Trier-Ehrang, 4 April 75 Mr. Thomas Koch 1315 E. Holmes St. Janesville, Wis. 53545 Dear Mr. Koch! Thank you very much for your correspondence of 3 March. I had been traveling for two weeks and found your letter when I returned yesterday. I shall answer it immediately. In my book “The America-Emigration From The Saarburg District” I have found recorded the emigrant Peter Koch, his wife Maria Staudt and the children with their birthdates. The family at that time was living in Wehr, and this place belongs to the parish of Palzem (not Peilzen). In my book it states: Continuing Number 778 The day-laborer Peter Koch, 47 years old, with his wife Maria Staudt, 40 years old, and the children Peter, born 29 Nov. 1841 Anna, born 5 May 1854 Johann, born 14 May 1844 Elisabeth, born 18 March 1856 Michael, born 20 Dec. 1848 Wilhelm, born 12 March 1858 Mathias, born 5 Oct. 1851 Johann, born 28 Sept. 1859 Heinrich, born 4 Sept. 1861 by way of (Le) Havre to North America. “so that he might secure his future through earnings from a farm”. 2 October 1862 3000 Talers That’s as far as the section from my book goes. Peter Koch had at his disposal over 3,000 Talers available cash, that is 9,000 Marks and that was for that time a small fortune. The high amount of available cash proves the Peter Koch had auctioned off all his property before his departure. The date 2 October 1862 is the date of the release document, preserved in the state archives in Koblenz. Koch also probably emigrated to the U.S.A. a short time later, but surely still in October. You now have the exact birthdates of the children of the Koch-Staudt marriage, and you also know the exact city of residence of the emigrant, namely Palzem. It would make me very happy, if, on a trip to Germany, you would visit us here. I have already welcomed many Americans in my home. Unfortunately I do not speak your language, and that is a disadvantage. But right across from me lives a woman who understands English, so an understanding will be possible. With the best greetings from the old homeland Mergen In the office of the Register of Deeds, Manitowoc County, WI, a warranty deed was registered on May 26, 1875, indicating the purchase of the Koch farm from Franz Stadler and his wife Dorothea for the value of $1200. CAROL KOCHAN CHILD KILLED, SEEK CAR DRIVER CAROL KOCHAN, 13, IS KILLED AT FRANCIS CREEK Girl Sustains Fractured Skull When Hit by Car of Vampire Driver; Dies Within an Hour A hit and run driver who fled from Francis Creek early last night after striking down and fatally injuring Carol, the 13-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ben Kochan of that village, is being saught by authorities of this and surrounding counties today. Only a meagre description of the car, said to be a large sedan, was furnished to the authorities by a young friend who was the only person in the vicinity at the time of the accident. Miss Kochan died at the home of her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Frank Hessel, at about 8 o'clock after living with a fractured skull for about an hour after the accident. She never regained consciousness following her being picked up at the side of the road. Saw Approaching Car Belief that the girl saw the oncoming, rapidly-driven car was expressed by her parents who said that the child was walking south on the east side of the highway when she was struck. She was en route to her home, about one-quarter of a mile south of the place where the accident occurred, and was planning to return to the St. Ann's school later to take part in a play given by students of the school there. The impact of the collision was heard by Marcella Blimel, her companion of the afternoon and who left the home of the parish priest, Rev. Joseph Rauch, with her after the two had assisted the housekeeper in making final preparations for the play in the evening. The Blimel girl was walking north toward the school and when she heard the noise of the collision she ran to the side of the victim. She fell and severely bruised her face and hands and then mainly tried to lift Miss Kochan. Finding herself unable to help or carry the girl, Miss Blimel hastened to the home of the priest and he with others removed the girl to her grandfather's home across the street. Car Never Halted Miss Blimel told Sheriff Carstens that the car had not halted after striking the Kochan child but continued on its way north. She was unable to state what type of car it was but said that it was a large close automobile traveling at a high rate of speed. The car did not swerve to the side of the road after hitting its