the children, he was still living but unable to talk. He was carried to the home of his parents where he shortly died from his injuries. He was buried yesterday in the Catholic Cemetery in Francis Creek. The unfortunate man had been born in Town Kossuth and was not quite 22 yrs. old.
PETER AUGUSTIN From Der Nord Westen, 21 Dec. 1899: Death from old age late Sat. night of Peter Augustin at the home of his son. He was a long-time respected resident of Town Kossuth. He was born in Germany in 1807, came to America in 1854, and settled in Town Kossuth where he has lived ever since. Sat. evening he went quietly to bed and was found dead there next morning. He leaves two sons, his wife having predeceased him in 1890. The funeral was held yesterday in Francis Creek.
EDWARD AUGUSTINE TYPHOID TAKES LIFE OF YOUTH AT FRANCIS CRK. Typhoid fever, which developed from an illness three weeks ago, caused the death yesterday afternoon of Edward Augustine, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Augustine of Kossuth, his demise coming as a great shock to family and friends. He was 25 years of age, having been born October 10, 1904 and had always made his home in this county. Besides his parents, seven brothers and four sisters survive, being Mrs. Joseph Grall of Marshfield, Anna, Manitowoc, Hilda and Helen at home, John and Joseph, Milwaukee, Martin, Andrew, Paul, Michael and Frank at Kossuth. ANTHONY BALZANI Anthony Balzan, 80, of Rockwood, died Friday at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. MATTHIAS BIRRINGER Mathias G. Birringer, 81, formerly of Rt. 2, Two Rivers, died Sunday at Hamilton Memorial Home, Two Rivers, following a brief illness. Mr. Birringer was born July 12, 1889, in the Town of Kossuth, Manitowoc County, son of the late Nicholas and Anna Orth Birringer. He married Mary Nachtwey May 28, 1912, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, Pine Grove. The couple farmed in the Town of Kossuth. Mr. Birringer served as a former trustee of St. Ann church. His wife preceded him in death Jan. 3, 1965. He resided at the Yindra boarding home at Francis Creek the past five years. Survivors include five sons, Erwin of Rt. 1, Manitowoc, Sylvester and William of Manitowoc, Norman of Milwaukee and Father Raphael of St. Pius Parish, Wauwatosa; a daughter, Mrs. Raymond (Evelyn) Lemberger, of Manitowoc; two brothers. Frank Blimel, a pioneer settler of the county whose death occurred at Francis Creek, was buried today. He was 84 years old and the father of Mrs. C. Hessel of that place. Several children survive. MARY BLIMEL MRS. BLIMEL 93 AT DEATH Francis Creek Pioneer To Be Buried On Saturday Mrs. Mary Blimel, Francis Creek, widow of the late Frank Blimel Sr., died Tuesday. She was 93. Since the death of her husband Mrs. Blimel had been making her residence on the homestead farm now operated by her son Frank Jr. Infirmities of old age was the cause of her death. Funeral services will be held Saturday at 9:30 a.m. from the home and at 10 a.m. from the St. Ann's Catholic church in Francis Creek with interment in the adjoining cemetery. Born Mary Pankratz in Germany 93 years ago, the deceased came to America with her parents at the age of 14. The family settled in the town of Kossuth. There 73 years ago she married Frank Blimel and they took up their home on the present homestead farm, now operated by the only son. The husband died 19 years ago. Survivors are the son Frank Jr., a daughter Mrs. Frank Hessel of Francis Creek, 17 grand children and 30 great grandchildren. CARL BOLLE From Der Nord Westen, 19 Mar. 1891: Death in Town Kossuth on Sat. afternoon of Carl Bolle at the age of 74 yrs. 8 days. He was one of the oldest residents of Kossuth where he has lived for the past 43 yrs. Old age weakness was the cause of death. The funeral took place on Tues morning in the Catholic Cemetery in Francis Creek.
