HEINRICH ANTHOLZ PIONEER RESIDENT CALLED ANTHOLZ Death removed a pioneer resident of Manitowoc county when Henry Antholz was called to his final rest at 7 o’clock Thursday evening, the demise occurring at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Christian Herman at Branch. Deceased had been ill for some time and suffered from a complication of diseases. For forty years Mr. Antholz was a leading agriculturist of the town of Kossuth, retiring but a few years ago to enjoy the fruits of an industrious and successful life that had brought him a comfortable competency. He was 71 years of age and is survived by four children, one son and three daughters. The funeral will be held Sunday at 1 o’clock from the home, interment being held at the Lutheran cemetery in Kossuth. AUGUST ANTHOLZ August Antholz, 82, of the Village of Mishicot, died Saturday evening at Two Rivers Community Hospital, Two Rivers. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Peter Evangelical Lutheran Church, Mishicot. The Rev. Herbert Kesting will officiate with burial in Kossuth Evergreen Cemetery. Mr. Antholz was born Sept. 17, 1893, in the Town of Kossuth, son of the late Henry and Amelia Schultz Antholz. He married Sidonia Mohr Sept. 12, 1928, at St. Peter Church. He was owner and operator of cheese factories at Maple Grove, Francis Creek and Mishicot and was later employed as bus driver and custodian in Mishicot Community School System. He was a former fire chief for the Village of Mishicot for many years. Survivors include his wife, two sons, Gene, of Franklin and Glenn, of Grafton; a daughter, Mrs. John E. (Adelaide) Ording, of Manitowoc, 12 grandchildren and a great grandchild. Two brothers preceded him in death. AUGUST ARNHOLZ Aug. Arnholz, 87, Pioneer Shoto Stone Cutter Passes Away August Arnholz, 87, pioneer stone cutter, and a resident of Shoto since 1866, passed away this morning at the hospital here, of diseses incident to old age. The deceased was born in Germany in 1842 and came to this country when a young man of 24, settling in the town of Two Rivers. He took up the stone cutting trade which he coninued until he retired. He was married in 1873 to Miss M. Holtger, who survives him with five daughters, Mrs. Charles Hardow, city, Mrs. John Peterek, Rockland, Mrs. Louis Ahrens, city, Mrs. Wm. Mueller, Shoto and Mrs. Jos. Bernard, of Milwaukee. Twenty two grand children and twenty great grand children also survive. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 Wednesday afternoon from the John Peterek home at Rockwood, and at two o'clock from the Lutheran church there, with Rev. Zell officiating. MARY ARNHOLZ MRS. ARNHOLZ DEATH TODAY 80-Year-Old Widow Will Be Buried On Monday Mrs. Mary Arnholz, 80, widow of the late August Arnholz and a life-long resident of the county died this morning at the home of her daughter, Mrs. John Peterik, at Rockwood, where she has been making her home for the past few years. She was seriously ill for a week. Funeral services will be held Monday at 1:30 p.m. from the Peterik home and at 2 p.m. from the Rockwood Lutheran church with interment in the Kossuth cemetery. The deceased, whose maiden name was Mary Holtger was born at Two Rivers in 1853. When a child her parents moved to Shoto. She was married there in 1873 to August Arnholz and they resided in that vicinity most of their life. Mr. Arnholz died in September, 1929. Survivors are five daughters, Mrs. Carl Hardow and Mrs. Louis Ahrens, both of this city, Mrs. John Peterik, Rockwood, Mrs. William Mueller, Shoto, Mrs. Joseph Bernard, Milwaukee; two brothers, Louis and August Holtger, both of Coleman, Wis.; three sisters Mrs. Walter Houghton, city, Mrs. Anna Stehn, Mishicot, and Mrs. Minnie Kasten, Two Rivers; 24 grandchildren and 50 great grandchildren. ANTON BRIESKE Anton Brieske, 79, of 1128 N. Eight St. Manitowoc, died Thursday morning at Family Heritage Nursing Home, Manitowoc, following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home and at 9:30 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Thaddeus J. Koszarek will officiate and burial will be in Kossuth Evergreen Cemetery. Mr. Brieske was born June 10, 1894, at Sparta, son of the late John and Catherine Kaesmann Brieske. He was a World War I veteran. He married Elizabeth Britton Apr. 28, 1919, at Marshfield. He had been employed at Boehringer Oil Co., Two Rivers, retiring in 1953. His wife preceded him in death April 30, 1973. Survivors include a daughter, a foster son, (Survivors names omitted for privacy.) a sister, Mrs. Grace Hussermann, of LaCrosse; and five grandchildren. ERNESTINE FICK Mrs. William Fick, 76, of Rt. 2, Manitowoc, died Sunday evening at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home, Manitowoc. The Rev. T.F. Uetzmann will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery. The former Ernestine Vergiels was born in Kewaunee County March 28, 1883, daughter of the late Wilham and Emilie Hoffmann Vergiels. She was married at Wayside Dec. 19, 1915 to William Fick and the couple moved to Rt. 2, Manitowoc, 15 years ago. Mr. Fick died in 1957. She is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Jack Anderson and Mrs. Lawrence Anderson of Manitowoc; a step son, Alvin Boettcher of Rt. 1, Mishicot; two brothers, Martin and Erwin of Green Bay; 23 grandchildren and two great grandchildren. APOLLONIA FOERSTER From Der Nord Westen, 30 Dec. 1909: Death Monday evening last week from a heart attack of Mrs. Appolonia Foerster, wife of Leonard Foerster, a man known countywide. The deceased (nee Theuringer), was born 23 April 1842 in Mittelfranken, Bavaria, and came to America with her parents in 1848. The family settled in Germantown, near Milwaukee, and there she married in 1868 with Leonhard Foerster, moving with him to Manitowoc County in 1876 and settling in Town Kossuth. Until a few years ago she and her husband operated a farm in Town Rapids where she died of a heart attack on 20 December. In addition to her sorrowing husband she is survived by 8 children. 2 other children preceded her in death. The funeral was held Thursday in the cemetery of Town Kossuth.


