AMBROSE SCHWAB This obituary can be found in the Tri-County Record, Kiel, Wisconsin. Issue - Thursday, February 23, 1928 - Page 4, Column 1 - St. Nazianz News. Ambrose Schwab, 65, passed away at his home here Wednesday, after a lingering illness. He was one of the old residents of this village, having been born and raised in this community. Mr. Schwab was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Schwab, both of whom died a number of years ago. He was united in marriage with Miss Anna Kautzer about thirty-seven years ago. They settled on a farm west of this village and resided there until the time of Mr. Schwab's death. He is survived by his wife, three children, Leo and Mrs. August Leonard of Sheboygan, Mrs. Richard Flechsig of Milwaukee, two brothers, John and Joseph of Washington, and one sister, Mrs. Katie Weiss of Chicago. Funeral services were held from St. Gregory's church at 9:30 a.m. Saturday. The Rev. Fintan Holzknecht sang a requiem mass and officiated at the short services at the cemetery adjoining the church. The Catholic Knights, of whom Mr. Schwab was a member, attended the services in a body. The following from out of town attended the funeral of Ambrose Schwab: Mr. and Mrs. Richard Flechsig and Mr. and Mrs. Chas. Roeming of Milwaukee; Mr. and Mrs. August Leonard and family, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Garthoeffner and family, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lutz, and Mrs. Martin Lutz of Sheboygan; Mr. and Mrs. Peter Kautzer of Kiel; Mr. and Mrs. C. Lutzke of Liberty; Mr. and Mrs. August Schwalbe and Mr. and Mrs. Rueben Schwalbe of near Chilton. ******* Correction Postnote: My research indicates that his death date was approx. February 15. The news article gives the impression that he died one day before the newspaper issue - February 22nd. Some of the people mentioned in the obituary and their relationships are: Ambrose Schwab was an uncle to Joseph Garthoeffner, Mrs. Martin (Mayme) Lutz, and Mrs. Joseph (Helen) Lutz. I have also found records indicating that his wife's maiden name may have been spelled: Kautza. DONNA MAE STEFFEN No Negligence Found in Girl's Death Tumble After hearing testimony from 10 witnesses and investigating police officers at an inquest Tuesday morning, Dr. Theodore Teitgen, county coroner, found there was no gross negligence involved in the case of a 17 year old St. Gregory High School student who fell to her death beneath the wheels of two hay wagons the night of Oct. 5. The victim, Donna Mae Steffen, 17, of St. Nazianz, was a member of a school hayride party when the accident occurred on a town road 3-1/2 miles north of the intersection of Highways 149 and AA. According to the testimony, the Steffen girl appeared to be moving sideways to make room for a chaperone when she slipped off the front of a wagon. With her hands still on the wagon, she took a couple of steps, then seemed to stumble and went under the wagon witnesses said. Towed By Tractor The wagon and another one behind it were being towed by a farm tractor operated by (private), 19, of Glenbeulah. There were 30 students on the first wagon and 39 on the second. The wagons had been pulled by separate tractors at the start of the ride from St. Nazianz. The doubling up occurred after the lights went out on one tractor and one of the wagons developed a flat tire. (private) testified that he had just turned a corner and was going about 10 to 12 miles an hour. After hearing one of the students yell, "Someone fell off," he stopped as soon as he could, (private) said. (private), 18, of Rt. 1 Glenbeulah, was a chaperone on the trip. He is now employed as a service station attendant at Plymouth. (private) said he had crawled forward between hay bales from the second wagon to the first and was seated on a bale talking to Miss Steffen when she slipped. He related that he grabbed her jacket but that it slipped from his grasp. Another student, (private), 16, Cleveland, also grabbed her but was unable to hold on. Miss Steffen was said to be wearing a jacket made of slippery type nylon. Students Testify Other students called upon to testify at the inquest were (private) of Glenbeulah; (private) of Chilton; (private) of Rt.1, Valders, and (private) of Cleveland. (private) were seated on fenders of the tractor, it was brought out in questioning by Dist. Atty. Robert E. Koutnik. Sgt. Wilfred Christianson and Officer Robert Hermann of county traffic police testified as to their investigation of the accident. The officers said they found no evidence of drinking by students on the hayride. Testimony also disclosed that the students were behaving in an orderly manner prior to the accident.