DALE J. BOLLE Dale J. Bolle, age 84, formerly of 10018 Reifs Mills Road, Whitelaw, died from Parkinson's disease on Wednesday afternoon, Dec. 12, 2007, at Harmony Assisted Living of Manitowoc. Dale was born on June 12, 1923, in the town of Kossuth, son of the late Charles and Lydia (Benishek) Bolle. He was a 1941 graduate of Lincoln High School, Manitowoc. Dale was a U.S. Army veteran, serving two active duties, and was a member of the U.S. Army Reserves. His 26-year career began on Feb. 25, 1943, with the 44th Army Division in Europe during World War II, until Nov. 7, 1945, and also served in Korea from Jan. 17, 1951, until June 10, 1952. He retired from the U.S. Army Reserves in 1967, as a captain. He earned many military medals, including the Purple Heart after being wounded in World War II, and received the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Cluster. On Nov. 19, 1946, Dale was married to the former Ethelyn Junk at Holy Innocents Catholic Church by the Rev. E.A. Radey. The couple celebrated 61 years of marriage. Dale was the owner of Bolle Trucking Company for more than 30 years. His government career included being a member of the Manitowoc County Board from 1970 to 1980, of which he was county board chairman from 1976 to 1978. In 1982, Dale was elected to the Wisconsin State Assembly, and served for 12 years, retiring from the Assembly in 1994. He was chairman for 10 years of the Veterans and Military Affairs Committee, and in the past, served as chairman of the Wisconsin Counties Utility Tax Association, and was a director of the Wisconsin County Boards Association. He was a member of St. Augustine Catholic Church, Reifs Mills, the Reserved Officer Association, American Legion Gosz-Novak Post 199 of Reedsville, Kubale-O'Connell VFW Post 6179 of Kellnersville, the Disabled American Veterans, and the Old Timers Baseball League. He was preceded in death by a daughter-in-law: Mary Sue Bolle; five brothers: Everett, Berlin, Francis, Carl and Robert; one sister: Virginia Swetlik; two sisters-in-law: Dorothy Bolle and Ruth Bolle; and one brother-in-law: Ummy Walesh. The deceased was born in Westphalia in 1834 and came to America with her husband in 1854. The couple operated a farm in Town Kossuth where they faced all the hardships of pioneer life. In 1894 they retired to Manitowoc. In addition to her husband the deceased is survived by 8 children. Her body was taken to Francis Creek and laid to rest at the cemetery there yesterday morning.

IDA BROCKHOFF Mrs. Joseph Brockhoff, 66, of route 5, Manitowoc, died Sunday evening after a six months illness. Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 9 a.m., from the home in the town of Kossuth and at 9:30 from the St. Ann church at Francis Creek. Interment will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Brockhoff, nee Ida Hessel, was born in Kossuth in 1873 and in 1894 was married to Brockhoff. They located on a farm in Kossuth, now operated by her son, Eugene. Mr. Brockhoff died in 1930. Survivors are two sons, Paul of route 6, Manitowoc, and Eugene on the homestead; two brothers, Robert of Francis Creek, Charles, city; sister, Mrs. John Steinbrecker of Francis Creek; nine grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. JOHANN MATHIAS BRUDER DEATH CLAIMS JOHN M. BRUDER, IRON BRIGADE VETERAN AND RESIDENT OF COUNTY FOR 68 YEARS Pioneer Settler of Kossuth Who Had Made Home in City 19 Years, Dies After Illness of But Few Days John M. Bruder, civil war veteran, who served with the famous Iron Brigade of which the late Gen. E.S. Bragg was commander, and a resident of Manitowoc county for sixty-eight years, died at his home, 928 South Ninth street, early today, aged 80 years. Mr. Bruder's death was due to infirmities incident to age, and followed an illness of few days duration which he was unable to combat. A native of Germany, Mr. Bruder was born Nov. 23, 1834, and when 12 years old came to Manitowoc county with his parents, locating in the town of Kossuth which was his home up to nineteen years ago when he removed to the city. During the war of the rebellion Mr. Bruder served with Company D, Sixth Wisconsin, attached to the Iron Brigade and later re-enlisted and served with Company C, 34th Wisconsin regiment. Mr. Bruder was an active member of the G.A.R. He is survived by six children, two residents