Mrs. Henry Lax, 73, of 908A South 23rd St., Manitowoc, lifelong resident of the county, died early Saturday at the Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, following a stroke.
Funeral services will be held at 8:30 a.m. Monday at the Pfeffer Funeral Home, Manitowoc, and at 9 a.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church, Manitowoc. The Rev. John Landowski will officiate and burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Manitowoc.
She was born Annie Heinricks in Manitowoc Rapids in 1880 and in 1904 was married to Henry Lax. They located on a farm on Rt. 1, Manitowoc. In 1951 they retired and moved to Manitowoc.
Surviving are her husband; four daughters, Mrs. Edward Bauer and Mrs. Evarist Bast of Manitowoc, Mrs. Victor Bauer of Rt. 4, Manitowoc, and Mrs. Raymond Kaufman of Rt. 1, Manitowoc; son, Clarence of Manitowoc; three brothers, John of Rt. 4, Manitowoc, Joseph of Rt. 5, Manitowoc, and Louis of Green Bay; and 13 grandchildren.
Friends may call at the funeral home after 2 p.m. Sunday where the Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Sunday by the Knights of Columbus.

JOHANNES LIEDEL Death of John Liedl in St. Nazianz on 15 Apr. of consumption. The deceased was born in Barton, Washington Co., Wisc. on 16 Jan. 1864 and was age 24 when he died. His health became impaired several months ago and during the winter he took a trip to Florida, but while there he continued to grow weaker and on Sunday morning, passed the portal of death. He was senior partner of the firm of Liedl Bros., and conducted the business in an able and systematic manner. He was a young man of stainless character, good intellectual attainments and thoroughly honest in his dealing with the public. He was twenty-five years of age and unmarried and leaves a mother and brother in sad bereavement. MATHIAS LIEDEL Died of cancer of the stomach Mr. M. Liedell of St. Nazianz, aged 61 years. Deceased leaves a wife and two sons to mourn his loss. The bereaved relatives have our heartfelt sympathy in their deep affliction. Mr. Leidll was a merchant and by his honest and fair methods of dealing had won the respect of a large number of people in the neighborhood. Our poor old hermit was taken to the poor house last week in Manitowoc. MAX LIEDEL Death of Max Liedl on Fri. of last week in St. Nazianz. The deceased who was only 23 yrs. old succumbed to stomach cancer. He had been employed in the St. Nazianz Manufacturing Co. The burial took place on Monday. He is survived by his mother. Der Nord Westen, 29 Jan. 1891 ********** (From the correspondent in St. Nazianz, 08 Feb.) We would like to tell you more about Mr. Liedl. Mr. Liedl was born March 15, 1865 in Washington County, Wisconsin. He came with his parents and a couple of years older brother in 1873 to St. Nazianz in this county. Mr. Mathias Liedl was the father and the head of the family, a businessman and shrewd investor. He made a very good living and was able to give his sons a good education. The father died, about six years ago, at the best time of his life. Three years later, his oldest son John followed him, dying in the 24th year of his life. His only surviving son and heir worked in the business and was partner in the St. Nazianz Manufacturing Company. He was well liked as businessman and friend. He was very personable, and had money to spend. He was charitable and did not take himself too seriously. He died after a long stomach and lung illness. However it was not due to cancer. He died January 24, in the morning at 6:00 A.M. The funeral took place on Wednesday, January 28th at the cemetery in St. Nazianz. The people attending the funeral, was the largest number of people attending any funeral in St. Nazianz. Everyone mourned the early death of this beloved citizen. The mother the only surviving family member, stood at the graves of her husband and sons. She had the sympathy of everyone. KAREN ANN LUTZKE Private funeral services were held Wednesday at Christianson Funeral Home, Valders, for Karen Ann Lutzke, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Gary Lutzke, of Rt. 1, Valders. The Rev. Gregory Putzer officiated and burial was in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. The child was born Monday at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, and died Tuesday. HAROLD J. ROSERA Harold (Hal) J. Rosera, a resident of 108 N. First Ave., St. Nazianz, died unexpectedly Saturday, Aug. 18, 2001 at St. Vincent Hospital, Green Bay. