OLE AND SOREN BALLESTAD From Der Nord Westen, 25 Apr. 1901: In Town Cato the brothers Ole and Soren Ballestad died within 15 mins. of each other. The two brothers, who had come here from Norway many years ago, resided together in a house in Cato. One was 84 and the other 79. (Note: This is the only cemetery with the Ballestad surname. Apparently Ole's tombstone was mis-read or there was a typo.) ******** BOTH WITHIN THE HOUR Two Brothers, Who Were Life Long Companions, Are Called By Death. SEPARATED BUT 15 MINUTES. Ole and Soeren Ballestad, For Many Years Residents of Cato, Together In Death – A Life Story. Born of the same parents, in the same home in the village of Jerpen, Norway; reared in childhood together and in mature years privileged to continue the association of companionship without separation and, finally to pass from earth within the hour is the story of the lives of Ole L. and Soeren L. Ballestad, brothers, who died in the village of Cato Sunday. The circumstances surrounding the two deaths, which occurred within fifteen minutes of each other, are pathetic and reveal the story of a love that for years has been the absorbing interest of two lives. For many years the Ballestad brothers have been residents of Manitowoc county, coming here in early youth and locating on adjoining farms in Cato. Several years ago they determined to make a home together, and one farm was disposed of. Soeren becoming a member of his brother’s family occupying a room adjoining that of the other. Thus they have lived in the happiness of their surroundings, and close companionship. Often has the hope been expressed by one or the other that when the time came for them to leave the world that there might be no long separation, and Fate fulfilled the desire. The death of Ole Ballestad occurred at 1 o’clock Sunday afternoon and fifteen minutes later his brother Soeren, peacefully breathed his last. The two occupied adjoining rooms and were within call of each others voices. The illness of the former dates back but a few days when he contracted a cold, which developed pneumonia and quickly terminated his career. The other had been in ill health but only recently was confined to his bed. He too suffered from pneumonia. From early childhood the brothers had been close companions, leaving the old home together and never having been separated for any length of time. Soeren Ballestad was 84 years of age while his brother had passed his seventy-ninth birthday. Both were well and favorably known in the vicinity where they resided and had an extensive acquaintance throughout the county. The double funeral will be held from the home in Cato Thursday afternoon, Rev Alfsen officiating. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Monday, April 22, 1901, p. 1

Johnson and a pioneer resident of this county, answered the summons of death due to infirmities of old age. The decedent was a devoted Christian and although death was not unexpected, her absence will be deeply deplored in this community. Mrs. Johnson was born in Gjerpen, Norway, April 4, 1831, and with her parents came to America at the age of 15. Two years later she was married to J.P. Johnson and with her husband made their home at Milwaukee for several years, and later settled on a farm in Manitowoc Rapids, where she resided up to a few years ago. GUSTAV JOMEN DEATH TAKES CASE TO HIGHER COURT. Gustave Jomen, Defendant in Criminal Action, Appears Before High Tribunal. FEW DAYS BEFORE THE TRIAL Liberty Farmer, Who Was To Have Been Arraigned In Circuit Court, Dies of Typhoid Fever Death intervening hand freed an accused man from the infamy of standing trail on a criminal charge before the earthly courts and carried the case to the higher tribunal, presided over by the Infinite Judge. Gustave Jomen, a Liberty farmer, being the released one. Jomen was to have been tried at this term of Circuit Court, the case being the first on the criminal calendar, but Death claimed him and his innocence or guilt has already been determined in the court from whose decision there is no appeal. Jomen was arrested last March upon complaint of a fourteen-year old girl and who arraigned in Municipal Court entered a plea of not guilty, being bound over to Circuit Court in $500 bond, which he was able to furnish and was allowed his liberty. The crime alleged was most heinous and considerable feeling prevailed at Liberty where both parties resided. On his release from custody Jomen returned home and has since stoutly maintained his innocence of the charge against him. He was anxious to have the case come to trial and was preparing to appear, when taken ill. A cold contracted, developed serious illness and typhoid fever set in claiming the life of the patient Sunday night. The funeral took place at Liberty Wednesday afternoon. Jomen was a man of 38 years of age and, until the time of accusation against him, bore an excellent reputation. During his illness he was constant in denials of any connection with the case and to friends asserted, with his dying breath, that he was innocent. The complaining witness against Jomen was Alma Larson, daughter of a farmer, who resides in the neighborhood. Jomen was unmarried. Whatever question may have existed as to the innocence or guilt of the accused is in longer open for judgment. If guilty retribution has overtaken him without the interference of temporal courts; if innocent, he has been vindicated by his maker and earthly judgment need not pronounced. Manitowoc Daily Herald, Friday, January 18, 1901, p. 1 ********* From Der Nord Westen, 24 Jan. 1901: 38-yr. old Gustav Jomen, a farmer in Town Liberty, died Sun. of typhus. Jomen was facing serious charges in the upcoming court session.

RICHARD KULNICK SMALL SON OF RAPIDS FARMER KICKED TO DEATH BY HORSES IN PASTURE A pall of sadness has come over the home of Mr. and Mrs. Walter Kulnick, town of Rapids residents, and the sympathy of numerous friends and acquaintances will be extended to them because of the untimely death of their three and a half year old son, Richard, who on Sunday, while having wandered into the pasture was kicked to death by one of the horses. The little fellow had been in the house playing about the kitchen and was suddenly missed by his parents. They instituted a search and were horrified to find him lying unconscious in the field adjacent to the farm home with blood streaming from a wound in the head evidently having been inflicted by one of the horses in the field. There were still signs of life and the boy was rushed to the hospital in an automobile but it was impossible to save his life and he died two hours after being brought to the institution. Mr. and Mrs. Kulnick reside on the River road six miles west of the city. They express the belief that the boy, who was not afraid of the horses, made his way through the fence into the pasture and then in play chased one of the animals which turned and kicked him. Each autumn he came into our office and paid his renewal for another year. However, this year he wrote us a note instead that due to the fact that his eyesight had gotten so weak he couldn’t read anymore. When he made his regular visits and we congratulated him on his advanced age, he’d shake his head and say “It’s no great joy to be so old if one has comparatively good health. One finds himself alone, even though in the company of his children, because the old friends which understood him are all gone, and the new generation has its new ideas and new ideals.” We couldn’t prove him wrong and now he has gone to his rest. The funeral will be Saturday in Rapids.