of this city, John Bruder and Mrs. Henry Grobe. Other children are Nicolas of Sheboygan, Mrs. Frank Hawes of Kossuth, Mrs. Katie Schrimpf of Sheboygan, and Matthias of St. Louis. The couple moved to the United States in 1946 and resided at Rockwood. Mr. Carollo was employed at the Rockwood Lime Co. for 47 years retiring in 1970. He served in the U.S. Armed Forces. Mr. Carollo was a member of St. Ann Church, Francis Creek. Survivors include his wife, two sons and a daughter; two brothers, Giovanni and Nicola of Italy, and a sister, Mrs. Marie Duzo of Italy. ARTHUR COREY Arthur E. Corey, 74, a former army major, of Rt. 2, Manitowoc, died late Wednesday evening at Memorial Hospital, Manitowoc. He married Helen Neuser Jan. 11, 1921, at Chicago. Mrs. Neuser is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Frank Neuser Sr., of Francis Creek. Mr. Corey attended the University of Minnesota. He served in the United States Army during World War I and World War II and was discharged with the rank of major in 1952. He had been employed by the Post Office Dept. at Chicago, retiring in 1965, coming to Manitowoc County six months ago. THEODORE (TED) L. DELLSMAN Theodore (Ted) L. Dellsman, 73, former insurance underwriter and realtor, died Friday morning at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Mr. Dellsman, who resided at St. Mary Home, Manitowoc, had been in ill health for several years. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Monday at Mittnacht Funeral Home, Manitowoc, and at 9:30 a.m. at Holy Innocents Catholic Church. The Rev. E.A. Radey will officiate and burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Francis Creek. Mr. Dellsman, son of the late Bernard and Mary Kries Dellsman, was born Nov. 10, 1886, in the Town of Kossuth. He attended Francis Creek and Rockwood schools and took the University of Wisconsin Extension Division short course in agriculture. As a young man he operated the Dellsman homestead farm, located near Rockwood, until 1924, and was then briefly employed by Lindstedt Hoffman Co., Manitowoc. He later conducted his own real estate and insurance agency in Manitowoc Saving Bank Building and more recently was associated with the Ben Fronk Agency. He married Rose Hessel in 1913. Mr. Dellsman was a member of the Holy Name Society of Holy Innocents Church and a third and fourth degree Knight of Columbus. Surviving are a brother, Bruno of San Clemente, Calif.; four sisters, Mrs. Charles Spengeman of San Marco, Calif., Mrs. George Wil?ert of Two Rivers and Mrs. John Prsha and Mrs. Fred Pha?r of Los Angeles; and a number of nieces and nephews. LEO DELSMANN The angel of death called at the home of Bernard Delsman(sic) and took from them their twenty-one-year-old son, Leo. Leo Delsman was born in 1890, attended the parochial school here until he was twelve years old and after that the public school during a few winters. At the age of eighteen he left home and went to Mount Vernon, Ill., to help his grandfather, Mr. Peter Greece, on the farm. After he had been in Mount Vernon about a year he began to complain of pain in the side of his leg, a little below the hip joint. Nothing was thot (sic) of this at first until it became serious and he was no longer able to leave the house. Hearing this, the parents were greatly shocked and Mr. Delsman set out at once to bring his sick son back. At Manitowoc the doctors who attended the boy said that he had tuberculosis of the bone and that he was already too weak to be operated. This was a year ago last December. He was given up by the doctors and was taken home where death was expected in a month or two. Spring came, then summer, then autumn and winter passed away and still the sufferer lingered. Last fall he was taken to Green Bay where another attempt was made to affect a cure, but all in vain, and he was again taken home to die. A large circle of friends, by all of whom he was beloved, mourn his untimely death. The funeral will be held Monday with interment in the Catholic cemetery at Francis Creek. MARGARET DELSMANN Mrs. Frank Delsmann, 85, of Francis Creek, died early Saturday morning. She had been in ill health several days. She was married to Frank Delsmann Nov. 12, 1895, and the couple operated a farm in the Town of Kossuth. Mr. Delsmann died in 1952. JOHN EWEN A requiem high mass will be sung by the