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2001 at 7 p.m. at the Harrigan Parkside Funeral Home, Manitowoc. The Rev. Gerald Foley will officiate. Burial of his cremains will be at a later date in Evergreen Cemetery, Manitowoc. He was born in Iron River, Mich., May 14, 1929. His parents were the late Arnold and Cecilia Rosera. He attended schools in Iron River and graduate with a degree in conservation from Fox Valley Technical School, Appleton. On May 3, 1985 he married Janet Levenhagen Baer at St. Nazianz. He served in the United States Navy for 23 years making it his career. During that time he specialized in salvage, search and rescue diving. He also was stationed on several different submarines and was a pitcher for the Navy baseball team. Hal loved sports an excelled in handball, bowling and especially golf. He was very interested in antique cars and for many years was the proud owner of a 1964 Pontiac GTO. After his retirement from the Navy, he moved to the Appleton area and was employed for several years by a cable company in that area. After moving to Manitowoc, he worked for Jones Intercable (Comcast) as an electronic technician and at Mirro Foley Co. as a security guard. Survivors include his wife Janet; two daughters: Cheri Boatmun of Eugene, Ore., and Dawn Attelberger of Vancouver, Wash.; three grandchildren: Jason Boatmun, Mandy and Nicole Attelberger; four stepchildren: Lisa (Greg) Neumeyer, Cindy (Ken) Mayer, Rick (Judy) Baer, David Baer; three stepgrandchildren: James and Christine Neumeyer, Cheyenne Mayer: a sister: Lois Novak of Iron River, Mich.; three brothers: Ronald (Janet) Rosera, Milwaukee; Eugene (Valerie) Rosera, Valders; and Ralph (Shirley) Rosera, Roseberg, Ore. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many good friends. He was preceded in death by his parents. HAROLD F. RUEBESOM Harold F. Ruebesam, 66, of 1433 N. 6th St., Manitowoc, died unexpectedly Tuesday morning, Oct. 25, at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc. Funeral services will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at Christianson-Deja Funeral Home St. Nazianz. Rev. Cletus LaMere will officiate and burial will be in Wisconsin Memorial Park after 2:30 p.m. services Thursday. Mr. Ruebesam was born Aug. 9, 1917, at Milwaukee, son of the late Frank and Ella Sepnafski Ruebesam. He attended Milwaukee schools. He was the former owner and operator of Rebe’s Texaco of Brookfield and Rebe’s Bar at Pigeon Lake. He married Grace Roensties on May 24, 1947, at Milwaukee. MARGARET SCHAD (d. 1967) Mrs. Margaret Schad, 84, of St. Nazianz, died Sunday morning at St. Nicholas Hospital, Sheboygan. She had been a patient there two days. Funeral services will be at 9:45 a.m. Wednesday at Christianson Funeral Home and 10 a.m. at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz, the Rev. Mark Stangel officiating. Burial will be in Holy Trinity Church Cemetery, School Hill. Mrs. Schad was born April 25, 1883, in the Town of Eaton, daughter of the late Wenzel and Margaret Hiller Schad. She attended St. Gregory Catholic School. She was married to Peter Schad, April 20, 1909, at St. Gregory Catholic Chruch and the couple farmed in the School Hill area. He preceded her in death Dec. 11, 1952. For the last 15 years she resided with her son, Clarence at St. Nazianz. JOSEPH SCHEMA Joseph Schema Dies Saturday; Rites Tuesday St. Nazianz – Joseph Schema, 89, retired farmer of this section died Saturday at the home of his son-in-law and daughter, Mr. and Mrs. Max Crystal (sic) (Christel), Kiel, Route 1. Funeral services for the deceased will be held at St. Gregory's church here, and burial will be in the Calvary cemetery in Sheboygan. Born March 19, 1857, in Austria, Mr. Schema came to the United States in 1888 and settled in Sheboygan County. He had retired from active farming in May 1940. His wife, the former Mary Schurmetl,(sic) passed away in 1937. Four children also preceded him in death. He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Antonia Zelle, Sheboygan, and Mrs. Anna Crystal, Kiel, Rte 1, and four sons, Louis, and Joseph, both of Kiel, John of Sheboygan, and Math., Valders , Rte 1. JOSEPHINE SCHERER Mrs. Scherer To Be Laid To Rest Tuesday Morning St. Nazianz, Wis.