victim and belief has been expressed that the driver was unaware that he had struck a pedestrian. Was Rockwood Student Miss Kochan recently graduated from the St. Ann's parochial school at Francis Creek and was a member of the freshman class of the high school, Rockwood. She was born in the town of Kossuth in September, 1918, and spent her entire life in the immediate vicinity. She was a popular girl and was active in church and school affairs, being a member of the Young Ladies Society of the St. Ann church. Besides her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Ben Kochan, she is survived by three sisters, Florence, Marion and Delores, all at home. Funeral Wednesday Funeral services will be held from the St. Ann church Wednesday morning at 10 o'clock with the Rev. Joseph Rauch officiating. Interment will take place at the church cemetery. To Hold Inquest Coroner W.G. Kemper announced at noon today that an inquest would be held at the court house here tomorrow afternoon at 3 o'clock. The corner's jury consisting of Jack McConnell, A.F. Rank, George Schadeburg Sr., Otto A. Vogel, Hugo Menzel and Raleigh Schmitz was drawn this morning and viewed the remains at the Pfeffer Funeral Home bfore adjouring until the time for the taking of testimony. She was the widow of Georg Korneli who died seven years ago. She was born 08 May 1821 in Gau Algersheim, Hessen-Darmstadt. With her husband and two children she came to American in 1853 and settled in Town Kossuth where she has lived ever since. She is also survived by her 4 daughters-in-law, 26 grandchildren and 1 great-grandchild. Burial will take place tomorrow morning in the St. Anna Cemetery in Francis Creek. ********* JACOB KORNELY (son of George and Theresa Kornely) Actuated by the progressive spirit which has been the dominant factor in the rapid and substantial upbuilding of the middle west, Jacob Kornely has steadily advanced in his business career until he is today a forceful factor in the commercial and financial circles of the city. He is at the head of a large hardware establishment and he is also the president of the Excelsior Mutual Building and Loan Association. Wisconsin numbers him among her native sons, his birth having occurred on a farm near Francis Creek, in Manitowoc county, September 12, 1858, his parents being George and Theresa (Presser) Kornely, who were natives of Germany and came to the United States in 1854, at which time they took up their abode in Manitowoc county, spending their remaining days upon the farm which they there purchased and developed. Jacob Kornely spent the period of his minority under the parental roof and during that time acquired his education in the district and parochial schools. He started out in the business world as a clerk in a hardware store in Milwaukee and was thus employed for a number of years, during which period, however he cherished the hope of ultimately engaging in business on his own account and bent his energies toward that end. At length his industry and economy had brought him sufficient capital to enable him to take the first step in that direction and in 1891 he opened a hardware store on Third street near the corner of North avenue. His place was a small store, but it enabled him to make the initial step and test his powers as a manager of a business. He soon proved that he was adequate to any demands made upon him and his trade steadily grew, so that his quarters were soon too small for his expanding business. Today he occupies a building thirty-five by one hundred and fifty feet and three stories in height, having one of the largest and best hardware establishments of Milwaukee. He carries everything that can be found in the line of shelf and heavy hardware and his business is now one of most gratifying proportions. He has won success by fair and honorable treatment of his patrons, by persistency of purpose and by close application - qualities which anyone might cultivate and which never fail to produce desired results. The business has been incorporated and is today carried on under the name of the J. Kornely Hardware Company, of which Mr. Kornely is the president. He is likewise the president of the Stove Dealers Supply Company, which was organized about eighteen years ago, and also a director of the Wisconsin Hardware Mutual Fire Insurance Company. Nor does this constitute the entire scope of his business activities, for he has become actively connected with the Excelsior Mutual Building and Loan Association, of which he is likewise the president. This association has entered upon the twelfth year of its