Rev. Joseph Rauch in St. Ann's Catholic church at Francis Creek at 10 o'clock Thursday morning for John Ewen, 75, prominent in county and town of Kossuth activities, who died Monday from complications. The body was removed to the home in Francis Creek this morning from the Pfeffer funeral parlors. Brief rites at 9:45 a.m. Thursday at the home will precede the church service. Interment will be made in the church cemetery. Mr. Ewen was a native of the town of Kossuth, having been born on June 28, 1870. Former chairman of the Manitowoc county board, which post he held for five years, Mr. Ewen also represented the township on the board for a span of 18 years. Until ill health forced his retirement last year he was president of the State Bank of Francis Creek since its organization, and was still a member of the board of directors. In addition he was clerk of school district 4 for nine years and a trustee of the Manitowoc County Asylum board for 12 years. Mr. Ewen and his wife, the former Mary Kerscher, observed the golden anniversary of their marriage in June, 1945. They were united at St. Ann's church Francis Creek. Mr. Ewen served the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin, as its secretary since 1925, and is also a Holy Name member. Both groups will assemble in St. Ann's church at 8 p.m. today to recite the rosary for their departed brother. Survivors besides the wife are a daughter, Rose, who lives at home; two sons, Edwin of Manitowoc and William of Francis Creek. There are seven grandchildren. She had 12 children of which 10 predeceased her, one of the last being Quirin Ewen.
MATHIAS EWEN DEATH OF MATHIAS EWEN REMOVES PIONEER FARMER OF TOWN OF FRANCIS CREEK Death of Mathias Ewen, father of John Ewen, chairman of the Manitowoc County board of supervisors, occurred this morning at the home of his son at Francis Creek. The funeral will be held on Friday at 10 am from St. Anne’s church at Francis Creek, of which decedent has been a life long member. Decedent is survived by one son, John, three grandchildren, Rose, Edwin, William Even and one sister, Mrs. Margaret Prochaszka, of this city. His wife died twenty six years ago. Mathias Ewen was born in Gaualgesheim, Germany on October 19, 1838 and came here in 1847, taking up his home on a farm at Francis Creek where he has resided continuously until his death. He was wedded at Francis Creek where the family was reared. Decedent belonged to that sturdy type of pioneers who have made Manitowoc early history so prominent. He was not found wanting when war broke out, enlisting in the 45th Wisconsin Volunteer infantry in 1864 and served with honor and distinction until the end of the war. He returned to the farm which he converted into a splendid property, now occupied by his son John, with whom he lived up to his death. Many friends of the family will voice sincere regret at news of the demise. He was well known not only in the community where he resided but in this city as well. PAUL GOSZ Paul Gosz, 75, of Reedsville, died Friday morning at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, following a brief illness. Funeral services will be at 9:45 a.m. Monday at Reedsville Funeral Home and at 10 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Reedsville. The Rev. William Koutnik will officiate and burial will be in St. Ann Cemetery, Francis Creek. Mr. Gosz was born April 21, 1884, at High Cliff, Calumet County, son of the late George and Christine Voisson Gosz. He married the former Anna Rank Nov. 24, 1884(sic), in the Town of Morrison, Brown County. Mr. Gosz was superintendent of Allwood Land Co. of Rockwood for 35 years. The couple moved to Wabeno in 1946 where it operated a tavern and summer resort at Robert's Lake and then moved to Reedsville in 1956. He started the Paul Gosz & Son Orchestra in 1921 and operated it until 1928 when a son, Romy took it over. Being active in basketball and baseball, Mr. Gosz formed his own basketball team composed of himself and four sons. He was a member of the Holy Name Society of St. Mary Church and was justice of the peace for the Village of Reedsville. A son, Joseph, preceded him in death. CLARA A. HERRMANN Mrs. Louis B. Herrmann, 85, formerly of 412A N. Lake St., Manitowoc, died early Tuesday at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, aftr a four-month illness. Funeral