PAUL SHEA DRIVER THROWN FROM ROLLING AUTO, KILLED Casco Youth Is Victim Of Second Wreck Paul D. Shea, Gerald Swifka Lose Their Lives Two persons died Thursday morning as the result of highway accidents in Manitowoc and Kewaunee counties. The dead: Paul D. Shea, of St. Nazianz, Gerald Swifka, 17, of Casco. Injuries received in an accident Wednesday evening proved fatal at 5:10 a.m. Thursday for Shea. Swifka was killed and four other teen-agers are in critical condition at St. Vincent Hospital, Green Bay, following an accident on a town road a mile and a half northwest of the village of Pilsen, Kewaunee County, about 1 a.m. Thursday. Hospitalized were (private...this is about the Swifka accident) Shea, a recently discharged Air Force serviceman, was fatally hurt about 7:45 p.m. when his late model sedan left County Highway JJ two miles east of Clarks Mills and overturned several times. His body was found in an oat field about 30 feet from the car, which came to rest on its wheels. No Inquest His death at Holy Family Hospital, Manitowoc, was attributed to an internal hemorrhage resulting from a crushed chest. Coroner Dr. Theodore Teitgen said there would be no inquest. The accident scene was at a sweeping curve near the Walter Reinertson Farm about seven miles west of Manitowoc. Capt. Henry Pleuss of the county traffic police said the eastbound auto, in which Shea was the lone occupant, was coming out of the curve when it ran off the right shoulder. After rolling at least once on the highway, the car careened into the left ditch and overturned several more times before it landed upright in an oats field on the Reinertson property about 70 to 80 feet from the roadway. Shea was thrown from the vehicle with such force that his body bounced twice in the field, Pleuss said. A piece of rubber weatherstripping wrapped around the victim;s body indicated that he had been hurtled through the windshield. Investigation showed the car was out of control for a distance of about 500 feet. Reported Going “Pretty Fast” Captain Pleuss quoted a young (Continued on Page T-5) boy who witnessed the accident as saying the vehicle was traveling “pretty fast.” Shea was reportedly on his way to visit his fiancee Miss Lucille Wetenkamp who lives at Wetenkamp Corners about three miles east of the accident scene. (this part of article about Swifka) Shea was born June 2, 1935 at St. Nazianz, son of the late C.P. Shea and Mrs. Edna Wagner Shea. He attended St. Gregory parochial school and Valders High School. LUCAS SOHM Death Tuesday last week in St. Nazianz of 92-year old J. Lukas. So now the last of the 50 companions of Father Oschwald is gone. In 1852 the latter had led them from Baden to Manitowoc County and established the St. Nazianz colony in the then wilderness of Town Eaton. The original colonists have gone one after the other, but the colony bloomed and flourished into the present small city of St. Nazianz. Lukas so I contacted Bob Domagalski who has extensive records on this cemetery. Here is his response: "I believe I have solved the mystery of "J. Lukas". There was an Oschwald Brother named "Lucas Sahm" who died on Oct. 7, 1908. I have all the death dates for all members of the Oschwald Society -- and this is the only Oschwald male to have died in 1908. I believe the newspaper confused his first name -making his first name his surname. There are other mistakes in Der Nord Westen for Lucas. Further evidence that Lucas Salm is "J. Lukas" is the fact that Lucas Salm was one of the original colonists -coming over on the same boat with Fr. Oshchwald in 1854. In my cemetery records, I have the surname as "Sahm" rather than "Salm". Lucas Salm appears in a group photo of Oschwald Brothers in the 1904 photo showing all the surviving brothers.")