existence under most favorable circumstances. It is capitalized for five million dollars and has fifty thousand shares of one hundred dollars each. It has in mortgage loans eight hundred and sixty-six thousand, nine hundred dollars. Its business has been most wisely managed and has constituted a source of great helpfulness to many shareholders and borrowers. In 1886, Mr. Kornely was married to Miss Theresa Metz, a daughter of William and Anna Metz of Milwaukee. They are now parents of five children: George W., who has a hardware store at No 1476 Green Bay avenue; Theresa, the wife of John Bendowske; Anna Laura, the wife of Peter Theis, who is vice president of the J. Kornely Hardware Company; and Raymond C., who acts as secretary and treasurer of the concern. The religious faith of the family is that of the Catholic church and Mr. Kornely is treasurer of the Branch No. 89 of the Catholic Knights of Wisconsin, of which he became a charter member at Milwaukee. He is also a member and the president of the St. Bonaventure Benevolent Society. In politics he maintains an independent course. In 1895 he purchased property and built his present store and today the structure stands as a monument to his enterprise and business ability. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Saturday, December 18, 1915, Page 3 ******** (No. 25. 1st publication April 28, 1916.) NOTICE Of Final Account and to Determine Inheritance Tax- Prescribed by Tax commission. COUNTY COURT, MANITOWOC COUNTY, WISCONSIN-IN PROBATE. In the matter of the estate of Katherine Pankratz, deceased. Notice is hereby given, That at a special term of the county court to be held in and for said county at the court house in the city of Manitowoc in said county on the fifth Tuesday (being the 30th day) of May, A.D., 1916, at the opening of court on that day the following matter will be heard and considered: The application of Charles Hessel, executor of the will of Katherine Pankratz, deceased, late of Kossuth in said county, for the examination and allowance of his final account, and for the assignment of the residue of the estate of said deceased to such persons as are by law entitled there to; and for the determination and ajudication of the inheritance tax if any, payable in said estate. Dated April 26, A.D., 1916. By the Court John Chloupek, County Judge. Emil Baensch, attorney. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Friday, April 28, 1916 P.5 ******** WILL ASK COURT TO AUTHORIZE A CONTEST ON WILL Petition to be Made in Cirucit Court for Contest on Will of Late Catherine Pankratz. Now Probated Attorneys have been retained and petition will be filed in circuit court by relatives asking permission to institute a contest on the will of the late Mrs. Catherine Pankratz, whose estate has practically been settled in probate court by probating of the will and administration. The petition, it is said, will be filed by Mrs. Barbar (sic) Kellner, a sister of the decedent and other heirs may join in the case. Mrs. Pankratz died two years ago, leaving an estate valued at $11,000. Mrs. Kellner received $100 and small bequests were made to other relatives, the bulk of the estate going to the children of Charles Hessel and M. Pankratz, the former a friend and the latter a brother of the decedent. Mr. Pankratz had made her home with the Hessel family previous to death. Hessel and Pankratz were named executors of the will but two weeks after will was filed, Mr. Pankratz died, and Mr. Hessel acted as administrator. No contest was raised on the will when it was presented for probate and the estate is now settled, the administrator having filed his final accounting. Because of this fact it will be necessary for the petitioners attacking the will to secure permission from circuit court in which court the matter will be taken up. Mrs. Pankratz was an eccentric woman and at one time was adjudged insame by Judge Chloupek in probate court. Later, upon a rehearing, Judge Paul Krez of Sheboygan held that she was sane and dismissed the petition. Representatives of the firm of Martin & Martin at Green Bay who have been retained in the contest are here to institute proceedings. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, May 1, 1916 P.6