services will be at 9:45 a.m. Thursday at Mittnacht Funeral Home, Manitowoc, and at 10:30 a.m. at St. Ann Catholic Church, Francis Creek. The Rev. John Haen will officiate and burial will be in the church cemetery. Mrs. Herrmann, nee Clara Ellerman, was born March 14, 1885, at Whitelaw, the daughter of the late Fred and Theresa Simmet Ellermann. She attended St. Michael School at Whitelaw. On September 24, 1907 she was married to Louis M. Herrmann at St. Michael Church. The couple operated a farm in the Town of Kossuth, Manitowoc County, until retiring and moving to Manitowoc in 1962. They made their home at 412A N. Lake St. until moving to St. Mary Home, Manitowoc, several years ago. Mrs. Herrmann was a member of St. Ann Christian Mothers Altar Society of Francis Creek. The couple celebrated its golden anniversay in 1957. He preceded her in death in 1967. Survivors include two sons, Ervin of Manitowoc and Fred of Kossuth, four daughters, Mrs. Wilbur (Leona) Newman of Manitowoc, Mrs. Max (Martha) Boehm of Rt. 4, Manitowoc, Mrs. Allen (Agnes) Degeneffe of Milwaukee, and Mrs. Gerald (Violet) Panosh of Manitowoc, two sisters, Mrs. Anna Augustin of Port Washington and Mrs. Robert E. McCabe of St. Paul, Minn.; 20 grandchildren. A son, Paul, three brothers and five sisters preceded her in death. CHARLES J. HESSEL C.J. Hessel, 77, of Francis Creek died shortly before 1 p.m. Saturday at his home. He had been ailing for the past three years. Funeral arrangements are incomplete and will be announced Monday by the Saur Funeral Home, Kellnersville. Mr. Hessel was born March 26, 1882, son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Charles Hessel Sr. of Francis Creek. He lived in the village all his life. He graduated from University of Wisconsin Short Course in 1902 and went into business in the village in 1905, opening the Hessel restaurant and bowling alleys. His chicken dinners, family style, became known throughout Wisconsin and he remained in business 52 years, retiring two years ago because of his health. He married the former Laura Kassa of Centerville in 1906. Two years ago he retired as postmaster, a job he had filled for more than 40 years. He was a director of the State Bank of Francis Creek for 25 years, member of the Knights of Columbus, of the Manitowoc Elks Lodge and the Manitowoc Chamber of Commerce. Survivors include his wife; daughter, Mrs. Larry Axel of Francis Creek; two sons, Paul of Two Rivers and Richard of North Fond du Lac; brother, Reinhart of Manitowoc; sister Miss Theresa of Francis Creek; 10 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. THERESIA HESSEL From Der Nord Westen, 06 Sep. 1906: Mrs. Hessel, widow of the late Casper Hessel, died Thursday last week in the residence of her son Charles Hessel in Francis Creek. The deceased reached an age of over 75 years and had lived in Town Kossuth for many years where she enjoyed a fine reputation. Her death resulted from old age debility. She is survived by 4 sons and 4 daughters among whom is Mrs. P. Korneli here. The funeral was held Saturday.
JOSEPH HUTTERER (d. 1910) Joseph Huttern (sic), an aged pioneer, passed away at his home here Friday morning at the age of 93 years. Death was due to the infirmities of old age. Deceased was one of the first to settle in this vicinity and was one of the few pioneers that we had left us. He was the father of five children, one son and four daughters. The son died many years ago. One of the daughters lives in Sheboygan and three live in Green Bay. The funeral will be held Tuesday with interment in the Catholic cemetery. RAYMOND HUTTERER Raymond Hutterer, 60, of Milwaukee, former Town of Kossuth resident, died Monday at Milwaukee County General Hospital, where he had been a patient since February. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Saur Funeral Home, Kellnersville. The Rev. John Haen will officiate and burial will be in St. Anne Cemetery, Francis Creek. Mr. Hutterer was born Jan. 20, 1910, in Town of Kossuth, son of the late John and Anna Goedert Hutterer. He had been employed at Wisconsin Aluminum Foundry, Manitowoc, for several years. The past 14 years he resided at Milwaukee. Survivors include five brothers, Joseph of Rt. 1, Whitelaw, Jerome of Rt. 4, Manitowoc, John and Clarence of Rt. 2, Manitowoc, and Paul of Branch; and nieces and nephews.