JOHN FOERSTER Death notice in Der Nord Westen, 10 Feb. 1881: Son of Leonhard Forester(sic) died last Sun. in Kossuth. He was 16 or 17 years old. ******* (NOTE: No burial location, however, he was most likely John Foerster/ surname is spelled wrong in death notice. Parents Leonhard & Apollonia Foerster are buried in Cem #35 Kossuth Evergreen, with son William. Per 1870-1880 census's, their oldest child was "John Foerster", born about 1865. John would have been age 16 at his death in 1881. My guess is that he is also buried in here, despite no transcription record for him. His mother's obit in 1909 states 2 children preceded her in death. They would have been John and Wilhelm.


LEONHARD FOERSTER PIONEER OF KOSSUTH DIES IN CITY SUNDAY Leonard Foerster, 74, Resided in Town for 40 Years Leonard Foerster, a pioneer settler of the town of Kossuth, and for forty years a well known farmer of the town, removing to the city five years ago, died at his home 1221 South Fifteenth street, Sunday, death following a long illness due to general breakdown from age. Mr. Foerster was 74 years old at his death. Decedent was born at Neuhof, Germany, April 23, 1840, and came to Manitowoc in 1867. He located in Kossuth and for years owned a large farm. Five years ago he retired and removed to this city where his wife died a year later. Mr. Foerster is survived by eight children, Mrs. Otto Mueller, Kossuth; Mrs. Emil Miller, city; Mrs. Henry Meyer, Branch; Mrs. A. Salveson, Newton; Mrs. W. Krause, Mrs. George Beck, Miss Augusta Foerster, city; Conrad Foerster, Kossuth. Six grand- children also survive. WILHELM FOERSTER From Der Nord Westen, 07 July 1892: Death on Wed. last week, after a long illness, of Wilhelm Foerster, at the age of 20 yrs. 10 mos. 23 days. He was the son of Town Kossuth resident, Leonhard Foerster. He was laid to rest on Sun., 03 July, in the Kossuth Cemetery. As evidence of the love in which he was held, over 140 vehicles followed the casket in the funeral procession.