- Mrs. Josephine Scherer, nee Josephine Wild, of this village passed away at 7 p.m. last Friday at Holy Family hospital in Manitowoc where she was taken Thursday afternoon. Death was due to a hemorrhage. Deceased was born in 1869 in Manitowoc county where with the exception of 10 years spent in Chicago, she lived all her life. For the last three years she made her home with her son, George, in this village. She was a member of the St. Gregory Christian Mother society of St. Nazianz. Survivors are two sons, Edward of Manitowoc and George of this village; six grandchildren, and one sister, Miss Anna Wild of this village. Her husband preceded her in death 36 years ago and three children, Joseph, Mathew and Elizabeth died in infancy. ROMAN J. SCHLEH Roman J. (Romy) Schleh, age 84, a resident of St. Mary's Home, Manitowoc, died Friday morning, Oct. 15, 2004, at St. Mary's Home. He was born Dec. 27, 1919, in St. Nazianz, son of the late Joseph and Leona Garthoeffner Schleh. Roman was a veteran of World War II, serving in the United States Army. He married the former Margaret Kiefer on Sept. 23, 1941, and she preceded him in death in 1970. He then married the former Arlene A. Madson on April 9, 1983. Romy was the owner of the Piggly Wiggly Store in New Holstein and a member of the St. Nazianz Senior Citizens Club. Romy was also a member of American Legion Post 124 of New Holstein. Survivors include his wife, Arlene Schleh of St. Nazianz; four sons and daughters-in-law, Jerome Schleh of Manitowoc, Robert and Ann Schleh, James and Carol Schleh, William and Mary Schleh, a daughter and son-in-law, Dorothy and Dennis Nimmer, all of New Holstein; 19 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; two step grandchildren; stepchildren, Barbara Jane and Michael Carpenter of Hager City, Wis., David Schleh of Visalia, Calif., John and Sharon Schleh of Chico, Calif.; and three sisters and brothers-in-law, Betty Fay Schleh of St. Nazianz, Joann and Jerome Ryan of New Berlin and Marjorie and James Schnell of Sheboygan. A Memorial Service was held at First Baptist Church in Kiel, Wis. She was born May 15, 1933, to Lester and Florence Bisoph Herbst in Milwaukee. On May 12, 1985, she married Rex Shinn in Manitowoc. Survivors include her husband, Rex; three children, Susan (Joseph) Pecoraro, Jefferson, La., Jim Thibodeau, Bay St. Louis, Mo., and John (Michelle) Thibodeau, River Ridge, La.; a sister, Mildred (Bob) Liese, Valmy, Wis.; and other relatives and friends. He was 70 years of age and spent much of his life-time in Manitowoc county. Born in the town of Meeme on Nov. 27, 1861, Dr. Taugher attended the schools of the township and later taught school in Manitowoc county until he saved enough to pay his expenses through a medical school. He was graduated from Northwestern university in 1883 and immediately took up the practice of medicine at St. Nazianz. He made his residence there and in the city of Manitowoc for eight years and then went to Wausau where he practiced for 19 years before again entering the university for a post-graduate course. Following the completion of the higher course, Dr. Taugher returned to Wausau and practiced until three years ago [1929] when he retired. Funeral Services were held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 14, 1994, at St. Gregory Catholic Church, St. Nazianz. Rev. Leonard Walker officiated. He was born March 5, 1969 in Manitowoc, son of Roger and Kathleen Williams Tuscan. He was a 1987 graduate of Valders High School and was currently employed at Tecumseh Products, New Holstein. He was a veteran of the United States Army serving in the Gulf War. Survivors include his parents, Roger and Kathleen Tuscan, Brodhead, Wis.; three brothers, Michael, Washington, D.C., Mitchell, Madison, Daniel, St. Nazianz; his paternal grandparents, Josephine Tuscan, Green Bay, Stephen Tuscan, Marinette; his maternal great-grandmother, Florence Knutson, Menominee, Mich.; aunts, uncles, cousins, other relatives nad friends also survive. PETER JOHN WEINKOETZ P.J. Weinkoetz, the nominee for the office of register of deeds, was born at St. Nazianz, Nov. 14, 1873. He attended the public schools of his village and later the First Ward school of this city. He was a justice of the peace for six years and served three years as town clerk of Eaton. He has had three years experience as clerk in the office of register of deeds having served in that office during the incumbency of Theodore Wolf. He is, therefore, familiar with all details of the duties of the office he seeks. He has always been a staunch democrat and has represented the town of Eaton for the past eight years as a member of the democratic county committee. It is safe to say that, if elected, he will acquit himself to the satisfaction of the people of the county.