EDWARD REIF DEATH’S SAD PATHOS Husband Visits Old Home to Bury Wife and Is Himself Called LITTLE ONE IS LEFT AN ORPHAN Edward Reif, Francis Creek Boy Who Resides at Coleman, Met his Death Friday—Circumstances Sadly dreaming over the poignant grief of life while speeding homeward to a hearthstone that had been robbed of its most precious setting; with the dull rattle of the whirling wheels sounding unheeded upon his ears; the wearied brain made insensate by the very intensity of its sorrow was granted the oblivion of death which came almost as a relief to the tried soul and ushered it into the unknown beyond there to meet in reunion the affinity whose further companionship had been denied to things earthly. Such was the pathetic close of the life of Edward Reif, a well known Francis Creek young man, announcement of whose death was received by relatives and friends here today. Seldom has death been attended by sadder circumstances than surround that of Edward Reif. Called upon less than a week ago to drink of the bitter dregs of sorrow in the death of his young wife, whose remains he had accompanied here Tuesday for burial, he was himself summoned by the destroyer while enroute on his return to the home at Coleman, Wis., and the remains are now to be interred beside those of his loved and lost one in the cemetery at Branch. The telegram conveying the sad news was received at Francis Creek this morning and was a terrible shock to relatives and friends. Reif, who had remained for a visit with friends in Kossuth after the sad mission attending the occasion on his return, left Friday for Coleman gave few particulars as to the manner of the death of Reif stating simply that he had been killed; presumably by falling from the moving train or by being run down. Immediately upon the receipt of the news of his death, relatives completed arrangements for bringing the body to Manitowoc county for burial and it is expected to arrive at Branch at 5 o’clock this evening. Edward Reif was the son of Mathias Reif and was born and raised at Francis Creek where he continued to reside until a short time ago. He was well known in this city and during the years that he made Manitowoc county his home had been engaged in varied work, perhaps being best known as a well driller. Three years ago he was married and took up his home at Green Bay, later removing to Coleman. He was 28 years of age and among his friends was held as a young man of highest character, industrious and a genial companion. His untimely death will be greatly deplored and will cause widespread and sincere regret. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Saturday, January 11, 1902, Page 1 ********** RAILROAD CROSSING VICTIM Edward Reif, Killed at Coleman, Run Down By Passenger Train Edward Reif, the former Francis Creek young man killed at Coleman Saturday, was the victim of a railway crossing accident and died within a very few minutes. He had attempted to cross the tracks in advance of an approaching passenger train and the buggy was completely demolished, the occupant receiving injuries that proved fatal. The horse escaped. The remains of Reif reached Branch Saturday evening and the funeral will be held Tuesday. At Coleman, where he made his home, Reif was a member of the firm of Lembke & Reif, hardware dealers. Besides his parents at Francis Creek and infant daughter, two brothers at Coleman survive him. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, January 13, 1902, Page 1 ********* From Der Nord Westen, 16 Jan. 1902: Edward Reif, a former resident in Francis Creek but more recently living in Coleman, Wisconsin, who had buried his wife two weeks ago met his own death on Sat. He ministered on the weekends in the Chilton area Salvatorian parishes and in School Hill, and in 1985, he became pastor of Holy Trinity Parish in Hohenwald, Tennessee. He returned to Francis Creek, Wisconsin, in 1987, and helped in the neighboring parishes when he could, but failing health began to take its toll. He died in St. Mary’s Home in Manitowoc on January 4, 1998, where he had lived for just a few weeks prior to his death. He was buried alongside family members in the cemetery of St. Anne’s Parish in Francis Creek. His brother, Fr. Reginald Schrimpf, was also a Salvatorian priest of the USA Province. In addition to his pastoral ministries, Fr. Raymond’s earlier skills were always put to good use wherever he served. He enjoyed upgrading the electrical wiring and doing carpentry work in the places he lived, and in his later life, the Society’s cottage in northern Wisconsin also benefited from his abilities.

In 1956, he returned to St. Nazianz as teacher, spiritual director, and athletics coach, and continued to serve the province as procurator. During summer months, he directed the seminary’s boys’ camp. Beginning in 1962, he ministered as Superior of the community in Blackwood, New Jersey, and taught in Mother of the Savior Seminary there.