MAVIS GONZALES Funeral services for Mrs. Nicholas Gonzales, 42, 1128 S. 13th St. Manitowoc who was killed Sunday evening in an auto accident near Elkhorn, Wis., will be at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home, Manitowoc. The Rev. Donald R. Good of Two Rivers will officiate and burial will be in Kossuth Evergreen Cemetery. Mrs. Gonzales, the former Mavis Gauthier, was born Jan. 23, 1924, at Two Rivers. ELMER GROELLE Elmer Groelle, 74, of Rt. 2, Manitowoc, died Tuesday at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, where he was a patient a week. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at First Reformed United Church of Christ, Manitowoc, the Rev. T.P. Crusius officiating, and burial will be in Kossuth Evergreen Cemetery. Mr. Groelle was born Aug. 18, 1890, in the Town of Newton, son of the late Frederick and Emma Schmitz Groelle. He resided in Manitowoc County all his life. He married the former Helena Maas in 1926 at Manitowoc. He farmed in the Town of Newton and retired in 1954. HELENA GROELLE Mrs. Helena Groelle, 84, of Fair Hills Home, Rosecrans, died Tuesday evening as the result of a fire. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lambert Funeral Home, Mishicot. The Rev. William S. Schultz will officiate and burial will be in Kossuth Evergreen Cemetery. Mrs. Groelle, nee Helena Maas, was born Jan. 22, 1888, in the Town of Kossuth, daughter of the late William and Ottelia Klusinski Maas. She was married to Elmer Groelle Oct. 24, 1925, at United Reformed Church, Newton. Mr. Groelle preceded her in death June 4, 1965. FRIEDRICH HARDRATH From Der Nord Westen, 28 Jan. 1897: In Town Kossuth on Wed. last August one of our old German pioneers, Mr. Friedrich Hardrath closed his tired eyes in the last sleep. The deceased was born 15 Oct. 1813 and came to America in 1857, landing in New York on the 4th of July. He came to Manitowoc on 14 July and took over his Kossuth farm on 16 July where he has lived unbrokenly ever since. His son has operated the farm the last several years. The deceased was twice married, both wives predeceasing him, and he is survived by one son and 3 daughters. The funeral of Mr. Hardrath, who died of old age debility, took place Sat. afternoon.


DORIS KAPPELMANN From Der Nord Westen, 30 Apr. 1903: Death Wed. last week in Town Kossuth of 76–yr. old Mrs. Ferdinand Kappelmann. The deceased, who had resided in that town for many years, was survived by her husband and 3 children. ************ From Der Nord Westen, 07 May 1903: The report last week of the passing of Mrs. Kappelmann was not entirely correct, so please allow us to print the following corrected notice: The deceased was Sophie Dorothea Kappelmann (nee Embshoff), wife of Johann Heinrich Wilhelm Kappelmann in Town Kossuth. Mrs. Kappelmann fell ill 10 Apr. and despite the best medical help became weaker and weaker from the illness day by day until death intervened 21 Apr. She was born 10 Apr. 1825 in Hohenfelde, Hanover, and married in the early 50’s to Mr. Kappelmann, her surviving husband. The couple came to America in 1861 and settled in Kossuth where they have lived ever since. The couple had 8 children of whom only 3 still live, namely, 2 sons, Heinrich and Fritz, and a daughter Dorris who is married to John Stadler. The funeral was held 25 Apr. at 1 p.m. Mr. Kappelmann wishes to send his heartfelt thanks to all those who attended the funeral and who have expressed their sympathies.


F. WILHELM KAPPELMANN From Der Nord Westen, 30 July 1885: On Tues. evening, Wm. Kappelmann drowned in the river near the icehouse. He had gone swimming and apparently suffered cramps. His body was found yesterday morning.

HENRIETTA KRAUSE Henrietta, wife of August Krause, a well known resident of Kossuth, died Friday afternoon at the age of 45 years. Deceased had been ill but a short time and her demise was a great shock. A family of children survive. The funeral services will take place from the home Monday afternoon at 2 o’clock. The deceased, who was born in Germany in 1860, came to America as a child with her parents. She married August Krause in 1877. In addition to her husband she leaves 4 children. The funeral took place Mon. afternoon.


JOHANN KRUEGER From Der Nord Westen, 21 May 1891: Death of 76 yr. old farmer Krueger on Thurs. after a 6 yr. illness. The deceased was buried on Mon. in the Lutheran Cemetery in Kossuth.


FRIEDRICH MARKWARDT From Der Nord Westen, 19 Apr. 1906: Death in Kewaunee on 09 April, following an illness of only 2 days, of Fred Markwardt, a longtime resident of our county. Mr. Markwardt was born 01 June 1822 in Mecklenburg-Schwerin and came to America in 1854. He lived in Milwaukee for 3 years and then took over a farm in Town Two Rivers where he lived until 6 months ago when he went to live with his daughter in Kewaunee. He leaves his widow, Mrs. May Markwardt, as well as the following children: Fred in Clearwater, Minnesota, Henry in Two Rivers, Willie in Blairsburg, Iowa, August in Two Rivers, Mrs. T.J. McCarty in Sheboygan, and Mrs. R.L. McCarty in Kewaunee. All of these children attended the funeral which was under the direction of the pastor of the Baptist Church. Mrs. M. Markwardt and her children have asked us to express their heartfelt thanks to all their friends and neighbors who in this time of sorrow have expressed their friendship and condolences.


OLGA MAAS Miss Olga Maas, 74, of Fair Hills Home, Rosecrans, died Wednesday evening at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Lambert Funeral Home, Mishicot. The Rev. William A. Schultz will officiate and burial will be in Kossuth Evergreen Cemetery. Miss Maas was born Dec. 6, 1897, in the Town of Kossuth, daughter of the late William and Ottelia Klusinski Maas. She resided with Mrs. Louise Zimmer and also with Mrs. Theodore Kuss in the Town of Gibson for many years. On Nov. 1, 1970, she moved to Fair Hills Home. JOSEPH MISCHOT From Der Nord Westen, 11 Mar. 1897: A heart attack last week took the life of 45 yr. old Joseph Mishott who was in the employ of Greenbay Road resident, Mr. Wilhelm Meyer. He wanted to take a rest from his work and, to warm himself, sat beside the oven and fell asleep. When someone tried to wake him after a while, it was discovered that he was dead.

EDNA NEUENFELDT Mrs. Edna (Ida) Neuenfeldt, 72, who resided with a son-in-law and daughter, Mrs. and Mrs. Glenn Daugs, of 1212 Madison St., Manitowoc, died Friday noon at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Immanuel Evangelical Lutheran Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. Glenn Unke will officiate and burial will be in Kossuth Evergreen Cemetery. Mrs. Neuenfeldt, nee Edna Rahn, was born Feb. 17, 1900, at Two Rivers, daughter of the late Henry and Emma Stueck Rahn. She was married to Alfred Buhk in 1925. Mr. Buhk preceded her in death in 1952. She then was married to Joe Mahlik and he also preceded her in death. She then was married to Arthur Neuenfeldt. Survivors include two sons, Melvin Buhk, of Mantiowoc and Donald Buhk, of Two Rivers; two daughters, Mrs. Donald (Eunice) Pierce and Mrs. Glenn (Shirley) Daugs, of Manitowoc; a brother, Henry, of Rt. 2, Manitowoc; three sisters, Mrs. Meta Aschenbrenner and Mrs. Gordon Zelle, of Manitowoc, and Mrs. Frances Miller, of Rt. 2, Manitowoc; 10 grandchildren and five great grandchildren. GOTTFRIED OESTREICH From Der Nord Westen, 26 May 1892: Death of 63 yr. old Gottfried Oestreich on Sat. after several weeks confinement, of a heart attack in Town Kossuth. The deceased leaves a widow and several grown children. Burial was Tues. in the Town Kossuth cemetery.


HENRY OESTREICH Henry Oestreich, an aged resident of Kossuth, died yesterday. For three months he has been ailing and yesterday passed quietly away. Deceased was born in Germany, April 8, 1822 and at an early age emigrated to this country with his brothers, later settling in Kossuth. He was one of those sturdy pioneer farmers who did so much in the building up of the county and for years has been respected and honored in the community where he lived. For some years he had made his home with his son-in-law, Herman Boettcher. His wife has been dead for some time. HULDA OESTREICH Life's journey for Mrs. Hulda Oesteich ended peacefully at 11:30 o'clock Sunday night, when she calmly sank into the eternal sleep. Her death occurred at the home on North Ninth Street, and followed a complication of diseases. In December last year her health began to fail and in the last few weeks she has suffered greatly. Though not entirely unexpected the announcement of her death was a shock to friends. Mrs. Oestrich was born in Prussia, August 22, 1834 and came here with her husband thirty-six years ago, and has continued her residence in the city since. Her husband died nine years ago and since then she had been cared for by her children, five of whom survive. She was a woman who enjoyed the esteem and affection of a large friendship circle, who will mourn her loss as personal. DONALD PIERCE Donald W. Pierce, 54, of 511 Buffalo St., Manitowoc, died Wednesday evening at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Urbanek and Schlei Funeral Home, Manitowoc. The Rev. Donald Stannard will officiate and burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Town of Kossuth. Military graveside services will be conducted. Mr. Pierce was born Oct. 23, 1917, at Green Bay, son of the late Allen and Georgia McKee Pierce. He married Eunice Buhk Nov. 29, 1947, in Manitowoc. He served in the United States Army as an engineer in World War II. MARIA PULS From Der Nord Westen, 13 July 1899: Death Wed. last week, in her residence in Town Kossuth, of Mrs. Maria Puls at the age 50 yrs. 2 mos. 15 days of a stroke. The deceased, who leaves her husband and 5 children, was buried 08 July under the direction of Pastor Sieker of Rosecrans.


EMILIE SCHUETTE From Der Nord Westen, 05 Nov. 1885: Death of Mrs. Emilie Schuette (nee Rabenhorst), wife of August Schuette, on 29 Oct. in Town Kossuth. The deceased was only 20-1/2 and leaves her husband with a 5-mo. old son. (Note: I didn't find this stone when photographing the cemetery. It appears that the transcribers got the year wrong as this shows her to be much younger.)


KATHARINE SPECHT From Der Nord Westen, 08 Jan. 1903: Death in Town Kossuth on Mon. of Mrs. Catharine Specht at the age of 74 yrs. 2 mos. Mrs. Specht, who had lived in Town Kossuth since 1871 and was a sister of Mr. H. Spoentgen, Sr., here, is survived by 7 children, 27 grandchildren and 3 greatgrandchildren. The funeral will take place this afternoon.


LAURA SPECHT From Der Nord Westen, 18 Nov. 1909: Death Saturday in Kossuth of Mrs. Hermann Specht after an illness of six months. The deceased, born Laura Kreaser, was born 13 July 1876 in Cooperstown and was married 17 January 1894 with Hermann Specht whom she leaves with one son. The funeral was held Tuesday afternoon in Kossuth.


LYDIA SPECHT DEATH TAKES MRS. SPECHT ON THURSDAY Widow of Herman Specht, Rockwood, Dies at Hospital; Rites Monday Mrs. Lydia Specht, 71, widow of the late Herman Specht, pioneer Kossuth farmer, died Thursday noon at the Municipal hospital here, following an operation a week ago. Mrs. Specht, who resided with her only son, Edwin A., on the home farm, just north of the village of Rockwood, on Highway 141, had been in ill health for several months. Funeral Monday Funeral services will be held Monday afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Evangelical church in this city, with burial in Evergreen cemetery in the town of Kossuth. Services will be conducted by the Rev. William C.F. Hayes. The body is at the Klein & Stangel, Inc., funeral home and may be viewed there from 7 o'clock Saturday evening. It will be taken to the church at 10 o'clock Monday morning. Nee Lydia Krieser, Mrs. Specht was born on the Cooperstown farm of her parents, August and Wilhelmine Worm Krieser, Feb. 26, 1875. She was married to Herman Specht of Rockwood on April 10, 1912. The couple settled on the farm near Rockwood, where they resided until Mr. Specht's death the past June. One Son Survives Only one child, Edwin A., was born to the couple. He survives, along with three grandchildren. She is also survived by four brothers, John Krieser of Milbank, S.D., Ben of Long Beach, Calif., Arnold of Maribel, and Ray W. of Manitowoc. Mr. Steinbrecher was born in Groszeitersdorf, Sachsen-Altenburg, and is survived by a widow and 6 children. The funeral took place Sat. at the Lutheran Cemetery in Kossuth.


GOTTLIEB WACHOLS From Der Nord Westen, 09 Jan. 1902: A heart attack Thurs. night took the life of Town Kossuth resident Gottlieb Wacholz. The deceased, who was 77, had suffered from heart trouble for some time and had intended to see a doctor the day before his death but postponed it because he was feeling better. The problem returned during the night and he died shortly afterwards.
